Cheap Trick was scheduled to open the show but one of their equipment trucks went off the road in the ice, so Kansas played to a 1/4 capacity crowd after inviting everyone down to the front of the stage. Absolutely everything is perfect about this song. The lyrics. The vocal melody and harmonies. The instrumentation and arrangement. The technical mastery. The absolutely tight pocket of that rhythm section. The tone. The recording of the instruments. The mixing. The stereo separation. Effects. Not a note out of place. On top of that, crazy emotional impact and feeling. Perfect.
In my opinion it's of the greatest songs ever. The mixing is so good, a lot of times organs and keyboards get drowned out by the guitars, but here the vocals and instruments all shine together and it gives it that extra impact. Plus that organ solo is great as well.
Such a kickass tune, from the ultimate era of music: classic rock. DUST IN THE WIND is much softer, but the lyrics are deep and meaningful, and kind of sad.
I remember when it came out, never heard of Kansas before, talk about an impactful song, wow, never heard anything like it, think it was 1976, getting close to the end of the classic rock era, wonder how many records we flipped through in record stores back then, could spend all day, and then bring them back home and put them in the milk crate, to flip through them again.
And when they play it on the final episode of the entire series I am going to be in hysterics and will cry every single time I hear this song For ever after that. I have already booked my appointments with my psychiatrist To help me deal with the end Of supernatural. Or rather, as Jenson says, it's not goodbye That were just going away for a little bit
"The Wall" is the one Kansas song I keep coming back to. After 40 years of listening to this band, it is the one that I don't feel is dated or irrelevant.
One the greatest songs of all time , when Kansas made this classic , no stone was left unturned from start to finish , i don't think the modern bands could ever come close , 5 minutes of extreme musical timing , great lyrics , guitar , drums and vocal timing , this is my top 2 of all time songs , the other is Riders on the storm . A song for everyone . All lives matter ..
@Mike Walter I used to play keyboards. I made the mistake of buying a KB300 amp, where the amp and speakers were one unit. I couldn't move it, so the guys kept it in the truck and I just brought the keyboards, etc.
This song is basically the Parable of the Wayward Son from the Bible put told in the form of a song. Dust in the Wind and The Wall are also good songs by Kansas among many others.
Bands like Kansas, Boston, Chicago, ELO (even if they're not in the geography club), they transcend era and they're beyond any division. People will be rocking out to their music in 3020
This song is a standout. This performance/song/band is one of the best ever. The lead singer also plays the church keyboards but bounces back and forth from them to bongos to vocals. If you get a chance, watch the live version. I was fortunate to see them in concert in Detroit in the 70s. They sound live like the studio recording. They must be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but sadly aren't........ yet.
I was wondering when you were gonna get to this one, Jamel. It's one of the quintessential rock tunes of all time, but what sets it apart from most is that, where most songs have only one hook that drives the tune, this song is literally hook after hook after hook; each taking you further along the journey. If you're digging that Hammond B3 Organ, then you're gonna LOVE Kansas. I would recommend "Point of No Return". Peace, love, and music, brother! ヅ
"Dust in the Wind" is totally different but still an all-timer. Check out some Todd Rundgren, too: "Hello, It's Me", "I Saw the Light" or "Bang the Drum All Day"

It is mixing a bunch of different famous biblical, and Greek tales. I was flying ever higher, but I flew too high is Icarus. Carry On Wayward I believe is in the tale of Ulysses.
Went to an amphitheatre in 2006 for Kansas. An hour into the show they turned lights out 5 minutes (beer for me). But about 3,000 of the 10,000 people left. They hadn't played "Dust", yet: I and my date wasn't moving! It came next. But was perfectly quiet for the intro. Awesome
Man, Miracle out of Nowhere is the song that made me a fan of Kansas for life. I heard the song the same week my wife and I found out we were expecting our first child. Although the situations different, it sticks with me because we were told we were never going to have kids, and then boom. A miracle out of nowhere. Amazing song.
This is the theme song for my fave show Supernatural. The guy who reacts to the episodes of the show calls himself Wayward Winchester. Thanks Kansas💝💝💝

