I was in the Navy back in the late 80’s deployed to Keflavik Iceland. Kansas were doing a USO tour and performing at military bases. I was a member of a combat aircrew and happened to be on call the night of their concert so my entire crew were dressed in full flight gear. Their PR girl asked us if we would like to go on stage with the band and sing a couple of songs with them! So, I was actually on stage with Kansas in November of 1989 in an aircraft hangar singing Wayward Son. It was absolutely amazing and something I’ll never forget. They were shaking the hangar doors and sounded phenomenal ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've seen them live in their earlier days and they are master musicians and were once the top grossing live act around in their heyday. They are a very influential band and should be in RRHOF. Leftoverture is a stellar album.

Kansas. Often overlooked but a huge impact in progressive rock. Live they were seamless.
Amazing song. Amazing band. "The Wall" is very insperational if you concentrate on the lyrics. What a time to be a teenager!
This song gets a lot of love and fame but the whole album is absolutely incredible. Stacked with bangers. The Wall, What's on my mind, Miracles out of nowhere, Magnum Opus...probably one of the most consistent albums ever in terms of quality

I saw them on the "Point Of Know Return" Tour. Steve Walsh doing handstands on the keyboards, Kerry Livgren standing still mid stage, just shredding the guitar, locked in.
The entire band working at 100%, one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
I went to see them on the same tour with Dave Mason as the opener in Connecticut. In fact, they were my first live concert and they were incredible!
The Livgren family had a cabin at the Ozarks next to my grandparents. They had fun rockaroake nights :)

I saw Kansas in early '75 with Queen as the headliner. Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush opened the show. All were excellent.
This and Dust in the Wind were staples of my life when I was in grade school. Two amazing songs by Kansas.
Mid 70s high school music, it never stopped. If it wasn't one great band it was another just putting out killer hits. Man did we ever rock out.
Many late 60's and 70's rock bands used organ-styled synthesizers to accentuate their music. Uriah Heep, Yes, Rush, Kansas, ELO, and Styx to name just a very few bands. That organ sound is a key sound that reminds me of that Era. Some of the greatest music ever created.
Add Jon Lord, Stevie Winwood and Goldie McJohn.

The fans that listened to Kansas' albums knew they were progressive. The people who just heard the singles thought they were arena rock.
Proto-Kaw is a progressive rock band, but essentially Kansas. It's quite good!
Not necessarily true. In my case, I just plain old LOVED the music. Of course, back in the day, we didn't really care or really know about what "genre" music was. If it sounded great, we dug it.............case closed.
Only seen them once when I was in high school. Monolith tour, I think. Major influence for drums for me.
Right On, we were not nearly as much about labels or genres, it just had to sound good. Plenty of that back then.
Americas best prog act.
This band has a huge catalog of great songs that you needed to be a fan and own the albums to know. Those who only know the songs that got played on the radio are missing out or might mislead someone. For instance their hit song “Dust In The Wind” while radio friendly doesn’t sound like anything else they did and doesn’t even feature the full band. Steve Walsh’s vocals are some of the best in rock history and yet Robbie Steinhardt also sings some songs and also has a fantastic voice. The two harmonize together extremely well. The bass guitar (Dave Hope) and drums (Phil Ehart) are two of the best in rock as well.
This album is a masterpiece

This song was brought in by the guitar player at the end of the recording sessions because they needed another song. Out of nowhere. Needless to say the band's minds were blown.

As a fan of Genesis, Floyd and Yes when this song came out I’m not sure I classified it as progressive per se, but certainly inspired and influenced by that genre. I recall loving this song (and still do).
This was their big breakthrough hit after years of trying.
So many hooks in one song. The record company told them that the album needed one more song so Kerry went home and wrote this. Brilliant!

