- A beautiful day was had while painting on the North River, a tributary of the Tellico River in East Tennessee.
In this video I take you for a ride into my local mountains, dive into my gear, and give you a complete video of my painting process on this painting.

Nailed it! Hope you do more painting for us. Also loved the scenery and sounds of the river. Thank you.
Thank you, Dana. I will be continuing to paint and make videos. Stay tuned, at the end of May I'm visiting the Grand Canyon.
That was a thoroughly enjoyable plein air painting session for me. Loved your painting results! Please do more painting videos…you are great at it! I am a plein air watercolor painter and still learn from your painting process. Thank you for sharing.😊
Hi Nancy, I really appreciate that you got something from my video, even if it isn't watercolor...which I find a very difficult medium. So kudos to you for painting en plein air with it. I don't have any intention of stopping to produce videos. I just have other priorities and try to put one out as often as I possibly can. So stay tuned. Especially at the end of this month after my trip to the Grand Canyon.
Nice job!! Liked how you created a more dramatic composition than the actual scene by exaggerating the proportions of the rocks.
Thanks, Rick. I appreciate the feedback.
Your painting of the river is excellent. I lived there in Green Cove on the Tellico River although I left there about eight years ago .
I’m a watercolor artist and that area is a painters dream.
Hi Barbra! Very cool to hear that you recognize the place and have lived there. I dream of a cabin in Green Cove or thereabouts. 😁
I live just outside of Cleveland, TN. So, close to a lot of beautiful places to paint, for sure.
Thank you! I enjoy watching you paint. The blocking in i couldn't see how you would proceed...but your detailing is beautiful. Wish i could paint like you do.
Thank you, Margaret!
great video and great painting. I am new to oils. Miced media artist for the most part but as I am getting older I rying new things. l Loved seeing the process. It is very helpful. Thank you and yes do more plein air demos.
Hi Paula, thank you for checking out my video. I plan to continue making more plein air videos in the future. I appreciate the feedback, as it helps me understand what I need to do to make better videos.
I've been using Art treehouse bio thinner for a while. It's safe indoors, does its job well and starts to stink eventually just like mineral spirits does after a few brush washings. I vastly prefer it to mineral spirits.
Thanks, good the hear.
Wonderful simplicity and elemental power. Reminds me of those same qualities in Winslow Homer and the English watercolorist John Sell Cotman. Bravo and thank you!
Thank you! I’m a fan of both and appreciate the compliment.
Excellent as usual!
Thanks, brother!!
Seeing faces within the rocks-
Good one, Todd; yes, pack light! Open Box M is the best! Hard to sense the "scale", in painting, so, put a dipper (bird) on one of the rocks to solve that! LOL. Google it! ;D
Cheers from Southern AZ.
Thank you, Ron! As you can probably tell, mine has seen many brush miles over the years. I have some others that I use too. Just depends on what I'm doing.
I appreciate the feedback.
Nice
Thank you. I appreciate you tuning in.
Color pallette caught my eye right off the bat!
♥
Thank you, brother!
Thanks for sharing your minimal palette process. Great painting and a wonderful, peaceful place to paint . Did you get that plant based solvent on Amazon ?
Hi Justin! I purchased it on the Art Treehouse website. I don’t know if links work in these comments, but try this.

Hi love your work, how do you store your wet painting.
Hi Robert! I use wet panel carriers of various sizes from Prolific Painter. They are basically a frame with two inward facing rabbets that allow the panels to face each other with a air gap. Secured with a couple of velcro straps.
If you are handy with woodworking tools you could make your own.
@@ToddDerrartist thanks Todd for your reply I will check them out.
@@ToddDerrartist Yes, I still have a bunch I made, in many sizes, from the "olden days", when I first started "plein air" painting, mid-1990's, when the "fad" first began, once again, in "modern" times!! ;D.
On some, I paneled the sides with a painting, on canvas, glued on mahogany door skins; they are very "eye catching"!! LOL :D. But I use Ray Mars now, very light, and come in many sizes, but for painting panels only, not stretched canvases; one can google them!
Je suis amateur en peinture et je cherche des conseils pour peindre en plein air.
Merci Bernard. J'apprécie que vous regardiez et si vous en tirez quelque chose, j'en suis heureux.
Where is the composition?
Hi, David. I’m not sure I understand your question. Are you asking about the physical location or the compositional element of the painting?
Location is along the North River near Tellico Plains, TN.
With the painting, I’m using a triangular composition more or less.
Thank you for the question and the view.
Unfortunately from what I can find Open Box M is no longer in business.
It appears that is so. Mine is over 10 years old and has seen extensive use. Too bad they aren’t around anymore.
@@ToddDerrartist Yes, I'm glad I have all of mine, (2) 9x12, (1) 11x14 like you used and (1) 8x10, very nice for smallest panels, and even the "thumb box", very cute, but I rarely use it. Got mine, late 90's, after attending a few PAPA workshops and talked to the artists, they swore by them. The stuff out to today is mostly unusable, at least for me, with magnets and other tricky stuff, also some made of tin!! Yuck!! LOL. I like my handcrafted wood and brass Open Box M's. Could probably sell them for big bucks now I guess, but never would!
