The Who has always been an enigma to me. In some ways, they were the first punk band ever. But in other ways, they were the best prog rock band ever. I guess they were just The Who!
I’ve heard the punk part before. Always made sense to me. They were punks before punks. I mean c’mon, My Generation. “People try to put us down, just because we get around. The things they do look awful cold, I hope I die before I get old.”
"Eminence Front" is my fav Who tune ~ I saw The Who in Folsom Field in Boulder early 80s. I was loaded, I don't remember a lot - but I do recall dancing to this.
I’m sorry for all who weren’t born in my generation!! Early 80s were the best time for me learning all theses great rock bands!!! Lovin it!!!!! Love u guys!!!!!
Moon died right before this album's release, and he's sitting in that chair on the cover that says Not To Be Taken Away.....tell me there isn't something cosmic about that!
To be fair, that caption was printed on the chair after he passed. A very early photoshop I guess you could say. But still an amazing tribute and final album for him.
One of the best bands ever, each member great in their own right. Daltreys vocals second to none..Keith Moon attacking the drums.. Pete Townsend on guitar and vocals.. awesome..John Entwistle one of the best bassist ever. Arguably the best band ever..Just sayin there is a good argument for them..👍
I don't remember a lot from the time back when this song came out, but I definitely remember my friends and I waiting for this album to drop and tearing it apart for days!! The song is still fire!!
Pete Townsend is a genius for the ages. He's the writer / composer of the who. But then you have the unique, powerful and possessed Moon on drums, followed by the innovator and originator of the rock bass, Thunder Fingers
"Join Together" is a must, "Behind Blue Eyes", "Eminence Front", anything you can check out from the Live Secret Policeman's Ball is so cool too! Earlier work "I Can't Explain" was their first single as The Who, "I Can See For Miles" from 1967. The 1973 Quadrophenia album is amazing, live is the best. Enjoy guys, great choice!!
A true factoid- all of the CSI franchise use different The Who songs as their opening credit songs. The original series used this song, with it being revived this year as CSI:Vegas I suspect we’ll be hearing it again.
This was the last album to feature Keith Moon on drums before he died. Behind Blue Eyes and Love Reign O'er Me are both 10's that you should listen to.
Thats a great double album release, "Live in Toronto". I was at every Toronto WHO concert from 1975 to 2012. That's like 15 concerts tours or specials. (I missed earlier and later ones due to my age or living abroad). Only the first 3 with Keith Moon as drummer.
Watching you guys makes me feel like I'm hearing this song for the first time, again. What a great feeling. I was 20 years old when this song was released in 1978. It blew me away. 🤯

1978, their last album with Keith Moon on the drums. If you want a religious experience of classic Rock music, listen to all of 'Quadrophenia' (1973) - they were hitting their peak.

I heard this on my radio the other day in the car, and I immediately thought of you two, and that I wished you'd listen to this classic piece of art. Cosmically cool. BTW, research Pete Townsend....he is a legit musical genius.
That killer strumming in the first part of the solo is John Entwistle, playing the bass - he was widely considered one of the most skilled bassists of his time.
It’s so weird for me, the music I’ve taken for granted (I knew it was slamming) is getting it’s rightful due all these years later. ROCK And ROLL will never die. It’s true, my heart swells with happiness, very, very loud happiness. Peace, Phil.
Bend your ears their Quadrophenia album. Every one is in full flight through out the entire. Special stand out tracks are the opening song The Real Me and the closer Love rein O're Me . "Love....." has to my ears the ultimate rock screaming and probably my favorite rock closer on an album of time. When I first heard it it I was mesmerized and speechless.
Not only did Kieth Moon play the hell out of the drums, he also sang along and performed a bit of slaptick as well. If you can watch him play it is joyous.
"Behind blue eyes" I think the Who arn't given their due when people talk about greatest bands ever, their music is consistently quality bangers. It is no surprise for me that you have given them three straight tens.
