My grandmother got me started on this, she was making the starter and sharing it ,and gave Mom and I some from her freezer. I later did the 10 day from her recipe,I just made the bread which started with one cup starter, two cups self rising flour, one cup sugar, 1 half cup milk, 1 cup oil, 2 teaspoons cinnamon,2 packages vanilla pudding, pecans. Mix well, grease 2 loaf pans and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, fill and, bake at 325 degrees for one hour ,check at 45. Sprinkle with more cinnamon sugar, enjoy warm with butter, or cold!! Love y'all from Ky. I'll get one started soon.

Love this video! Stress ages! I found disconnecting from the TV, removed a lot of my stress. Their ‘programming” was taking a toll on my health. I cancelled my cable and also Alexia! Tired of having all our conversations listed too! I use to keep the TV on for background sound, found silence is sooo much better! ‘ ‘

Marys nest explains it best and WITHOUT a yeast start. IF you can't get yeast Marys Nest is the go to girl. Quite frankly I don't understand why you would make this using yeast. The whole idea is to create your own.

This reminds me of the last time I had a friendship bread starter. It was given to me by my friend Lois and it was an active so-and-so! I had it in a gallon Ziploc bag on the counter and every morning I'd give it a quick massage and it bubbled like crazy. After a few days, I got up one morning and it wasn't there? What the heck? I was staring dumbfounded at the empty spot, thinking surely no one would break in and steal friendship bread starter. Well, that thing had gotten so lively that it bubbled itself off the edge of the counter and across the floor. 😂 After that, I took to making it in a bowl!

You’ll be so surprised, or maybe you already know! I ordered one the cookbooks from Baddour Center, but I didn’t hear from them so I thought maybe my order hadn’t gone through so I emailed them. I got an email immediately back from them, nothing was wrong with my order, they had received it. BUT, they usually only get one or two book orders a month! But thanks to you and your video they got 550 orders in less than a week!! They had to order more shipping supplies and feel very blessed because of you!! How exciting this is, and how blessed we are too have been a part of your blessing to them!!

Mrs Lori, thank you so very much for sharing this Amish Friendship Bread Starter recipe! I actually went to the site I saw on your paper copy and there it was! I can't wait to try all these wonderful new recipes with my starter! I just happen to have 2 loaves of yeast bread in my oven right now, how about that?! (Not made with this starter though, can't wait to try it out!) I just had a thought. I have a laminator, I think I will laminate this copy I printed off so that I can make marks over and over again. Just wipe them off when I'm done, that way this copy is cleared off for the next time I need to use it!

Oh Miss Lori. Back in the day I made this by huge batches. I had so many different flavors of friendship bread in my freezer I ran out of space. Then there was the bags of starter that I gave to family, neighbors, co-workers and friends. When people seen me coming to their doors carrying a bag of starter they ran and locked the doors and shut the windows. There is just so many people you can share this with before you run out of people. I ended up putting some of the starter batter down my kitchen sink as live yeast is good for your septic tank. As good as the end product is great tasting, it grows faster then 2 people can consume.

I've done that. It's a whipping. I make a 50/50 whole wheat sourdough starter in ~10 days then keep the levain in the refrigerator to use for baking. I only feed it once a week and boost the discard to bake bread with or use the straight discard for crackers or pancakes. When I get tired of it I throw it out and make another when I want sourdough. After a couple months with the Amish friendship starter my "friends" wouldn't answer their phone when I had discard to share. ☺

Ms.Lori if the bentonite does not work...try what we did long ago. Put some hay in the muddy bottom ...then turn some cows in to do their thing.
After feeding them in the hole for two or three days, send them hoe...unless they belong to you. Their walking, running, stomping about will help to seal up any leaks. Then hopefully your tank/ pond will hold water. If it drains again, feed the cows again.

Ms. Lori, I use to put all my handwritten recipes in the back of my 1965 Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook. So many were lost over the years. I now use a 3 ring binder and plastic sheet protectors. I like protectors opening on the side of the 3 rings. This way your papers won't fall out. You can also buy protectors devided with 3 or 4 pockets that you can put index cards in.
If you have 2 sided recipes just don't put another sheet in the back side. This way you don't have to remove it out of the protector. If it's actual 2 sheets of paper I put the 1st sheet on the backside of the protector and the 2nd sheet directly across on the front side of the next protector. The other great thing about the protectors is if you spill something on it, just wipe it off. I also put dividers and label them for different categories of recipes. No more flipping through stacks of recipes to find the one you want.
Have a blessed day, stay safe and healthy 🙏🥰👍👌🙏🦅🔔🗽🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🥰🇺🇸🙏

We are in Arkansas, too, and when we had our pond dug, it did the same exact thing as yours. It would nearly get full, then seep nearly out. My husband and I went and bought many bags of Bentonite and scattered it on ours (the main part in front of the dam). I wish we could have done it all over when there was no water in there and no trees yet, but at the time, we didn't have the means to do more than we did. But even the many bags we scattered on the deepest area of the pond worked enough that our pond has never completely dried up even in the worst droughts. We are still sad that ours didn't hold like it was supposed to, because it would be a pretty big one today if it had. Even though it ended up going up and down (still does) we are grateful that we have been able to keep fish in it. We do know the feeling of disappointment, though! We worked really hard getting as much Bentonite on there as we did. If you can, do it in the beginning. Now, if we wanted to put a "liner" in it, we would have to hire someone with a bulldozer and take out a whole bunch of trees again in the larger part of the area where water was supposed to be. I do think it is starting to hold a bit better than it did at first, though. Too bad we can't run a herd of cows in ours for a couple of years...that would "stop it up." LOL.

