I was just about to pick up the FX9 when I just happened to run across a video review of the Extar. I took a chance and ended up getting the Extar and couldn't be happier. It's a ton cheaper and a bunch lighter than the FX9. I've run about 1,500 rounds through the Extar without any issues of any kind. Mine has a $40.00 Dagger Defense DDHQ red dot from Amazon on it. For under $500.00, I've got a lightweight, accurate and dependable firearm with an optic that runs off of Glock happy sticks. This one's a keeper...
there's really no such thing as an "accurate" $40 red dot lol.... they hold zero about as well as an 8 week old puppy holds it piss.... but hey..... I only know because I've bought a few myself so... I'm not judging lol
The Extar Ep9 has a internal recoil dampening system that makes the gun shoot alot faster and recoil alot lighter than the Fx9 this feature is similar to the Mp5's roller delayed blow back system and the CMMG Gaurd's radial delayed blow back system....alot of higher priced priced Ar 9's and PCC's lack a feature like that. And that makes it superior to me
Indeed and for $420 it's insane that they offer this feature~ I have a CMMG Guard 9 and I paid quite a lot more money!!! But that my PCC competition rifle :) this would be good to have in a trunk/truck just in case if shits hit the fan, cheap, inexpensive, reliable, recoil dampening system and $400!!! C'mon now!~ I'm getting one soon~ Sadly, they sell out rather quickly!
Range time aside (since this was merely a static comparison), between the two I think the most significant factor will be the price difference. But if price was not a factor I'd go for the FX due to ergonomics, cool factor, and construction materials.

I could see where the barrel length could matter. I'd like to know the difference in bullet velocity from each of them. If the FX9 has a little more velocity, then it can reach a little further. If someone might need that reach, then maybe the FX9 has an advantage. On the other hand, the EP9 might be less prone to over-expansion on close shots. I'm skeptical whether over-expansion is really a problem, particularly if someone is using 147 grain JHP bullets. I think they'd penetrate enough even if they expand quite a bit from a high velocity. If I were able to get either, I'd probably get the EP9 just to save money.
Option for the FX-9 - get a law tactical folder and install regular AR brace into it, such as SBA3 or SBA4. It is just a 9mm AR pistol with all options available for it. I do not know whether it is possible on the Extar
The problem is guys you cannot find the extar ep9 anywhere. I’ve been waiting for several months and it’s still on back order. They just are producing enough of them and I don’t want to wait six+ months to get a pistol. I’ve emailed the manufacture twice and they keep giving me the same copy paste response that they cannot even give me a projection on when they will have stock. So yeah it might be a cheaper done but good luck trying to find one.

The FX-9 does get a bonus for me in it has a metal construction and they are available for purchase locally so I can actually put my hands on em. The Extar isn't, unfortunately. I'd like to at least handle the gun if not be able to fire it before I buy.
Things I would have liked you to cover in a review like this would include the different types of ammo that was shot through each. Which types of ammo had feeding issuues, if any. Just my two cents, as of now it’s literally impossible to get a hold of of the extar. To me if a company has trouble restocking its product to keep up with the demand it’s not a company I would want. They probably take forever on their service as well. As of 2021 I would still prefer a gun like the freedom ordnance fx-9. Company keeps it stocked, good customer service. Shoots great

How does the PSA Gen 4 compare to the FX9? I’m trying to decide between the two. FX9’s volt stays open on last round and has a feed ramp. PSA Gen 4 doesn’t have those features.

Is there a noticeable difference in shoot ability between the two. Disregarding price which is the easier to shoot, is flatter shooting or less recoil. Thanks for your time.
muzzle device on the FX9 is a little better from sound and flash perspective than open brake on the Extar. Extar runs fine with any Glock compatible mags (including those korean drums), FX9 a little more picky. Recoil - I did not notice much difference, Extar does give a little bit more thump than FX9. For feelings, the softer rubber on Extar feels very good, a little better than KAK brace on FX9.
