I LOVE how you hear things and appreciate them. Subtle things in the music. Most don't, frankly.
These guys were musicians, not a packaged act like so many are these days. Looks and autotune. Kansas was for real, as was all of the music "In my day". (i'm 63 yo)

I was born in 62' so I was a teenager when albums like this were being released. There's was so much great rock music coming out all the time. Notably there was a LOT of "instrumental" type music such as Kansas, Styx, Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), Supertramp, ect. Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" is one of those "once in a lifetime" songs that was very special in it's time.

Kansas was such a great, talented band. The main songwriter was Kerry Livgren (he was excellent both on guitar and on keys), the main lead vocalist was Steve Walsh (who was also quite an adept organist), and Robbie Steinhardt was the second lead vocalist and violinist (he passed away recently). "Dust in the Wind" has Walsh on lead and Steinhardt handling harmony vocals and violin.
My favorite album by them is "Song for America"--the title track (epic!), "Down the Road," "Lamplight Symphony"...terrific stuff.

Steve Walsh is the lead singer; he played a few things, like organ, piano, bongos, congas. His cohort in harmony was Robbie Steinhardt, who played the violin. This entire band are masters at what they do/did. I include did, because a few have retired from the band or passed away, sad to say. Glad to see that you like them... ❤❤

Dust In The Wind, according to Kerry Livgren's book, was more or less written on the spot. He had made up some finger picking exercises for himself and was running through some chords when his wife came in and said, That's pretty, what's the song? He says, no song. But then he just started with whatever came to mind and it was pretty close to the final version you hear now.

I listen to a lot of reaction channels because I enjoy seeing younger people discover music that I love, this is the first time I have listened to your channel, and I especially enjoyed your reaction because it's clear you have some understanding of music, that you are thoughtful and empathetic, with the capacity not only to see what a song provokes you to feel but to imagine what the songwriter felt -> this was clear to me even before I glanced at your other videos to see you are, in fact, a musician and a singer; your cover of House of the Rising Sun is stunning, both technically and emotionally. Before I suggest artists and songs, I will take some time to review your other reactions and covers so I can get a better sense of your interests and passions, but for Kansas, another must-listen is Carry On Wayward Son, which might be their most iconic progressive rock song.

My takeaway from "Point of know Return" always made me think it was some kind of warning about increasing technology with the pun on "No being Know". Great channel. New sub. Lead singer is Steve Walsh. Joe Walsh is "Eagles" guitarist. I interpret "Dust in the Wind" to be about having humility (especially in a spiritual sense). Whatever worldly possessions we accumulate are insignificant in comparison to our eternal souls.
Please continue "Kansas" reactions, they're fantastic musicians. I recommend "Song for America", "The Wall", "Child of Innocence", and "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)".

My music listening is self-limited to progressive rock, a genre founded by British bands like Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson. Kansas is an American band which had a nice string of radio hits. Not surprisingly, you've been fed a couple of those radio hits for a first listen.
Back in 2000, Yes and Kansas toured together on the summer ampitheatre outdoor circuit. At first glance, it seemed a strange combo, Yes had exited their 90125 pop era and was playing pure progessive music again. Even "Owner of a Lonely Heart" had gotten a progresiive outro, featuring Steve Howe's guitar that stretched it to about eight minutes. I was in contact with Yes fans online at the time, and they surprised me by telling me Kansas was a really good progressive rock band, and that they had lots of epic, long-form songs on their albums that had never been played on the radio. So I did some deep dives into some of their albums, and readily concluded that Kansas is America's greatest progressive rock band. In second place I'd put Echolyn.
The concert was fun, with Yes and Kansas fans mingling together and proudly displaying band T-shirts and caps from prior concerts. While filing out of the venue, and depending upon the uniforms worn by the various groups of fans, it was either "Wow, Kansas really kicked Yes' ass tonight!" or "Yes blew Kansas off the stage!!" Everybody has there fave.
Eventually some Kansas fans should show up here in the comments. The band has had some personnel changes over the years, the details of which I could not report to you. As members left, they formed their own groups, like Proto-Kaw, that made some great progressive music that carried onwards the Kansas sound and spiritual sensibilities. Like all the neo-progressive bands, the children of Kansas have had a hard time getting any traction with the music-buying public.
Famous Kansas epic: "Song for America" ruclips.net/video/SNID8SHuj7Y/видео.html (good sound, video probably a VCR tape digitzed after significant degradation over time)
Not so famous but excellent Proto-Kaw song "When the Rains Come" ruclips.net/video/CMOv4oDpG1U/видео.html (play it when a squall line is rolling in)

Dust In The Wind was a finger picking exercise from Kerry, and his wife suggested showing it to the rest of the band. Now it is one of the most played and practiced music ever composed. Why? Because any half decent guitar tutor will teach their students by practising it!
