  • As part of my current series of paintings based along the Fal River in Cornwall, I thought I would do some plein air oil painting at Restronguet Weir. I found a nice little beach to set up my easel and painted the view looking towards the village of Penpol.
The light was dull but it was very calm and a real pleasure to be painting at such a lovely location.
I did a follow up session on the canvas in the studio (which I filmed) to enhance the painting - let me know what you think!
    Colours used in the painting:
    Titanium White
    Lemon Yellow
    Magenta
    Cadmium Red
    Raw Sienna
    Raw Umber
    Ultramarine Blue
    Manganese Blue
    Ivory Black
I used a home made oil painting medium consisting of equal parts - Linseed Stand Oil, Turpentine and Damar Varnish. I painted onto a 14" x 10" canvas that was primed with a yellow alkyd oil paint.
Please ask any questions in the 'comments' section
Thanks for watching - bye for now

Really enjoyed your narrative as you went along, almost felt like I was painting it. Always good to hear the artist's mindset. Thank you.

Best video of all...Love the medium you used (same as I), French easel (same as mine), toned canvas (same) and looks like 16X12 (like me). Very wonderful piece too.

Thanks Michael. I enjoyed using the medium, I haven’t added Damar before but I have loads of it in the studio that needs using up (don’t often varnish paintings)
I’ll measure the canvas today but I think you’re right on the ball with that too!
      All the best 👍🏻

Love the video. Very informative regards the colours you mixed. Helps me with my colour process. I love the daily dose of Cornwall as I was brought up there. Now living Bondi, Australia. Keep them coming. 👏

Nice to see someone else using magenta, a colour I always have on my palette these days on plein air sessions.

Thank you. I love it! Started using it by accident really as I bought some second hand paints and magenta was part of the lot.
Now I use it instead of Alizarin crimson most of the time 😃

      @drawninwardart 2 года назад

@@AndrewBarrowmanArt - I use Alizarin Crimson mixed with Cerulean Blue and Ultramarine Blue to get intense purples of various hues so quite fond of that one too especially when sketching in watercolour. Tripped over the mix in the summer when out painting.

What a lovely, calming painting session. Love the location and watching people and dogs come and go too! You made a dull, grey winter day look beautiful as usual.. love the points of bright colour in the distance which attract the eye, the buoys and the boats which guide the eye across the painting. I have never seen cormorants (or was it a shag?) so close to the shore line looking for fish! And the obligatory lazy herring gull hoping to steal his catch! Really great thank you.

Thank you Jennie - I enjoyed including the people going about their leisure time (especially the canoe guy!)
I think it was a cormorant but was fairly small - couldn't miss the opportunity to include him either
      Have a great Christmas

Very attractive final result but no punch. Why ? Could it be overpainting ?

Many factors that viewers of the videos don’t see contribute to a plein air painting. I remember that day very well because someone reversed into my Land Rover half way through the painting ☹️

Beautiful area and v helpful. Useful to hear what you r thinking as u go along, what choices u r making. Like seeing brush marks up close. Can I ask a dumb question - why do u want the medium to slow drying when it is a quick sketch? Isn’t oil slow anyway. Or did I misunderstand the benefit of the damar. Thk you.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Good point about the damar varnish. I have lots of it in the studio and needed to find a way to use it as I don’t varnish paintings. I found a recipe for painting medium that contained it so thought I’d give it a try. I like how it makes the paint go sticky

Je ne sais toujours pas quel est ce médium que vous utilisez pour cette peinture . Lors de vos retouches dans votre atelier utilisez vous toujours le même médium et toujours dans les mêmes proportions ? Car il faut respecter la règle du gras sur maigre ?
