Went to a STYX/KANSAS concert, with the thrill of seeing STYX. I left in awe of KANSAS and how fantastic they are live....holy crap!! STEVE WALSH never stopped from the time they started....to the very end......INCREDIBLE!!😱❤❤
Kansas came out of Topeka, Kansas. They were the third iteration of a band named Kansas - all the others got left behind. Look for music from Proto-Kaw, a band Livgren formed in the late 90s early 2000s - they were the guys from the second iteration of Kansas who got left behind. He managed to put most of them back together and they were fantastic. Unfortunately they had problems - Dan Wright went into rehab, and Kerry Livgren suffered a massive stroke - but they still managed to put out four amazing CDs. The guy with the moustache playing the organ and providing vocal leads was Steve Walsh, arguably the BEST male vocalist of his time. The guy with "the hair" was Robby Steinhart, who also did vocals and provided violin in the group. The front guitarist is Kerry Livgren, who also played keys. He did a bulk of their writing during their heyday. He still runs a music studio in Berryton, KS just south of Topeka.

It’s the album that put them on the map. I saw them twice before this album, in July 1975 on the Song for America tour, and on February 22, 1976 on the Masque tour (at Villanova University). Saw them on this tour, at the Tower Theatre, on 12-30-1976. Saw them at the Allentown State Fairgrounds on 8-5-1977 and one final time on the Point of Know Return tour at the Spectrum on 12-16-1977. Steve Walsh is one of the greatest vocalists in rock, and I was a big fan of the drummer, Phil Ehart. Robbie Steinhart on violin and vocals, and the genius behind the band, who wrote most of their songs, played guitar and keyboards, Kerry Livgren. Great live band. If you get a chance, check out the live version of “The Pinnacle” from Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.” Steve walsh on the keyboards and vocals is at the top of his game.
Obviously Prolific Musicians They were considered one of the most "TECHNICALLY" Talented bands of the time....Beloved by many...I saw them in 1983......Wonderful performance......Steve Walsh's lead vocals, and piano is just amazing

New sub, old hippie from the 70s here. I was about ur age when this came out, some great memories. They were a garage band that everyone fell in love with and now span decades with great music. Much like many bands from the 70s. Back then we didnt have cable, internet, social media, cell phones, etc. If u wanted to follow ur fav bands u had to literally follow them. So we lived for live concerts or live performances Saturday nights with Midnight Special, Soul Train, etc. Thanx so much, nothing rocked like the 70s. Take care, Peace

Kerry Livgren wrote this song *in a night.* He almost didn't pitch it to his band mates because they were finished with the album. The drummer says that he remembers he was breaking down his drum set when Kerry said, 'hey guys, I eh, have another song.' They said that when they got the record back from production and they listened to the intro to this song, they knew they'd done something special. This song rocketed them to fame. They were professional musicians long before they did this song but basically nobody knew them. AFTER this song, _everybody_ knew them.
I love these guys. This song is a Timeless Classic!! Robby Steinhardt had the most Awesomest hair. I'm sure tons of girls wanted to run their fingers through it. Lol. Robby Steinhardt was a great vocalist and played violin, viola, tamborine. Sadly, we lost Robby in 2021. RIP Robby.

The guy on the tamborine usually plays violin but since there's no violin in this song... My favorite song when I was 16 years old. Spectacular.. I didn't know the lead singer played 2 instruments. Very talented band. I'm nearly 64. We didn't have internet or technology..so I didn't know until this day lead singer played 2 instruments. Still loving this song . nearly 47 years old. Your right the song never goes out of style. In fact one of my roommates in college when I first got there had some of Kansas' hand-me-down band equipment Incorporated into his massive stereo system in our room, lol. They have so much great stuff. Mid-to-late 70s prog rock.

You would realize what gem, that "LEFT OVERTURE" Album was, and is in my mind. Yes they are from Kansas. I listen to this song every time I see a new reaction, and a smile is brought to everyone who experienced this magnificent Masterpiece.

All I can say is if I had to chose just one American album to be my absolute favorite this would be it no question: Leftoverture, starting with this truly iconic song, the rest of the songs are perfect integration of violin by the singer - facial hair Rob Steinhardt with rock music which makes the whole album awesome!

