Fear not guys, the latest incarnation of Kansas is phenomenal, you will absolutely love the concert I'm sure. IMHO Phil Ehart is probably the most underrated drummer in prog rock history, extraordinary talent and precision, he was also the catalyst and driving force behind the band's formation. He and Rich have seemingly been the mainstay and custodians of the band's rich legacy which all current members faithfully carry on. Long may they continue! Cheers
They are amazing. I have to say that I still am missing Robby Steinhart's lower vocal range. His lower vocals gave a wider vocal range and variety in Kansas music.

Something to keep in mind...... this album was recorded all in one week, late at night, in a studio that was being used by another band during the day. And this band has never disappointed live..... they are one of the few bands whose material is so good that it literally brings me to tears, and in many ways transcends the members of the band itself.... the material is just that good. I know for a fact that you guys will enjoy the show.
It always amazes me how talented these guys were at such a young age. Imagine being less than 25 years old writing and executing music at this level.
Kerry Livgren is the finest composer, orchestrator, lyricist, and multi-instrumentalist (lead guitar, piano, synthesizer, etc. My favorite band by a long shot. Saw them live 8 times in the 70s and early 80s, and they are phenomenal musicians-so tight!
It's called Apercu/ Death of Mother Nature Suite and to be fully appreciated you have to listen to both part's. And I did have the incredible pleasure of seeing it live in 1979.

Would you listen to a french band whose vocals were in english, the name of which was "Tai Phong". I recommend "Season's end" from the album "windows", released in 76..

It's criminal they are not in Rock and Roll HOF. They were amazing in the 1970s! Interesting fact they opened a lot for Queen in 1975.
The history of this band is so wrought with under-appreciation that their exclusion from that joke of an “institution” is par for the course, and really nothing to be upset about. The RRHOF has less credibility than any other HOF of any ilk, and any exclusion from it is not a poor reflection on any band at this point.
First 3 Kansas albums are prog bliss. Very enjoyable.

One of my Kansas faves is Miracles Out of Nowhere. Awesome polyphony in the instrumental bridge, in 7/8!
Here are three fan favorites that Kansas always plays that you have not reacted to. "Miracles Out of Nowhere", "The Wall" and "Icarus: Bourne on Wings of Steel". You MUST listen to these masterpieces before you go to the concert.
The first time I saw KANSAS was in Milwaukee in 1974. They were the opening act for Hawkwind. I never ended up following Hawkwind, but Kansas became a lifelong love. Seeing them in Milwaukee in July. I worry about so many original members gone, but I watched 15:35 a few videos from 2022 and they do sound very good.

How good is this song and what a debut album! Kerry Livgren was such a stellar songwriter. His mind worked in wonderful ways! Phil Erhart is an underrated drummer.....one of the best ever. Robbie is so good on violin and it is him here and yes, he's the vocalist on this song as well. So happy you are getting to see Kansas....what a band, still touring after all this time.....and still so good in concert. Hope you enjoy them live. Remember, as well as the two original members, you have Billy Greer who's been on bass since the mid 80's and violinist David Ragsdale who has been associated with the band since the 90's.....they are not a tribute band! Also, their current keyboardist Tom Brislin has toured with Yes. It will be great! I'm now rambling but you should try some of their later two albums with the new line up's....they still sound like classic Kansas on those albums even though there are no Livgren songs.
You NEED to check out "Journey From Mariabronn" from the same album. Incredible!
It's tragic that this is such an obscure song. I've long considered it one of their very best. If I had requested a reaction video of only one Kansas song out of all their extensive discography it would have been this one. That first album put Kansas on the map as one of the premier prog bands not only in America, but in the world. Outstanding choice. Greybeard has excellent taste.
I grew up in Kansas and was aware of the band a couple of months before the first album was released. I was at the state capitol in Topeka for a high school event and a friend who lived there pointed out the massive John Steuart Curry mural on the wall of the rotunda and said, "That'd make a hell of an album cover, wouldn't it?" Then he told me about these local guys who had a record contract and were going to use the 'Tragic Prelude' mural as their first album cover. I bought a copy the day it was released and wore it out. They were and are massively talented and the first six or so studio albums are all classics.
Went to see Kansas about a year ago, sat five rows back, probably the best thing I’ve ever heard
I saw Kansas in Amarillo, Texas in 1982. You are going to love the concert!
Oh, and Robbie Steinhardt is lead vocal on this with Walsh doing much too on lead vox. So good, yet still, there was Steve Walsh in the band. Together they created such beautiful harmonies. And Robbie's violin...holy shit.
The first I heard Kansas was "Can I Tell You" in 1974 on an album rock station. The song blew me away. I had never heard anything like it. Then, I got the album. The cover was amazing and the picture of the band on the back was very cool to a 17 y/o wannabe. Incredible instrumentation on every track! Amazing lead vocals and harmonies. Great writing by Livgren and Walsh. They were this young long-hair's favorite band in the 70's. "Lonely Wind" gets overlooked on this album but what a great track. I enjoyed watching two young people react to Kansas the way you have.
This song kind of like Siamese twins belongs together with "Death of Mother Nature Suite" which follows it immediately on the album, almost can't have the one without the other and that one you will absolutely love too. Guaranteed.

