In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm going into the Daily Doug vault for Dust in the Wind by Kansas. I recently reacted to the entire Point of Know Return album, and this acoustic gem on side 2 (of course) stood out. It's one of their most cherished songs, and I'm pleased to release my reaction here on RUclips. The entire reaction can be viewed at my Patreon site!

This whole Kansas album is a masterpiece.
Yes it is. As good as any prog album ever released.
one of my favorite rock album
Leftoverture is by far their finest album!
This is truly one of those songs that becomes of much more meaning, the older you get.
so true, and that i can tell you 33 here, and this song everytime i listen with each year that passes i feel it even more.
"And all your money, won't another minute buy "....phenomenal
Walsh's vocals are so good. Dude has some pipes.
The irony being this song is Timeless and Immortal!
Sot on.
I just lost my dad earlier this week. Kansas was his all time favorite band. Very fitting time for you to post this video. Thank you for reacting to a very important band to me and my family. RIP Dad
You mentioned the commercial success of this song, and guessed that it was Kansas's most successful. It's actually second to "Carry On Wayward Son" -- at least according to wikipedia. Carry On was certified quadruple platinum in 2019, while Dust was "only" triple platinum in the same year.
Thanks. I also thought Carry On was bigger.
Dust in the Wind was bigger. Carry On didn't crack the top ten and wasn't certified Gold until 1990, whereas Dust was certified Gold shortly after becoming a top five hit.
@@bookhouseboy280, and then came Supernatural.
@@wolfgangwalk337I only knew Kansas from the Supernatural theme. Only recently did I do a deep dive and find out how great they were. Even “Carry On” is great when it isn’t cut into a 30 second theme song.
Being a teenager in the '70's, of course Kansas was a must have for any rocker...I got to see them a couple times, each time was magical, years, many years later, I become friends with the manager of a local Wendy's, I was in radio at the time, and he was highly intelligent when it came to classic rock, et al...one day he told me that he grew up in Kansas, after I told him I was stationed in Fort Riley, he then proceeded to tell me that he was classmates with the guys in Kansas, in fact, he was asked to stop by the garage after school with his sax, to see how it sounded with a song they were working on, mind you, this was while they were still in high school...and of course the rest is music history. Rock ON!!!
It's these pieces... That are true masterpieces... that truly refresh us after hearing them again after a break from it. Hackneyed... manufactured and cheap songs don't do the same. We overhear them and we get tired and we never like them again. This piece is much different. It's magnificent.
I love how in the string section, the violin lines seem to be answering each other parts, like in a dialog, in agreement but still in tension
I had always like this song and even meant a lot to me and my gf because of a very special vacation. But then my older brother passed away and then this song was played during his wake, and now every time I hear it I think of my brother and how much I miss him. Best song ever written... God bless you bro....
Great song. You should do Kansas' "The Pinnacle" from their album Masque. It's an absolute masterpiece.
I love that song!
The pinnacle in tandem with mysteries and mayhem. Well it should be the way around actually 😂
@@luisarreaza4502 Agreed
absolute masterpiece!
@luisarreaza4502 can we throw Icarus into the mix too?
I heard Kerry Livgren say in an interview that Dust in the Wind is not really a Kansas song. People would come to their shows dressed in tuxedos expecting the entire show to be similar to the one song they’d heard and were shocked by the rest of the concert.
An all-time classic that even hard classic rockers love and respect.
The interesting thing about the finger picking exercise is that it utilizes the 2nd, 4th, and 5th strings of the guitar, where two of the three fingers stay anchored while the third moves through three different positions (one for each measure) over a 4 measure loop. And this causes a 3 measures against 4 measures polyrhythm, where the loop repeats after 3 measures even though the song is in 4/4. So, if I'm correct, there are 16 chord changes of 3 chords over 4/4 before the loop reconciles. Of course, halfway through the full loop, it changes from C to Am.
