I agree that the Secret World Live Tour version of this song, from 1993, is the must-see version. In fact, that entire concert film is absolutely brilliant.
@@danielmcbriel1192 I think you're being very disrespectful to Papa Wemba who does a great job on the Secret World Tour. Paula Cole was eating pizza on the settee and watching tele when she got the call to join the tour at short notice, again her performance was fine.
@@dougoneill7266 Youssou is the original voice from the album and is simply part of the piece. Unfortunately, I don't know the Papa Wemba version without Paula Cole because my brother didn't pick up the concert tickets at the time. Paula may have a great voice, but she still just goes "lalala".
His live shows are incredible! Not to be missed. He’s currently touring after a very long absence. Make every effort to attend a performance! You’ll remember it forever.
The word you are looking for is “transcendent.” Certain songs just have the power to transport you to a spiritual plane and this is one of the best ever.
Another fine reaction! There are singers, musicians, performers and songwriters. Then there are "artists"! Peter has always been an artist of great prowess. ❤
As has already been said, the Secret world version with Paula Cole on back up vocals is THE live version of this song. As to your comment about the feeling that it gave you, there’s a reason why in mankind’s oldest belief ceremonies music was an integral part.
Almost started to get emotional! It's impossible not to in the face of such an emotional, raw expression of love and spirituality. Watch the Secret World tour version too.
Nice, and thanks for this. I really enjoyed the "Secret World" live tour a bit more as it seemed more dynamic and fresher to me. All the same, this was nice.
Saw Peter Gabriel in concert. So good. The tall bald bassist is Tony Levin. He's incrediblly innovative and talented. I can always tell when it's Tony Levin playing the bass in the background of any song bc he has his own unique sound. He has played bass for Peter Gabriel for years. But he also plays for other artists as well. He is his own musical entity. I've seen him play live a few times. 🙌
The live version in the early 1990s is the best. It's the one with Paula Cole. No other version comes close, not because the other versions are bad, but because the live performance with Paula Cole is so good.
Peter Gabriel has gone through different phases of his life, from Genesis and progressive rock, to commercial (and non-commercial) music, Peter Gabriel is a unique person who reincarnated his creativity all the time. I like songs like: "Sledgehammer", "Shock The Monkey", "Steam", "Big Time", songs that have had a lot of commercial success.
As much as I love Peter Garbriel in Genesis, his solo stuff is soooo good! My favorite is Salsbury Hill from his first album. Excellent. I saw him play at the Palladium in NYC back in the early '90's, a concert that stands out because I remember him walking past the crowd in front of the theatre and no one noticing him - I waved hello dicretelely and he smiled at me. The same kind of universal brotherhood at the concert - especially when he played the song ' Biko'.
Peter Gabriel. Wow. One of the most beautiful male voice and a musical genius. Fabulous live. I saw him on the So tour and then in 2003. Very different concerts but his voice is the same. I hope to see him one more time,.
It's a party every time he does this song live. There's another version where he's younger that is worth the look. It's fun too. This song to him is like Phil Collins In The Air Tonight ... just a killer live in concert
Just over two weeks ago I completed my Genesis bingo card by seeing the awesome Peter Gabriel at the O2 Arena in London. (I've seen Mike + The Mechanics, Steve Hackett twice, and last year I saw Genesis themselves on their farewell concert.) Yes, that is what Peter Gabriel does. For over two and a half hours, that's what he does. This song was the first Encore, and it was worth waiting for. What a privilege it was to see this in person. The only downside was that about five percent of the audience got up and left after Solsbury Hill, which ended the main part of the concert. You wonder if people know how concerts work. So there were people streaming down the stairs as Peter and the band came back on stage and this one started up. You may find videos of that concert on You Tube, maybe even on a channel near here . . . 😉 Solo Gabriel songs: Biko (which was the second Encore and the end of the concert); Solsbury Hill; Big Time; Red Rain; Don't Give Up (which is a duet, originally with Kate Bush), Sledgehammer. He has a new album out and the songs are phenomenal. The good news is he seems to be in good health and good voice, and was talking about 'the next project', so I have every hope of seeing him again.
This is a wonderful interpretation of this song, although I agree the Secret World clip is must see. I got to see Gabriel in the round at Madison Square Garden, and it was so much fun. I've seen him four times so far, and plan to see him again in Sept. For me, his most moving song is "Solsbury Hill" from his first album after leaving Genesis. Also, Biko is a great song with great meaning. If you do want to see him, don't miss the current tour. His last tour was more than a decade before. So no guarantees you'll get another chance. Also, the stagecraft looks spectacular.

Ok my friend I have seen Peter 7 times since 1983. I recommend you watch the US Tour Live film. It well worth it. In turns of seeing Peter live I can only describe it in one way, it is a religious experience. Honestly it is. I have seen more artists than I can remember and NOBODY and I mean NOBODY does concerts like him. Absolutely no one. He is presently touring on the I/O tour. This will most likely be hist last tour and probably album. It's been 20 years since the last studio album Up, Of note the three studio albums starting at so make the sentence, So Us Up. That is why you get emotional, because Peter reaches into a part of the human experience that most of us are afraid to do. Go and see him and then you will understand.
Hi Mr Salvo and nice to see how you have dived to in some cases of the most underestimated genres of rock or pop or what ever... Personally Peter Gabriels peak was at the album IV aka non titled, but between fans called the 'Jungle Album' about 1982-1983 is a masterpiece of music. The 'Genesis' jo9urney will be a long task if take it, but I give you a one stand suggestion in between: 'Moby: Lift Me Up' and then you will at least feel what I felt when I was quite young:)
The lyrics stand alone. Peter G. could just stand there and sing. It would still be powerful. And that lady screaming takes away from it, in my opinion. I wonder if Peter G feels he can’t stand alone and be as impactful as I know he can. The original music and lyrics are enough: Love, ‘Whichever way I go I come back to the place you are. In your eyes I see the doorway - (in your eyes) of a thousand churches. In your eyes The resolution - (In your eyes) of all the fruitless searches. He's getting older here, and can no longer deliver that crack between octaves in his voice - somewhat depending on recorded enhancements in this performance. His stuff from the '80s is very cool and I'll suggest the official music videos for BIG TIME, STEAM, SHOCK THE MONKEY, and the Award Winning SLEDGEHAMMER - he was such a master of that new medium. My favorite Peter Gabriel song. Special mention to BIKO. I prefer the more 'intimate' studio version
For a visual. I like the movie version video... Always gets me... 😭
@@nightHawk66 I meant that I prefer the studio version of my favorite: In your eyes. My 'special mention' was for Biko and yes, I always watch the movie version.
