Yes. When I was kid, my older sisters played Leftoverture every morning while they got ready for school and I loved the songs I heard through the wall (no pun intended). One morning after they had left, I went into their room and played their turntable. I hadn't realized that the songs were consecutive on the same record; I thought my sisters were changing it to play the best song of other albums.

Kerry Livgren who wrote this song was going through a spiritual journey and was referring to the wall he had built within himself keeping him from the true riches of paradise and how he needed to tear it down and reach the other side. Steve Walsh's vocals on this are awesome and the orchestration, as always, is immaculate.

Most all of America never understood that Kansas was the greatest Christian Rock band of all time. SO good that most of their fans did not even see it. Kerry Livegren was very religious and he wrote most their music. They had a huge lyrical association with God, American Folklore and native American Indians. I am not into Christian rock but it is quite obvious in this song, just read their lyrics. i.e.: Gold and diamonds cast a spell it is not for me I know it well. The riches that I seek are waiting on the other side. (He is seeking Heaven in the afterlife). More ... To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
And those are few who've seen it through to glimpse the other side
The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
"The Wall" is symbolic of what obstacles separate this life from the next, and Livegren is trying to discover the path in life to get beyond it. Even if you are not spiritual in any way, just how beautiful is this song and what a wonderful message of hope and peace does the writer share?

i really don't care about the Christian angle.
i'm just into Kansas for the music.
thankfully, they were subtle enough not to shove that stuff down our throats.

This Kansas fan's favorite Kansas song. Majestic, powerful, might be Steve Walsh's best performance singing, master musicians at their best. Lyrically, a song that is about spiritual searching, but, can be interpreted as overcoming obstacles( see Kerry Livgren's autobiography " Seeds of Change " for details).

Kerry Livgren was not yet a Christian at this point. He was fascinated with world religions and Native American culture though and clearly his lyrics during this period were seeking some kind of spirituality. Not only a musical genius in my opinion but a great lyricist.

"The path that I have chosen, now has led me to a wall". NO, for many years I blamed myself(like a the good little christian I was) for not being able to go down the "correct" path. If only I could tear down that wall. And then for decades, I still clung with hope to those ending words, "There is no loss." Until it was way too late. Sure, I was eventually able to tear down that wall, but the damage done was insurmountable. NO, my mistake had been desperately trying to follow the wrong path, the one that society and christianity imposed on a young mind.Ha, but at least I never made what would have been the cruelest mistake made by others like me...I never had a str8 relationship, let alone marriage. The closet wall(s) gradually crumbled, but alas, there remained nothing but loss...and emptiness.

The wall is about Livgren's spiritual thirst for meaning and peace. The wall was the barrier between peace and striving to find joy through GOLD AND DIAMONDS (wealth, fame and fortune) which proved ultimately meaningless. In one of the lyrics from other songs he talks about his philosophical religious quests as "jester's promenade". He dabbled in eastern mysticism, Buddhism, and urantianism until finally landing his faith in Christ. The Wall is an epic song that is the perfect counter balance to Carry on Wayward Son.

This was during songwriter Kerry Livgren’s “searching” phase, and the process was so clear and vulnerable that it sucked people in. In the neighborhood of 1980, Kerry realized that his search had ended in discovering Christ.
The direction of Kansas shifted dramatically in Audiovisions, a blatantly Christian album. Eventually the band would split, and Livgren would go on to found his group “A.D.” which was a prog Christian music group with a phenomenal discography.
Kerry Livgren is the man. Giving his credit to the Most High God.

  • @sjdanthem

Kerry Livgren carried the band through this album - pretty much writing both the lyrics and music to all the songs. He was going through a Christian awakening at the time and I tend to see every song through this lens. Keep this in mind and go through the lyrics on the whole album. It becomes pretty obvious.

    I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see
The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall
And with each passing day I feel a little more like something dear was lost
It rises now before me, a dark and silent barrier between
All I am and all that I would ever want to be
It's just a travesty, towering, marking off the boundaries
    My spirit would erase
To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
And those are few who've seen it through to glimpse the other side
The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air
It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me
It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me
    I want to see
Gold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me I know it well
The riches that I seek are waiting on the other side
There's more that I can measure in the treasures of the love that I can find
And though it's always been with me
I must tear down the wall and let it be
All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony
Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross
    There is no loss.

As some have stated Kerry Livgren who penned many of the songs for Kansas was derply seeking spiritual enlightenment and it was reflected in the lyrics of almost all of the music of the band. The Wall really reoresents the seoaration of our lives on earth and life beyond earth and our quest to be who we need to be in our lives to seek the grace and riches beyond this life. Listening to Kansas has always been a very spiritual experience. Carry On My Wayward Son They'll be Peace When you are Done Lay your Weary Head to Rest Dont You Cry No More . Dust in the wind basically profoundly says life is previous and fleeting in wanting another by, but our lives no matter who you are are just Dust in the Wind. Their song Portrait (He Knew), is about Christ. He knew, He Knew more than me and you what was he going through? Tells the story really. Miracles Out of Nowhere is another gem. Kansas had a way of mixing their anazing musicality from classical to Rock with a spiritual message of Mass Aooeal. As musicians they were bar to none. If you got to see them live in the 7O s abd 80s's like myself , you just saw how spectacular they were as musicians.

John 12:24-26 New International Version (NIV)
Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Reminds me of The Pilgrim's progress.

I can't remember this song, although I'm "a Bicentennial Edition" (graduated Highschool in 1976)! I'm guessing it wasn't "on the jukebox"; at the various "Watering Holes'" that I used to "hang at", back in those days. (I really don't know what year, it was cut, yet.) I plan on going to listen to it, some more! (I think he might be talking about a point, or multiple points in life; that I have come to refer to as: "getting stuck in neutral"!?

Kerry Livgrin was one of the songwriters in Kansas and after he quit the band he went on to be a preacher because he was always drawn towards that kind of work. So when I listen to this song it's possible that this is a wall separating God and man and that he can't wait to get over that wall. Now that's just mystical you know thinking maybe, but it's what sticks in my head and has stuck in my head for almost 50 years. Peace and love!

I absolutely agree and have thought the same. Such power in the words, “And looking back on all who wait to cross, ‘There is no loss!’”, is a deeply spiritual lyric.

@@robertmoraga1501 well now I feel better about my interpretation. No one is agreed with me my whole life or ever since the album came out. But I don't think they were very spiritual either.

After Kansas, Kerry Livgren recorded Christian albums as the band A.D, and recorded solo albums as well. Kansas bassist Dave Hope also became a Christian, played in A D with Livgren, then became a pastor.
