Do you understand now how lucky we were to live in the 70s and to hear all these musical jewels on the radio every day. We only have to say names like Led zep, Boston, Genesis, Styx, Supertramp, Kansas, Pink Floyd and many more.
What I much liked in that era is that Kansas wrote great songs about legends, myths, philosophy, funny things, instead of the many boring songs about more mundane matters. I loved The Closet Chronicles, and Icarus (Borne on WIngs of Steel), and many others.
Seriously guys..seriously..you really need to WATCH the VIDEO..in the STUDIO of this performance..its CRAZY..(you've never seen so much hair)...the keyboard guy is INCREDIBLE !! Take it from a Canadian grgrandma(played in bands) so I know of what I speak !! You are great reactors !!!
Being from Kansas I stand by these talented individuals. They use to play in Manhattan in early 70's., a bit of a college town. Think this is when my brother decided to play keyboard. ✌🎶🎤🎸🎹🥁🎻🤘
Steve Walsh was the lead vocalist on both songs you ask about Dust in the Wind and Carry On Wayward Son. He was the voice of Kansas. Robbie Steinhart, violinist, a great voice in his own right provided the killer contrasting harmonies for Kansas most of the time. He also sang lead on a lot of songs like Cheyenne anthem on Leftoverture or Sparks of the Tempest from the next studio release 1978's Point of Know Return where Dust in the Wind resides. I, too, had a chance to spend some time with Kerry, however it was only for an hour and a half for lunch in Topeka where he lives. Kansas recorded some of the best Music of the 70 and 80s. Just a classic band and song! Kansas will never get old to me. Styx is another band from that era that were just amazing!
Kansas is my favorite band and the only group to successfully blend classical music with top notch rock. They are some of the finest musicians on the planet. Unbelievable talent.
One of the most technically proficient bands at ever instrument from that era, or any other for that matter, that anyone could've ever hoped to see live, and their vocals and harmonies were always just completely off the hook. Live and in the studio. It didn't come easy for these guys in the music business. They actually had to work their asses off to get to the top, but once they clicked with fans and live audiences they exploded BIG TIME!! Kansas was such a phenomenally talented band it's almost illegal how good they were!
Kansas is such a unique entity. They have 2 singers, 2 guitar players, 2 keyboard players and a Violin. Leftoverture and Point of Know Return are both perfect records, every single song is worth hearing.
Perfect song for the different transitions. If you enjoy Kansas, check out Styx, another American rock band. Some of their songs are similar in style. Come Sail Away, Renegade, Grand Illusion are great examples. Word of warning, they did quite a few ballads, but the ones I named are more along the rock side. The 1970’s and 80’s had a hell of a lot of great music and I’m glad your discovering it.
I highly recommend checking out South Park's Eric Cartman singing "Come Sail Away"... It features Issaac Hayes as Chef and it's actually pretty awesome.
Ottawa James, I like your idea. But I think that they should react to the Styx version first, so that they could be more familiar with the song. The Bros are from Europe, so I’m not sure if the type of comedy South Park is would be up their alley. That would be like asking them to react to the Simpson’s or Family Guy without seeing an episode.
"Oh Mama I'm in fear for my life from the long arm of the law.".... "Renegade" by Styx is the best transition from" Carry On Wayward Son" and an absolute banger!
The 70s was an era of musical explosion the world has ever witnessed. Legions of bands were formed, genres were created, and originality was a mainstay. Sadly that era has passed. If you'd like to see a great live version from that era, check out Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter - Tobacco Road (Live). I promise your mind will be blown. The link to it is right here: ruclips.net/video/af0rV6dli_o/видео.html
True, early 70s was an explosion of innovation and experimentation. You have to recognize the unique opportunity though, since this was the first time pop music could let go of the social restrictions and just go for it. They paved the way for rock music, but they had the luxury of a blank slate. Later bands are often compared to or accused of plagiarism because of that. Still, the progrock scene is very much alive today as it was in the 70s. The 80s were very meager progrock wise, but the 90s picked up with Dream Theater and Porcupine tree and since the 2000s it is booming again. Check out Haken, Sylvan, Mostly Autumn, Kaprekar´s Constant, Lifesigns to name a few.
@@praapje The early music of the '60s and '70s were accused of plagiarism as well. They were inspired by early blues black artists such as Blind Willie, Muddy Waters, the list goes on. Led Zeppelin was sued over it. I wouldn't say it was a blank slate, but I know what you're saying. It was an epic time and I'm so glad it was a part of my life. What a gift!