We dug a pond on the the big farm,
      Years ago
Took three years before it would hold
May have to put hogs in it a while to seal it up
      Thank you, my Arkansas friend!

@@WhippoorwillHoller No problem. Love the idea of this starter, too! I don't know how you have the energy to work and keep up with things on the homestead, but the fact that you do is definitely an inspiration! We find ourselves saying, "Well, Ms. Lori and Mr. Brown are still doing this...if we push ourselves, we can do 'this-or-that' too!"

My MawMaw used to have a bread starter. She always made loaves of bread and cinnamon rolls. But hers, you had to feed it instant potatoes. She passed several years ago, but I sure miss that bread. Her house smelled heavenly when she made this bread.

I had no idea you could do so much more with the starter!! I lost my recipe so I was so glad to see this post!! Can’t wait to try it again! I also can’t wait to try some of the other recipes from the starter! Starting my start now!

Oh Miss Lori. I just adore the Amish people. I had an Amish mom❤️. I miss her. I’ve made granola bars, peanut butter cookies and the most delicious pancakes. They’re pretty heavy. I’ve made so many of them. Try lemon, coconut, cranberry and walnut with almond flavoring. It’s my favorite bread. How I wish we were collaborating on this Amish Starter!! Lord bless. Darlene from Souper at 60. 🇺🇸❤️

Hi Miss Lori! One of my friends dropped off a starter for me about a year ago- left on doorstep right after corona virus was out. 😞 I put it in the freezer cuz I already had bread-making going on up to my ears. I just checked and it’s still there! I know it’s dormant from the cold. I’m tempted to toss it and start over from scratch with you & this recipe.
I thought sure you’d have water in that pond by now! Looking forward to seeing what you’ve got to do for it. 🤗
    God Bless Whippoorwill Holler!

I’ve been making this for over 20 years, and I always keep a ziploc bag (double wrapped), of starter in my freezer. Never had a problem with freezing the starter, then defrosting. The day I take it out of the freezer is Day 0. Delicious!

Just my luck! You show up with this delicious recipe the same day I start on a keto diet. I'll hang on to it for when the day comes that I fall off the keto wagon and just have to have some fresh baked bread. LOL
I still want to try it now though. If I wait a week before starting the process, it would be ready just in time for Easter gifts. It would be nice to print out the recipe, maybe make a small loaf of bread and some honey butter, and tuck the starter and everything in a small basket for a special gift. I'll have to think on that idea.
Thank you for sharing and, as always, may God bless you and keep you in good health.

I'm also going to try the riced cauliflower and see how that tastes. I'm not a big fan of cauliflower but I think bacon and butter can make just about anything taste good. I will have to see how many of your recipes I can convert.

Hi Lori, I'm just saying that I've been making The Amish Friendship Bread for a long time. After I separate the rest, I put my 1 cup mixed with 1cup vegetable oil, 1/2 cup milk, 1 cup sugar, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 vanilla extract, 1 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 cups all-purpose flour & 1 Large box instant pudding
    (Chocolate or Vanilla).
Mix well. Grease 2 Loaf Pans. Mix an additional 1/2 cup sugar & 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Dust the greased pans with the cinnamon mixture. Pour the batter equally in the 2 pans. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon mixture over the top. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees. Cool until bread loosens evenly from the sides. (approx. 10 min.) Turn into serving dish or wrap it up in some foil like I do. Enjoy... 👍😊😊🍞🍞
You should try it that way, it is good. Nice & moist. Nice flavor too. I also put in raisins.

I have had my starter for about six months now! It's sooo easy. What it doesn't say is your starter should be active when you bake with it. I have learned by default. I made rolls with mine, and they were very dense. I made it another time and it worked! I waited for the bubbles to form in my starter and it made my rolls so light and airy!!! Just a tip I've learned along the way!!! Also, I substitute a half a cup of the starter for one egg and make my cookies, any cookies, and they are so moist and delicious!!🙂

I just wanted to say thank you for your channel. I’ve been watching for about a year now. I’m currently retired and was working, giving singing lessons on a part-time basis to make my ends meet, when COVID hit. I’m no longer able too due to social distancing etc. You and Mr. Brown have kept me sane with your wonderful stories that reminded me of the old ways I was brought up. I want you to know It’s appreciated as I live alone and was not able to visit family from March until May of last year. After the second wave began, and in code Red since October 30th, we were not able to have Christmas gatherings, no birthday get togethers etc. Our province is finally lifting some of our restrictions now. Yay! Thankfully we were able to visit through Messenger, or what I call “window visits” where I would bake or cook something delicious for my kids, drop it off and visit them through their window. I had messaged you before explaining our very cold temperatures, sometimes lower than -22 Fahrenheit (Winnipeg, Canada) which makes this sometimes difficult.
Anyway, sorry for the rant! Just saying thank you and bless your hearts ♥️

I have been making Amish Friendship Bread for the better part of 40 years & I love it! The basic original recipe is still one of my favorite ways to have it. I also love playing with the recipe myself, inventing new breads. One example is I will swap out vanilla pudding for butterscotch, omit the cinnamon, and add bits of crushed up Heath Bars to it! YUM! Another way we like it is with small peice of apples and walnuts added to the basic recipe! It is fun to play with the basic recipe, especially when you don't have enough people that will actually use the starter! ( but they sure will eat the finished product, just like in Henny Penny) Oh yeah by the way, pistachio pudding goes great in with the zuchinni bread recipe. Chocolate pudding & coconut LOL... I will stop now, but hope it sparks others to play around with flavors they like!