Pretty much anything off of the Royal Scam or Aja albums is awesome. They have some more mainstream hits from earlier in their career, too, like "Do it Again," which is the song that got me into them as a kid.
Mention the irony of the “Not To Be Taken Away” chair Keith is sitting on. It broke my heart in the day...still does. Edit: By the way...the Shepperton video of this song will blow your socks off! Actually “The Kids Are Alright” is a classic.
BEHIND BLUE EYES - This shows how fabulous they are at gentle songs as well.... Roger (the singer) has said that he loved Keith's (the drummer) playing because he played along with what Roger was singing. As for the synthesiser, even the best Moog players, including Keith Emerson, said that only Pete Townsend could really use the instrument to its full capability. So glad you enjoyed the song as they were one of the soundtracks to my teenage years. Believe it or not, they are releasing a brand new Who album in time for Christmas.
If you want to Keith Moon at his peak, than it's "A Quick One" from The Rock and Roll Circus. No one can touch The Who live when they were in their prime. No one.
@pbr streetgang The Who definitely blew The Stones off the stage at the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus gig, but The Stones version of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" at that show is incredible! Mick Jagger at his finest! If you haven't seen it, you should.
Behind blue eyes is a really deep emotional song that obviously was written very carefully. Just please listen. It's about a guy who is frustrated and feels he has to watch what he says and how he acts.
Again, as I commented on the other Who song you played, I saw them as a tripleheader at the Boulder field in the mid 80s. When they sang this song, Roger Daltry was running in place and when they reached a crescendo everyone in the stadium reach the crescendo with them, and were up on our feet and it was such a unifying oneness that we all experienced!

You're both doing a terrific job. I love seeing two young people appreciating the classic rock songs of the past. As far as the Who goes, listen to Love Reign O'er Me...Incredible song, especially Roger Daltrey's voice in that one. Keep up the great work boys.
Well said.
My g-g-g-generation!
Welcome to MY world kiddos! Graduated from high school in 1978. What a GREAT time for music...
"Love Reign O'er Me" has every element of a great song. You won't be disappointed and will be another 10.
Mark Allen you were right they rated it a 10
Moon died right before this album's release, and he's sitting in that chair on the cover that says Not To Be Taken Away.....tell me there isn't something cosmic about that!
apparently he sat that way because of his beer belly, he didnt like it.
To be fair, that caption was printed on the chair after he passed. A very early photoshop I guess you could say. But still an amazing tribute and final album for him.
Us old timers know that Keith was the inspiration for Led Zeppelins name.
Prophetic
One of the best bands ever, each member great in their own right. Daltreys vocals second to none..Keith Moon attacking the drums.. Pete Townsend on guitar and vocals.. awesome..John Entwistle one of the best bassist ever. Arguably the best band ever..Just sayin there is a good argument for them..👍
John … The Best Bassist of All Times…😄😉
I'm a bit jealous watching someone else get to enjoy this song for the first time.
Me too, because you and I won't believe that they'll enjoy as much as we do!!!!! I feel you!!!!!
Isn't that the point here hehe
Same!
I don't remember a lot from the time back when this song came out, but I definitely remember my friends and I waiting for this album to drop and tearing it apart for days!! The song is still fire!!
Matthew Lee Yeah but come on everyone has heard this one on CSI
Pete Townsend is a genius for the ages. He's the writer / composer of the who. But then you have the unique, powerful and possessed Moon on drums, followed by the innovator and originator of the rock bass, Thunder Fingers
My Generation baby
And ofc Meaty with his crazy belts
Not their biggest hit, but the appreciation for this track seems to have risen over the years. It's fantastic.
Being the theme song for CSI had to have helped a lot.
Ten Years After I'd love to change the world. Definitely a ten.
I see you like the One Hit Wonder groups...me too!!!
Absolutely one of my favorite 60s groups
@@yolandajohnson86852 other great songs are Love like a man and the classic go'in home done at Woodstock?