@@tammieparrishmiller3669 In essence every ´new´ genre is based on older ones. Practically every genre has some debt to age old folk songs and traditional music through the ages. Blues came out of the slave folk songs, country borrowed from that as did the blues. Rock n Roll derived from the blues and this in turn inspired rock and progrock. Maybe the sole answer to the creativity in the late 60s and early 70s is simply LSD.
Kansas was a very popular and well loved band in it's time. It's timeless and classic, so it will always be around for new generations to discover. Listen to The Wall
I have always loved this song going all the way back back to high school and then for it to become the unofficial theme song for supernatural well I died and gone to heaven.
If you guys haven't reacted yet to Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult, you've been missing out on a really great song. I promise, you'll love it.
Seriously underrated band.....awash with talent. The writer Kerry Livgren....genius, Steve Walsh.....one of rocks great vocalists, Phil Ehart....seriously good drummer.....the whole band rocked. This is one of rocks great songs......and this band (with changed line up) are still touring! Legends!
This beast of a song came out my freshman year of college - late 1975. I’ve loved Kansas ever since. Dust in the Wind was just one of many softer songs they did - they were great at those, too! All the World, Nobody’s Home are examples. They are a true American prog rock band, blending blues with orchestral arrangements. For a shot of their blues roots, try 2 Cents Worth from the Masque album. For their audio story of the creation of the country, and how they feel it’s been abused, try ‘Song for America’.
They needed one more song for this album and Kerry Livgren went to his room and wrote this song and brought it to the band in the morning...They were blown away !
Yes Excellent! Kansas was so far ahead of their time and mind blowing when they showed up in 1974, to me they still are timeless in 2021. This song was from their 4th album Leftoverture released in 1976. You'd like the album before this one titled Masque (1975). The song "Icarus Wings of Steele was incredible to me, it stood out. Totally different but It impressed me similarly to Carry On My Wayward son. The lead singer Steve Walsh is the same guy who sang Dust in the wind. The violin player Robby Steinhart also sings some lead and harmony but with a deeper voice. Kansas stands alone. Every new band has to pay their dues and open up for bigger bands on tour, when Kansas first came out, they got a reputation with other bands. Most established bands didn't want them to open up for them because Kansas really stole the show right away. If you haven't heard of the band Foreigner you would also like them. Not comparing them to Kansas but Great vocals and good songs. I love your honest reactions to great music. Much love and Peace to you both.
This song is as spectacular now as it was 43 years ago.Yes,it was released 43 years ago in 1978.I was 9 years old. This song, and many others kind of raised me,and made me who I am today.

This always seems to me a very atypical song from Kansas. They lean more to progrock than straight rock, which surprised me when I started listening to them. Especially the album Masque from 1975 is amazing.
I'm so fortunate that my youngest daughter (age late 30s .. Yikes!) loves all things 70s and I have a great time hearing HER reactions to my music! You guys are great!

One of the best rockin' songs out there. So beautifully executed and vocally pleasing, it's a classic. Plus, I'm a big fan of the tv show Supernatural, so I loved your reaction. It was ironic. Nice!!!

One of the greatest songs and greatest bands. Seen them in concert a couple of times. Even my wife who never listened to music much was blown away. Thanks for sharing this wonderful 🎶. 😎
This was a great time to be into music and a teenager. You never knew when you were going to hear an epic new song for the first time. This song always reminds me of when I first heard the song 'Parallels' on the radio by the band Yes. You had to drop everything. You wanted to hear it again. You often wouldn't get any information as the DJ often would play many songs before coming on mike to tell you what the songs were. 'Like a Hurricane' by Neil Young was another Epic tune on the radio at the same time well worth hearing and sharing with the world.
I love listening to these songs with you. Your enthusiasm is really infectious. To get a song right in-between the two you've heard from Kansas, I'd suggest "Portrait (He Knew)" . There is so much good music from them for you to break open. Looking forward to it.
Because I know every beat to every one of these songs (am 55) I love watching you guys hear it for the first time - I know what's coming and I know when your eyes will light up. It's so great to see you guys hearing this today!
"Carry On Wayward Son" is definitely the band's masterpiece. First and foremost, they are all talented musicians. This is an epic song. It's still practically unknown by the current generations. I just wish that artists like this were rediscovered and passed down like it's always been done in the past. Someone out there, please do it. It's worth it. Keep it going.