Yep, the segues in this album are so incredible. I was such a fanboy seeing them on Kirshner's rock concert doing "Can I Tell You" which is such a great tune also.
I think where you may hear oriental chords/melodies, I hear Native American themes.

I can only tell you two, when they brought the "violin" into the band, when they brought these two incredibly talented vocalists it changed our World for the Better !!! They were about "album rock". Please listen in its entirety. Very Emotional Tunes that they play. Not so Radio-Friendly at all times, but incredible compositions.
They didn't know what they were doing in terms of being in the studio, and they did THIS. Of course, Kerry Livgren's songwriting has much to do with the excellence( and they are all great musicians). Robby Steinhardt the star, as lead vocalist and violinist
But, this should have been done with the song that follows, " Death Of Mother Nature Suite ", both songs are meant to be listened to TOGETHER
The concerns about the lineup: Original drummer Phil Ehart and original guitarist Rich Williams are still with the band, Bassist/vocalist Billy Greer has been with the band since 1986, violinist/guitarist David Ragsdale has had two stints with the band that combined are over 20 years, keyboardist Tom Brislin has done stints with numerous bands, including Yes. And lead singer/keyboardist Ronnie Platt capably fills Steve Walsh's shoes(don't let the haters tell you otherwise). The current band is superb, a Kansas fan since 1975(and who has seen them about 30 times) telling you this

This song epitomizes all that Kerry was doing in his search for answers and he found them in 79 I think,and glad he took us on his journey with him.
Fantastic debut album -- I hope their 2023 tour includes "Journey From Mariabronn", which Kansas has played for their double live album.
If you get the "Classic Albums Collection" boxset (all their albums up to 'Drastic Measures' on CD), there is a bonus 'Two For The Show' live disc.....it's possibly better than the first one.....some fantastic versions ending with an absolutely kickass rendition of 'Bringin' It Back'. Worth checking out....unless you already have it!😉

Having been a lifelong Kansas fan, Apercu/ Death of Mother Nature Suite, is one song that is under appreciated! This album was their first, but they paid their dues for many months as White Clover! Traveling around the state at clubs big and small, getting better all the time! Those first few years as Kansas were some of the best Prog music ever recorded!😎
I had the pleasure of seeing the original line up in 1980, at their Audio-Visions tour.
The thing with Kansas is, this first album came out in 1974! There were literally no bands in the States playing this style of prog rock back then that I know of. Their influences were obvious, Yes, Genesis, ELP etc, but they forged their own path and had their own sound. I'm still devastated they never really came to the UK. Very occasionally played a couple of dates a long long way from me. They're still one of my favourite bands to this day. Steve Walsh around the time of Point Of Know Return was probably the best singer in the world. If only I could go back in time and see them then.
I feel for you I was lucky to see them throughout my entire adult life from 17 years old to 67 years old I’m going to see them in August 2024. On a more sobering note the drummer Phil Ehart is recovering from a heart attack and heart surgery right now so I’m hoping by August he will be back behind the drums. The drummer that filled in for him two weeks ago did a fantastic job, but you know, it ain’t Phil

