what spectacular scenery you have to paint! I would get bogged down with details or overwhelmed with where to start, but your painting and sketching style of representation is so lively and conveys the riotous feeling of the tangled thorny vines by that gate, or the carpet of leaves mixed in on the gravel road through the forest - they are all so lovely! Thanks for showing us your project. It is very inspiring.
Your work ethic inspires me to get back to work after about a 2 year ‘’block’’. It’s helpful to see how you choose your subject matter and don’t waste time fiddling around to achieve a perfect environment within which to work - just a chair to sit in, or the ground around you, a rock or wall does it for you. I am going to adopt that attitude and avoid advice about what gear to take, etc. I love how casein paints, tried it, but I’m allergic to it.😢 Can you share any wisdom about getting out of “painters’ block”?
Just do it, yes. Begin working as often as possible and then look for a pattern to when these creative blocks occur. My personal is 90 days of creativity and 30 days off. I will read about it, go to museums and studio exhibits and so forth and then something will catch my eye. Could be a shadow pattern somewhere, light on a road disappearing down a meadow, beauty is everywhere and creativity allows much. I once had a housekeeper for about 4 years, she once told me I taught her to see. To see a painting in the landscape that lasted 30 seconds or less and is the why I have so many pictures on my phone.
Congratulations on completing the Strada Easel challenge 👏 Your paintings and sketches are really beautiful. I especially love day 28 of the Tehidy wood track and day 31 of the view from the top of Carn Brae. Fabulous ❤ I have to say that watching your plein air sketching videos really encouraged me to do more sketching and now I’m loving trying different mediums and sketchbooks. Thanks for that 👍 I think the Khadi sketchbooks are still my favourite.
Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful creations, especially outdoors. And what tenacity to be there every day! I have the impression that the weather was better than in Brittany (lots of rain, fog and storms) and it was difficult for me to get out and paint.
Awesome work Andrew…..very impressive dedication commitment, doing justice to the beauty of south Cornwall, thank you, I was born in Westend, Redruth in 48, left for Canada in 57, I was in Redruth last October, will look you up when I’m back there again, I’m also smitten with painting over the last 55 years… all the best,
Wonderful sketches, very inspiring and made in such different media. I already have a supply of sketchbooks, but I don't have the courage to use them :))) It's a pity to ruin them and they just lie there waiting for who knows what :))) It's a new month and a short one at that, so I'm taking out my equipment and at least I'll make a few lines :)) You've motivated me a lot. Thank you and best regards
Really nice sketches - I especially like the woodland views. Casein is a perfect media to use outdoors because it dries fast - and has a pretty strong odor! (I had to give up using it indoors - it's not toxic, but the smell really gets to me). Your facility with the various media is an inspiration.
I have found gouache works much like casein and I don't recall a strong odor when working with them indoors. Sometimes I use gouache over or with watercolor and have had great success with the combo.
@AndrewBarrowmanArt Oh great! I think many people here would be interested. I don't have much time for painting at the moment, but I still go sketching every week!
respect! because of the freezing Jan. , probably the picture of 28th and the last of the 31th are my favorites. like to do the same , lucky me, Jan has gone, an Feb. just started and the march is no challange:-) haha
You always work from life, don't you? So this was a total doddle for you..... why, you were BOUND to win any challenge! Ignore my levity, it's all based on envy.... If I had to define your work, the word I'd choose is 'energy' - there's life in your every sketch. And the beneficial influence of Basil, of course: without that, you'd be no better than the rest of us (he asked me to say that).
you really are an amazing artist in all mediums! Thank you for sharing your work with us.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful work.
Wonderful sketches and all so very inspiring ! It was also nice to see Basil on the beach.
Thanks!

Hi Andrew. I love seeing your work across so many mediums. I was wondering if you also do online sketching courses (either online or in person).
Thank you Helen. I’m hoping to film some online courses for people to access very soon 😃
