  • Landscape drawing in charcoal. A farm track in Cornwall that I will revisit many times over the next year as I work on a new series of landscape work.
    For this studio drawing on Arches Aquarelle hot pressed paper, I used willow charcoal, compressed charcoal pencil, Nitram charcoal stick, putty rubbers and blending stumps. For the first time on a charcoal drawing I used some masking fluid to protect an area of paper I wanted fairly white.

    Wow! I love to see all the different ways you make marks. Your charcoal drawings have so much character and look so natural and organic. I really like that quality about them. :D And as always you always have striking compositions.

      Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it - I used to hate the 'feel' of charcoal - it felt too dry - but now I love it

    It's great to see another charcoal drawing Andrew. It's interesting to see the different tools you use. You mentioned scratching tools. Do you sometimes scratch into the paper to get back to white?

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt

      Hi Justin - thank you! Yes I do scratch back into the paper if if is thick enough to take it. It is a last resort though!

    Do you find the fixative lifts off any of the detail and or charcoal density? With soft pastels fix spray sort of flattens the luminous quality of the colour (if I put too much on..😀)

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  Год назад

      Yes I find that happens with charcoal if I apply too much fixative. I only give it a light spray when I’ve finished or it goes dark and blends together too much

    what do you use to fix your artwork Andrew. I've used cheap hairspray.

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  Год назад

      I use a light spray of fixative. I wouldn’t recommend using hairspray for finished drawings as they will go yellow over time 👍🏻

    • @j.watson9060
      @j.watson9060 Год назад

      I mainly do it on my sketchbook to stop smudging but thanks for the advice get some fixative. Can't spoil the ship for ha'p'orth of tar
