Don't just sing in front of thousands of people. Walk the stage over to, and up, the stairway perfectly in time. Then make your way over to a drum kit, just in time to sit down and play the most iconic drop of all time, while still singing. No biggie. Just LEGENDARY!!!

I was so happy I got to go see Genesis in their final tour. Cried the whole time. I saw Genesis live in the 1980's, & have been in love with their music + Phil's solo stuff ever since. He has also been in 2 movies (that I know of) & he is an awesome actor as well. One movie is called Buster, & my favorite one is Fraud. You can watch them free on either RUclips or on Roku. I'll just say that the actor who plays Elrond in The Lord of the Rings is also in it. He was so young back then I didn't even recognize him! Lol!
Everyone else in these comments have been thorough suggesting songs from Phil, so I'll just tell you thanks for doing this one & I look forward to other amazing songs by this legend. He did a duet with Philip Baily in the 80's called Easy Lover. It was released by Philip Baily. The music video is really creative!!!
      Y'all have a Happy Easter & a great weekend! 💜

Mr. Collins has a dislocated vertebrae in his neck from when he was playing with Genesis (he even came out sometimes in a wheelchair). Itwas incredibly painful for him to drum by this point, so to do that iconic drop? But he did it even though he had sometimes taped the drumsticks to his hands to keep holding them... Because yes, he's one of the very few drummers who also sings, and he's so badass at it. It's like the gift from god for all of us. He's since had spine surgery for it, but all the spine screws and stuff left him with a foot that goes numb all the time so he can't use his feet to drum anymore and he can barely stand up for a long concert. And he still powered on for so long with those injuries, it's incredible.

When Phil was in the studio recording this masterpiece, he didn't like the way the drums sounded on the recording. So his engineers and him together came up with "gated reverb". A new way of recording drums. It's now the industry standard, thanks to THIS SONG

    • @RobertKekuna
      @RobertKekuna 3 года назад +30

The gated reverb was "discovered" during the recording of Peter Gabriel's third album in 1980. It was a happy accident where Gabriel did something during recording and Collins, who was drumming, made a huge sound. They put that drum sound on the song "Intruder" on the album. This is why Collins knew this sound existed, and he put it in this song. Phil's "Face Value" album was released the next year, I believe.

@@christinerobinson9372 I don't think it was ever released without drums. Collins played a recording without drums to Ahmet Ertugun, the head of Atlantic Records at the time. He told Phil to put some kind of percussion from the beginning. Phil told him that the drums come in at about 3 minutes, but Ertugun told him that record buyers won't know that and will lose interest before the big drum moment arrives. Of course he was right and the rest is history.

If you noticed, the audience cheered before he reached the drums because they knew what was coming. You may know this, but he was the drummer for Genesis when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. When Gabriel left the band and they tried out several new lead singers, there wasn’t one they were happy with. Someone in the band knew Phil could sing, so they said he should try out. That is how he became a lead singer. Years later he was asked, did he consider himself a drummer or a singer...he said drummer. People in this audience would have known of his drumming for Genesis, maybe seen him in concert as the drummer, so that is why people get excited to hear him play. Saw him live as the lead for Genesis, yes he sings this well.

People don't factor that in really, your body shape and posture etc affects your voice, singing while drumming is incredibly hard.
Pick a song you know the words to and then try singing along perfectly while pretending to drum along at the same time. Even if you don't know how to drum, just think about how hard that would be to do both flawlessly.

Against All Odds is another classic Phil Collins song. I've been to see him in concert at least half a dozen times and he's always amazing. Especially when you consider he manages to keep his vocals steady, no wavering with exertion, while physically pounding those drums.
Still my fave singer of all time.
Also love his songs with Genesis, particularly Dreaming While You Sleep.

I’ve seen him in concern with Genesis and solo since the 80’s and am always amazed at how he commands an audience. This live version of In the Air, always gave me chills.

It's funny, at large events, rallies, conventions, whatever, when this song is playing in the background you'll see people just suddenly in unison do the air drumming when it hits. It's like muscle memory now for people.

Real artists dont have to lip sync? They don't needed recorded music either. They play and sing! The younger generation never really seen this before. Todays crap doesnt hold a candle to yesterdays artist/music. And I dont like when they take someone elses music and try to make it their own.

Fun fact about Phil Collins..... he’s also written and performed songs for Disney movies, Brother Bear and Tarzan - he has an Academy Award for best original song “You’ll Be In My Heart” from Disney’s Tarzan movie. He is extremely talented!

My kids grew up watching the French version of Tarzan, and Phil Collins did the songs in French! I was so impressed! Usually my kids would lose interest during the songs in Disney movies because they would be in English and they didn’t understand the lyrics.
Some artists had no excuse for not singing the songs for the French versions (looking at you, Celine Dion)

I am 68 years old and I have been truly, truly blessed to have been able to see almost every musical act in the last 55 years. I saw Phil Collins do this song live and it was something you never ever forget. My very first live concert was James Brown in 1968, no cell phones, no big screens and it was mind blowing watching this man perform in front of me 30 feet away. He was absolute electricity. I was 15 years old , I went to the concert alone sitting 3 rows from the stage. Blew me away. I would never be the same after feeling the energy of a live performance. Such live performances are gifts and go straight to the soul.
I have been blessed to see AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, David Bowie, Tom Jones, The Eagles, Moody Blues , Santana,
Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, The Eagles, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, U2, Stevie Wonder.....this is only a partial list.
I LOVE your channel because every generation should understand that music is a vibration that affects the human cells and the higher the vibration the more pleasure we feel. There is no color in music, it is only the vibration of love and peace to all human beings. Keep spreading this wonderful vibration of peace, love and respect for all human beings.