So many of these classic rock songs have been remixed especially in hip hop, commercials, and TV show theme songs. A lot of younger folks have no idea where some of this great music came from. I wish there was even close to the level of talent and commitment to great music today that existed back in the 60s and 70s

That "Leftoverture" album has always held a spot in my top 10 "stranded on a deserted island" records.
The whole album is well done, and the lyrics are all very introspective.
Lol lol. Well I'm proud of the fact they are from Kansas and they were older but they lived not 30 minutes from me. And in college my older roommate from Topeka actually had some of their hand-me-down band equipment in his totally dominating audiophile stereo system, and he knew them in some capacity or the other.
If it helps any, those words that you're using like Progressive Rock versus hard rock, yeah those genres were just starting to develop some terminology at the time, but most of us as kids that loved this stuff and were witnessing this huge explosion, the attempt to categorize it never even remotely occurred to us.
It was just freaking awesome music, and they were incredible in concert, and they were on the radio all the time too.
You guys have to see this one live. Steve Walsh lead singer on the keys is a wild man!

I live between Kansas City and Topeka. As a teenager we saw Kansas several times before they broke out. Their concerts were amazing every time!

In their documentary they told how they needed one more song for the album and the next morning Kerry Livgren had written this song which broke the band nationally

To me, the ultimate dose of Kansas' prog/rock blend is a two-part song called Mysteries and Mayhem/The Pinnacle - blistering rock combined with some of the proggiest material they ever recorded. It was originally planned as a single track, but their record company made them split it.
You guys would totally appreciate seeing a live version of this song. The singers play instruments, several actually and you really get to see how talented this group of musicians are. Always love your reactions. Keep on doin you 🙌
If you want violins in an arrangement, listen to their ‘77 hit DUST IN THE WIND. It’s a beautiful song, masterfully done.

Kansas is phenomenal! Do yourselves a favor. Go to their first album and play the first two tracks in tandem. 'Can I Tell You' ' followed by 'Bringing It Back'. These two songs really showcase their raw grit . The violinist. is amazing and adds so much to their unique sound.
You need to see them perform this live - mindblowing! Love you guys!

I think people are desperate for music that sounds different. That's why Ren, a 33 yr old UK self made, no label rapper/rocker/poet/producer/vocalist doing 9 minute songs/performance videos like plays got the #1 album in the UK last month. Nobody's heard stuff like he's making. He films many of his videos live, even live vocals on many. They're one shot, no cuts and no autotune, you can hear his voice! And he plays actual instruemtns, guitar/piano etc. Talks about real stuff, his Lyme disease was misdaignosed for yrs, left him bedbound & mentally ill from wrong meds & he talks about it while stil kicking ass & sounding great. Even young people realize they want different sounding, more authentic music when they hear it and realize what they've been missing. Bring on the organ!
I was a Kansas freak in middle school and high school. I've easily heard this hundreds of times, especially since it's their most well-known song. They have too many great tunes to mention.

In order to get a record company to listen to them, they held a free beer promotion to get people to come. They got signed the same day.
This album blew us away! I think progressive for sure. Who else played a chain driven gong or glockenspiel? I’ve said it before but I only wish you both could be transported back in time to experience all the groups you have reacted to…damn what a bunch of evenings we could have had! Cheers, guys!😊

During the recording of this album (which was their "do or die" moment after an ultimatum from the record company) the band felt they needed one more "radio friendly" song. So, Kerry Livgren, their lead guitarist and main songwriter, went home and wrote this tune, brought it in to the studio the very next day and asked the band "What do you think of this one?" The rest, as they say, is history.
Should checkout Debut Album. The build to the LP’s final track, Death of Mother Nature (Suite) is remarkable. Cover art is the mural of abolitionist John Brown that resides in the Kansas State Capital Building.

