Kansas was overly criticized by "the critics" (what else is new) for being too commercial. They were good musicians, who wrote very nice palatable tunes. If it were easy, everyone would do it.

This song was created as a finger picking exercise by Kerry Livgren (the longer haired blonde guy). His wife Vicky heard him playing it and encouraged him to make it into a song. He brought it to the studio as they were completing the Point of Know Return album, and the rest of the band said 'yes' and recorded this. It became their highest charted song.
While Kerry is now a devout Christian, this song was written when he was still searching and exploring spiritual writings from many cultures. This one references some native American ideals.

This is a perfect example of how rock isn’t all sex and drugs. There’s mastery of musicianship and instrumentation beyond electric guitars and beautifully crafted and expressed intellectual concepts that entire generations of very young people could grasp and love. This song may be atypical in some sense, but in the ways that matter most it shows just exactly what they’re made of deep down inside. You’re going to want to listen to Carry On Wayward Son, Point Of No Return and The Wanted Man. Much love ❤️

I saw them live in concert earlier this year as part of their 50th Anniversary tour. They were amazing! My favorite song of theirs is probably “The Wall.”

Drummer Phil Ehart and guitarist Rich Williams (on the right) are the only two original members still in the band. They are currently on their 50th anniversary tour and STILL sound phenomenal!

Robby Steinhardt, (RIP, he died in July, 2021,) while a spectacular violinist, also had an amazing voice that harmonized perfectly with vocalist/keyboardist Steve Walsh. Shortly before he got ill and later died, Robby recorded a terrific solo album, "Not In Kansas Anymore / A Prog Opera," and while there were plans for a tour, it never came about. The album was released several months after his death. The members of Kansas were high school buddies, and there were several "versions" of Kansas before they recorded their first album. Kery Livgren (the blond guitarist,) isn't just a great guitarist, but an extremely talented keyboardist as well, because that allowed Kansas to switch back and forth between 2 guitar and 2 keyboards, within individual songs. Kansas was a pretty big band around the mid-west until they recorded the album "Leftoverture" with the incredible hit, "Carry On Wayward Sun" (which you've probably heard, without knowing it was Kansas.) Kansas toured as the opening act with Queen when Queen was at the top of their game, and by the time "Dust in the Wind" came out on their following album, "The Point of Know Return," Kansas became one of the biggest groups in the world, headlining stadium shows across the world. I noticed that you recently reviewed a song by Aerosmith, and there's a hilarious story from the Kansas documentary movie, "Miracles Out of Nowhere," where there were problems when Kansas was the opening act for an Aerosmith show in Kansas. If you listen to a few more songs by Kansas, be sure to check out the documentary!

From ashes to ashes, dust to dust. In live in Kansas, 1/2 hour drive to downtown Kansas City, and it's a quality place to live. Young people move away but most come back to raise their families. As you might have heard, we also have a pretty good football team. Two days until Super Bowl XVIII, we're pretty stoked. A huge sports town, known for great BBQ and steaks, home of the WWI monument and the Negro Baseball League museum. Colorful past with a progressive future.

I'll start by saying ,I can't believe you've never heard this song.🤪 This is one of their more mellow songs.. They are my favorite band. I've seen them 6 times , Twice front row & will be seeing their 50th anniversary show in November.🤗 The band has incredible song writing a lot rooted in christian faith. And they are all incredible musicians..🎶🎙🎸🎹🎻🥁🎶 Carry on wayward son is their most popular song..👍 But they have loads of incredible songs.. Enjoy your future journey into Kansas🤗

Kansas had a bit of a resergence in the 2000's thanks to their hit Carry on My Wayward Son which is the unofficial theme for the TV Series Supernatural, they even opened for the show's Comic Con pannel a while back. As for Dust in the Wind it served as Highlander: The Series' version of the film's Who wants to Live Forever and is where I first heard the song.

An American treasure. They are equal parts rock, prog, and symphonic. They were killing it in the 70s. Kind of lost their way untill recently. If you want to see superb musicianship in action... go see them.

This great song is about the relativeness of our existence. We are nothing compared to time and space. We like to think we are important and the crown of creation, but in reality we are no big deal.

This is probably my favorite Kansas song, however, "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Point Of No Return" were their biggest sellers during the 70's, they changed their sound in the 80's, particularly with a seriously underrated song in 1980 "Hold On", you should check out "Kansas - Hold On (with lyrics)" Powerful song and lyrics. Even if you don't do a reaction video, you should still check it out, you won't regret it. Anyway, loved the review, love you guys, take care and stay safe ❤️

Born and raised in Kansas and got to see them in the early 70s in college so yeah...progressive rock and talented group of guys. They are still performing today with more members. We are only a speck in the grand scheme of the universe...but we still matter. And they are from Kansas. And of course, Kansas is known for being windy too.

Just as Chicago is from Chicago. But the boys in Kansas were from about 30 minutes from me, and in fact when I was a freshman at college, my roommate, who was a senior, was from Topeka Kansas, and he actually knew those guys because he himself was a musician. And in fact he was majoring in music and he had this incredible killer stereo system, and it Incorporated some of Kansas' hand-me-down band equipment. It was loud, lol.
Saw them live in concert back in the late seventies a couple times and they're just an amazing band. You've got to check out more of their catalog; they had a ton of hits.
Carry On Wayward Son is probably the one you're most likely to have heard in passing, and Point of No Return is another banger and a great saga.

Not only was Kerry Livgren usually the lead singer, although several members of the band were amazing vocalists, but sometimes he would perform just standing in front of the mic at the front of the stage and then right next to him he had a piano with another vocal mic above it, and then if he pivoted the other way he had a percussion set-up, and he would just effortlessly move between them in the middle of even a hard banging song.
Robby Steinhardt would sometimes play the violin, and sometimes he would concentrate on backing vocals but always be playing a tambourine or something like that, and he was really good at getting the crowd hyped up.
Another fantastic song by them which was a big hit He Knew, and it's written to where it could be about just about anything and it would be cool, and it's easy to think it might be talking about Jesus, but in fact it's actually written about Leonardo da Vinci!

I was at a Christian coffee house in the early-mid ‘70 featuring Phil Keaggy who lived in Kansas City Mo. at the time and during the intermission he brought to the “stage” a couple of young men who he introduced as his church’s house band and themselves as “Kansas “…