I can’t like this comment enough. Yes!!! So much talent in the music of the 70’s and 80’s. Lyrics are carefully crafted (for the most part) and filled with meaning. The skill of the musicians and singer - 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!
Hi Jamel! Carry on Wayward Son back story... "This was written by Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren. According to Livgren, the song was not written to express anything specifically religious, though it certainly expresses spiritual searching and other ideas. Livgren became an evangelical Christian in 1980, and has said that his songwriting to that point was all about "searching." Regarding this song, he explained: "I felt a profound urge to 'Carry On' and continue the search. I saw myself as the 'Wayward Son,' alienated from the ultimate reality, and yet striving to know it or him. The positive note at the end ('surely heaven waits for you') seemed strange and premature, but I felt impelled to include it in the lyrics. It proved to be prophetic." This song can be seen as the continuation of the last song of Kansas' previous album Masque. As stated in the last verse of "The Pinnacle": I stood where no man goes Above the din I rose Life is amusing though we are losing Drowned in tears of awe By definition in the Cambridge dictionary, "din" is a loud, unpleasant, confused noise which lasts for a long time. The first line of "Carry On Wayward Son" is: "Once I rose above the noise and confusion." >> This was the group's first major hit, and like their next one, "Dust In The Wind," it was a last minute addition to the album. Kerry Livgren wrote the song just two days before they started recording Leftoverture. At that point, the band was polishing the songs they had, not bringing in new ones. "I've got one more song that you might want to hear," he told the band, and when he played "Carry On," they knew it was a hit and made it the lead track on the album. The a cappella vocals in the beginning of this song gave it a very distinctive intro. This worked well on rock radio stations where disc jockeys rarely talked over the music. This song has appeared in several movies, including Heroes (1977), Happy Gilmore (1996) and Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)."
Back in the the day when these bands came out with hit songs, you would hear the single on the radio or you heard about the song/band by word of mouth, house parties etc . We didn't have the exposure via internet that we have now a days. You save your money go by the LP. You would play the song over and over and over to learn the lyrics. The good old days.
My parents had this lp when I was a kid and I pretty much annihilated it from listening to it over and over again. Whole album is fire!

I saw Kansas decades ago then recently...superb musicianship, excellent compositions. I met a local drummer a few years ago who's son was the current Kansas drummer. Father/son drummers. Geneva, IL.
This is a PERFECT STORM song! Magnum Opus! It has EVERYTHING! Everyone firing on ALL CYLINDERS! This song reminds me of my late brother. "Carry on, my Wayward Son, there'll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest. Don't Cha cry no more!" R.I.P. my Tommie. ♥️😭♥️
This essentially became the theme song for the show Supernatural, and it is much loved by the show's fans. So much so that Kansas was invited to San Diego Comic-con a few years back to play the song in Hall H before the Supernatural panel. There's a video of it, and it is so great to see it. The audience is totally loving it and the band is just rocking it and getting such a high from the fan reaction.
A couple of the members became Christians, but the band was never labeled as such. Kerry's songwriting may have taken a more spiritual tone, which evidently lead to some schism's in the group. Kerry and Dave Hope pursued other ventures, one of which became the Christian group AD. AD in itself was not supposed to be a strictly Christian music, but contractual obligations (Kerry to Kansas) kept them from being able to release the music on secular labels.
Dust in the Wind was a guitar finger exercise that Kerry wrote. His wife said he should play it for the guys and it became their biggest hit. They are the only band that I've paid to see 4 times, starting in 1976, (I know. 4 times isn't that many but when you're on a tight budget, you don't get out much.)
Yeah, Dust in the Wind and Carry On were written before Livgren found Jesus. He became a Christian during the tour for Monolith (in 1979, I believe), and their next album, Audio-Visions, really started showing Livgren's newfound Christian faith, with songs like Hold On (written for his wife) and Relentless. Steve Walsh left the band and John Elefante joined, and they became a straight up Christian band for two albums, Vinyl Confessions and Drastic Measures, before the band broke up. Walsh would later re-form the band and leave their Christian past behind.
@@LilHoss I wanted to see them last month but the corona virus delayed the concert. I saw them in 2007 and I got to be front row center! I love their new lineup BTW
Kerry Livgreen was one of the writers of this song and like "Dust in the Wind" it is heavily influenced by his search for meaning in life and God. He later left the band and became a Christian music artist. It appears that you're searching a bit yourself, having a shirt about teaching peace. Jesus claimed to offer a peace that transcends all understanding. He also said we all would face storms, but that if we would trust Him as our rock, we would have peace in the midst of them.
Kerry Livgren wrote this song totally on his own and it's about his spiritual journey through many and varied religions...he finally became a Christian around 1980..( it's all In his book 'seeds of change'...) Incredible songwriter/poet

