Hope you all had an awesome New Years guys! Was time for some KANSAS! What’s the next track we should check out by them?! I think we’ve both heard Carry on my Wayward Son before but maybe we could do a ‘Review’ for that one? Either way let us know whatcha want!! 🔥🤟🏻
Andy & Alex I’ve never felt compelled to suggest a song for you guys but you absolutely need to check out “No One Together” by them. It is one of the most musically complex songs you will ever hear and it will have you absolutely LOST in the sauce. I first heard this song before I knew anything about Kansas and the transitions and chord progressions absolutely blew me away. It’s a Bohemian Rhapsody type song in that way. To add to the music, the lyrical content will have you thinking. Please, you have to check out No One Together. I’ll go back to not commenting now😂👍🏼
Andy & Alex one of the best tracks ever written and performed in my mind. Smooth and cerebrally beautiful. Portrait(He Knew) and Lightnings Hand are awesome songs from this album. A great catalog of work.
YES .... A rock in the cosmos they say ... 😂 ... Let them hit their 50s and they'll realize that all they are is truly dust in the wind ... To dust we came from and to dust we shall return .... It's not about what we've built .... It's about us .... It runs much deeper .... Kansas summed it up perfectly
To me, Carry on Wayward Son is THE perfect song. But for sure Kansas may have the best one, two punch with these two songs, which are so very different.
Kerry Livgren was just doing finger exercises in his living room on his acoustic guitar and his wife said, "That's beautiful, you should make a song out of that." That is literally how this song was born.
+Jeff Cobb And it almost didn't make it on to "Point Of Know Return". They needed one more track to fill out the album but couldn't come up with a tune they thought would work. Finally Kerry reluctantly played this for the others; it was unlike any other Kansas song they'd recorded...and it became their biggest hit.
Another part of the story: When Livgren paid it for the rest of the group there was dead silence when he finished. One of them said, "That's our next single." It was their first single to break the top 10 in the US.
Kansas did for electric violin what Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson did for flute ;) Edit to add: there’s a reason why us Boomers keep hyping groups like Boston, Journey, & Kansas. We know good music. It shaped us. And we miss those days. So, thx for bringing those days back, & for helping us remember how we felt listening for the first time 👍
I'm a Gen-X'er and I grew up with the early 70's music (and the 80's). What an excellent time for music! I remember listening to the first Boston album when it came out and discovering groups like Styx and KISS as they were first coming out!
irishgrl: What do Boston, Journey, and Kansas all have in common? They were all signed to CBS Records......Boston on Epic, a Columbia Records subsidiary, Journey on Columbia proper, and Kansas on Don Kirshner's Kirshner boutique label, also distributed by CBS Records! Win a bar bet with that one!
I'll say one thing, you guys are getting the very best out of your college education. Your analysis is spot on and quite mature for your ages. Keep it up guys, you restore my faith in the future. Signed: Some Old Guy!
This is not only my favorite Kansas song but, one of my all time favorite songs ever. Yes, it's a very deep song and the guys of Kansas deciding to keep the music soft, easy, and not just accompany the lyrics but, also to enhance but, not drown out the beautiful lyrics and message they carry.
Agree “Song for America”. You do hear those old blues guy, especially Willie Dixon - Led Zeppelin and others do their songs! “You Shook Me”, “ Lemon Song”, “I can’t Quit You Baby”, “Since I’ve been loving You”, etc. ultimateclassicrock.com/top-led-zeppelin-blues-songs/
Totally agree! I had every one of their albums, but I think Leftoverature is second. I would put Point of Know Return first. It was the third album, I believe, and to my ear it was more mature musically. Indeed, you could listen for hours and barely scratch the surface of their genius.
You should listen to some Jackson Browne. Running on Empty and Doctor My Eyes recently popped up on my phone and I had forgotten how great those songs were.
"In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return." Gensis 3:19
Also Ecclesiastes 3:20 " All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to the dust." The writer is a Born Again Christian(Kerry Livgren-the guitar player for Kansas at the time) and used those verses for his inspiration for the song.God Bless ye!