No issues other than with some magazines. I don't know why but Extar goes to the range more often. However, I recently upgraded the FX 9 so might take it out soon as well
I chose the extar for 2 reasons. It is about $200 cheaper, and there is a review by a guy named Riley Refuerzo here on you tube, at 8,000 rds. He says he has had no problems. I haven't had any with mine, either. Can't speak for anyone else, but for a casual shooter, that was one hell of an endorsement for me. Jus' sayin'.
Just a throw in, but... Thought about throwing a red dot or scope on mine, but went with iron sights. Put a detachable A2 carry handle for the rear and a plain jane flip up for the front. I'm good out to 50 yds, which is really all I was looking for from this. I bought with home defense in mind. Lightweight, accurate, reliable, maneuverable. What else do you need? Remembered that old axiom.... KISS it. Keep It Simple Stupid. Iron sights don't need batteries. Happy shootin', brothers.
@@PracticalWeapons actually not too bad. I live in a rural area, without a lot of ambient light. So, at night, it gets pretty dark. I have a mercury vapor light on the front of the house, so I can see well outside, and my outbuildings are all out front 30-40 yards from the house. The layout of my house is open from the living room, into the dining room, and kitchen, so I put night lights in those rooms so if I look out from my room in the night, I can see fairly well into all of those rooms. I keep a light on in my room, just so I don't run into anything. But I can turn it off, so if I need to look out, anyone in those rooms will be visible. Plus... I've been considering putting a light on my Ep9.
@@PracticalWeapons Will do. Right now I'm leaning (heavily) toward the FX-9, but I'm keeping an open mind. There's always the money factor to consider...damn!
@@jamesallen5591 I am preparing a video reviewing 9mm carbine / large format pistols on US market - probably within next 2 weeks. The market niche is very interesting and not quite saturated yet. Personally thinking Scorpion and Stribog are nice options, but they are higher priced too, money wise Extar and Ruger PC are lowest end, and HK and B&T types are at the other side. Sorry - response from my russian language channel account, too lazy to switch :)
on EP9 it is possible to remove any of the rails on the handguard - they are all attached the same way - 3 bolts from inside. However, there is no other type handguard for replacement...
Extar USA wow a company that is following customer questions and experiences and giving input to what the consumers want or are wondering. Sig and Glock could learn a lesson from you guys lol 👍🏻 keep up the good work.
Extar USA I know this isn’t an official thread or way to reach you all, but while I have your attention, is there any way to make a more sleek handrail that uses m-lock slots and a buffer adapter to accommodate the SBA3 brace. If you were able to offer these options from the factory for about $100 more this pistol would absolutely blow all the competition out of the water. Those are the only 2 reasons people are considering other 9mm market options for under $1000. Maybe food for thought when you’re designing the 2.0
@Extar USA - THANK YOU SO MUCH! Highly appreciated answer - and I will not be changing the pin. I join the question about the hand guard. Though for my large hands the current one fits very well, having a MLok slim one as an option could be interesting for some owners.
it is very proprietary. and large. However it is very easy to remove, and if you do not want to install any accessories, all those rails can be taken off. I am actually installing all 4 rail panels on mine.
@@PracticalWeapons well I appreciate your reply...I hope they do,because that will be the biggest reason for not buying this firearm (for me anyway), plus wish they made longer barrels as well
Thanks for this comparison video. Well done! And, your English is impeccable, thoroughly infused with appropriate Americanisms. :) I am a Vietnam combat veteran (WIA); door gunner. What is, ultimately, most important to me is reliability and accuracy. Have you done a side-by-side comparison between these two weapons regarding accuracy and reliability? Again, thank you.
,,I have taken both to the range, but cannot call a few hundred rounds a real test. So far ep9' has been more enjoyable than fx9 but that !ight change when I install a new brace and optics there.