The band you're listening to is called Kansas, but many call it Kansas III (for a good reason). Two of the key members of the band, Don Montre and Kevin Livgren, were originally in a band from Topeka, KS called Reasons Why. They left that band and joined with Lynn Meredith and Dan Wright to form a band called Saratoga. They then changed their name to Kansas (Kansas I) and added some local talent from a rival Topeka band called White Clover, Phil Ehart on drums, and Dave Hope on bass. This iteration of Kansas didn't last long, with Ehart, Hope and others deciding to take off and reform White Clover. Kansas I, meanwhile, replaced Ehart with Zeke Lowe, and Hope by Don Mikinski. This group was known as Kansas II by many, and eventually folded. Meanwhile, White Clover under Ehart and Hope, added Steve Walsh, Rich Williams, Robby Steinhardt, and others (including members of Kansas II), and eventually got a record contract, changing their name to Kansas (Kansas III), which is the band most know as Kansas...😏

Kansas were from Kansas, sometimes considered a Christian Rock Band. They were America's answer to Britain's YES AND ELP. They were a Progressive Rock Band. They were from the farm country, nonone was ever going to discover them. Someone got word to some record execs in New York and they decided to go to Kansas. The band thought if they come out here in see these little rinky dink crowds they play for they would leave. So the band rented a hall the night the execs came into town, they charge everybody like 25 cent to get in with free beer......they packed the hall, the record execs were impressed and signed them thinking they were quite popular, most of the people at the hall were there for the free beer!

Miracles Out Of Nowhere is one of the best rock band documentaries. I highly recommend it for an insight into how a band was discovered and the creative processes behind the evolution to major success. They were literally a band traveling around west Kansas in a bus.
One of prog rocks top bands, but often forgotten. Saw them live in their prime. A then unknown Cheap Trick opened up for them . An amazing concert! The facial hair guy is Robbie Steinhardt, now passed (RIP) Brilliant harmonies and a mean violist. Im an identical twin too btw!

yes, they are from Topeka, Kansas; I saw the Kansas documentary: Miracles out of nowhere, it mentioned that when Kansas and Aerosmith were both established bands were in the '70s Kansas opened for Aerosmith and that jerk Stephen Tyler just couldn't handle that the audience enjoyed Kansas perhaps more than Aerosmith, so Tyler decided to sabotage their performance by unplugging the power cords from Kansas's mixer, amplifiers by the way, British band Queen whom I had a privileges' to see live in Budapest year 1986, so they were personal friends with Kansas God Bless you friendly twins!
I was a transplant to Topeka Kansas ie Topeka West '73. They had been playing up and down i-70 as white clover. I watched them play in an amphitheatre next to the gym and in the school auditorium. Robby steinhardt was classically trained but was the bedrock iconic sound this group had. They were a blend of Manhattan, Topeka and Lawrence based musicians. Kerry livgren was the main prolific songwriter/guitarist/keyboard player. There are some documentaries worth watching. Steve Walsh in his day was equivalent to Steve Perry and journey. If you watch any live footage Steve was a master of the Hammond B3 organ and piano.... Sometimes at the same time. If you really want to get a feel for their development start from their first album and listen through.(point of interest the cover of the first album was taken on a mound, Burnett's mound, directly south few hundred yards south of where we lived in Topeka). Their albums told a story as the songs progressed. Their album,as with other artists, are something to dive into as you listen to the music. There's a song off their first the struck a chord in me and 74 as it does today's political climate. Can I tell you. There's strong instrumentation throughout their albums is so tight. Their drummer is underrated. Enjoy traveling through their discography.

Being born in the 60s I luckily got to grow up with it all. So lucky!!! I think it's obvious that most music today is objectively way worse, lol (yes, I'm biased, but it's true, lolo)

KANSAS, "CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON". The 1976 monster hit, that 47 years later is probably one of the most iconic songs ever performed. Actually if you would take the time to listen to the whole album. You would realize what gem, that "LEFT OVERTURE" Album was, and is in my mind. Yes they are from Kansas. I listen to this song every time I see a new reaction, and a smile is brought to everyone who experienced this magnificent Masterpiece.

Kansas was great. Epic. Along with Styx, Foriegner, The Moody Blues and Boston. They sold out arenas all over the country.
All I can say is if I had to chose just one American album to be my absolute favorite this would be it no question: Leftoverture, starting with this truly iconic song, the rest of the songs are perfect integration of violin by the singer - facial hair Rob Steinhardt with rock music which makes the whole album awesome!
I absolutely could not choose a favorite album, or even a favorite song. Every single time I think, "Yeah, this is my favorite (song or album)" I'll hear another from my youth and think, "Yeah, this is my favorite..." rinse repeat.

