My favorite album of all time. Just a flawless record from start to finish. Steve Walsh was untouchable as a vocalist during the early days of the band. I bought this album for the song Dust In The Wind when I was in Jr. High school... that song was ALL over the radio. I put it on and it just floored me. I had never heard ANYthing like this before. A couple months later, a friend let me hear his copy of All The World's A Stage by Rush, and these two albums completely changed my musical world.
Steve Walsh had such a unique vocal tone. He did not get thin and overly nasal in the upper register of his voice. Just the opposite, in fact. He soared with a wonderful rich timbre up there, and had such amazing pitch control. So accurate but with soul.
One of my favorite albums! This is the only Kansas album I listen to. I play whole album on my way home from work! Instrumentation and lyrics are awesome! Thanks for featuring it on your channel!
I just had the same discovery about Kansas not being a classic rock band as much as they were pioneering prog artists. As of a week ago, this album and The Leftoverture have both become among my favorite albums. :D (This is coming from someone who's favorite band is Car Bomb btw...)
oops, I just realized I thought Joe Walsh and Steve Walsh were the same person. Apologies for this unspeakable gaffe! Now that I know the difference the world makes more sense...
I went to High School & College in Pittsburgh (the University of Pittsburgh) in the 70s. And Kansas was an absolute favorite there. There was a progressive rock radio station, WYDD, on which I listened to Kansas and other prog bands all the time. And Kansas loved the ‘Burgh too, which is why they played their 40th anniversary concert there, and are kicking off their 50th anniversary tour there also. I went to see them so many times during the 70s! What a magnificent, tight band. Better live than in the studio. Oh how I miss them!
5:50 love the Dixie Dregs, I own all their albums on cd. A couple of them, Dregs Of The Earth and also Industry Standard, were difficult to find on cd but I eventually got them.
My friend Michelle was a roadie for the Dregs back in the day. This is a great Kansas album. There were several songs besides “DITW” that got regular radio play when I was listening in the early 80’s, my high school years, such as “Portrait” and the title track.

no problem. Will have more Kansas I'm sure
Dregs were a big fan of KANSAS. Steve Morse did a tour or two playing in the band.
Kansas is/was NEVER reliant on their sound from The Dregs
Strange info:
PORTRAIT (HE KNEW): The inspiration for the song came from Kerry Livgren's admiration for Albert Einstein.
