Wonderful. Just great to see you at work - even better to see you at work with charcoal. Such a wonderful medium. Please carry on making these excellent videos.
I just love this!!! It's so great to be able to watch you work from beginning to end! Fascinating! The finished piece is wonderful!!! Such an expressive medium! Thank you Andrew - and a big hug to Basil!
I cannot wait to try my first landscape in charcoal after watching this video. Thank you for taking us through your thought process & sharing your methods :) :)
Amazing texture! It’d hard to believe that such a great piece is just charcoal…if the feel of it on my fingers didn’t freak me out so much I’d love to try it😂
You're such a master at everything you do. Lovely to see this come to life, especially the organic shape of the tree. It is my dream to paint besides you one day!
É gratificante e uma verdadeira viajem, poder apreciar grandes mestres admiráveis como o Sr. Seu talento é fantástico. Desejo-lhe sempre boa sorte amigo. Um grande abraço. 👏👏👏👏👏👏.
Lovely video Andrew, not just the charcoal art which is inspiring but also the nice black and white parts of you at the easel, and the cool music. Thanks for taking the effort not just to teach but also to entertain.
Hey Andrew this is so inspiring to see you work with charcoal in this amazing way.. you really have captured the picture and there is so much movement and detail with suggestive tones and shapes.. I’m gonna have to get my charcoal out now I haven’t used it for about 20 years .. loved seeing this.. I’m so glad I found your channel. All the best mate 😊
Nice job Andrew . I'm a charcoal artist myself ! But I don't draw off pictures I draw from my head and to my heart ! I get ideas and textures from a few pictures . But most of the time I just imagine being at that environment that I'm working on in the paper surface ! I just subscribed .
Thank you very much Bryan. I try to use the reference photo as a guide but don’t follow exactly at all anymore. I used to ‘copy’ the photo but since I started working more outdoors and from life it has helped me so much to loosen up. All the best Andrew
Great drawing Andrew! I always enjoy seeing you build up the layers. I haven't been using charcoal much lately and your video really makes me miss it. Its definitely time to get it back out and get going again. Have a great day mate 😁😁👍👍
Thank you Tom. No I didn't stretch the paper this time. It is brown framing tape to hold it onto the drawing board as I was working vertically on the easel. I didn't apply too much liquid charcoal so the paper wouldn't have gotten too wet
This is one of the most enlightening and enjoyable demos I've seen. I have charcoal powder and will probably not use it. I was looking for a way to turn it into liquid charcoal! Are the proportions of ingredients 😊important?
Great work, as usual. Hey what about clipping or mounting a box Like a shoe box (or two)under your work area for that dust to fall into. Maybe line it with some "cling wrap" too; saw a RUclips pastel artist do it.
I sometimes like to tone the paper with charcoal powder. I don't use white chalk for highlights as I find it differs too much from the white of the paper. I'm sorry but I can't remember the music, but it's from epidemic sound
@AndrewBarrowmanArt You are talented. I mean anybody else that tries to create something as amazing as this. Me for instance. I gave up on art long ago.
Really like to use charcoal but as a beginner don’t know what simple subjects to start with? Don’t do portraits. When my hand is out of plaster may try a small landscape. Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks for painting.
Excellent and very atmospheric. Have you tried laying the drawing flat and spraying in the air above it allowing the spray to settle on it? I think this can prevent too much saturation and darkening.
Thank you Rose. I don't spray / fix the charcoal anymore as it tends to bleed and loose the edges I like. I have to store carefully or frame behind glass
Such a beautiful little scene! I love the sharp contrasts against the softness of the fields and the far hedges. At first I thought you had put it in a very weathered and beaten old wooden frame. Silly me. But that would be nice. What a lovely way to spend a rainy & windy Saturday, being by the window and drawing. About how long did this take you ?
Lots of putting on charcoal and erasing! ... Seems to be a forgiving medium in that sense ... Allows for a certain feeling/mood not captured with paint somehow
Nice job. Charcoal is so underestimated for landscape paintings..
Thank you. I love charcoal 😍
This is masterful. Thank you so much for sharing
You're very welcome ☺️
Wonderful. Just great to see you at work - even better to see you at work with charcoal. Such a wonderful medium. Please carry on making these excellent videos.
Thank you very much Malcolm
Love the music to go with the sketching, thanks Basil !
Thank you very much Grant
I just love this!!! It's so great to be able to watch you work from beginning to end! Fascinating! The finished piece is wonderful!!! Such an expressive medium! Thank you Andrew - and a big hug to Basil!
Thank you so much Roxanne. Basil said thank you 🙏🏻

I love all your work Andrew and this was no exception! You handle the charcoal very well
Thanks Judith. This was not working well until I decided to add the liquid charcoal. Then I knew what I had to do 😃
Love your "freelance" style with charcoal!!
Thank you very much David

