The entire band were virtuoso musicians and Steve Walsh had one of the best voices in all of rock music. He is right up there with the greatest of the greats.

Steve Walsh was so impressive in his heyday, the man could hit notes that others could only hit with falsetto. Always under rated but clearly in the top tier of rock vocalists.

While the song Portrait is about Einstein for many, I am of the opinion that it's about Leonardo Da Vinci. He is depicted on the cover of the Leftoverture album. A great deal of modern life's art, science, engineering, mathematics, etc are based on his work. Kansas is one of the best examples of the principle that art, in its highest form, reflects life. Great reaction.

Amazing hearing it live not many groups side just like listening to their albums live way better quality then listening on the old albums and 8-tracks.. They just don't even come close to music from the 70's call me bias but it is what it is.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
    I still have this LP./Album.
"Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other awesome songs from that era 45 years ago.
They're still played on classic rock radio.
    "Surely Heaven waits for you"😇😇😇😇😇😇😇

Back in the 70's there was a late night weekend program called Don Kirchners Rock Concert. That's the first place I saw them and man were they incredible. When I finally saw them live, a Canadian band called Mahogany Rush was their opening act. You should check them out too as they were fantastic. The song description you read was news to me. I always thought Portrait was a Jesus song as Kerry Livgren was geared in the ecclesiastical direction. Learn something new every day even at my age! Good job Laurie.

According to Kerry Livgren, a lot of people thought Portarit was about Jesus Christ but it was really about Albert Einstein, except he says that it could also apply to a number of historical figures that had an extraordinary measure of charisma and vision. Years later after Kerry had become a Christian, he rerecorded the song as "Portait 2" and made the lyrics specifcally about Jesus.

OMG, my sister, friend and I seen Kansas (heard them on the radio) in concert on Halloween night at the Knoxville Civic Colloseium. I was 17 and had seen Rush ACDC, just to name a couple. Sorry Rush fans, but this particular event was the greatest I've ever seen. As I said before, this was Halloween, because of that the venue was only about half full. The band members were all dressed in costumes..I remember the lead singer was dressed like a woman and I think the bass player was dressed in mechanics coveralls with a woman's nude colored hosiery over his head and face. (I kept thinking that he must be burning up). I can't remember what the other's were. But anyway, these guys were cutting up and having a ball. Needless to say so was the whole place. Best rock concert I will ever witness in my lifetime.

You’re reactions were fun how you react to good musicianship! You’re so surprised! 😲 They could really play precise pieces almost like they were classically trained! They are that good! I’m glad you seem to like them.

Kansas' talent was so great and so diverse that COWS overshadows everything but in my book was not the best song they did. Yes David Pickford who comments below, Song for America probably the one I like best and one of the first I heard along with Down' the Road. Way before Kerry wrote COWS. I don't know anything about the song "Portrait", but I do know a fair bit about Albert Einstein and none of it is good. Despite Einstein wrote over a dozen diaries only one was ever translated from German into English published by Princeton University and it would make you blush reading his thoughts he had about Europeans as he travelled through eastern Europe because he considered himself to be above everyone else and he was literally a racist and a bigot. Einstein left his first wife penniless with 2 kids and despite she was just as competent as a mathematician as he was and her name does appear on early drafts of Einstein's Theory of Relativity, yet she never got any recognition. After he left his wife he started making advances towards his wife's cousin and when she spurned his advances he started doing the same to her 2 underaged daughters. These are written about in his letters to his first wife after he left her.
In fact Einstein stole the work of many physicists that he never gave credit for, including his Theory of Relativity in which he stole the work of no less than 3 other physicists which he once again never gave any credit to. When asked by a reporter what the secret of his success was he replied "to never reveal your sources", which follows he stole the work of many. Remember that famous equation he's known for? E=mc2? He stole that from a French physicist by the name of Henri Poincare who had that written down in his own work many years before Einstein ever mentioned it. Einstein stole a lot of work from Poincare. I learned a lot more than I'm giving you here and you can be assured that the powers that be have hidden most of it throughout his lifetime. I think you can still buy a copy of Einstein diary on Amazon if people feel inclined to doubt my words. Most people will never do any serious research on most subjects like this and they'd rather believe what the MSMedia tells them about Einstein.