@@OGSontar, it's not something that you absolutely have to decide not as important as say the occupation, skill you decide or who you 're gonna marry to, want a kid or not. it's just a thing that I've found that American album so valuable for my tastes that I can easily say this is my favorite, BTW I'm a true Pink Floyd fan, but my #1 favorite song of all is Telegraph Road by Dire Straits from the Alchemy live album., when I was a schoolboy in Hungary I was crazy for a British band: Sweet. enjoy your music:zocsy!
The band you're listening to is called Kansas, but many call it Kansas III (for a good reason). Two of the key members of the band, Don Montre and Kevin Livgren, were originally in a band from Topeka, KS called Reasons Why.
They left that band and joined with Lynn Meredith and Dan Wright to form a band called Saratoga.
They then changed their name to Kansas (Kansas I) and added some local talent from a rival Topeka band called White Clover, Phil Ehart on drums, and Dave Hope on bass.
This iteration of Kansas didn't last long, with Ehart, Hope and others deciding to take off and reform White Clover.
Kansas I, meanwhile, replaced Ehart with Zeke Lowe, and Hope by Don Mikinski. This group was known as Kansas II by many, and eventually folded.
Meanwhile, White Clover under Ehart and Hope, added Steve Walsh, Rich Williams, Robby Steinhardt, and others (including members of Kansas II), and eventually got a record contract, changing their name to Kansas (Kansas III), which is the band most know as Kansas...😏

The song reminds me of the Netflix series Supernatural, it is used a few times...Supernatural has an EPIC Musical soundtrack...I bet you guys would love that series. 2 brothers fighting supernatural evil.
Kansas were from Kansas, sometimes considered a Christian Rock Band. They were America's answer to Britain's YES AND ELP. They were a Progressive Rock Band. They were from the farm country, nonone was ever going to discover them. Someone got word to some record execs in New York and they decided to go to Kansas. The band thought if they come out here in see these little rinky dink crowds they play for they would leave. So the band rented a hall the night the execs came into town, they charge everybody like 25 cent to get in with free beer......they packed the hall, the record execs were impressed and signed them thinking they were quite popular, most of the people at the hall were there for the free beer!
They are from Topeka Ks. I'm from Hays Ks. They used to play here often in the 70s... They Got their BIG BREAK in Ellinwood Ks at The Town Hall building one night...The Big New York Call...

Miracles Out Of Nowhere is one of the best rock band documentaries. I highly recommend it for an insight into how a band was discovered and the creative processes behind the evolution to major success. They were literally a band traveling around west Kansas in a bus.
There are some good covers of this one. Anthrax did it around 2016 and an all female band called Rachel Rachel did it around 1991.
When they were recording this album they needed one more song and Kerry Livgren wrote this by the next day !

One of prog rocks top bands, but often forgotten. Saw them live in their prime. A then unknown Cheap Trick opened up for them . An amazing concert! The facial hair guy is Robbie Steinhardt, now passed (RIP) Brilliant harmonies and a mean violist. Im an identical twin too btw!
If this really is your first Kansas keep going. They have many great tunes. And don't forget to check out Styx, and Boston. And that only scratches the surface of 70s and 80s music.
yes, they are from Topeka, Kansas; I saw the Kansas documentary: Miracles out of nowhere, it mentioned that when Kansas and Aerosmith were both established bands were in the '70s Kansas opened for Aerosmith and that jerk Stephen Tyler just couldn't handle that the audience enjoyed Kansas perhaps more than Aerosmith, so Tyler decided to sabotage their performance by unplugging the power cords from Kansas's mixer, amplifiers by the way, British band Queen whom I had a privileges' to see live in Budapest year 1986, so they were personal friends with Kansas God Bless you friendly twins!

I didn't hear this song until Dean started playing his dad's old cassette tapes on Supernatural. This song became the theme song for that show.

I was a transplant to Topeka Kansas ie Topeka West '73. They had been playing up and down i-70 as white clover. I watched them play in an amphitheatre next to the gym and in the school auditorium. Robby steinhardt was classically trained but was the bedrock iconic sound this group had. They were a blend of Manhattan, Topeka and Lawrence based musicians. Kerry livgren was the main prolific songwriter/guitarist/keyboard player. There are some documentaries worth watching. Steve Walsh in his day was equivalent to Steve Perry and journey. If you watch any live footage Steve was a master of the Hammond B3 organ and piano.... Sometimes at the same time. If you really want to get a feel for their development start from their first album and listen through.(point of interest the cover of the first album was taken on a mound, Burnett's mound, directly south few hundred yards south of where we lived in Topeka). Their albums told a story as the songs progressed. Their album,as with other artists, are something to dive into as you listen to the music. There's a song off their first the struck a chord in me and 74 as it does today's political climate. Can I tell you. There's strong instrumentation throughout their albums is so tight. Their drummer is underrated. Enjoy traveling through their discography.