True. Mine is one of the first few hundred, with serial number under 400... It is a very popular gun due to the price. It was available today, but seems to be out of stock. I would fill out the FFL form, maybe in 2 weeks it will be in stock and ship
It was my own gift to myself using a lot of gift certificates, to be honest. But it fits AR-9 concept a lot more than EP9 - so I justified it that way. All kinds of accessories, etc.
That is the only reason I can think of...Recoil is more than manageable on both pistols. Another possible factor is that EP9 comes with muzzle break vs FX9 "muzzle enhancer"
A little more, but very comparable. Plus rubber brace on EP9 vs harder KAK brace might make it feel as if it was more. I personally am used to KAK braces (own more than one), but in comparison to SBT rubber they provide more feeling
the sub2k is all plastic as well and even has some plastic internals the extar had metal internals where it matters the hammer is plastic but with a metal strike face and can be switched out for a metal ar15 hammer if need be and for the price it cant be beat there is a video on YT of this guy who shot 8000 rounds out of his extar and still works fine.ill probably get a extar it works and its less expensive
Sub2K is not really comparable to EP-9 - different niche and quality levels. I do believe there is nothing that can compare to EP-9 in the close to $400 price range, other than Ruger PC-9 - but it is a rifle. Which I recently purchased :)
Depends on where you live and caliber of your choice for home defense. The biggest factor from my POV is availability of defensive-type ammunition. Those are available in many calibers...
Rowdy Roddy , for home defense the pistol caliber is a better choice. Using personal defense ammo (jacketed hollow point) is safer for others in the house and your neighbors due to the fact it will limit over penetration. The smaller and lighter pistol will be much easier to maneuver in close quarters and it won’t be as deafening as a rifle cartridge indoors. Add to that, you can easily mount a light and a red dot optic on the pistol and you can see how the AK is a better firearm for purposes other than home defense.
I like it too - but wonder if there is a way to change their brace for SBA3... Though they could really improve the gun by changing to a different handguard, or at least having that option. Still fighting light mount...

Before recommending one firearm over another you really need to consider reliability and accuracy with a variety of common ammunition types. How well each forearm uses different brands of magazines is also important.
FX9 would be an ideal choice due to being an AR platform base carbine so if you're used to the control features of a standard 5.56/223 AR the FX9 would be best suited for that. Sure a bit more money but at the end, higher quality! Also, the FX9 has a longer barrel, which aids in better accuracy, better velocity too. EX9 is a nice platform too~ If you're gonna cry about the weight than your a big puss puss~ Neglible weight difference :) Both have their place for sure~
@@TexZenMaster I have that on my AK pistol... Was thinking about it for EP9... so many choices. It changes the grip and I would have to change the light mount as well. Might make a video comparing AFGs on EP9 separately.
@@PracticalWeapons I subbed and will watch for that video. I had an unorthodox flashlight mounting for the EP9 (copied from another thread): Elzetta Alpha with High/Low tailcap and standard bezel, attached to the left side of the upper rail (touching both handguard and rail with bezel even with end of handguard) using 3M double sided tape (to attach and protect gun finish) in between the flashlight and gun surface, and 3 high-temp zip ties (whose dimensions match the slot width of the upper rail) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01018DC96/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This is immovable, holds close to the gun, cheap, and easy to reach from an AFG (Stark SE-5 best AFG for this) I like the high/Low tailcap on the Elzetta because you never know how long you'll need to run it and 50 hours at 15 lumens is more than enough light for indoor use. You can also set it to high-beam temporarily with a tailcap press. The guys at my local gun shop called this attachment and combination "Ingenious"

TLDR: FX9 looks better, cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing. More modular AR interchangeable parts. AR style manual of arms Build Quality EX9 is cheaper, lighter and similar but also a budget baller. Fx9 is a little more expensive but i promise you, after hours of research, the fx9 seems to edge it out. bought the Fx9 brand new with a red dot, 5 mags for 600$ off classic firearms. find a better deal. ill wait.
