Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Kansas had quite a few songs that were in the 5 to 7 minute range. Even some over 8 minutes. 70’s rockers often had long jams. Free Bird, anyone? Pretty much anything the Allman Brothers ever did. The list goes on...

What you were hearing during the main riff where they sing "How Long..." was a combination of the Keyboard synth, and the Violin playing the same riff with each other in synchrony. Kansas was definitely one of the Class acts of the 70's and brought style and artistry to rock music in a way that only a hand full of bands could do such as ELO, Queen, and Emerson lake and Palmer to name a few. Good choice ...and stew on this a while..They performed all this without a single bit of Auto tune, or over quantizing used as a musical crutch today by artists who are not nearly as musically capable.

Ken Welch and David Rogers, I'll third that! The Wall is an amazing song with a real epic ending; not just a repetitive fadeout. To me, the whole Point of Know Return album was a big disappointment after such a great album, Leftoverture. But, since Point of Know Return is the first Kansas song Claire and Walker have heard, I don't blame them for liking it a lot.

Saw Kansas back in 77 for this tour in Chicago-my home town. It's amazing what this band went through to get to this point. Probably one of the hardest working bands to ever take the stage. From bar room band to international stars in the matter of 2 great selling albums. The lineup has changed over the years, but back in the 70's KANSAS was the band to see. Great concerts, great tours, great musicians. They have toured many times opening for YES. I was lucky to see one of those tours in Michigan. Talk about a great night of excellent music. The entire album is fantastic, and it also had their biggest hit, an acoustic piece called "Dust in the Wind." It started out as a finger-picking exercise, and Kerry Livgren's wife (the blonde guy with the mustache,) convinced him to show it to the rest of the band. He didn't think it would go over, but it was their biggest hit. Two years before I was a freshman in high school, Kansas played at what would be my high school. Kansas is still recording and playing today, with two original members, drummer Phil Erhart and Rich Williams, the guitarist in the tux. They spent more than a year touring with Queen as their opening act, while Queen was the biggest rock act in the world. Freddy and the guys were all big fans of Kansas, thanks to their fantastic musicianship and the fact they had been playing together for about 6 years in several different lineups before their big hit album, Leftoverture (their 4th album.) In 1978, they performed as one of the headline acts at "Canada Jam" in Ontario, playing before 110,000 people.

The whole band was talented, the song Carry on my wayward son which is the Supernatural soundtrack theme, and The wall was a great song...also if you can find a video of him playing the spider, as it looks like a spider crawling up the keyboards...he's just that good. Other 'unorthodox instruments for rock bands' acts include Jethro Tull (the story goes my sister used to be able to play the flute solo in "Locomotive Breath" ALONG WITH THE RADIO), Moody Blues (more flute and occasional assists from a full orchestra), Electric Light Orchestra (as the name suggests, they made good use of their string section), and Emerson, Lake & Palmer (there is nothing quite like Keith Emerson's Moog synthesizer). Honorable mention to Barenaked Ladies for occasionally busting out the full-size bass instead of a bass guitar. (Also I just. Love them.)

In my Opinion, Kansa Is Of The Highest Level Of Musicianship, Arrangements, and Compositions and are of the Greatest Of All Time. The Sum Of their Various Parts, brings them into a realm of the Very finest Of maybe a Handful of Bands, every part just makes sense, and every song in this Band's Discography Creates Such An Epic Vision, much as The Horizon to Horizon Epic Landscapes Of The Land of Kansas from which they come.

As mentioned, the main riff is played by both the keyboardist and the violinist at the same time in the same key. The effect is similar to that heard in many Deep Purple songs where Ritchie Blackmore and John Lord play the same riff in the same key. It gives the riff a fuller, more textured sound.
While Kansas didn't garner a whole lot of AM radio play, they were a staple of the FM Album Oriented Rock (AOR) format and continue to be popular on Classic Rock stations across the country. The mix of Progressive Rock sensibilities and solid lyrical content made them somewhat unique in the 70s.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to
Red Rocks (Colorado/God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls.
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
    I still have this LP./Album.
It's great watching young people enjoy music I grew up with and dig it like I do/did.
PS I was a sailor for a very long time so this song had special meaning to me.

As someone who is loath to admit that they remember when this song was brand new (!), I agree 100% that this song should have been a much bigger hit for Kansas. It really was better than almost anything else they did.

This is a gift from him that I am sure you both will come to realize a bit later on in your journey in life! Great Job Dad if you are the person choosing the great music these young people are being exposed to!

@@3YearsApart1613 Thank you so very much for your response. I've tried to share music from my youth (70s and beyond) with my granddaughter....to no avail. She won't even give it a chance...despite the glaringly superior musicianship that is represented in this music, as compared to the manufactured drivel that constitutes the majority of current trends in popular music. I've been a devout "metalhead" from the age of 11 and much of the current metal scene does well to acknowledge much of this music to which your kids are reacting, as fundamentally influential.
I would LOVE to know what your kids would think of artists like Steve Vai.....or even bands like Triumph or Dream Theater.
Again, thank you for the kind and thoughtful response....and I thank all of you from r doing what you do....it gives me a little hope....and that goes a long way.
      Respectfully,
      Dave

Walker is spot on, some of the best and koolest songs usually had instruments that weren’t usually ordinary in the rock music bag of goodies. And yes Claire there were a lot of musicians back in the 70’s that looked like Jesus. One day we’ll get to actually see Him, but for now enjoy the music and Rock On. 🙂

Another gem from my 8-track case back in high school. This album "Leftoverture" was a must have back then. I had tickets to see them when I was going to mechanics school at Camp Lejeune back in the summer of '77. Loaded up a couple of buddies, got some gas and beer and was on the way, until we heard on the radio the concert was cancelled. 😲