Kansas is another band that my brother introduced me to. I'd recommend listening to "The Point of Know Return" next. Great video, guys! I'd loved to see Alex's mom playing Dust in the Wind. Happy New Year! Oh! And Blind Lemon Johnson was popular in the 1920s but bands were liberating his and Howlin' Wolf's riffs in the 70s. Led Zeppelin got into a bit of trouble for that. I myself have a soft spot for St. Louis Jimmy.
As others already said, "Point Of No Return". Their catalogue is peppered with great lyrics and musicianship. I recommend that song next, though there's plenty of "sauce" to discover.
Without the singing, this is just a gorgeous mix of flamenco and classic lines. As in just gorgeous! The electric violin over the acoustic guitar in the center of the song is AWESOME!
Here's why I love you guys: There's another music reaction channel I'd check out from time to time, and while I found some of them interesting, they always seem more interested in analyzing the song critically than just simply drinking it in emotionally FIRST then getting into the other aspects. With you guys - while sometimes yes, I can see your brains working certain things out, for the most part you simply sit back and let the music work it's magic on you...you're FEELING it, not THINKING it, if that makes sense. Next Kansas song: The Point Of Know Return
I love how they react emotionally to the music, and I wish they'd spend more time talking about that, as well as about the meaning of the lyrics and the music. The soul of it.
"Portrait (He Knew)" could be my favorite Kansas song. "Song For America" is also great. Kansas was really a great album band, so those early albums are really a great listen from start to finish.
I always cringe when Dust In the Wind is someone's early exposure to Kansas. This band is incredible. Once you really dive into their catalog they will blow your mind. Most of their radio songs are just that but the deep cuts, shit they are good
Kansas !! Hell Yeah !! - This was probably the best first Kansas song you could have featured (my favorite song by Kansas). Lyrics are phenomenal - the guitar picking - the vocals, the harmonizing and the violin - just carry you away... Thanks for this !! Great Reaction !!!
Magic Power, Fight The Good Fight, Hold On. Now Triumph was a criminally underrated band, for sure. Saw em live in 84.....flawless and for a 3-piece band? Incredible.
Beautiful song. Unfortunately, I've heard it so many times that it has lost the impact on me that it once had. My favorite part, without a doubt, is when the violin comes in to play the "lead". Especially when it climbs the scale and then back down again. Truly a timeless classic.
Such a moving poignant song....whew... Last year in highschool, teacher put graduating class school photos up at the last assembly. Not formal photos, just around he school- and set it to this music. It choked us all up. Kids we went to school with since kindergarten were literally leaving the assembly and scattering to follow their dreams. In 1989 you lost track of almost everyone. Phone rates were high for long distance. No one had a phone like today. No social media. You might run in to a friend of a friend to ask about where someone is now or maybe a parent if home for the weekend- maybe the schoolmate they were back for a holiday. Most I have never seen again. We would write real letters to schoolmates if we had their addresses! Now you all can keep up so easily! So it was an ending and our time had come to part. Song caught the feeling. Didn’t realize it till then. Great choice in song. Have you done Eric Clapton’s Layla yet? The original would suit you down to the ground. It is great. But honestly I liked his acoustics Unplugged version even more. But you will rock out with the original. It has a beauty if it’s own.
Great reaction guys. I felt the same way when it first came out. Few songs can immediately capture the attention musically and lyrically like this one. Point of Know Return really rocks and the vocals by Kansas are always top notch. Carry on Wayward sons!
Beautiful song. Humbling lyrics that puts one in a pensive mood. On another note concerning your Lynyrd Skynyrd reaction the other day; I relistened to a lot of the recommendations, including my own, and I think the next one you guys should do is That Smell. It has all the components you guys like, lyrics, guitar tone, lost in the sauce stuff. I really think you would like it better than the others although anything by them is great. Happy New Year!