Me too. My russian family says the same. I came to USA a looong time ago, so it is almost fake - mix of Arkansas, New Jersey and Florida now on top of Russian. I have to emphasize the accent sometimes.
The weight difference is larger in reality if you us the same "solid" brace on both. The EP-9 has a more refined and reduced recoil system allowing it to flat or less muzzle jump when firing. The shorter take-up and reset on the EP-9 will allow faster firing, and running as a "bump like" trigger. The EP-9 plastic upper and bolt will be more wear and contamination resistant and with less friction than the FX-9 Further the EP-9 has a side charging handle, this is very important as a) allows charging while "braced against the shoulder", the FX std AR system does not; b) more sub-machine gun like, and less unhandy for racking in a hurry, a real positive; c) fewer parts and simpler is more reliable, but; d) the side handle charger does allow more contamination into the action, however being a plastic action the EP-9 has superior resistance to wear from abrasive contamination. The rail extension on the EP-9 is superior to the FX-9 separate hand guard rail for retaining zero. The advantage of a rugged or less finished look of the EP-9 over the FX-9 will hold up better over time, but the FX-9 will be an easier sale. Overall the EP-9 is far superior.

I haven't had any with mine, either. Can't speak for anyone else, but for a casual shooter, that was one hell of an endorsement for me. Jus' sayin'.
No issues with mine either, and it does see the range more often than the FX9 so far.
@@thomasmerriett4288 how well would that work in low light? I usually add irons to a red dot, but on EP9 going with 1x prism
As an extar ep9 owner. The entire gun market would benefit if every company had the same “value for the money” ratio as Extar.
I wonder what the new version is going to be next month
@@PracticalWeapons are they releasing a new firearm?
@@visionofcomplexity got an email announcement but no detailsyet,
@@PracticalWeapons well that’s exciting
New model has been released, I am thinking whether I want to buy it. Currently no space in my gun safe though
The Extar EP9 is my choice for sure.
Will the Extar take an adjustable brace on its buffer tube?
Not one that requires different buffer tube.
Good! I'm in the market for something like these; let's see which is the best for me!
Let us know what you decide and obtain and how you like it. Enjoy the process. FYI, since the time of the video FO created smaller FX-9 pistol as well
@@PracticalWeapons Will do.
@@RuBearUSA No worries. I'll check out your video once it's posted!
Can you remove the bottom hand guard pic rail? Can you change out the front hand guard?
on EP9 it is possible to remove any of the rails on the handguard - they are all attached the same way - 3 bolts from inside. However, there is no other type handguard for replacement...
The ep9 is great! Among my favorites. Recommended changes...... trigger, safety, rear takedown pin
is it a regular takedown pin? I also just bought additional rail kit from EXTAR
@@PracticalWeapons does the rail kit come with 1 or 2 rails?
I just cant get past that handguard on the extar
it is very proprietary. and large. However it is very easy to remove, and if you do not want to install any accessories, all those rails can be taken off. I am actually installing all 4 rail panels on mine.
@@PracticalWeapons can you install a different handguard?...I prefer the style of handguard on the FXP
I doubt it... it feels to be extremely proprietary. Maybe if the company rep reads this comment they can advise (happened before :)).
@@PracticalWeapons well I appreciate your reply...I hope they do,because that will be the biggest reason for not buying this firearm (for me anyway), plus wish they made longer barrels as well
Can you swap the ex-9 pistol brace out for others?
This is an SB Tactical SOB brace, thus compatible braces will work. You will not be able to install a brace that requires a different buffer tube.
Thanks for this comparison video. Well done! And, your English is impeccable, thoroughly infused with appropriate Americanisms. :)
I am a Vietnam combat veteran (WIA); door gunner.
How can you do a comparison when you have different optics?
By comparing features other than accuracy or optics
I've been trying to get an extar for 2 months now, they never have them on the website!
