  • Hi there
today I am plein air watercolour sketching - trying out some new Grabie Premium watercolours and equipment.
In the first part of the video I tried a sunset scene on Grabie cold pressed (NOT) watercolour paper. This was great fun and gave me a chance to use the brighter, more vivid reds and oranges.
In the second part of the video I took Basil with me for some landscape sketching. Lots of greens to mix in the early Autumn landscape!
I found the Grabie watercolours (watercolors in US) very easy to use and enjoyed them a lot. They stayed wet and useable. The synthetic Grabie brushed were also better than I expected which was a bonus!
Here is a link to the Grabie watercolours if you'd like to take a look: www.grabie.cc/collections/pai...
Thanks for watching - bye for now - Andrew
Like the video? Why not buy me a coffee?

Hi Andrew :) oh wow! So strange to see you with such clean paint box 😂 at least to start with 😂 Red brushes remind me of my Da Vinci ones.

Hi Andrew, congratulations on getting your image bought that you painted at the Godrevy straight away. I haven't seen the Grabie colours yet. I really like your sketch with the colours. They look quite passable for on the road. It's so nice to see lovely Basil is your companion. He looks so sweet and relaxed. I'm sure you will miss Madeleine as a companion. I wish her all the best and much joy at the university. It's not easy when the children move out. We are here in Cornwall for two weeks. A week has already gone by. We've been doing some walking in the lovely weather and I've also been able to do some sketches. It's just lovely here and our 30th stay in Cornwall. Thank you so much for sharing your work. Have a good time. Gabi😊

Lovely watercolours Andrew. I particularly liked the coast scene, but liked both sketches. I like the way you exploit watercolour`s transparency with numerous washes without getting muddy colours, not easy in my case! I`ve never heard of Grabie but seemed to work well for you. Always good to see Basil!

Thank you so much Steve. Basil is a good boy. He’s very chilled in his old age 😃

The brushes were surprisingly good. They didn’t lose any hairs and held plenty of water

This was an interesting video. I’m not usually that interested in the “product side” of videos like this - just more interested in your work regardless of the brand of materials. But, the set of red-handled quill brushes, in particular, appeals to me. I had never heard of Grabie and wasn’t sure if it was available in the U.S., but of course it is available on Amazon! I’m curious how you liked the quill brushes. I assume they are synthetic squirrel, and I have started to use squirrel quill brushes and really like them for loose work because of how much water/paint they hold, and the lack of “spring” to them. The same lack of spring might be a negative to some people. That set has such a variety of sizes. The paints look decent, too, but I definitely don’t need more paints. Great expressive work, too!

Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to comment. I'm not a fan of product videos either so I try to make it more about the painting and show how the brushes / paints work on different surfaces. The brushes are synthetic but were surprisingly good. Definitely good for outdoor sketching. I wouldn't take expensive watercolour brushes out with me in case I lost one.
      Best wishes - Andrew

Hi Andrew ... looks like the new watercolor set and brushes worked pretty well for you ... really like the sunset scene the colors seemed to be pigmented well and blended nicely ... do you use rough or smooth paper ? Great to see Basil romping about as you do your sketches ...😊

For the sunset scene I used a NOT (cold pressed) semi textured surface

Really loose and expressive. I like your free use of watercolour, nothing rigid.

    Dear Andrew.
I am sorry that the star of the show is very clearly Basil-good-boy… and NOT your new set of watercolor 😊.
More seriously, your sketching sessions are always interesting, in the sense that you are able to reach a certain degree of abstraction of the scene, whatever the medium you may use. This is especially true when you use oil sticks or watercolor, for which details of the scene cannot be quickly and easily reproduced. And this is precisely the idea when sketching.
Simplifying details to get a loose sketch (in some case almost abstract) is maybe a matter of experience or practice. But not only. I guess that you surely also need what we call talent, as it is your case. Some of your sketch would almost deserve to be framed.
    Very respectfully.
    Hello to the good-boy.
    Christophe (from Paris)
