That whole "Point of Know Return" album is fire! It was a favorite of mine for many, many years. The album before that, "Leftoverture", was also a banger. Kansas had some great music back then. I saw them live at the Checkerdome in St. Louis back in 1977 and the show was amazing. They were great live. Steve Walsh's voice was one of the best in rock at that time. 1977 was a great year for albums. Glad you finally did the title track after reacting to "Dust In the Wind", the second single from "Point of Know Return". It was such a privilege to have great music like this during my high school years. We had no idea how much we would still love this music when we were in our 60's like I am now. With the benefit of life experience, I also have a better understanding of some of the deeper lyrics. Music in that era was, as we used to say, the bomb.
I think your thinking of Kiel Auditorium. They played 2 nights in a row in November of 77 for this tour, but at Kiel Auditorium, not the Checkerdome, but they did play there in 79 on the Monolith tour.
@@DocRock71 Goodness, maybe it was the Kiel lol. It's been so many years ago and I've seen so many concerts, I must have gotten them mixed up. It was late in the year when I saw them, so you're probably right. Thank you!
@@Cheryltwin2012 I have entire concerts from the 70's and 80s that I have forgotten about completely, until friends reminded me in the last few years!💯 My memory is complete shit now!😁I also mix up who I saw shows with. They all blur together after 40 or 50 freaking years! LOL. Can you imagine if we had smartphones back then? I'd have a LOT more memories!
@@Cheryltwin2012 I have an account on "Setlist FM"(it's free) which has the dates and sometimes entire set lists from most popular bands going back to the early 70s! I've been able to look up a bunch of shows I went to at the Fox Theater, Keil, Checkerdome, Westport In The Round, etc...I finally was able to even track down the dates from those Superjam shows they did at Busch Stadium in the mid 70s during the summer. It's a great sight if your interested! At the bottom of each listing, there's an "I was there" button...you can create an archive of all the shows you can remember...or cant! 😃

Proof that Americans can do progressive rock! Kansas was full of musical virtuosos, and this song is a nice bite of what they can do. Hope you get a chance to hear "Death of Mother Nature Suite," "Song for America," and "Hold On"!

Yesterday, I was watching your reaction to Carry On Wayward Son (again) thinking, "It's been too long since he did Kansas." Miracles Out of Nowhere is a song and the name of a documentary about the band. Song for America is also very good.
Not a big fan of Kansas, but the documentary is terrific.
I saw Kansas half a dozen times during the mid 70s to mid 80s. Man, Steve Walsh was one hell of an entertaining frontman. The dude would be singing his ass off, going back and forth from the keyboards to the center mic, would jog in place playing keyboards, doing quick HANDSTANDS on his keyboards! He was wild, like an Energizer bunny. An amazing vocalist and keyboard player, as well was entertaining showman....and that was just ONE guy in the band! The others are all great as well. Such a great band.

Love this since it came out, as a little kid I never got enough of it.
"Always leave them wanting more" is a popular quote from the entertainment industry. Few can appreciate that sentiment today. They seem to always want an "all you can eat buffet" of everything.
Every song on their first LP, Leftoverture is a gem...each one so unique.
I wore the needle out on that album.
Actually Leftoverture was their fourth album. The previous three (eponymous first album, Song for America, and Masque) were all very good.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to
Red Rocks (Colorado/God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. Roughly $1.00 gas on bikes. 600 miles round trip, in the summer. Hell yeah.😎😎😎😎
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it.

Great reaction. I encourage you to listen to Kansas' "The Wall" from the Leftoverture album.
The band, at this time, was purposely trying to write shorter songs. That being said, the primary songwriter here(Steve Walsh) usually wrote shorter songs, and (usually) not as progressive as the band's other primary songwriter( Kerry Livgren), who was the one who wrote the more progressive songs(two from this album that are very progressive: " Closet Chronicles " and " Hopelessly Human ") The whole album is fire, including the other big hit, " Dust In The Wind ", which, at that point in time, was actually unlike any other in their catalog(DITW is aan acoustic, almost folk rock song).
As always with Kansas, musicianship and vocals are A+++/ Live versions are a bit longer, usually a small organ solo closes it, with the " How Long...to the point of know return lyrics " theatrically stretched out,
In addition to having to limit length to get radio time, there was also a total time limit for a side of a vinyl album. Often it was a choice between making a song longer vs. including an additional track.
Their cuts are more progressive if you like that. Very talented band.

Their music was so dense that a 3 minute song by them is worth 6 minutes by other bands
it was short to be radio-friendly.

Kansas is the best American prog band,
So believe it or not I've seen them twice. Once with Queen, believe it or not 1973, when I was pretty young. The 2nd time much later than that (about 1995) in a bar. But that time they had Steve Morse on guitar. Steve Walsh was doing some handstands on the keyboard. Great show as you would imagine. At least this album and "Leftoverture" are masterpieces.