True. Mine is one of the first few hundred, with serial number under 400... It is a very popular gun due to the price. It was available today, but seems to be out of stock. I would fill out the FFL form, maybe in 2 weeks it will be in stock and ship
They were available tonight and I picked up one. They list them at the end of the business day, 4pm Arizona time, and they only last 10 to 15 minutes.
no surprise there. I actually thought of getting a second one, but decided to leave it for those that have none.
The EP9 is now available for order on the site.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6pm Central time they put inventory up for sale. Bought mine last week. Waiting for them to ship it.
Thank you. Man, the FX9 looks so nice but I can't convince myself it's worth $230 more than the EP9!!
It was my own gift to myself using a lot of gift certificates, to be honest. But it fits AR-9 concept a lot more than EP9 - so I justified it that way. All kinds of accessories, etc.
@@PracticalWeapons does the fx9 have heavier recoil because of the blowback action? I know Extar has the "recoil damping system"
That is the only reason I can think of...Recoil is more than manageable on both pistols. Another possible factor is that EP9 comes with muzzle break vs FX9 "muzzle enhancer"
@@PracticalWeaponsoh ok, I meant does the fx9 have more recoil than the ep9?
A little more, but very comparable. Plus rubber brace on EP9 vs harder KAK brace might make it feel as if it was more. I personally am used to KAK braces (own more than one), but in comparison to SBT rubber they provide more feeling
on the ep9 is the brace length adjustable?
Not the default one... You have to install a different model
the sub2k is all plastic as well and even has some plastic internals the extar had metal internals where it matters the hammer is plastic but with a metal strike face and can be switched out for a metal ar15 hammer if need be and for the price it cant be beat there is a video on YT of this guy who shot 8000 rounds out of his extar and still works fine.ill probably get a extar it works and its less expensive
Sub2K is not really comparable to EP-9 - different niche and quality levels. I do believe there is nothing that can compare to EP-9 in the close to $400 price range, other than Ruger PC-9 - but it is a rifle. Which I recently purchased :)
@@PracticalWeapons those PC 9s are way heavier than they need to be
Should I get this or an ak for home defense?
Depends on where you live and caliber of your choice for home defense. The biggest factor from my POV is availability of defensive-type ammunition. Those are available in many calibers...
@mrbrainchild76 believe it or not, my glock 19 is louder than my AKM247 in a closed space.
*Extar was my choice. When I go to the range people always ask what it is. They freak out when I tell them the price. XD*
I like it too - but wonder if there is a way to change their brace for SBA3... Though they could really improve the gun by changing to a different handguard, or at least having that option. Still fighting light mount...
Reply from the Extar - SBA3 is not possible due to proprietary buffer tube... but there are other models of braces from SB that can be installed.
No detectible Arkansas accent...How did you acquire the amount you have?...I'm from Arkansas and you look sorta familiar but don't sound familiar...Oh yeah, I plan to get the Ex9...
Lol, spent 91-97 in between Little Rock and Fayeteville, with some trips to Pine Bluff. Went to UOA and UALR. Oktoberfests in AR were great :). Backyard burgers are still the best fast food joint I have been to
@@PracticalWeapons I was in Fayetteville at UofA 70-74...Good burgers...Sorry about you having to spend time in Pine Bluff...Not my favorite part of Arkansas...Any hiking in the Ozarks?....
We had friends with 10K akres of forest near PB. Ozarks - not that much hiking - a little too far. UofA changed a lot since 70s, but those hills stayed :)
@@PracticalWeapons I'd like to live in the hills up there but live on a ridge of the Arkansas River Valley...I get to see the nuclear plant quite well driving but not from my house...Now the rural area outside of PB is just fine I think...Of course, I prefer a forested area...
Fx9
Good vid man
Thanks
You do know FX-9 takes glock mags right?
Considering I made a special video on fx9 and different glock.mag compatibility, what do you think?
Anybody know if there's a different handguard available for the extar?