From their documentary "Miracles out of Nowhere", Dust in the Wind had been a finger exercise for the lead guitarist, that on the night before the last day of recording the album, became a song just to finish the album.
It's so fun to see young people introduced and enjoy what I had the privilege of growing up with. Every song told a story and they had real instruments.
You guys should hear Song For America, or The Wall, or Silhouettes In Disguise or Portrait (He Knew). Or a bunch of any other ones by Kansas. Their first 6 albums you cannot go wrong with.
Born & raised in Kansas. Before they were famous, they were the premiere band who played for our proms, formals & college dances! So I heard them & met them many times for free! When the record label attended a nightclub to hear them, they used their last dollar to buy beer 🍻 for all! All the drunks were cheering & dancing when the record reps showed up! 😂 The rest is history. One of the main singers now sings in the Jay Sekulow Band with the lead Singers from Christian rock band, Petra, & one other band member from the 80s. Great music 🎶!
This tune was huge and deservedly so. Steve Walsh, the lead singer has said he never tires of singing this tune. Also, the entire album is a masterpiece. I love listening to you both. I have 2 sons, both a few years older than you guys and they love classic rock also. I've seen their reactions to songs like this the first time I played them for them so watching you guys is like re-living those moments ago and I thank you guys for that! Oh and I love the way you guys talk about your parents!
So great to see guys your age enjoying and appreciating music from my generation. I've played music (and continue to play) for the past 43 years and won't stop until they pry my guitar from my cold dead hands!
PLEASE, check out "Portrait" (He Knew). Yes, that is the title, it incorporates the entire arsenal of Kansas' instruments, vocals, and lyrics into a progressive rock masterpiece.
Kansas was wrapping up recording Point of No Return which was the follow-up to their breakout album Leftoverture. Kerry Livgren was in his home playing his guitar and his wife suggested he do something with the finger picking he was doing. He claimed it was just an "exercise" and not a song. He played the song over the phone to another band member and then went into the studio the next day to record. After hearing playback everyone was stunned. They asked Kerri where "that" had come from and he just said...no big deal...it was a guitar picking exercise and they released it to become a number one song around the world and one of the great songs of that decade. Inspiration at the 11th hour of recording and a rock masterpiece for the ages.
I appreciate the level of attention and respect you give to the music you review --- the quality of your reviews is top notch ... and it's just a joy to watch hyou discover some of these gems!
It blows my mind that someone hasn't heard this song. I've never owned a Kansas album but adore this song like almost everyone else. I've heard it well over a thousand times in my life just by conservative estimate. It truly is a timeless classic. Glad you were finally baptized into it. The message is a tad cliche but no less profound.
I remember going to my grandparents' house in NYC on a dreary gray rainy day and hearing this on the radio when it came out. Looking out the window I felt tears in my eyes.
I've always thought that, too! I think Christian themes just sort of coincidentally crept into their songs, because they never confirm it; although, Kerry Livgren journeyed thru a rather public post-Kansas transformation of faith that delivered him to Christianity.
Kerry was a searcher and he was reading a book on Native American philosophy when he wrote this ..there is also Socratic as well as De Carte present in the lyrics ...he ultimately settled in to Christianity .
@@andyball8379 not post, during. happened on the Monolith tour in 79, and it's what drove both Steve Walsh and Robbie Steinhardt out of the band in the early 80's. Monolith is based on themes from the book of Urantia, while much of the earlier stuff is his spiritual searching through Buddhism and numerous others.
Since you've already heard Wayward Son, that leaves 2 that I hope you'll review and think you'll love. Magnum Opus, which I think is their greatest work and Song for America, which is a masterpiece in it's own right.
Stunned when I first heard this song and couldn't move. Music helped us get through all the death of war and assassinations. Musicians gave us hope and we're guides in our life.
