It seems that you weren’t aware of the most touching thing about this performance. Yes Heart was phenomenal and the bands reaction was so awesome. But what really makes this video is Jason Bonham, the son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham who died, was playing drums. He did it as a surprise for the band who did not know he would be there. And the black bowler hats he and the choir were wearing is the same as what his father wore with Zeppelin back in the 70s. Very touching moment!

Ann Wilson has one of the most powerful female voices. And her sister Nancy can play a mean guitar. This is one of the best tributes to Led Zeppelin with Ann & Nancy doing the classic song "Stairway To Heaven". No one else could have pulled it off as well. I just wanted to mention the gentleman who played the guitar solo. His name is Shane Fontayne. This guy was given the task of playing what is arguably the most well-known guitar solo in rock music history, in front of one of the greatest guitar players of all time, who is also the guy that created and recorded that solo. Fontayne touches on all the iconic moments of the original, but it's not a note-for-note reproduction. Mostly, the differences are just in the phrasing; he might hold one bend a little longer here, or push a little faster there. But it never goes too far away from Page's version, just enough so that you know another guy, who seems to be pretty damn good, is playing it. It's an incredible artistic achievement, only heightened by the fact that he seems pretty comfortable (not cocky, comfortable) doing it...

Led Zeppelin's lead singer, Robert Plant, was brought to tears because of the drummer, Jason Bonham. Jason is the son of John Bonham, the band's original drummer and Robert's best friend, whose death in 1980 resulted in the end of the band. They had invited Jason to represent his Dad at this ceremony honoring Led Zeppelin. But Jason told them he had a scheduling conflict. The conflict turned out to be walking out on stage to surprise the band by playing the drums during the tribute. Look at how surprised and happy Robert is when they introduced Jason at the beginning. The tears came as Robert thought about his friend and was sad he could not be there. It's also very poignant to watch Jason look up toward heaven, thinking undoubtedly about his Dad, as Anne sings the word heaven in last line of the song.

Even such an iconic and legendary band like Heart, (who have often been referred to as the "Female Led Zeppelin") to play arguably the greatest rock song ever written in front of the very band it was made famous by. It has to be extremely nerve-wracking and intimidating. However, they absolutely blew it out of the water! Only one other band could do this song justice, and they were sitting in the crowd being honored! Truly epic performance by all involved! 🙌

What is extra special is that John Bonham was Robert Plants best friend and after his passing the band was never the same. Plant was moved to tears this evening seeing his best friends son playing on stage with his dads hat on. Near the end of the song Jason looked up as to say Dad this was for you! Very powerful evening for all who witnessed this. Heart is a Class Act! I adore Ann Wilson, and think she’s the greatest female rock singer of her generation….and perhaps she has never been equaled in that genre…but best female vocalist of all time in all genres? That’s quite a claim. You might wish to narrow it a bit to the rock genre…..I mean, if you haven’t heard Lara Fabian, you should. Ditto with Floor Jansen, current lead vocalist with the symphonic metal band Nightwish. I don’t know how broad your taste is, but sample around a bit.

You are correct. Always listen to the original before the cover. You can’t decide as the quality of the cover unless you witness the artistry of the original. After the show…. “It went off really great. Afterward, the Zeppelin guys each came back individually. Jones was like, ‘Wow, you did a great job’ and Robert Plant goes, ‘Whoah, I learned to just hate that song because everybody murders it - but you did it justice. Way to go!’ And Jimmy Page goes ‘You played that great; just lovely.‘”
Side note, the lead guitarist that played the solo, is at mostly all Kennedy Center Honors to play the guitar solos. Michael Barakan, known as Shane Fontayne, is an English rock guitarist. Shane was a lead guitarist with the house band at the Kennedy Center Honors for seven years from 2008 to 2014.

There's a different version of this where Jason Bonham was introduced he smiles and points up to the 3 with his drumsticks and Robert Plant stands up and smiles and points down at Jason. The reason is Plant called and asked Jason to come and represent his father but lied to his Godfather and said he had a gig that night and couldn't get out of. The bowler hats were to honor John Bonham it was his hat of choice and the one Jason is wearing is his dad's hat. Also the drum kit his playing is his dad's.

