    BIOGRAPHY OF PETER GABRIEL:
Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and activist. He rose to fame as the original lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis.[1] After leaving Genesis in 1975, he launched a successful solo career with "Solsbury Hill" as his first single. His fifth studio album, So (1986), is his best-selling release and is certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the US. The album's most successful single, "Sledgehammer", won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and, according to a report in 2011, it was MTV's most played music video of all time.
Gabriel has been a champion of world music for much of his career. He co-founded the WOMAD festival in 1982. He has continued to focus on producing and promoting world music through his Real World Records label. He has pioneered digital distribution methods for music, co-founding OD2, one of the first online music download services.[4] Gabriel has also been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts. In 1980, he released the anti-apartheid single "Biko".[3] He has participated in several human-rights benefit concerts, including Amnesty International's Human Rights Now! tour in 1988, and co-founded the Witness human rights organisation in 1992.[3] Gabriel developed The Elders with Richard Branson, which was launched by Nelson Mandela in 2007.[5]
Gabriel has won three Brit Awards - winning Best British Male in 1987,[6] six Grammy Awards,[7] thirteen MTV Video Music Awards, the first Pioneer Award at the BT Digital Music Awards,[8] the Q magazine Lifetime Achievement,[9] the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Polar Music Prize. He was made a BMI Icon at the 57th annual BMI London Awards for his "influence on generations of music makers".[12] In recognition of his many years of human rights activism, he received the Man of Peace award from the Nobel Peace Prize laureates in 2006, and Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2008. AllMusic has described Gabriel as "one of rock's most ambitious, innovative musicians, as well as one of its most political".[15] He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010,[16] and as a solo artist in 2014. In March 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of South Australia in recognition of his achievements in music.
    Early life
Peter Brian Gabriel was born on 13 February 1950 in Chobham, Surrey, England, son of Ralph Parton Gabriel (1912-2012) and Edith Irene, daughter of Colonel Edward Allen, chairman of the Civil Service Department Store on the Strand, London. Gabriel's father was an electrical engineer and dairy farm-owner from a long-established family of London timber importers and merchants, and his mother was from a musical family. Gabriel was raised at Deep Pool Farm, Coxhill, a Victorian manor just outside Chobham.[18] His great-great-great-uncle, Sir Thomas Gabriel, 1st Baronet, was Lord Mayor of London from 1866 to 1877. Gabriel attended Cable House, a private primary school in Woking, Surrey, followed by St Andrews Preparatory School for Boys in Horsell, Surrey. During his time at the latter, his teachers noticed his singing talent, but he opted for piano lessons from his mother and developed an interest in drumming. At age 10, he purchased a floor tom-tom.
Gabriel remarked of his early influences, "Hymns played quite a large part. They were the closest I came to soul music before I discovered soul music. There are certain hymns that you can scream your lungs out on, and I used to love that. It was great when you used to get the old shivers down the back."[21] At age 12, Gabriel wrote his first song, "Sammy the Slug". Around this time, an aunt gave him money for professional singing lessons, but he used it to buy the Beatles' debut studio album Please Please Me (1963).[20] In September 1963, he started at Charterhouse, a public school in Godalming, Surrey.[22] There, he was a drummer and vocalist for his first band: the trad jazz outfit the Milords (or M'Lords). This was followed by a holiday band called the Spoken Word.[23]
In 1965, Gabriel formed Garden Wall with school friends Tony Banks on piano and Chris Stewart on drums. Banks had started at Charterhouse at the same time as Gabriel; the two were uninterested in school activities but bonded over music and started to write songs. At a final concert before they broke up, Gabriel, dressed in a kaftan and beads, showered the audience with petals he had picked from neighbouring gardens.[22]

Love your reaction. Mr. Gabriel was one of the first to help introduce 'world music' to world-wide popularity. He started as a drummer so he appreciates the African and Caribbean rhythms.