Talent,talent,talent....period.The song you hope never ends.Perfect transitions. These guys had many hits you need to listen to....some I call genius songs like this one.Ae singer as “ Dust”,just great backup singing, too.
This band is top five. For me top two. Unmatchable musicianship, songwriting and arrangements. Five world class musicians from a town of only 50,000 people, from the most unmusical environment possible!Think about that for a moment
Great reaction and hilarious you said Supernatural because it is the unofficial theme song for the TV Show Supernatural including having Kansas at Comic Con for the show panel. Kansas is another one of those amazing bands from the 70's that had their own sound, did their own thing. You didn't really hear it much in this song but they have a violin in most songs. Good luck diving into the rabbit hole that is Kansas. :) Chris
What’s most mind-blowing about this amazing song is that Kerry Livgren, Kansas’ main songwriter, guitarist and keyboardist, wrote it the night before they recorded this version! The band was told in no uncertain terms that if they didn’t have a hit single on this record, they would lose their recording contract. In those days, that would usually spell the end of an act. Livgren was under the gun and apparently, is at his best when under serious pressure! Of course, it helps to be freakishly talented, as all the guys in Kansas were. And how about that singing? Steve Walsh is the lead singer here and on Dust in the Wind and is also the guy ripping on that Hammond organ! Robbie Steinhardt, the original violinist, is providing some very nice harmony vocals. Needless to say, the song was a giant hit and is still being played on classic rock radio and appearing in TV shows and movies today. Leftoverture, the album it’s from, has sold nearly five million copies and is bursting with evergreen songs full of virtuoso playing, singing and some of the deepest, most meaningful lyrics in all of rock. You have to check out The Wall, Miracles out of Nowhere and Magnum Opus. Kansas rules!!!

The Bros are from Europe, so I’m not sure if the type of comedy South Park is would be up their alley. That would be like asking them to react to the Simpson’s or Family Guy without seeing an episode.
Oh, so many awesome songs from Kansas .... Sparks of the Tempest ... Lightning's Hand ... so many more .... keep searching
I just have to say that the 70s was the golden age of music. The rock concerts were incredible.
One of the best intros and outros in any song ever. Have always loved this song. Glad you guys enjoyed it.
"Oh Mama I'm in fear for my life from the long arm of the law.".... "Renegade" by Styx is the best transition from" Carry On Wayward Son" and an absolute banger!
Right on
💯
I swear, I had this song with lots of bonfire-parties- and spliffed or not spliffed, even drunk -the people freaked out....
my favorite rock song and band from my high school days...loved your reaction
Oh man, the Winter bros. were the shit! Tobacco Road? Hell yes! How about Johnny Winter's Frankenstein? That would blow their minds as well!
That first sentence kinda confused me.
Even more amazed if you watch them play the song live
Kansas was a very popular and well loved band in it's time. It's timeless and classic, so it will always be around for new generations to discover. Listen to The Wall
I have always loved this song going all the way back back to high school and then for it to become the unofficial theme song for supernatural well I died and gone to heaven.
All the many emotions as you travel through life
If you guys haven't reacted yet to Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult, you've been missing out on a really great song. I promise, you'll love it.
Freaking my second favorite band ever! And Buck Dharma is the greatest most underrated guitarist in history!
Point of No Return. Another great one from Kansas
A rock symphony!! Loved this reaction!
You must see them LIVE. It's amazing.
Legends!
I could listen to this song 100 ×s a day and never get bored.
Boston, Triumph and Rush are some bands you guys should check out if you havent already
I can't believe I all but forgot Triumph ! As soon as I read this I went and listened to some of their music. Thanks for reminding me. ❤✌
Love you guys' reaction! I was 14 when this came out, and I still love it today! It will always be a classic.
I live next door to The Wayward Sons Motorcycle/ biker Clubhouse.
I hear this song alot.
After supernatural, i can't listen to this song without crying 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Drummers dream song, so fun to play!!!
They were masters of progressive rock!
The voice, the lyrics, the music… such depth.
You can imagine how we felt hearing this for the first time in ‘76 - blown A-WAY! The ‘70s were really a magical time for musical creativity..
Kansas belongs to the Hall of Rock also .
Kansas - Song For America. You'll love it.
