  • Hello everyone - today we are plein air oil painting in the evening light at Trelissick, Cornwall. This is a beautiful landscape and one I have returned to several times.
    I used a 10"x8" (25cm x 20cm approx) plywood panel on my Jullian French Easel. I used a couple of filberts, rounds and a rigger brush. I also used turpentine and a Michael Harding medium which is similar to the one I make myself (I prefer my own but have to use up this one!).
    Colours used - Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Naples Yellow, Cadmium Red, Magenta, Indian Red, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Violet, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ivory Black.
    Again I thank my daughter Madeleine, who helped me film this one.
    Please leave any questions in the 'Comments' section - I do my best to reply to everyone.
    Bye for now - Andrew

    Lovely, Andrew! And great job to Mads, you’re fortunate to have her along. Next time bring Basil to chase the birds off.

    Its always enjoyable to see you painting Andrew. Thanks for sharing this. You have picked a great time of day for the painting even though the colours and light change so fast. I haven't been out for a while but hopefully soon. All the best and take care mate!

    Lovely explanation and colour choices, thank you from Tasmania. This is early days into my foray into en plein air, I’m working faster and less fussing (over working)…I like your work with the reflections and boats. Beautiful location

    Really lovely, the orange on the trees brings that autumnal atmosphere and the little white boats make it zing. Love the birds and insects buzzing in the background.

    Cool colours recede, warm colours come foreward… except when they don’t! Love the sketch Andrew… especially your treatment of the foreground, which made the orange sing. Thanks for sharing. Mick. 😊

    Always take a pair of pliers with you, Andrew .... yes, you can rip the top of the tube off, but there is a trick to it: he said - covered in pthalo blue....

      I am my own worst enemy Robert 😅
      I used to take pliers but trimmed down my kit due to the weight of the easel and palette 🎨

    Always a joy to watch you work Andrew. I think adding the intense orange to the trees towards the end really lifted the painting. Surprised to see so many autumn colours in the Cornish countrside so early! I always struggle with all the green in the British countryside in summer, and feel I use green too much...maybe in one of your videos you could give us some tips on dealing with all that green!

      Thank you very much Steve. Autumn is coming early this year which could mean a long winter ahead ☹️
      I’ll see what I can do about a ‘green’ video 👍🏻

    Love this little painting with the warm, August colors ! Madeliene is adorable here and do love these videos with her. Super helpful and interesting to hear your thoughts as you paint!
    Q: I have plenty of horrible paintings that I’ve been painting over with thick paint to start again. I kind of like the texture. Should I be sanding them down instead?

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much Lisa
      You don’t have to sand off old paintings to paint over. This one was too green so I wanted to remove most of that 😃

    when the tube refuse to open heat the cap with a match and it comes off easily.

    I always love watching you paint and the explanation of your decisions with colour mixing. How do you normally prepare a wooden panel when you are not painting over an old painting? Do you have to use a sealant before using gesso?

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  11 месяцев назад

      Hi Pamela. Thank you very much 😃
      I would gesso a plywood panel before painting. I use traditional gesso but the acrylic primer is ok for the job if you’re in a hurry 👍🏻

    Hi Andrew ... I always find that painting over an old piece is a bit of a struggle to determine the correct values ... It seems the light was making all the colors similar except for the yellowish areas ...the blue water, sailboats and background turned out well ... Perhaps foreground could use a little more? Nice sketch overall ...

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  11 месяцев назад

      When I reviewed the video I realised it was the old painting that was hindering my colour mixing. I don’t normally struggle that much