So it's:
C | Cmaj7 | Cadd9 | C |
Asus2 | Asus4 | Am | Asus2 |
Cadd9 | C | Cmaj7 | Cadd9 |
Am | Asus2 | Asus4 | Am |
So that high note progression is just C,B,D over a three divided equally as a four.
I find the outro a little more interesting cause there it truly is 3 chords rotating in the 4/4 timing - Am , Asus2 , Asus4 .
Always loved the way Steve and Robby harmonize.
Been a while. A great selection for Kansas is "The Pinnacle." It's a great song. The intro is complex and beautiful..
These lyrics meant nothing to me at 25. At 55, they're gospel and bring me to tears.
IMO the band's greatest album. Way back in the day when it was first released I saw an intriguing review and the superb cover art, bought the album and it was my first introduction to Kansas. I quickly acquired the band's back catalogue.
Have to say this is my favorite Kansas song. I love the violins in this song.
I am not that familiar with Kansas to pick a favorite. What is the best album to start exploring their catalogue?
@@wernermoritz882 go listen to song for america 🤔
@@wernermoritz882 I'm not super familiar with Kansas but I like the albums Leftoverture and Point of Know Return.
Masterpiece
Go back to the beginning.
Journey from Mariabronn is amazing from the first album.
And for a heavy hitting rock and roll song, Devil Game.
Dust. Wind. Dude
Great talent on display in verse 2, when Steve starts out in unison double tracked, then breaks out into the harmony vocal. Sure, this song is sometimes joked about as being lightweight, but I find it really heartfelt and certainly unique with the violin.
That's violinist Robby Steinhardt on the harmony and background vocals. His vocal contributions to the band really took them to another level.
@@Jimsta128 Like Doug said, we've heard that song 1000 times. I'll have to listen closer!
@@philf4086 There are many Kansas songs that showcase Robby both on vocals and violin. If you haven't already, you should hear Miracles Out of Nowhere and Down the Road. Miracles Out of Nowhere is a great song to hear Robby's vocals both in the lead spot and in that lower harmony as he shares the lead vocals with Steve Walsh. And Down the Road is a crazy fun song with Robby on the lead vocal and some fiery violin chops as well.
Always great reaction video Dr Doug! Going to see them tonight as The Keswick!!!
Great song from a great band.
One of my all time favorite tunes especially to sing along too!
Timeless, beautiful song.
"Bill And Ted's Great Adventure" LOL
Dust, wind…dude.
**** Kerry Livgren is a great writer and musician. Steve Walsh had a wonderful voice, especially when he was young. Robbie Steinhardt (RIP) was a great violinist.
I really don't know anything about the musical structures and architecture in musical vernacular but It's so interesting to listen to you. Somehow I can relate to what is being said with all your wisdom like I can feel it it my bones but unable to articulate.. You're the best man🌿🌿You have some great reactions; 'I know you didn't forget about 'Carry on my Wayward Son', right?
Such an interesting story behind the song, because when they were recording the previous album Leftoverture, Kerry had been churning out song after song for that project, as Steve Walsh had expressed that he was having a bit of writer's block at the time. Not only had they finishing rehearsing that album, but recording it when Kerry walked in and said, "Hey guys, I think I've got one more." He then walked them through one that he had written over the previous night or two. That song was "Carry On, Wayward Son." Upon hearing it, the band expressed that this track would indeed be a game changer for them and it was.
The moral of the story is, never rule out the late comer to the game.
Carry on, is brilliant. One of them songs you newer really know where it will take you (musically)
Doug, thanks for doing this song and the POKR album!
Beautiful music.... And thanks for telling, time-to-time, what is the theoretical name of the magic goodness that we hear. Not that it matters, but we get kicks for knowing that this-and-this is a known thing.
Kansas is such a complete group. Steve Walsh is the icing on the cake.
I love the vocal harmonies in this song.