The voice you love belongs to Peter Gabriel. He began his career with a band, Genesis, who's music was so tremendous, so ground-breaking in its time (the early 1970's) that a new name had to be given to it. The name is "progressive rock", a genre which was quite popular back then, with bands like Yes and Genesis filling stadium for their concerts and selling out huge indoor arenas for several nights in a row. The music of Genesis has well stood the test of time and is being discovered today by young people like yourself. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis to go solo, it was front page news throughout England.
This particular song was re-imagined by Peter when he was in his world music phase and given lots of African music touches and rhythms. The young lady wearing the clingy black dress and combat boots is Paula Cole, a solo artist who joinedPeter's band for this one tour. She has a fine voice, doesn't she? Another noteworthy performer is bassist Tony Levin, who is considered to be one of he most talented and innovative bass players in the progressive rock universe.
You need to learn about Genesis. Start with "The Firth of Fifth" ruclips.net/video/rcoHiBYBUvs/видео.html, then give a listen to "Cinema Show" ruclips.net/video/rkp0-EmiDOg/видео.html
Genesis has two eras, one with Peter Gabriel on vocals, and a later, more mainstream pop version of the band, with Phil Collins on vocals.

Here's another iconic Peter Gabriel song but it deserves an explanation:
Years ago Peter Gabriel got divorced when his daughter Melanie was just a child. Being so young she was hurt and confused at the situation that she had no control over, so she turned it into anger and stopped talking to her father. Peter wrote the song COME TALK TO ME for her, to explain that it had nothing to do with her and that he misses her and loves her. Years later, after she had made amends with her father, she also became a singer. She joins him live onstage to sing COME TALK TO ME, it's very emotional when you know the backstory: ruclips.net/video/4J1gWMLbV70/видео.html

While we're on a Peter Gabriel theme, here's another one from the same concert as IN YOUR EYES. This is SHAKING THE TREE, about women's emancipation, specifically in Africa but meant for women around the world. The song was written by Peter Gabriel and Youssou N'Dour, a Senegalese singer.

You are such a delight!! Your joy is so infectious!! Thank you so much for this reaction video. This performance of this song in one of my favorite things in the entire world. So much love, hope, beauty, and connection. Seamless. Perfection. You are right: otherworldly!!
The entire Secret World concert is worth seeing and listening to. I recommend Come Talk to Me, Washing of The Water, and Shaking the Tree.
Peter is really dynamic in all of his music videos and live performances. Most of the musicians and vocalists here have recorded and toured with him for decades so when we see Peter perform, yes, we really are seeing a band, even though his name is the one we hear.
I recommend Signal to Noise, the live performance with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
And Downside Up, performed with his daughter, Melanie during the Us Tour.

Thank you for reacting to Peter Gabriel. I've been a fan for decades, because I enjoy his wit, his spirit, and his mission, and his talent. I've seen him four times (once with Genesis when he came out for an encore), and I plan to see him again this September with my daughter. I think you will be very touched by his anti-Apartheid anthem, "Biko." I also recommend "Solsbury Hill" which is my personal theme song.

If you liked the African influences in this song, you would probably also like Paul Simon's "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes". He includes many Africans in the performance and the dance moves and vocals they do add a very lively feel to the song.

I have to laugh at American Blacks that call themselves African American...I watch their reactions to this song and 99 percent of the blacks have no clue what the music and drums are, most just don't have a clue it's African influence. It takes real Africans to know their own culture, not an American born race that pretends it's African American.. They were not born in Africa and Neither was their parents or grandparents. Elon Musk is a true African American as you are.. Love that you recognize African drums and DRESS right from the get go... Great reaction.

This performance more than any other I know melds the talents from so many disparate parts of the world - and the results speak for themselves. It's a spiritual experience, and a metaphor for what the world can achieve when we look beyond our own shores and experiences. I'd like to give credit particularly to Manu Katche, whose drum rhythms inbue this performance with immense drive and energy, but of course to Peter Gabriel for his vision and selflessness in letting all the performers shine.
