Love this setup! the other sketch easels i've seen genarally have these special hinges, that are so hard to find, i love this design for not having any, great work!
Really like the magnet clips, I use a spring loaded hand clamp but it does intrude on the mixing well, especially if I'm using a small sketchers palette. I have streamlined my rig to a light weight UPVC batten about 2"x 16" x 3/8". This has the tripod mount fitted to its centre and fits easily in my tripod bag. I just clip my support board or sketchbook to the batten with either bulldog clips or small sprung hand clamps. If I need a support board, I have replaced my normal plywood board with 2 sections of interlocking Correx type panel. I think it was from some bathroom wall covering I found in a skip, but it has tongue and grove edges that hold quite firm just pushed together. I have cut it so I have a 12" x 16" board that breaks down to 2 12" x 8" sections, so broken down they fit nicely with an A4 Pad in my sketch bag. Sometimes I carry just a small tripod, it only extends to 24" but is ideal height when sitting... which at my age is most preferable. This tripod has 3 sections and collapses to just 10" - it is very light too so I can get the whole lot in a canvas sketching bag or my small day sack.

Nice job Brian! I always love to see how artists customize their outdoor work space. I think my plein air (oils) set up is mostly a Rube Goldberg contraption from different artists... that seems to work best for me. Appreciate your taking the time to make and post this. This is a nice set up. I really like the idea about the magnetic clips for metal palettes. I just thought that with the rag, instead of using a clamp, and since you mentioned carabiners, you could get a cheap golf towel (since they come with carabiners already, are absorbent and come in a nice size) and use that to clip it onto the hole with the nut you've already made. Great video- this is a really smart setup. I have spent a bunch of time building complex pochade boxes to solve a lot of issues but when it comes down to it- just a simple board is really the most versatile and travel-able set ups. I have a similar rig I made with plywood and a “Gurney easel” I made which I use way more than the boxes that end up too heavy and cumbersome. :) looking forward to more videos!
I made this and it works great; however, I kept the clamp on it and just turned it 90 degrees. the handle works great for hanging a towel. I bought a clip that holds my plastic wine glass on the side. My folding water container has pockets on the sides for brushes. Love it all.
Question: How did you attach the magnet to your small plastic water cup (that you showed on top of the board)? Could one glue a magnet on the inside, to make it flush? Thanks for the great video of your set up, and agree the upside down magnet clips was a brilliant idea!
Great on-the-go setup! One suggestion for the paintbrush holes that might work, is to add a ring of some foam or sponge material to create just enough resistance to prevent the brushes from falling through (maybe weatherstripping, then use a hole puncher for the brush opening?). I'm sure you'd prefer not having the clutter of brushes there at the bottom, if possible.
Mo Poppins That's a really great idea! That would probably work really well. I've found that I really only use a couple of brushes when painting outside. One in my right hand and the other in my left with my palette. I really only use the rail while I'm not painting and need a place to set everything down. If I ever try a board with holes for brushes, again, I may try your idea. 👍
You absolutely need to patent this! Or at least contract with an art supplier to manufacture/market this easel set-up! I would definitely buy something like this for plein air!

I used to carry around my camera tripod for painting in plein air, though heavy and bulky. But I knew I had to look for a cheap and light tripod, which I eventually bought for 10 Euro in a Chinese goods store. I am exceedingly happy with it and it even fits inside my backpack.
A decent music stand can make a nice working surface as well, I have one that folds up (not the "wire" ones), and it's sturdy, the lip is a little tall though, but since its metal, I can use magnets easily. and I can use it to hold music lol
You are great, this is a super cool and cheap way to have a plein air painting time! I struggle with the places I seat, where I put my stuff and all of this!!!! I always ended up in a corner, surrender and all my things outside my bag. What a mess! I will try to recreate your method, sounds logical tho!

hlk01 Hi! That was definitely a consideration. It does protrude a bit above the top of the board and would not be ideal for single sheets. Since I knew I would be using this for watercolor blocks and sketchbooks, I knew the protrusion wouldn't be an issue. Also, if I ever take single sheets out on location, I would tape them to a separate small board beforehand. I suppose the best solution would be to countersink the t-nut flush with the board but I was worried that with the board being fairly thin (and just chipboard) that it might be a weak joint. Next time, I may glue a thin block of wood to the bottom and then countersink the front using a circle drill bit and small chisel. Good question.
I’d really like to make one of those. Can you make a video on how you drilled the T-nut hole in the board and how much mat board you put and how you attach it to the board. Did you use glue? Id be interested in seeing how you put the whole board together. Great video and thank you!
Victoria Lipford Hi Victoria! If I end up converting my new board, I will definitely shoot some video. It's pretty simple once you have the materials, in hand. You just need to find the center of the board and drill a hole big enough for the narrow end of the t-nut. Once you have the hole drilled, you can just feed the t-nut through. I think I glued it in with a little super-glue. The glue is there to just keep the t-nut in place when not in use since the clamping action of the tripod screwed into the t-nut from the bottom side would hold firm even without glue. For the mat board, it's just there to give the tripod mount a flat surface around the t-nut. Otherwise, it would stick out from the bottom of the board. I just used some elmers or something similar to glue two layers of mat board around the t-nut. It doesn't have to be something fancy (mine sure isn't)... just enough thickness to match the thickness of the t-nut poking through the bottom of the board. Like I said, if you buy the materials, it will be pretty easy to figure out. Hope this helps!