You have probably heard "Dust in the Wind" and "Point of Know Return"... one of my faves is "The Spider" which runs into "Portrait (He Knew)" from the album Point of Know Return...be sure and check those out. Interesting story on this song...they almost had the album finished but needed one more song...Kerry Livgren went home and wrote this whole song in one night...ended up being their biggest hit before Dust in the Wind.

The sparks of the tempest are burnin' you through
Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain
Though they may promise, they only bring pain
The future is managed, and your freedom's a joke
You don't know the difference as you put on the yoke

Run for the cover, Millennium's here
Bearing the standard of confusion and fear
Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain
Though they may promise, they only bring pain
Blood in the sand, a cry in the street
Now the cycle is nearly complete
Ten thousand years, and nothing was learned
No turning back, now the wheel has turned
Big Brother is watching and he likes what he sees
A world for the taking, when he's ready to squeeze
The King and the Queen are gone, each piece is the same
The difference between us is a part of the game

In my opinion it's of the greatest songs ever. The mixing is so good, a lot of times organs and keyboards get drowned out by the guitars, but here the vocals and instruments all shine together and it gives it that extra impact. Plus that organ solo is great as well.
I can't help it, every time I hear this I just imagine a black '67 Impala driving down a dusty back road. Forever associated with _Supernatural_ .
although I also like supernatural, the first thing that comes to my mind is randy marshs interpretation of the song.
Same lol

Such a kickass tune, from the ultimate era of music: classic rock. DUST IN THE WIND is much softer, but the lyrics are deep and meaningful, and kind of sad.
I'm sure he's heard that one too
I remember when it came out, never heard of Kansas before, talk about an impactful song, wow, never heard anything like it, think it was 1976, getting close to the end of the classic rock era, wonder how many records we flipped through in record stores back then, could spend all day, and then bring them back home and put them in the milk crate, to flip through them again.
I think this song is about heaven ❤️
I totally agree with your sentiment about the classic era of rock music.
Deep enough to impress So Crates
This song always reminds me of one of my favorite shows, Supernatural. Rock on, Winchester Brothers 🤘
Still holds up... One of the most epic rock songs of all time.
The unofficial theme to the CW's Supernatural. One episode, a school takes the song down to pretty much the vocals and it's beautiful.
SPN fam!!!! Can’t believe it’s going to be over 😩

And when they play it on the final episode of the entire series I am going to be in hysterics and will cry every single time I hear this song For ever after that. “The Wall” is an OUTSTANDING Kansas song.
The Wall is a great song!
this one right here
"The Wall" is the one Kansas song I keep coming back to. After 40 years of listening to this band, it is the one that I don't feel is dated or irrelevant.
The Wall is amazing. Point of Know Return is epic as well.
Yes! Great tune. And 'Song For America' is my favorite (albeit I haven't heard all of their stuff yet).
Back when bands hauled around "that church organ" Hamond B3, a staple of the classic rock sound.
I used to follow a band where the keyboardist used one. It was a WHALE! Eventually he switched to a Yamaha, but still brought the leslie speaker.
The bane of every roadie.
@ Or when you work for the only backline rental in town that has one.
@Mike Walter I used to play keyboards. I made the mistake of buying a KB300 amp, where the amp and speakers were one unit. I couldn't move it, so the guys kept it in the truck and I just brought the keyboards, etc.
Boss hammond!
This song is basically the Parable of the Wayward Son from the Bible put told in the form of a song. Dust in the Wind and The Wall are also good songs by Kansas among many others.
Ahhhh. the soundtrack to my youth ... Kansas ... "Carry On My Wayward Son" is a masterpiece ... yeah! I said it. 🙂
Bands like Kansas, Boston, Chicago, ELO (even if they're not in the geography club), they transcend era and they're beyond any division. People will be rocking out to their music in 3020
Geography club 😂😂😂
Speaking of Chicago. I'd like too hear more of them. We all appreciate what u. do. Your my favorite disc jockey. Lol