Guys you want your mind blown? I promise. Jeff Healy. “ as the years go passing by”. Live in Stuttgart Germany. He was a good friend of SRV. Keep in mind he is also, blind. I promise you will be amazed. Another guitarist that will shock you.
I appreciate your appreciation for how diverse this song is
I've been listening to rock music for 40+ years, and I'm still discovering new artists. There is so much out there guys.
To me, Kansas and Boston are the great examples of what I will describe as Heavy Rock, Yes, they both have beautiful voices but they bring the power rock.
I was a teenager in the early 70's. I can't begin to list all of the great bands we listened to! It was an amazing time to be young!
You guys are great, I’ve said it before but you react in the way I feel !! That’s why I am hooked on your channel as you make me feel great, well done to you both 🥰 thank you
Your right the song has everything! One of the greatest hard rock songs.
Saw them in concert in the 80’s🤟Great instrumentalists, performers, and harmonies. Literally out of this world🤟🤟🤟
glad to see you guys loving the Music of my youth. I was a teenager in the 70's great time to grow up .so many great bands for young people to appreciate.
After much thought and many reaction videos I can finally answer the question "how was there so much good music during this time and why is it so different today?" Answer-this is what you get when you give a kid an instrument as a gift instead of a cell phone. Love you guys.
Kansas recorded some of the best Music of the 70 and 80s. Just a classic band and song! Kansas will never get old to me.
Many people, consider it, to be the ULTIMATE classic rock song!😊
@Bros I know you don’t know me OR haven’t seen me much. I don’t tend to leave a lot of comments-(just enjoy watching). But I grew up thru a lot of this music. I’ve seen some in concert. PLEASE, I’m trying to tell you it’s PAST- TIME you graduate to RUSH . (I don’t mean that Led Zep is elementary of COURSE!) But I mean from all the other stuff- as REALLY GOOD as some are.
YOU NEED TO REACT TO RUSH.
Just make sure you’re ready.😁
TONNNS OF SONGS- HARD TO CHOOSE WHERE TO START:
1. Limelight
2. Xanadu
3 Territories
4. Clockwork Angels
5. 2112
C’mon- DIVE IN! We here in the comment section would LOVE to send you big “CONGRATULATIONS” for taking this step.😘

Miracles Out of Nowhere was another giant smash hit from Leftoverture.
I can hardly wait until you discover the band Rush. I highly recommend the song Xanadu from the "Exit Stage Left" concert. Yo will be blown away.
@Zoey The Savannah RusH is composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any the ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands.
Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
@Zoey The Savannah I was 8 in 77' but I saw the Exit Stage Left tour. Rush was my absolute favorite band for much of my life and still in the top 5.
Kiss also joked about them staying in their rooms in the RusH doc, Beyond The Lighted Stage. if you haven't seen it, it's really good..!

Dust In The Wind is ANOTHER PHENOMENAL KANSAS SONG!!! 😂👍💖
One of the best rockin' songs out there. So beautifully executed and vocally pleasing, it's a classic. Plus, I'm a big fan of the tv show Supernatural, so I loved your reaction. It was ironic. Nice!!!
I love how you guys break down the stanzas on this song. I grew up with Kansas and they are so underrated
HAHA omg it just dawned on me you guys dont know. when i read your description i thought you guys already knew this was used in the "supernatural" TV series. Just a funny coincidence i guess. great reaction video guys keep em coming. later.
Yes I saw the comment to react to “ Styx” Great band❣️
Because I know every beat to every one of these songs (am 55) I love watching you guys hear it for the first time - I know what's coming and I know when your eyes will light up. It's so great to see you guys hearing this today!
"Carry On Wayward Son" is definitely the band's masterpiece. First and foremost, they are all talented musicians. You might also like their radio hits "Point of Know Return" and "People of the South Wind" (about the Kaw Nation, the Native American people for whom the state of Kansas was named for). Point of Know Return: ruclips.net/video/iFWtsT5zRKo/видео.html People of the South Wind: ruclips.net/video/FtXwopQ0GYo/видео.html
This is an epic song. It's still practically unknown by the current generations. I just wish that artists like this were rediscovered and passed down like it's always been done in the past. Someone out there, please do it. It's worth it. Keep it going.
Prophet, put the fire out, dragon attack. Stone cold crazy. Just a touch of Queen. 60s 70s 80s. The best music of all time!!!
:) Chris
Steve Walsh sang both Dust in the Wind and Carry on My Wayward Son. Chris
Please react to Styx song "Renegade"