So far as I know, none
I really want to hear you sign off with "have nice day". It seems fitting. :-) Thanks for the vid!
His was a fake accent.. and actually different from real Russian one.
@@PracticalWeapons Yeah I know, but it would be pretty funny for a REAL Russian to do it, since Kyle made it so famous
@@tjwright makes sense
Does anyone know if the safety can be reversed on the Extar EP9 or is there another solution for us lefties?
I will ask the manufacturer
I received an answer that it cannot. However, they did mention installing third party trigger and safety as an option
I agree the extar would make a great tree house gun
Giggle giggle!
Before recommending one firearm over another you really need to consider reliability and accuracy with a variety of common ammunition types. How well each forearm uses different brands of magazines is also important.
Accuracy depends too much on the shooters individual skill, but reliability can be gained from testing with common ammo
What do you think of the Stribog?
Considering purchase of one. Sounds like it would be good competition to scorpion
Good comparison
That's an EXTAR EP9, not an "EX9". 😉
EX9 is a nice platform too~ If you're gonna cry about the weight than your a big puss puss~ Neglible weight difference :) Both have their place for sure~
ergonomics on Extar gets way better with after market forgrip and still cheaper than the FX
what grip did you install? I still have only the figer stop.
@@PracticalWeapons The Stark SE-5 was the best AFG of all time for the Extar EP9
I had an unorthodox flashlight mounting for the EP9 (copied from another thread):
Elzetta Alpha with High/Low tailcap and standard bezel, attached to the left side of the upper rail (touching both handguard and rail with bezel even with end of handguard) using 3M double sided tape (to attach and protect gun finish) in between the flashlight and gun surface, and 3 high-temp zip ties (whose dimensions match the slot width of the upper rail) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01018DC96/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is immovable, holds close to the gun, cheap, and easy to reach from an AFG (Stark SE-5 best AFG for this) I like the high/Low tailcap on the Elzetta because you never know how long you'll need to run it and 50 hours at 15 lumens is more than enough light for indoor use. You can also set it to high-beam temporarily with a tailcap press. The guys at my local gun shop called this attachment and combination "Ingenious"
@@TexZenMaster Very interesting...
I love my FX9 the extra lacks bolt hold open and is Basically wall polymer. Still a good gun, I just like my fx9 more
Gude aafternoon. Love it. I feel like i was from mother Russia in a past life.
I have a mixture of Russian, French, Arkansas and New Jeusey accent. However, if you like ice cream in the cold, vodka with caviar, and meat and potatoes - your previous life WAS in Russia.
@@PracticalWeapons all but the vodka. I drank a tanker of it in my teens. Kamchatcka which I'm sure is misspelled. But gives me headache these days and I'm a whiskey, moreover scotch guy.
@@FearScherer Nice! Plus real vodka literally is not available in USA anyway
Definitely Ex9.😁
Next comparison might be scorpion Evo and something new
Youll get what you pay for, and who wants a plastic knife or hammer ?
very true. and sometimes you dont have to pay too much to get what we need :)
TLDR:
FX9 looks better, cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing.
More modular AR interchangeable parts.
AR style manual of arms
Build Quality
EX9 is cheaper, lighter and similar but also a budget baller.
Fx9 is a little more expensive but i promise you, after hours of research, the fx9 seems to edge it out. bought the Fx9 brand new with a red dot, 5 mags for 600$ off classic firearms. find a better deal. ill wait.
That is a very good deal for FX9, I remember they had it long time ago, but I was not ready yet.

I heard you had a fake Russian accent
Me too. My russian family says the same. I came to USA a looong time ago, so it is almost fake - mix of Arkansas, New Jersey and Florida now on top of Russian. I have to emphasize the accent sometimes.
Looks like an interesting video but I can't listen to that accent.
Sorry to hear that, I can remove the overemphasized accent. That was just for fun.
But you will have to listen to my Arkansas Drawl with Jersey mix :)
EP9 is ending on the range more often than fx9 so far