Shaun Hensley Thanks for the homonym correction
This song is a standout. This performance/song/band is one of the best ever. The lead singer also plays the church keyboards but bounces back and forth from them to bongos to vocals. If you get a chance, watch the live version. I was fortunate to see them in concert in Detroit in the 70s. They sound live like the studio recording. They must be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but sadly aren't........ yet.
Song is also used for the recap of the final episode of every ‘Supernatural’ season
My son and I have already agreed that hearing it for the last time is probably going to put us in tears.
and then the Fan Fiction musical...
Season 10 and 11 finale does not play the song
Nice to know.

"Teach Peace". Amen brother, amen. Let there be Peace when we are done.
Check out some Todd Rundgren, too: "Hello, It's Me", "I Saw the Light" or "Bang the Drum All Day"
More Todd: "Time Heals," "The Want of a Nail," "Just One Victory," "International Feel."
Now you're moving into Gary Wright territory !!!!!!
My fave Rundgren song is Couldn't I Just Tell You?. Also like We Got To Get You a Woman.
Hello Its Me ❤
“Song for America” in my top 5 Kansas songs. Amazing band. Talent across the board. Boys could jam. Definitely check out “Song For America”. Musical journey.
Ditto - Song for America is one of the most underrated songs EVER!
Thank you!!!! Kansas is still my all time favorite. You gotta do "The Wall", "Born on Wings of Steel" such amazing music!!!
In addition to all the other great Kansas suggestions, I'd like to add on "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)" and "The Pinnacle." Both are great songs!
"If I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don't know" is taken from Plato's "Apology."

Love Kansas! Will always have a soft spot for “Dust In The Wind” !!!
"Dust in the Wind," "The Wall," and "Point of No Return."
Love the wall.
Kansas, “Point of Know Return”, “Dust in the Wind”
Know Return
Two very good choices.

I fixed it, thanks! 😊
Indeed, Dust in the wind is one of those songs he will know for sure and appreciate hearing in its totality.

The best Kansas song that few would request, "Fight Fire With Fire "
I agree with all the other requests also. More Kansas!!!
I love that song.
No John Elefante song is the best Kansas song. Not even close.
Great song, just grinds the whole way through
This is the theme song for my fave show Supernatural. The guy who reacts to the episodes of the show calls himself Wayward Winchester. Thanks Kansas💝💝💝
Of all the different genres of music I enjoy, this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Kansas were such a brilliant band and sadly under rated....
"Dust in the wind" by Kansas. It's spiritual.
Please play Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” “Jungle Love,” “The Joker,” “Rockin Me,” Swing Town,” “Abbracadabra,” and more! Thanks
Yes! Steve Miller!
Oh yeah, fly like an Eagle for sure!
I'll toss on "True Fine Love," "The Stake" and "Living In The USA" on that pile for sure!
YESSSSSSSSSSS
Gotta love Steve Miller band
When I saw Kansas in Atlanta, Steve Young had six keyboards, a Wurlitzer organ and a Hammond B3. Kerry Livgren had three keyboards in front of him, and he played guitar. I saw Steve play standing on his hands. Incredible.
THIS was My Favorite Band of the late 70s early 80s. So glad you reviewed them! I loved their story telling lyrics, harmonies, complicated time changes. Like the band Yes, and of course, Rush which you have done great reviews!
Dust in the wind one of the greatest songs they ever did