Jenny May I had thought about wrapping the travel brush barrels in tape to give them some "stoppage." O-rings is a great idea! I've found that when I'm actually painting, I am just throwing the brushes down on the tray, anyway. I think taking the time to carefully place the brushes in the holes might interrupt my work flow. Best laid plans.... ha, ha.

Sam Scott With more consideration, I think I may understand your question better. I think you are asking about this channel, specifically, and whether I do videos on painting or if I just show supplies and what-not. If so, I think I can give a better answer. I love seeing other artists' supplies and equipment and have noticed that other artists do, as well. So, I've intentionally "kicked off" this channel with a lot of videos on gear (and there are more to come). However, I do intend to do some painting videos but they may be more about specific tips and techniques in watercolor rather than showing full paintings from start to finish. We'll see. I'm new at this (making videos) but anything is possible for future content. I took your question as implying that I don't paint much (in general) but just show gear and pretend to be an artist. I hope that's not the case, and upon further thought, I don't think that was your intention. If it was, I guess all I can say is that with RUclips, you get what you pay for. 😁
Hi there, thanks for sharing! I've been enjoying the videos I've seen, mostly your kits and plein air setup... just a word of feedback, the volume of your opening credits is really quite a bit louder than the average opener, which makes for frustrating hurried fiddling with controls, especially when compared to the volume level of your voice, which is on the quiet side of whatever "normal" is on RUclips, and the combination is a bit off-putting. Just housekeeping stuff, really, but it makes a big difference to your watch stats.

I think it would add to the usefulness of you videos if you could include links to all of the materials you show. When you say things like this is a whatever and I got it at Hobby Lobby or whatever you underestimate the ignorance if some of us who are new to art and new to construction, me for instance. Many artists use Amazon links but also art shops and sources for the nuts and bolts type items. These would go in the top area where info is noted. Your videos give useful info but personally I like looking at product links as I continue through the videos. It adds lots to considering the products and construction estimates, knowing that with this info I can then track down bargain sources. One additional point in having this info is that it gives me the real name of the item as it will appear on the product itself and access to a product picture which helps me since too many times I am left trying to track down "thingies that do such and such" ! The info you put in this video for theT-Nuts was perfect. Thanks. New subbie here.

Use masking tape around your travel brushes at the top so that it doesn't slide down the holes you have made.

I bought mine at Lowes in the Fasteners (screws, bolts, nuts) section.
Wouldn't rubber O rings stop your brushes falling through?
Jenny May I had thought about wrapping the travel brush barrels in tape to give them some "stoppage." O-rings is a great idea! I've found that when I'm actually painting, I am just throwing the brushes down on the tray, anyway. I think taking the time to carefully place the brushes in the holes might interrupt my work flow. Best laid plans.... ha, ha.

Sam Scott With more consideration, I think I may understand your question better. I think you are asking about this channel, specifically, and whether I do videos on painting or if I just show supplies and what-not. If so, I think I can give a better answer. I love seeing other artists' supplies and equipment and have noticed that other artists do, as well. So, I've intentionally "kicked off" this channel with a lot of videos on gear (and there are more to come). However, I do intend to do some painting videos but they may be more about specific tips and techniques in watercolor rather than showing full paintings from start to finish. We'll see. I'm new at this (making videos) but anything is possible for future content. I took your question as implying that I don't paint much (in general) but just show gear and pretend to be an artist. I hope that's not the case, and upon further thought, I don't think that was your intention. If it was, I guess all I can say is that with RUclips, you get what you pay for. 😁

Hi there, thanks for sharing! I've been enjoying the videos I've seen, mostly your kits and plein air setup... just a word of feedback, the volume of your opening credits is really quite a bit louder than the average opener, which makes for frustrating hurried fiddling with controls, especially when compared to the volume level of your voice, which is on the quiet side of whatever "normal" is on RUclips, and the combination is a bit off-putting. Just housekeeping stuff, really, but it makes a big difference to your watch stats.

That's a fantastic set up. Do your black clamps create indentations on your arches block pad?
THEMAYQUEEN1 Thank you! The clamps seem to have just the right amount of tension to not cause any dents. Plus, the orange plastic at the tips is a bit softer. Great question.

I think it would add to the usefulness of you videos if you could include links to all of the materials you show. When you say things like this is a whatever and I got it at Hobby Lobby or whatever you underestimate the ignorance if some of us who are new to art and new to construction, me for instance. Many artists use Amazon links but also art shops and sources for the nuts and bolts type items. These would go in the top area where info is noted. Your videos give useful info but personally I like looking at product links as I continue through the videos. It adds lots to considering the products and construction estimates, knowing that with this info I can then track down bargain sources. One additional point in having this info is that it gives me the real name of the item as it will appear on the product itself and access to a product picture which helps me since too many times I am left trying to track down "thingies that do such and such" ! The info you put in this video for theT-Nuts was perfect. Thanks. New subbie here.