Thanks for the reaction. More Kansas please. Same album..."Journey from Mariabronn". You won't regret it. Kansas is the best American prog band ever. All virtuoso musicians. There is still a wealth of deep cuts from 1974-1980 you haven't touched yet. Also, you need to check out the documentary film "Miracles out of Nowhere". One of the best music docs out there.
What a coincidence ! I have all Kansas studio LPs from beginning to 1984 ...... when remastered CDs were released I bought everything of the Steve Walsh era, except for this one. The LP had some good songs, but the sound was ... ok. Now, centuries later I finally bought the remastered CD of Kansas' first album two weeks ago. Immediately during the first listen I thought, wow, that sounds so much better than my LP ... the whole album is really good, not quite as good yet as Song for America and Leftoverture, but surely worth to be listened to more than once. Apercu already has typical Kansas elements, for example Magnum Opus had similar instrumental parts.
I saw Kansas back in 1981 and 1988, both with Steve Walsh, great concerts, especially the one in 1981 with the original line up.
The new singer is pretty good, but there is only one Steve Walsh. But I'm sure you will enjoy the concert very much 🤘
Trust me, Tom Brislin is the newest member, toured with YES and Renaissance, and Meat Loaf, on keyboards and vocals, Billy Greer, on bass and vocals, David Ragsdale, violin/guitar.vocals, Ronni Platt, lead vocals and keyboards, Rich Williams, lead guitar, Phil Erhart, drums an percussion play ALL Kansas with the same dynamicas and feel of the originals, and the NEW stuff as recent as 2016 AND 2020 is every bit as amazing.
First time seeing them before Masque came out,they did entire first album from beginning to end in sequence without stopping before launching into Song For America then Masque opening with Icarus and going from there.Exceptional night.Bought it next day,listened to it and was back in concert again.Blew me away again.Been a fan since then seeing them 4 times.

Several years after Kerry Livgren left Kansas he formed the band Proto-Kaw. It was basically the original lineup from their first Kansas album. Proto-Kaw means “Before became after”. So the band before went full circle and became the band after.
Proto Kaw means "Early Kansas", good stuff indeed
Kansas is my favorite American band. I first got into them via Leftoverture and Point Of Know Return in 1978. Also in 1978, the band released their double live album Two For The Show and I got that as a present. I saw them in 1979 when they were touring Monolith. Steve Walsh was always jumping around at his organ and when they closed with "Carry On Wayward Son, Steve did a handstand. He was so full of energy.
In an interview, Steve told a story about how this girl wanted her money back because he didn't jump around and do handstands anymore. He thought to himself, "is this all that matters now? What about the music?" So he decided to stop all that.
There was a concert of them in Texas in 1980 when they were touring Audio-Visions. I have seen it on You Tube and it was great. If you can find it, I highly recommend it. Audio-Visions was the last album for the orininal six-man lineup. Steve left and he was replaced with John Elefante. There was a video in 1982 from the Vinyl Confessions called "Play The Game Tonight" which got a lot o attention on MTV -- that is back when MTV stood for "Music Television" and all they did was play music videos. His voice was not too far off from Steve's voice, but to me, he sounded a bit cheesy. He was on Vinyl Confessions and 1983's Drastic Measures. That second title speaks for itself. It's the worst album Kansas has ever done and it was the first of three Kansas albums not to have a violinist. The other two were Power and In The Shape Of Things.
In 1986, Steve Walsh returned and the band did Power. Both the title track and "All I Wanted" were hits from the album. Kerry Livgren and Robby Steinhardt were gone, but they brought in Steve Morse on guitar, who used to be in the band Dixie Dregs. This lineup also did In The Shape Of Things in 1988. This was the last album where Steve Walsh's voice was still intact.
In 1995, Kansas returned with Freaks Of Nature. It featured new violinist Dave Ragsdale and after the last three allbums with no violinist, they sure made up for it with this album. I love it, but Steve's voice was now more rugged and he was straining to hit the high notes. Kerry was not on the album, but he contributed one song to the album called "Cold Grey Morning". It's a shame this album is out of print now.
I now have all of the studio albums with Steve Walsh, except Always Never The Same from 1998. That album was just the band playing some of their songs with an orchestra. In 2000, the original lineup returned for Somewhere To Elsewhere, though original bassist Dave Hope was only on two tracks, "When The World Was Young" and "Look At The Time. Billy Greer played bass on the other tracks. This album sounded refreshing after 20 years with different lineups. But again, Steve's voice was struggling to hit the high notes. This was the last studio album for Steve, Kerry, and Robby and the band did not record any new material for 16 years.
I really like the two newest studio albums from Kansas, The Prelude Implicit from 2016 and The Absense Of Presence in 2020. Only drummer Phil Ehart and guitarist Rich Williams are still in the band from the beginning. I like the new vocalist, Ronnie Platt. I hope they release more new albums of this quality in the future.
Don Kirchner was a genius for giving the world Kansas. And I love watching people listen to Kansas songs for the first time. Their music is so surprising and amazing and unpredictable. There are so many good songs by them get on it!

This was a new one for me, I don't think I've ever heard a song from Kansas I haven't enjoyed. But this... To me it was almost as great as Magnum Opus!
I saw them a few years ago and in earlier days and they were phenomenal. Believe me, they sound great. Tom Brislin is playing keyboards (he was in Yes during the Symphonic tour. You should watch that DVD). The violinist Robby passed away. The one they've had for about 20 years David Ragdale is great too. You will have a good time at the concert.