And Love like a man, and these 2 bangers will Love "Going Home" done at Woodstock
@@HenryInHawaii oh okay
I've listened to this 1000's of times, and still find hidden treasures in it. Old or new, you can't beat quality!
The genius of Pete Townshend. Possibly the greatest musicians assembled in one band.
So many great Who songs... "The Real Me" from Quadrophenia will BLOW. YOUR. MINDS.
I love Pete's solo version of 'Drowned.'
I would pick I can see for miles as the banger on the earlier stuff over My Generation.
Love Reign o'er me , Emmenince Front Live from Toronto 1982
Thats a great double album release, "Live in Toronto".
I was at every Toronto WHO concert from 1975 to 2012. That's like 15 concerts tours or specials. (I missed earlier and later ones due to my age or living abroad). Only the first 3 with Keith Moon as drummer.
Watching you guys makes me feel like I'm hearing this song for the first time, again. What a great feeling. I was 20 years old when this song was released in 1978. It blew me away. 🤯
I was born in 78 and have listed to 60s and 70s music all my life but only found the who a couple of years ago and wow their fabulous quadrophenia is probably my favourite album ever.
Such a powerful voice... And the bassist ....john entwhistle..... Arguable besr bassist in rock.
One of the best for sure!!
@@AlexScheibli check this out.......

Pete Townshend, certified musical genius. I love the way he used his guitar as a 'synth'.
1978, their last album with Keith Moon on the drums. If you want a religious experience of classic Rock music, listen to all of 'Quadrophenia' (1973) - they were hitting their peak.
"The Real Me"
"Bargain"
"5: 15"
"Had Enough"
"I Can See For Miles"
"Slip Kid"
"The Quiet One"
"Getting In Tune"
"Join Together"
"Goin' Mobile"
"The Punk & The Godfather"
"Love Reign O'er Me"
"Trick Of The Light"
"Pure & Easy"
"Sister Disco"
"I Can't Explain"
"Long Live Rock"
"The Seeker"
5:15 is just pure mayhem. They would lose their minds.
@@gregcox7477 Agreed!!
Had Enough was actually featured in an episode of WKRP in Cincinnati. Great song
"Baby, Don't You Do It."
@@jayrice5156 That IS a nice cover! (...but that was only released 'cause some dimp decided that, "for the upcoming anniversary reissue, on CD..." ...they needed ...additional unreleased cuts
...
...It's not, really, "a Who song," at all.... (Just sayin'...👍👍)
I heard this on my radio the other day in the car, and I immediately thought of you two, and that I wished you'd listen to this classic piece of art. Cosmically cool. BTW, research Pete Townsend....he is a legit musical genius.
When it comes to music, the Baby Boomers win. And it’s not even close.
Matthew Hetzler too bad you guys fucked up everything else
Jimmy Plank, who do you mean by “you guys”? Are you assuming I am a Baby Boomer?
@@jimmyplank9824 I'm guessing you own either an iPhone or an Android device. You're welcome.
@@osimnod I have both. I'm a boomer. And have shell scripts in production that are older'n him. :D
@@richardsteiner8992 Don't you just shake your head at some of these posters?
Love Reign O’re Me.
Close your eyes, and it will take you on a journey. Another hauntingly beautiful song. Powerful...
BEHIND BLUE EYES!!!
Y'all ought to do "Behind Blue Eyes". It's easily their best song in my opinion, definitely a 10. Or their set from Woodstock is awesome as well.
I totally agree. My favorite Who song.
It's a nice song but you really like it better than Love Reign O'er me? That is a masterpiece.
Yep
The Who is my favorite English band! Won't Get Fooled Again is my favorite and then this!
Bargain from Who’s Next. Amazing. All of Quadrophenia. All of Tommy.
Agreed, Bargain is another 10
tommy is overated but agree about quadrophinia
@@neilpye6089 - Completely agree.