I loved hearing Kansas songs when they came on the radio, but I could totally live without it when that era of music ended. I have never looked for or selected a Kansas song on Spotify, Pandora, RUclips etc. (until just now). I watchednto the end but nothing about this music wlexcites me today. Not one of my friends ever puts a Kansas song up on their Facebook page.
The first time I saw KANSAS was in Milwaukee in 1974 when they were the opening act for Hawkwind.
Never really followed Hawkwind after that, (although now at 66 I am rediscovering them) but I have loved Kansas for 50 years. Actually I just saw them in Milwaukee a few months ago on their 50th Anniversary Tour.
🎻RIP Robbie🎻, but the new violinist, Joe Deninzon, is doing you proud ❤ We're fortunate that the band loves Milwaukee and comes here often.
You should check out the classic soul jazz organists from the '60's like Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff and Jack McDuff. They had a definite influence on the rock era I think.
Man, they played this all the time in the rock clubs when it first came out and years after.
In this version of the 70’s we see a violin…..and a lot of other things too! Flirting with progressive while rocking out- that’s kinda what I heard then and now. On paper the piano / violin combination reads like classical music, then we get these vocals too?! ❤️🎶❤️
The live official video is incredible as you get to see who’s playing all those riffs. The lead singer is also on congas and organ! They were our great Prog Rock band- our Yes.

I saw them live with a few Army Buddies in 1980 in Salina Kansas, we camped out over night to be in first we were in front of the stage! They Killed it great band!

I have had the extreme good fortune to have seen KANSAS Live 4 times. Phil Ehart is my Favorite Drummer. He plays melodies not just rhythm patterns. Every member is a musical GENIUS. This song is usually extra long and a crowd favorite to close their shows. Steve Walsh is Keyboards and a great vocalist. Robby plays Violin like NOBODY else. Kerry on Guitar is phenomenal along with Rich and Dave….AWESOME performance every time.

Nothing moves the air like the rotating speakers of a Leslie amp/cabinet for a Hammond Organ. There's all kinds of digital reproduction thingy's but they don't move the air like that. Kansas. Allman Bros. Chicago. Boston. Traffic. Pink Floyd. So many more, but you guys called it, once again. Great reaction!
Very talented group, excellent musicians, not ever one of my favorite groups, but their skill cannot be denied.
Arguably, along with Styx, the best American Prog rock bands of the golden era of rock & roll. Leftoverture is a brilliant album.

Don Kirshner was funding Kansas, but previous albums didn't provide the financial return he wanted. He told them he needed a hit to continue. The album was almost complete...they needed one more song to fill it out. Carry On My Wayward Son was written in one night by the guitarist. It wasn't supposed to be the hot single...but it ended up being their masterpiece and became a huge hit for them and a financial relief for the record execs.
I don't think we considered Kansas as progressive back then. I felt they were like Styx with a little Boston and just a touch of Van Halen. Carry On reminds me of Don't Look Back by Boston and Come Sail Away by Styx. But what do I know! But its all great!
All sounds great to me. I’ve just seen a few comments in our previous Kansas videos that say they were American Prog. Sounds like the groups you mentioned above to me as well but like you said, it just sounds great so it really doesn’t matter.
Ya, back then we were still trying to figure out what progressive was. Some people didn't think Pink Floyd and Rush were progressive because they got too much "airply" (LOL) on the radio. And, music wasn't as available as it is today so unless you bought the albums you didn't realize what the deeper cuts were. You just knew about the hits. The radio was such a huge part of our lives back then. It's all we knew.@@AirplayBeats

They came up with this song after the album was wrapped and the were doing load out of the studio and Kerry came in and said listen to this! I just came up with this last night after the last session! The pulled stuff back in, and cut the the biggest track of the career

Hello Gentlemen, I'm new to your channel and really enjoyed this reaction to one of my favorite songs. You mentioned a lyric that sounded familiar -- "tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean." I'm wondering if you're recognizing Ephesians 4:14. The meaning is completely different from the song, but the wording paints a similar picture. Very nice reaction -- carry on! 🙂

What sets Kansas apart is their main writer, Kerry; their leader singer, Steve; and their violinist.
It's a retelling of Jesus parable The Prodigal Son. "Carry on my wayward son. There'll be peace when you are done" (father watches his son go wayward, but foresees he will comeback and be forgiven). "Lay your weary head to rest, don't you cry no more" (son returns to forgiveness and redemption).
Kerry is a spiritual man.