Thank you Alicia
Wonderful Piece. Has a nice Mood. 👍
Thank you very much Mike
God, beautiful drawing!!!
Thank you so much 😀
Amazing texture! It’d hard to believe that such a great piece is just charcoal…if the feel of it on my fingers didn’t freak me out so much I’d love to try it😂
Thank you very much Cindy. I used to hate the 'feel' of charcoal too but now I am used to it
I imagine that you never really feel finished with your pieces! So much fun!!!!!
So true! I think you reach a point where you don't know how to go any further with them
You're such a master at everything you do. Lovely to see this come to life, especially the organic shape of the tree.
It is my dream to paint besides you one day!
Thank you very much Keke. You’re very welcome to come and paint with me anytime 👍🏻
Aww, Andrew, how much I wish I were that charcoal stick in your hand, living that magic with you. Greetings from Hungary. ♥

Thank you very much Nathalie. I appreciate your comments
Really nice work. you have stretched your paper ? I see the stretch tape on the sides..Because the use of the liquid charcoal?
Thank you Tom. No I didn't stretch the paper this time. It is brown framing tape to hold it onto the drawing board as I was working vertically on the easel. I didn't apply too much liquid charcoal so the paper wouldn't have gotten too wet
Fabulous!!!
Thank you so much 😊
I really enjoyed watching this today so thank you! Im going to give charcoal a go!
That’s great Linda. Thank you 😊
Beautiful, Andrew!

Soo beautiful
Thanks a lot Denise 😊

Thank you very much Birgit. Welcome to our art community 😃
Beautiful artwork.
Congratulations!
Thank you very much
Awesome!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻
This is one of the most enlightening and enjoyable demos I've seen. I have charcoal powder and will probably not use it. I was looking for a way to turn it into liquid charcoal! Are the proportions of ingredients 😊important?
Thank you very much Samantha.
I don’t think the proportions of liquid charcoal are too important. Add more powder if you like it gritty 👍🏻
Great work, as usual. Hey what about clipping or mounting a box Like a shoe box (or two)under your work area for that dust to fall into. Maybe line it with some "cling wrap" too; saw a RUclips pastel artist do it.
Thank you very much Scott.
I love the tip for dust collection 👍🏻
great work. do you ever work on toned paper or use white chalk for highlights? music credit?
I sometimes like to tone the paper with charcoal powder. I don't use white chalk for highlights as I find it differs too much from the white of the paper. I'm sorry but I can't remember the music, but it's from epidemic sound
If you've got the talent, go for it. If not, forget it.
I try my best 😃
@AndrewBarrowmanArt You are talented. I mean anybody else that tries to create something as amazing as this. Me for instance. I gave up on art long ago.
Beautifully observed loose drawing, very inspirational. Who did the music ?
Thank you very much Martyn. I’m sorry I can’t find the artist’s name for the music
Music is amazing …who is the vocalist ? and yes you’re work is inspiring me to go charcoal ☕️
Enjoy charcoal drawing. Sorry I can’t recall the vocalist
Really like to use charcoal but as a beginner don’t know what simple subjects to start with? Don’t do portraits. When my hand is out of plaster may try a small landscape. Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks for painting.
I would start with some landscapes or maybe a simple still life subject to get the hang of the shading etc
@ Did a charcoal & white conte, still life last year, tremendous fun. Thanks
Excellent and very atmospheric. Have you tried laying the drawing flat and spraying in the air above it allowing the spray to settle on it? I think this can prevent too much saturation and darkening.
Thank you Mark that is a brilliant idea. I’ll definitely try that next time 👍🏻
Lovely video, beautiful artwork! Can I ask what songs are playing?
Thank you very much. I will try and find out about the songs
really like your charcoals Andrew - you're v talented. did you catch the Jim Moir exhibition in penzance?
thank you very much Robin
No I didn't catch Jim Moir's exhibition unfortunately
What spray do you use Andrew, love your work.
Thank you very much Lisa. It will be framed in a lime washed ash frame under glass.
It took around 2-3 hours during the afternoon
Perfect!!😊
😊😊😊😊
🙏🏻🙏🏻
I see you use a fixative to seal your charcoal art ,does it change the art piece at all ? Can I ask which spray do you use .
I don’t use fixative anymore on charcoal because I find it affects it by blurring edges too much
Really enjoyed this drawing. How long did it take, seemed like it would take some time because the result is beautiful.
Thank you very much Frits. It took about 3 hours of work
Can you recommend a cheaper paper for anyone starting charcoal drawing?
I would try any cartridge paper. Doesn’t have to be thick / heavyweight which will make it cheaper 👍🏻
Just subbed,
Thank you so much - I appreciate your support
new sub
Thank you for your support 😃
Tell me the name of the song
In Bloom by Victor Lundberg.

@@paulsutton7552 thanks 🙏
Lots of putting on charcoal and erasing! ... Seems to be a forgiving medium in that sense ... Allows for a certain feeling/mood not captured with paint somehow
I agree Nancy. It is a very versatile medium. Once you start using water with it though it is almost impossible to get back to light/ white