Quadrophenia is a masterpiece. Pete Townshend at his musical and lyrical best
Honorable mention: 5:15.
Not only did Kieth Moon play the hell out of the drums, he also sang along and performed a bit of slaptick as well. If you can watch him play it is joyous.
THE WHO..... LOVE REIGN O'ER ME.. IS TOP TEN SONGS EVER WRITTEN YOU DON'T GET MOVED BY THIS SONG YOU SHOULD HAVE YOURSELF CHECKED!!!!
Only four in the band but such power.Andy and Alex are a scream, good fun.
"Behind blue eyes" I think the Who arn't given their due when people talk about greatest bands ever, their music is consistently quality bangers. It is no surprise for me that you have given them three straight tens.
Would love to see you guys react to some Steely Dan. Some suggestions: Kid Charlemagne, Green Earrings, Peg, Josie, Aja. Keep it UP boys!
Pretty much anything off of the Royal Scam or Aja albums is awesome. They have some more mainstream hits from earlier in their career, too, like "Do it Again," which is the song that got me into them as a kid.
❤️❤️❤️
Agreed!
Yes, Yes, Yes, Charlie Freak, Night By Night, King of the World, Your Gold Teeth
YES, please do Steely Dan. "Kid Charlemagne" is a great first choice, or "Don't Take Me Alive."
Going on four years and still your best ... and most real reaction.
Behind Blue Eyes
Pinball Wizard!! Pinball Wizard!!! And, Pinball Wizard!!!
Your reactions when the vocals drop is priceless!
Love Reign O'er Me.
Mention the irony of the “Not To Be Taken Away” chair Keith is sitting on. It broke my heart in the day...still does.
Edit: By the way...the Shepperton video of this song will blow your socks off! Actually “The Kids Are Alright” is a classic.
So unbelieveably ahead of their time for the 60's. And so unbelieveably fresh today.
Released in 1978, but your overall point is spot-on!
@@gravizfake Thanks for the correction. So much good music from that era it's sometimes had to remember exact dates.
Gentle song, but with savage lyrics.
@@LadyIarConnacht Spot on..
So many great options but I'm confident that Love Reign O'er Me will be an instant 10!
Damn, you two instantly picked up on what makes this song so special. You all are some intelligent listeners.
The Real Me - THE WHO One of the best base lines of all time!
THE WHO is the most attractive live band ever with Moonie and the Ox
Queen is the best band live it's like a fact at this point lmao
Yeah remember that Townshend would WRECK his guitar in live performance!!!
@@eznor5103 Queen can't touch the Who live at their peak.
THANKS AGAIN for not stopping every two minutes in the minute of a transition!
Hey guys Pinball Wizard opens with the fasted strumming ever recorded where all six strings are being strummed. Behind Blue Eyes has killer lyrics.
My Generation next
Andy's face during this song makes me so happy. Great happy facial expressions reacting to the masters, The Who.
the "left mix" section being praised is the bass, the great John Entwistle
Behind blue eyes is a really deep emotional song that obviously was written very carefully. Just please listen. It's about a guy who is frustrated and feels he has to watch what he says and how he acts.
Again, as I commented on the other Who song you played, I saw them as a tripleheader at the Boulder field in the mid 80s. When they sang this song, Roger Daltry was running in place and when they reached a crescendo everyone in the stadium reach the crescendo with them, and were up on our feet and it was such a unifying oneness that we all experienced!
The Real Me next please guys, you won't be disapointed.
Probably the best bass sound on a record ever. Period.
@@zackattack635 I had a favorite until I heard this, I thought that honor went to Frank Zappa's bass run section of the song "Apostrophe"!
John Entwhistles bass makes that song. I could listen to it all day and not get bored.
Agreed. “The Real Me” May be the most powerful song in The Who canon. Do it!
RUclips has an isolated bass track for The Real Me. Incredible.
