Plein air Landscape Sketchbook Tour (#18, 2022) ✶ Completion of my A4 Seawhite Sketchbook

- I have completed my A4 Seawhite of Brighton sketchbook! I thought it would be great to take you on a tour through the plein air sketches and locations as the book reached completion.
I visited many varied locations (including Birmingham city centre!) in different weathers and thoroughly enjoyed myself! As ever - I have several sketchbooks on the go at the same time, all different shapes and sizes, which I take with me on my morning walks with Basil (one at a time though!).
Most of the sketches in this A4 landscape sketchbook were done using liquid charcoal but I also used watercolour and graphite pencils.

Love the Trenwheel (is that how it is spelled?) painting and the fences. What I enjoy is they you truly don’t set out to do masterpieces in your plein airs. You get color notes and composition and some of the drama and all the values in with such a short span of time and such vast weather conditions. Amazing. I have much respect for your work. Thanks for sharing so much of your heart in these. Your ease with it all sets me more at ease with what I have to learn. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Andrew, I must tell you that I really enjoy seeing your video vignettes of the actual sketch locations when you guide us through your sketchbook. I know it must take a while to edit, but the result is much appreciated! I also LOVE a good row of fenceposts-the more they lean, the better. One of the few manmade things I enjoy putting in a landscape painting. Thanks for another great video!

Lovely sketchbook tour Andrew. I especially like the one you described as bleak - the farm buildings on the horizon. Also love the use of loose scribbled marks to suggest scrubby undergrowth. However I do think you should have included Basil at least once, after all, you had exactly the right colours! Looking forward to the next one.

Wonderful sketchbooks! I find your free style very inspiring as I`m inclined to be too perfectionist in my art. It`s great how you can make such a simple subject into a great piece of art and with joy and freedom. I can`t wait to get out there!

I love your videos - your work has really grown on me over time. Do you spray your charcoal/graphite drawings with any fixative, for example after you get back to your studio? Your sketchbooks take a real beating.

No I don’t fix my sketches. I leave them as they are and they usually survive quite well 👍🏻
Your sketches are very good. What is liquid charcoal ? I want to try that media, too.
Thank you so much. Liquid charcoal is charcoal powder mixed with water and a little gum arabic (that's my homemade recipe anyway)

Hi Andrew, what is the benefit of liquid charcoal? It seems pretty pricey, so would regular stick charcoal do?
Hi there
Yes it’s a bit pricey unfortunately but you can make your own with charcoal powder and gum arabic with water. It’s nice to paint with and doesn’t require fixing like regular charcoal. I find it fun for sketching. I use it a lot and a pot has lasted for 6 months and there is still some left 😃
