PLEIN AIR PAINTING : yellow field in the landscape

  • Hi there
    I went plein air painting at this location with the intention of painting the boats moored on the river near Mylor, Carrick Roads, Cornwall. On my arrival one thing was shouting 'Paint Me!' - a bright yellow rape seed field. I couldn't resist!
    My 40cm x 30cm panel could have done with being slightly wider to accommodate the width of the landscape so I made a few adjustments.
    Watch as I battle with the plein air landscape painting environment - changing light, tidal changes and pesky flies!
    Thank you for watching - please subscribe and give it the thumbs up if you enjoyed the video.
    Bye for now
    Andrew

    I myself love to enjoy plein air and adore those who paint plein air sketches. The sketch turned out very colorful. Thank you Andrew for the pleasure you have given me.

    Very nice to watch how a painting comes together in the end. To an onlooker, who does not know better (even myself😅), it may seem odd the random colouring in at the beginning, but once the layers are built up and detail added it finally becomes a work of art . Beautiful, thank you Andrew!

    What a complicated scene. I think I would have been tempted to pretend all the yachts were out at sea! It’s turned out beautifully Andrew. I never used to liked rape seed fields as they often look very acrid yellow, not quite natural somehow, but over the years I have softened a bit towards them. It’s certainly a lovely draw in your composition. I love it..

      Thank you Jennie - I do like the bright yellow but they can look out of place in the landscape. Good cash crop for the farmers though

    Hello Andrew. I wanted to share a quick tip I heard recently from another painter. She lets “Bounce” dryer sheets (the fabric softening type) hang out of her back pants pocket as she is painting to help keep bugs at bay. Don’t know if this works or not as I’ve not yet tried it. If it does work, it might only be for mosquitos, not sure about flies. And I don’t know if it is the fragrance specific to the Bounce brand or if any brand of dryer sheet works…..I was thinking I might stuff a few sheets in my plein air backpack which hangs on the hook of my tripod and see if that works. Anyway, thought I’d pass it along. Thank you for the video! ~Rhonda

    I think I sketched that yellow field the other day from Falmouth! It's so bright and demanded my attention. Lovely to see your plein air painting process too.

      I’m painting in the rapeseed field this week if the rain holds off long enough. Hard to ignore aren’t they 😃

    your seemingly random strokes always come together and make such expressive and beautiful compositions. i like your choice of colours and the way you dont overthink strokes. Can you just buy mdf panels at a hardwood store and paint it straight?

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  2 года назад +1

      Thank you very much. Mdf can be bought from hardware stores. I think it’s called Masonite in US. It needs to be primed before oil painting

      @@AndrewBarrowmanArt and are the mdf panels you use thin or thick? you prime with with dissolved paint, right? I'm sorry about all the questions, im new to painting and i really prefer painting in a hard surface like cardboard over a canvas, and mdf sounds like a cheap good option

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  2 года назад +1

      @@joaoguilhermemalatocorreia7570 no problem - I think the mdf panels are 2mm thick. You can buy a bigger sheet and easily cut it yourself with a hand saw which makes it even cheaper. I prime mdf with acrylic gesso but normal household emulsion paint would do for practice

    Nice, very cool to watch from start to finish. I do think the painting is keyed quite light and the dynamic range lacks.

    Initial lay in would go faster with a larger brush sir.
