In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to the full album Point of Know Return by Kansas (released 1977)
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician, on the road at age 17 for two years, then went part-time ever since, while holding day careers including chef and spiritual health care while raising a family.
As a producer I've made hundreds of my own songs for media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I mostly abandoned the prog genre in the 90s but have returned to it now with vigour 30 years later. So much prog! My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk / acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electronic as well). At the end of 2022 I fell into a shoegaze rabbit hole (so you will see lots featured here.)

Nobody's Home: lyrically, about extraterrestrials coming to earth, and finding it destroyed, almost a church hymn musically.
Hopelessly Human is one of Kerry Livgren's spiritual searching songs, with a great vocal dual between Robby Steinhardt(RIP) and Steve Walsh, a great jam session in the middle, Steinhardt's violin solo a highlight, the band's teamwork on display. A great album closer

In my opinion, Kansas is the best Prog band from the States. They were right their with the Brits innovative spirit of the Prog genre. 🙂

When I saw the concert for the Point of Know Return album, they closed the show with Nobody’s Home…when it hits the silence at the end of the main song, all the lights went out, you hear the knock on the door then the lights came back on with the outdo but the band was gone! Of course they came back for encores but it was awesome!
BTW, that was at the International Amphitheater in Chicago! As always with Kansas, a fantastic show!

I believe there is a bootleg of that concert! Unfortunately, the end that you speak is cut off...

Kansas had commercial success in the 80s but was under pressure to create hits until they were dropped by their label. BTW, their "disco" song was People the South Wind which was a minor hit in 1980. It pained me to hear you say Sparks of the Tempest as "disco"-ish though.

Hopelessly Human is so masterful and solid. It’s my favorite on this album. Kerry wrote this one, he was really on fire with his writing at this time. This album is a great follow up to Leftoverture. Check that one out.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to
Red Rocks (Colorado/God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. Roughly $1.00 gas. Seriously worth it.
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
    I'm hit the trifecta 05/06/2022😎
    I still have this LP./Album.

Do ALL of Leftoverture, their 4th and best album. A definite 10/10!

No. It was written by Kerry Livgren, the prog Maestro - my favorite song on the album - Hopelessly Human - which closes the album.

I think Leftoverture, the album right before Point of Know Return, was their absolute PEAK! I recommend that you purchase Kansas, Song for America, Masque, Leftoverture, Two for the Show, Monolith, AudioVisions, and Somewhere to Elsewhere.

Thanks Dean. Kansas produced only great stuff right thru 1980. This album may have been their peak peak but the first album is still my favorite. 😎

This was their peak. Of course Leftoverture put them on the map. The Masque album and Leftoverture are my favorites. Hope to hear you react to Leftoverture next.