So that's the late-great Robby Steinhardt on lead vocals (Violin) and Steve Walsh on back-up/Harmonies, and then lead.
Phil Ehart is one of the most underrated Drummers out there, and you have Steve and Livgren on Organ and Synths. And Livgren & Rich Williams on Guitars, and Dave Hope, another underrated Bassist. And that's Livgren again writing his mini symphonies with all the layers :).
"Apercu" is from an era of Livgren "making up" words that fit for titles of songs. You will have MORE of a Kansas _education_ soon 😉.
In the current line-up, the _only_ 2 original members are Rich and Phil, though Bassist Billy Greer has been with the band since 1985, and his debut for the album "Power" 1986 (which you did "Musicatto" but next time you'll have to do "Musicatto/Taking In the View" - this was also the 1st album with Steve Morse joining Rich Williams on Guitar). I have yet to see them, and I need to purchase their 2 albums.
Also note after "Audiovisions", Steve Walsh quits, and they bring-in "John Elefante", he was in a Prog/Rock band called "Mastodon", he did a fantastic job on "Vinyl Confessions" (with the rest of the original line-up - 1982) and "Drastic Measures" (sadly without violin and Robby Steinhardt - 1983).
I agree, Kansas must have taken Kerry Livgren's lead, and everyone plays pretty precise. They are not "sloppy" or "off the cuff", its fixed to Kerry's compositions. This is why they are always in battle with Rush for me, and their lyrics are always as prolific as Neil Peart.
So . . . maybe the next one you could do is "Journey from Mariabronn" from the same album (again, a fictitious place from Kerry's mind). Steve Walsh's voice is astonishing on that one. Its too bad there isn't a good quality version of the Live/staged song (Journey from...), from their 1st appearance on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (TV program from the 1970's), which I never saw as a kid, even though I watched that show almost every Saturday with my Dad at 11:30pm. Though I did see their "Promo Videos" for the _Monolith_ tracks when it debuted on the same show.

Nick & Lex, more Kansas. I love that band seen them ,I think it's up to 11 times now. The last time was their 40th anniversary show in Pittsburgh. Kansas credits Pittsburgh for help putting them over & they've always been a favorite here. But at that show, Steve Walsh was still with them & only in Pittsburgh they brought back Kerry Livgren & Dave Hope. Robbie Steinhardt was supposed to be there, but had his heart attack just weeks or months before the show. It was a great show, but those origins in their prime was just amazing.
Steve Morris was in the band for a spell also. Before Deep Purple & after the Dixie Dregs.
The only band I've seen more than Kansas is Rush, who I seen about 25 times. And if course I love them to.

Icarus-Borne On Wings Of Steel from their Masque album. Child of Innocence is a great one from that album also.

Kerry Livgren was an amazing composer, orchestrator, lyricist, & multi-instrumentalist (lead guitar & keyboards, including piano & synth. So sad when he left the band in 1983, but he went on to make incredible solo music and with 2 other bands - AD and Proto-Kaw. May I recommend when the Rains Come on the P-K album The Wait of Glory
Listen to Kansas song journey from mariabronn, off their first album. After you listen to it, then realize, this is their FIRST album!!! Really? No one does something with that much talent on a first album! Except Kansas. They did.
I saw Kansas warm-up for kiss in the local skating rink in 1975. And I’ve seen every tour since then. I’m estimating at least 40 times I’ve seen them. Even now! I try to see them two or three times a year in Indianapolis Chicago and Joliet Illinois. They play the songs in concert like you’re listening to the album you are going to freak out😮

What a great song. Complex with a marvelous interplay and layering of instruments. And some good rocking too. Lovely stuff!

This band has been a favorite of mine for over 40 years and I still never get tired of their music.
As another said, you will greatly enjoy a live concert. Key original members Rich Williams on lead guitar and Phil Ehart on drums, bass player has been in the band 40 years, violinist/guitarist has been in the band off and on for 30 years, so trust me they are extremely tight and true to the music.

I've seen Kansas a million times in a million different line ups. The downside now is that there are only 2 original members left - Phil (drums) and Rich (guitar). The upside is that this current line up is *THE* best I've ever heard them and that includes seeing them with mostly the original members on stage in the past. They tour year round so DEFINITELY go see them if they are in your area. In fact, they are promoting their 50th year anniversary tour right now, so I'm sure they are planning an unbelievable show.