A&A - This is pure poetry. 10. Everything beyond gorgeous. Reflective to the nth degree. You're on a roll. Not to be too maudlin, but this is my "ash scattering song" I've picked for when I "move on". Fact of life fellas. -- On that cheery note. I hope you two had a fantastic New Year's Eve. Here's to a Wild 2020. Set the goals. Have a great day! :)
That is one of the only albums I can listen to all of the songs on. Everything on it is gold. *edit* Not to seem like a broken record, but 'Closet Chronicles' is one my fav Kansas songs. Another is 'Spider/Portrait'. Those two go together like Bostons 'Foreplay/Longtime'.
You guys are scratching the commercial surface of Kansas. I really suggest diving further in. Do "Miracles out of Nowhere" next. Then "Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel", "The Wall", "Mysteries & Mayhem" & "The Pinnacle". Assuming you like all of those (you will, you're musically intelligent), I will recommend more. Dive in, dive in dive in!
One of my favorite songs from my childhood as well. I started listening to this just before I began learning to play music and takes me right back to that time! Excellent reaction and thank you for letting me relive those memories.
This is definitely not typical Kansas. Early Kansas is definitely Program Rock. Song For America, The Wall, Point Of No Return, Down The Road, What’s On My Mind, He Knew, Sparks Of The Tempest
Happy New Year to you two. Where does the time go? I remember 2019 like it was yesterday. Anyway, kudos to Alex for at least trying to reference Blind Lemon Jefferson (you were close...is he related to Blind Lemon Johnson?) And welcome to Kansas. You guys have some exploring to do if this is only the second Kansas song you've ever heard.

Quite possibly the most perfect song ever recorded. When it was released, it was impossible to avoid. It was such a hit!
To me, Carry on Wayward Son is THE perfect song. But for sure Kansas may have the best one, two punch with these two songs, which are so very different.

IMO, one of the most beautiful ballads of this century.
Except this century began on January 1, 2000. This 1978 song isn't from this century, it isn't even from this millennium.

“Song for America” (Original version) is a prog rock masterpiece. Reminiscent of Yes and Rush.
Agreed
Don't Forget Lonely Street and Journey From Mariabronn!
Agree “Song for America”.
You do hear those old blues guy, especially Willie Dixon - Led Zeppelin and others do their songs! “You Shook Me”, “ Lemon Song”, “I can’t Quit You Baby”, “Since I’ve been loving You”, etc.

Its rock in roll , who came up with this prog, prog is bullshit
Totally YES!
This song actually started as a "picking exercise" by the guy who wrote it. See this band live while you can. They are jaw dropping great!
The catalog for Kansas is so rich and so full you could do weeks on them alone. (15 platinum albums)
“Song for America”, is a masterpiece.
The violin was not added later. The violinist is a major part of the group and it's sound. Kansas always was _the_ rock band with a violinist ....

One of the most under appreciated Kansas numbers: "Miracles Out of Nowhere."

It has all the components you guys like, lyrics, guitar tone, lost in the sauce stuff. I really think you would like it better than the others although anything by them is great. Happy New Year!
Also from Skynyrd try "all I can do is write about it"
this is one of my favorite songs of all time! it makes me cry and feel so many things. it’s such a classic.
From their documentary "Miracles out of Nowhere", Dust in the Wind had been a finger exercise
for the lead guitarist, that on the night before the last day of recording the album, became a song just to finish the album.
Portrait!
Those violins are pure magic in this song.
'What's on my Mind' , 'Portrait (He Knew)' , 'Point of no Return'
What’s on my mind is a banger!
Love What's on My Mind
Born & raised in Kansas. Before they were famous, they were the premiere band who played for our proms, formals & college dances! So I heard them & met them many times for free! When the record label attended a nightclub to hear them, they used their last dollar to buy beer 🍻 for all! All the drunks were cheering & dancing when the record reps showed up! 😂 The rest is history. One of the main singers now sings in the Jay Sekulow Band with the lead Singers from Christian rock band, Petra, & one other band member from the 80s. Great music 🎶!