This song always makes me cry. My dad asked for this and Carry On Wayward Son to be played at his funeral. he wanted some others but he knew my mother would stonewall us kids so said if nothing else get those two. So I held my ground on it. My brother and sister backed me up as they remembered him saying it several times but also I was so adament. I was so close to my dad. But hearing those songs now always bring tears to ours eyes. And they were always favorites (still are but now have that memory). Plus Carry On Wayward Son always reminds me of watching Supernatural every week with my dad until I moved out and then he would call me the next day to see if I watched it and discuss it.
Socrates in Bill and Ted's explains beautifully dust, wind...dudes
Many singers have covered and will do this song, so brilliant and great masterpiece.
I learned to play this song on guitar as a fingerstyle picking exercise, variations on C and Am. It diverges slightly into D and G, then right back to the root chords. Fun to play, good exercise.
Simply love this song!
A perfect piece of music.
makes me sad and happy at the same time
Yep, I agree! This song is one of the best
Saying goodbye to my matriarchal aunt today, so your timing on this one is pretty perfect and resonates a bit more for me today.
The fingerpicking technique he uses here is a variation of Travis picking. He was learning that technique and wrote this song as an exercise in learning it. It's a common pattern that's used a lot in country and folk music. When the Beatles were in Rishikesh Donovan taught John Lennon that technique and John immediately used it in writing 'Julia' and 'Dear Prudence' (that uses a slight variation). I learned it by learning how to play 'Julia' after I'd been playng for well over 20 years, back in the late 90's. Not too long after I learned it I decided to write a song using it, though mine is just an instrumental. Something tells me this is a common thing with guitarists who also write songs and who learn this technique. I saw a Kansas documentary maybe ten years ago where Livgren talked about doing that, so it was kind of funny to hear that he'd done the same thing I'd done - though a bit more 'successfully' :) In that doc he also talked about writing 'Carry On Wayward Son'. If I remember right, they were almost done recording the album but needed one more song. He went home knowing they needed a song, and he wrote that song rather quickly, with all the different parts just coming out. That's some serious talent.
This song came out when I was in junior high….still gives me chills.
Another bonfire favorite! Sitting around with our guitars howling at the moon! Stancing in the moonlight! Barefoot girls dancing in the moonlight! Just too good for us mere mortals.
Point of Know Return is the best album cover PERIOD.
As Doug's U of Kansas doctorate degree hangs behind him!
All of the Kansas album are great 👍
Lovely lovely song.
An all time American music masterpiece... Kansas are phenomenal...
"All The World", "Hopelessly Human", "Angels Have Fallen", some of their greatest masterpieces.
So increbile Track ....
Saw them live last year. Still a great band even with some personnel changes.
Another great song off that album is Portrait (He Knew).Would love to hear you react to that. THANKS!
Doug reacted to this entire album on his Patreon.
Two words...He knew.
If you were to play Dust in the Wind back to back every time it's been played since it came out it would go on continuously for 22 years
Carry on My Wayward Song is also well known.
Would love to see your reaction to the similitude of a dream on RUclips one of these days.
This was the first song whose lyrics I translated to Hungarian to be singable along although I wouldn't say it's my favourite song by them (I have too many favourites to name one).
In my opinion Kansas has the best prog band from the USA.
Excellent as always! However, you have not properly given Kansas their due until you react to Miracles out of Nowhere. Take it from another guy with a music degree (points at self) it is A) an outstanding song B) lyrically deep C) containing an outstanding example of.... well... you'll see. Trust me on this Good Sir!
This one my husband and I's first dance song ❤
I'd absolutely love to see Doug do a video on "Fool's Overture" by Supertramp.
Episode 261.
@@Arrow2theACL hey, thanks
Notice the University of Kansas diploma in the background... : )
Doug, one of my Kansas favorites is Icarus Borne of Wings of Steel. Check that one out
Love this song, but (just me) would have preferred any other song off the album for this reaction. My fault for being cheap! 😂
My favs for this album would prolly be Nobody's Home, The Spider and Lightnings Hand.