Good point about being masters of their instruments. But keep in mind, this was their first album! You should try Lamplight Symphony from the Song for America album. IMO the ultimate love song.

What a great choice for a Kansas tunes! I bought this album after seeing these guys on Don Kirchners Rock Concert. What a great album. One of my favorites ever! You are going to love the Concert! Saw them just a couple years ago!!
Hi guys, it's an interesting comment you make about there being not as many Kansas requests out there as there are for the other big prog bands. Well Kansas reactions always seem to result in many passionate comments from your community as you can see here. I remember making a comment on Kansas nine or ten months ago regarding my difficulty in buying in emotionally to their music at that time. I had some really positive suggestions on what songs to look out for and what to listen to and I connect far better with Kansas now. It's good to hear them again on the channel xx
I heard an interview with Billy Greer and the 50th anniversary tour they are pulling out songs that have not been played in 45 years such as The Pinnacle from the Masque album.
Maybe this will be played as well, who knows.
I saw Kansas live in 1975 in Edmonton, Alberta. They opened for REO Speedwagon. Well! Kansas completely blew everyone away. By the time REO came on, the crowd's energy was spent. Much to the chagrin of REO as they feed on a crowd's energy. Anyway I think both bands new that Kansas had arrived and would be a headliner from then on in. Enjoy your concert this summer!
Kerry Livgren has a solo album with Dio singing lead on a couple songs well worth checking out👍 Kerry also had another band called A.D. that put out a few albums.

The songs were recorded in one take because they were new and weren't given any extra tape. If they messed up. they had to do the whole song again on that tape.
So much good prog out there surely in the top 10 prog bands of all time.
I find Kansas sound like several bands rolled into one.

So happy you played this... One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. I agree that you should continue on and listen to Death of Mother Nature Suite. It's the essential companion piece to Apercu. Still love Kansas after almost 47 years of fandom.
I have seen the original band in 1974 and I believe it was all the same guys in 1990. They are amazing in concert and you will not be disappointed
I bought Leftoverure first, but the debut album was where I became a solid fan. Apercu (pronounced Aa-per-sy) was my favorite.
Saw them in the early 80s in Tulsa. Was a fantastic show. Haven't really followed the band since the early 90s. For some reason, they are rarely mentioned in most conversations about prog. Ridiculous!

No one has more precision than King Crimson, except maybe Mahavishnu Orchestra. Fripp is all about "the work". He knows that "the aim cannot be achieved without suffering" and, as Dostoyevski said, "suffering is the sole origin of consciousness." Siddhartha would agree. Frank Zappa has a different take on the matter, in which he seems to absorb some of the ideas of John Cage. While demanding or inspiring or preferring precision from those he pays, he grants himself the license to create anew every time. As he said, to do otherwise would be tantamount to punching a time clock. He thereby preserves and expands the notion of play. Both approaches produce genius. Fripp, Mahavishnu and Zappa are genius level, like Pink Floyd, and the upper reaches of Yes, Genesis, Gryphon, Renaissance, RTF, PFM, Genital Giant, Mickey Hart, Fred Frith, Iva Bittova, Terry Riley, Subotnick, Golden Earring, Pentangle, Clannad, Strawbs, Temples, Rolling Beach Beetles, etc. Kansas was one of the very few early American prog bands, and represented pretty well for our team. They would never put themselves on the same shelf as the pioneers of prog, nor should most other bands who extend or even stay within the form, rather than creating the form brand new. The former head of the Royal Shakespeare, Peter Brook, who recently died, RIP, wrote eloquently about the different "theaters", including "Dead Theatre" and "Holy Theatre". When things run their course, they run the risk of becoming dead theatre. Long live living theatre, and the creative rites that spring! Thanks for keeping good music alive!

Greer is a good bassist, but it just seems that he just doesn't get the feel of Dave's lyrical lines.

crazy thing about this son (and their debut album songs), it turns 50 this year... recorded in 1973, released in '74 in their debut album.

From my favorite KANSAS album. From my all time favorite band for almost 50 years (until 2021). DO NOT forget Journey from Mariabronn and Death of Mother Nature Suite from the same album. Also check out Lonely Wind but the one from the Live- Two for the Show album and include the piano intro. Saw them first when they opened for Queen in 1974. And many many times since then. Their current lineup is rather exceptional also. Peace.
Most of kerry and steve's co-writings are masterpieces with a very deep and multifaceted character. Journey from Mariabronn,Apercu,Down the Road,The Wall, etc. Apercu is especially great!