"Point of Know Return".... song is worth it for the pun alone
Point of No Return is one of my favorites from Kansas
So great to see guys your age enjoying and appreciating music from my generation. I've played music (and continue to play) for the past 43 years and won't stop until they pry my guitar from my cold dead hands!
That Rift was a finger exercise. When Kerry Livgrens wife heard him playing it she said you should make it a song and he did!!!
Beat me to it.
I saw them in the late 70's. The drummer came out from behind his set and did some percussion on a freaking anvil.
We need more Classic Kansas on this and other reaction Channels.
Not so much a cliche to someone 72 years old. It wraps up my past and whatever I have of a future. Peace and Love and Happy Life.
I remember going to my grandparents' house in NYC on a dreary gray rainy day and hearing this on the radio when it came out. Looking out the window I felt tears in my eyes.
"Lightning`s Hand" , "Sparks of the Tempest" off that same album.
Attention Andy & Alex
Kansas will be at
Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall - Sarasota, FL / Jan 28 2022
Having heard most all of their work, I sense a hint of Christian principles running through a fair amount of it.
I believe one of the guy's father was a minister.
Kerry taught a Bible research class in Topeka
The spiritual meaning of this song , can never be as profound...to a human mind and soul. We are dust, to dust.
Portrait: He Knew, Point of no Return, Icarus: Born on Wings of Steel, all of the Leftoverture album
Saw Kansas live in 1978 at the Fabulous Forum - amazing show. They're still touring
Since you've already heard Wayward Son, that leaves 2 that I hope you'll review and think you'll love.
Magnum Opus, which I think is their greatest work and Song for America, which is a masterpiece in it's own right.
Agreed.
Magnum Opus is a definitely a LOST IN THE SAUCE composition. Probably their most intricate prog composition.
Magnum Opus definitely takes you on an interesting journey.
Add to that "Miracles out of Nowhere"
@@jeffcoat1959 there's probably 5 more you could easily add to the list, but those are my 2 favorites : )
My "ash scattering song" is "Sailing" by Rod Stewart.
@@MMFrye Oooh. Nice! Glad to know there's another planner in the group! haha -- Happy New Year, Missy! :)
@@lisaw5604 I don't have children of my own, so I'm leaving things to my nephews. Whether they do what I ask or not is up to them. ;) Happy New Year!
@@MMFrye I'd make it an deal breaking directive (that's just me tho!) lol. -- Thank you!! :))
can't think of a more appropriate use of such a lovely spiritual song. let's hope it's still a long way off. Happy New Years Lisa!!
It's goosebumps time with this song. Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for the personal touch on this one!
Love your reviews!!! You must listen to Kansas “The point of know return”. It’s another great song!!!
I forgot how beautiful this song is Thanks :-) Happy New Year!!!
Kansas is awesome....Really enjoyed this review / reaction. Please take the time to review Carry On Wayward Son. HAPPY NEW YEAR :)
You couldn't get in your car and go two miles till this would come on the radio! WGAD-FM (Gadsden, Alabama!) Memories! TY guys!
Point of No Return. They have MANY good non-famous songs that few have heard.
"Closet Chronicles" - best cut from Point of Know Return, IMO.
One of my favorite songs from my childhood as well. I started listening to this just before I began learning to play music and takes me right back to that time! Excellent reaction and thank you for letting me relive those memories.
Check out “Hold On” from Kansas! One of there best
This is definitely not typical Kansas. Early Kansas is definitely Program Rock. Song For America, The Wall, Point Of No Return, Down The Road, What’s On My Mind, He Knew, Sparks Of The Tempest
Prog Rock
Happy New Year to you two. Where does the time go? I remember 2019 like it was yesterday. Anyway, kudos to Alex for at least trying to reference Blind Lemon Jefferson (you were close...is he related to Blind Lemon Johnson?) And welcome to Kansas. You guys have some exploring to do if this is only the second Kansas song you've ever heard.
This song saw a lot of radio play. Even years later, on classic rock radio. It is timeless and a true standard of rock.