They had wanted Jason Bohnam (the son of Led Zepplin drummer John Bohnam) to sit with them in the audience, but were disappointed when he said he had a gig that night. You see the surprise in their faces when they realize that THIS was the gig he had. Jimmy Page watching his own guitar solo masterfully played and shining with his approval. And watching Robert Page say "My God!" when the large choir was revealed. Just one of the best Rock and Roll performances of all time. 💯

My favorite song, and Robert's, of all time "Kashmir" up next? AFTER watch them perform it in the one day reunion in 2007 Celebration Day (32 years later). Jason plays drums & destroys it. John Paul Jones playing keyboard & bass with his feet. Jimmy as cool as ever shredding it. Robert's vocals are gonna blow you away. 20 million people tried to get tickets in a lotto system. 😂 Trust me, your mind will be blown & they will show you why Led Zepplin are the greatest of all time. That riff gets in your soul.

Jason calls Robert, Jimmy and Jon his three uncles, whom he said were and continue to be there for him after his father tragically died. I love that someone else recognised YoYo Ma rocking out. Annie and Nancy are the only ones who could do this iconic song justice. Plus we also appreciate the guitar skills of the Sheldon Cooper lookalike.

I've watched this performance probably hundreds of times and get chills every time.
If there's ever anybody to do a Zeppelin cover it's Heart. Actually Robert Plant is the one who said he couldn't stand people covering this song, he told Ann after this he was impressed with this.
There are a bunch of them on RUclips.
I've seen them do "Rock n Roll" as a tribute to Elvis on the day he died 46 years ago.

The guitarist getting Jimmy's solo down, that amazing choir,Jon Bonham's son killing it on drums to honor his late, great, father,Anne's guitar playing and harmonies, and Nancy's powerful vocals carrying us through every part! Jimmy Paige grinning ear to ear was the icing on the musical cake!🎛🥁🎸🎶👊😛🤯🤘

The overall performance was fantastic, but I didn’t really think Shayne nailed the solo. It’s weird to me that they didn’t get another guitar icon who professed Jimmy Page love to do the most iconic solo of all time. That guy was a good player, but he injected an 80s feel to it and just works better as a minor blues. He’s a studio musician who’s not really a huge rock guy and is not really that influenced by Page. Even Slash could’ve nailed it better. Although his tone wasn’t bad so all in all I’d say it was pretty good but didn’t reach Ann Wilson level of glory. Just my opinion.

@@markdecker6190 it wasn’t by any means a bad solo. The guy is a pro. But it’s just a weird choice made by non- guitarist producers. It’s such an iconic treasure in music you think they would’ve handled it with greater care and got someone as adored as Ann Wilson, even if just for the optics. I mean, they used an unknown guitarist who looks like he belongs in The Killers rather than one of the hundreds of Page acolytes who are also better rock players. Hammett? Satriani? Vai? Slash? They’re all recognizable, publicly known Page worshipers, and MUCH better guitarists than that dude. Jeff Beck? For that matter, how have the Foo Fighters become the Zeligs of rock? Kid Rock doing Ramble On? Lenny Kravitz? They’re all Ok but far from Zep level. It’s like Jan Wenner produced this. All that being said, it was still enjoyable, and Jack Black was super fun.

Heart actually started out as a Led Zeppelin cover band called WhiteHeart before they started writing their own music. They have been playing Led Zeppelin songs since 1973, so of course Ann knew how to lay it down here.

My two favorite moments: 1) The reaction of the band and people around them when they realize a gospel choir was added. 2) Jason Bonham's quick look up to his father in heaven just before closing out the song with the symbol roll. That look tells you why he played for only this song during the concert.

As a drummer I cried very hard the first time I saw this because I can imagine God letting John Bonham look down on this performance with his son at the helm of the engine-the heartbeat of the Zeppelin legacy and smiling with Pride! The look on Plant’s face says it all and I think he too felt Bonzo’s presence! Hats off to Heart and all the musicians in stage! It was epic!

The lead gutarist fled the draft during the Veitnam War and Heart moved up to my town to wait out the war. They usually closed the night playing Led Zepplin covers I recall.
They have a lot of hits, I'd suggest 'Crazy On You' next or 'Magic Man'. Both from the debut album which really does not have a bad song on it. Cheers.