🤘🧙♂️🤘
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
My wife loves this song.
Always loved this song, and the whole album :)
But you have to dig into "Carry On Wayward Son". You might say you have newer heard it, until you hear it ... :D (do the official video, its "live"..
Doug, what do you think makes the song have such a staying power all these years, the music or the message? Just curious of your opinion.
This is a great fingerpicking exercise. Trickier than you might think, to play it correctly. May miss a note while playing it.
To these English ears Kansas from the 7Os always sounded more European than American, ostensibly due to their intelligent lyrics and accomplished, virtuoso musicianship (I offer no apology for any perceived insult).Their run of six albums, beginning with their eponymous offering and ending with Monolith is one of the most impressive of any 7Os band. Incidentally, I always felt that Reasons To Be from Monolith was the companion piece to Dust in the Wind, possessing a similar vibe in its general acoustic arrangement.
"and all your money won't another minute buy"
RIP ROBBIE
Doug, when most people hear the name Carl Orff - O’fortuna they don’t realize they have heard parts of it in so many commercials , movies and shows. Drawing from your background ever think of giving it a introducing it to the masses and breaking it down? What is your thoughts on the piece?
Kerry Livgren solo album seed of change 1979 81 just a woody deep uplifting rock that may become yr personal anthem😊🎉🎉🎉❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
My dad was not a fan of rock music soft or hard. However, he loved this song. I think it harkens to our
Catholic religion.. At nearly every Catholic funeral, it is recited, "ashes to ashes, dust to dust." I am a 70's teen, therefore, I too loved the album...
How about doing a reaction to “Carry On My Wayward Son”.
Dust. Wind. Dude.
Highlander the series!
You should try Theater of Salvation song from Edguy!
I was wondering if you ever had a full reaction to leftoverture?
I would say their biggest hit is Carry on my Wayward Son
Come back to Leprous! At The Bottom or On Hold i think you would dog
I think its still true today. This song is the only song to achieve #1 on the Billboard Top 10 Pop Chart that did NOT contain a drum track.
I used to listen to Kansas when I was a wee lad (only 20 years ago really), but I recently listened to a bunch of their stuff. I think personally masque is probably up there as my fav. The pinnacle is a great song, not to mentioned Icarus, but we all know the 1977 live version is the better one. It’s got a great mix of different styles while still retaining a prog sound. Not as out there as point of know return or leftovertures with its sometimes sporadic structure in their songs, but just really an overall great album IMO.
Looks a bit suspect to me.
Here's a suggestion Mike oldfields ommadawn
Did doug ever react to Camel - Lady Fantasy ?
Good song back in the day but can't listen to it now without thinking of Bill and Ted meeting Socrates, Dude.
Your my boy blue.
Still waiting on OSI Radiologue
This is the first "fingerstyle" song i ever learned 🤔
Kansas N° 1
Pls checkout the David Foster Asia Tour in the Philippines that he ask SB19 to sing All By Myself...
Nobody’s home. That’s the song on this album Doug needs to review. That violin solo needs to be analyzed.
It's on Doug's Patreon
A small theory of this album is that the album may talk about the cold war, but I'm not very sure about it.
dive into Kansas Journey from Mariabronn
It needs more banjo and accordion on it, as well as a faster tempo.
Just kidding 😂😂😂
As a young man I was frightened by this song.
As an old man I find this song comforting in a way.
Don't be frightened by death.
Live your life to the fullest!
@Doug_Helvering.- I'm only kidding with that statement.
I'm 58 years old now.
I view getting old as a blessing and a testimony of my life.
I can't believe I've still survived all these years.
I find some comfort in this song in that getting old and ultimate death as natural part of life.
With little time left on this planet, it's important to live the beauty of this miracle of life to the fullest you can.
