This song is a masterpiece. A master class in building suspense, anticipation through music dynamics. Chills, goosebumps. No wonder it's in so many soundtracks.
I saw Phil Collins in Concert 30 yrs ago. He was awesome. This song was played for the show MIAMI VICE. He never came back to my city. So happy we had free tickets to the show ❤😊😊
Why he was so rightly regarded as being a fantastic drummer, when the crowd prematurely start to cheer before he sits at the kit, brilliant live rendition.
The crowd didn’t “prematurely” start to cheer before he sat down at the drums. They saw the drums being slowly lifted up to the higher stage on a platform from the stage below as Phil Collins approached them and it got the crowd even more fired up because they knew what was getting ready to happen…the drum solo we all wait for. Excellent performance beginning to end!!! (You can see at the beginning of the song that the drums aren’t up there and then as he is almost there you can see the platform finish rising just as he reaches it.)
Phil Collins oh my goodness he absolutely crushed that crushed it I remember when this came out I was working as a bartender and I heard this song so many freaking times I could recite it without it ever being on it was continuously played on the jukebox in both bars that I was working in and absolutely loved it still do always will thanks for the reaction I thoroughly enjoyed it 🫶❣✌
Sounds like a Strat. Looks like a Strat. Maybe a little delay. A very little overdrive. Bottom two pickups. I'm just spitballing here but that's my best guess.
Remember this. Phil Collins and Michael Jackson are the only two artists that sold more than 100M of copies playing alone and more than 100M copies with their bands. Phil is among the greatest musicians ever.
The other person who has sold over 100 million albums as a solo artist and as a member of a band is Sir Paul McCartney of the Beatles. This performance is stellar. Saw him live and phenomenal performance.
*"Well, if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand.."* One of the most brutal opening verses in music. For 25 years with the legendary Genesis and a successful solo career, Phil Collins is one the GOATs in music history. Hard to believe this ITAT performance is 19 years old.
people dont understand how difficult it is to smack the drums THAT hard and still sing without skipping a single breath ; like if you close your eyes you wouldnt think he is playing the drums AND singing that flawlesly at the same time, normally when Drummers sing and drum at the time time you can hear it in the singing ; the breath will be interupted cause of the drumming ; but with this performance you can't tell the difference, phil is a legend
I was a kid when Genesis was massive in the 80s, but I didn’t appreciate it until much later how incredible of a songwriter and performer he was. Absolutely one of the all-time greats
Ive watched no less than 50 reaction videos to this performance and every single time Phil does his drum solo, the people reacting just stop and smile. It can't be helped! He is a genius musician and some people don't realize that he was the lead drummer for Genesis for some time before taking over lead vocals. One of the best drummers to have ever performed!
The whole performance from start to finish is absolutely fantastic. The build up, the atmosphere, the energy towards the end, his vocals, the stage presence, amazing.
The guy with the beard at the beginning who looks like Gandalf: the superlative bassist Leland Sklar. Lee has said that doing this song live always gave him goosebumps…..
I LUV, LUV, LUV, LUV THIS PERFORMANCE!!!!! I'VE SEEN IT SOOOOO MANY TIMES AND IT GIVES ME GOOSE BUMPS EVERY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW-- HE'S THE GOAT!!!!!!!
Just stumbled across this and really enjoyed it 😀 It’s not all that obvious in the video, but the drum kit actually lifted up through the floor, just a few seconds before Phil got there! I’m not sure which venue it was but during one particular performance, the drums failed to raise up. Apparently Phil jumped down into them and hit the drums as usual. What a performer! I’m a huge fan of Phil (& Genesis!) and have seen him perform this live on more than once. Sadly Phil wasn’t drumming the last time I saw him (due to health reasons) but his son Nic drummed instead.. and he too is brilliant! Cheers Steve
I grew up listening to the music of Genesis and Phil Colin's. I remember when this song came out I was cruising down the highway with the top down stero blasting at night. I highly recommend it. It's a cruising song. Phil is one of those musical genius I had the pleasure of experiencing in my lifetime. When I saw an MTV video of Phil while playing drums with Genesis singing Turn Me On Again, you just knew the guy was special. What a privilege.
It blows my mind that people don’t know this song. lol. Phil Collins was my very first concert ever. I saw him perform in 1985 at a venue called, “Poplar Creek” near Chicago. I was 16. It was phenomenal. He performed this same song walking to the drums and killed it then too. ❤
If you are 50+, there is no way you can listen to this, and not think of Miami Vice! Seasons 1 & 2 of the original series are worth a watch at any age!
I 'discovered' Phill Collins and Genesis when I was a teenager. Now I'm 63 y.o. and I still feel goosebumps while listening to this song. Great mister Collins ❤
Sam & Phil, Phil is one of those special artists that is a legend in their lifetime. I have watched this dozens of times. Phil appears to be just wandering about the set, YET he arrives at the drum kit just at the correct time. His timing is perfect!!!! Many forget that Phil is a drummer.!! Sam, you may not be old enough to remember Miami Vice, but this song was in one of their big scenes.. ENJOY it, it is classic!!!!!.......... Notice the audience's response as he gets to the drums... EPIC........... Was that great or what????
I got to see this concert in Oklahoma City Oklahoma in 2004 three months after I got home from being deployed to Afghanistan. It was a bucket list item I loved getting to see. This is hands down the most recognizable drum drop EVER.
i'll never forget it. here in germany, 1986, 9:45 p.m., miami vice. a series like a comic, colorful, miami, cool guys, combined with music shot like a music video, never seen like this before. and then this drum kit pops in during a scene. i'm 56 years old now and remember it like it was yesterday.
Everything about this performance is fantastic. From the atmospheric buildup at the beginning (including Gandalf the Bass), the arrangement with more prominent guitar part in this version, to the iconic drum drop. Perfection.

Phil Collins is best known as the drummer/singer of the rock band Genesis in the 70's & for his solo career. He has had so many great hits such as "Another Day In Paradise", "I Don't Care Anymore", "Against All Odds", "One More Night", "Sussudio", "Take Me Home", "Two Hearts", "A Groovy Kind Of Love", "I Wish It Would Rain Down", "You Can't Hurry Love" etc.
He's also known as one of the 3 artists that have made more than 100mil both as a band member and a solo artists, the others being Paul McCartney and MJ
Brilliant performance of the song. Great suspense created, culminating in the section where he sits down at the drumkit and lets rip with the iconic drum part. Wonderful. All the hairs on my arms were tingling.
I still remember first time I saw Phil Collins was in 1982 on a TV musical show called "Solid Gold". He sang his first ever hit "Can't hurry love". I was 13 yrs old 😉
Face Value was released in 1981. "The album's lead single, "In the Air Tonight", reached number one in Austria, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, and Switzerland, and is often cited as his signature song." It was #2 in UK, Canada. It was #19 in the US, which is still a "top 40" hit. You Can't Hurry Love was a cover of The Supremes song, so not a Phil Collins written original song like In the Air Tonight. That song was released in 1982. It hit #1 in fewer countries than ITAT, and overall didn't do as well worldwide as ITAT. It did slightly better in the US since it was a recognizable Motown tune. None of that is neither here nor there. They were both big hits, and In the Air Tonight came out a year before his Supremes cover. Thus, by logic, In the Air Tonight was his first hit. And it still stands today as the song people first think of when Phil Collins is mentioned.
Phil wrote this during marriage issues so is why the intensity. The original is on a solo album (after he left Genesis) 'Face Value' album & has some other really good tracks. It's always been one of my fav songs.