I So love that you play music from my time ❣️❣️❣️ I am 61 years old and these songs bring back So Many Wonderful memories 🥰🥰🥰
This is how old I am..Saw Kansas in concert back in the late 70's. Back when there wasn't a lot of flash and bang to concerts. Whenever I listen to them I have my concert flashbacks..
Me too, saw them many times back in the 70s. I still have all their albums. Great memories of their shows.
I saw this band three years ago at a local college. Best money I ever spent on a concert ticket.
Me too!
I saw them in STL when this album came out with Starcastle. Marque is a great album.
yeah, old school musicians had talent, oh the good old days
Honor to say I lived that era 56 and still loving all those tunes
I can’t like this comment enough. Yes!!! So much talent in the music of the 70’s and 80’s. Lyrics are carefully crafted (for the most part) and filled with meaning. The skill of the musicians and singer - 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!
Another great artist, Cat Stevens singing Morning has Broken. So good! You’ll love it.
It proved to be prophetic."
This song can be seen as the continuation of the last song of Kansas' previous album Masque. As stated in the last verse of "The Pinnacle":
I stood where no man goes
Above the din I rose
Life is amusing though we are losing
Drowned in tears of awe
By definition in the Cambridge dictionary, "din" is a loud, unpleasant, confused noise which lasts for a long time. The first line of "Carry On Wayward Son" is: "Once I rose above the noise and confusion." >>
This was the group's first major hit, and like their next one, "Dust In The Wind," it was a last minute addition to the album.
Poetic
Philisophical and prophetic
Let's not forget the unofficial theme song for Supernatural!!!
I live in Kansas and most of the band was from topeka
Heroes! That's the name of the movie that I saw when I was little! Ten years old, apparently. I still remember how it made me feel.
I never knew any of that, even though I've heard this song so many times. Now I'm glad I do :)
Yes I remember having my 33s and 45s. Those were the days

Also, as long as I’m asking, there is a great live version of Point of Know Return. You will want to see what these cats look like!
Lovin music from the good old days !

"Dust in the wind" is another song by Kansas you must react to
Dust. Wind. Dude......
R.I.P. Robby Steinhardt. I saw Kansas twice in concert some time ago and they were amazing both times. What incredible talent!
Some other Kansas songs to consider: "Dust in the Wind", "What's on my Mind", "Hold On", "The Wall"
I love What's on My Mind! My favorite by them!
"Dust in the wind" was their best imho. Underrated progressive rock bank. Christian band also, I think.
Point of No Return was real big and Dust In The Wind, really big also.
"Song for America" is a must. An odyssey of pure musical ecstasy with a message.
Aperçu, Icarus, The Pinnacle, Closet Chronicles, and No One Together.
"Y'all know how I feel about that church organ!" Yup. We do. Keep up the good work, Jamel. Love your channel.

I remember seeing them back up Aerosmith before they we're big! Best opening act I've ever seen!
Supernatural theme song!! Can't help but think of Sam and Dean!!
Amen bro. Many years ago I saw John Elefante. And many of these songs were like worship songs.
Back in the day I seen AD live in Syracuse, circa 85, great show
It’s actually about Vietnam and the soldiers searching for peace from their PTSD. The band told this to the crowd at a concert in LA I attended.
Kerry Livgren wrote this song totally on his own and it's about his spiritual journey through many and varied religions...he finally became a Christian around 1980..( it's all In his book 'seeds of change'...) Incredible songwriter/poet
If you can find the documentary “Miracle out of nowhere” check it out. Great documentary about how they became the biggest band in the world for a short time. Aerosmith and Queen opened for the in stadiums with 80K+.

Interesting story on this song...they almost had the album finished but needed one more song...Kerry Livgren went home and wrote this whole song in one night...ended up being their biggest hit before Dust in the Wind.
"Closet Chronicles". Great Lyrics and an overall fantastic song and you'll like the keyboards in it.
