As I was watching this on my phone, my three year old son looked over my shoulder and said “is that Kal Jecomsom?” Yes, buddy, it is… “ooh!!” So we watched it together. Thanks for the great vid!
I am late to the party here but I had to comment on this and say how gorgeous this piece came out. It's nice to see such a modern, sleek design like this. Great job! 👍 Subscribed!
Cool pot, love the inlay, super unique and very interesting idea. Personally I would have added a few coats of thin ca at the end for a high gloss finish and to ensure the plugs never come out from wood movement over the years.
A nice and unique project! 😃👍 Can you imagine that I thought it's something completely different when I saw the thumbnail? I thought it's much smaller and you made a knob for a hand shifted gearbox. 🤣😂🤣
I was thinking this was going to be another Crafty Carl Special but this is indeed a real mans project even with it's studded inlay! Nice work, very nice indeed.
Have you considered using a tumbler to polish the aluminum beforehand? I learned to use them when I took jewelry design classes. The tumbler in question was first used to polish bullet shells, and you can get a REALLY nice shine with them. You can get them at Harbor Freight. It looks like a little kettle with a motor on it.
Very lovely piece! The metal inlay on wood is super sexy. I have a coffee cup like that where the plugs came out and I have to use some thick aluminum wire and stuff it in, polish it up. Its a plastic handle so tricky.
Oh wow Carl, that is super cool, thank you..You say you used to work on a freight liner, not too sure what that is but do you just teach woodwork now? You two take care as always
Thank you Val!! Freightliner is a semi truck brand, and Robin and I were painters there. We now own Niles Bottle Stoppers, and teach woodturning full time :) Take care sweetie
Do you have a preference between using the #1 hollower you start vs using a forstner bit to take out the center wood when you begin hollowing? Is that a 6 half dozen the other kind of decision?
The forstner bit works very well, I guess it all depends on what I'm doing. If I was doing a deep hollow form, I would of went with the forstner bit first.
Very creative I appreciate use of mixed materials. I may have missed the link you discussed “iron hand…” did not see it, could you please send or post again. Thank you!
Thank you very much Elias! Robin films all the videos on our cell phone. It's a Samsung Galaxy S10+ The video quality on these phones is amazing these days, and this one isn't even a newer model. Take care, and good luck!
I have a general question...if you have a block of wood and know the general shape...wouldn't it make less of as mess to just cut out the general shape? FYI: Did you know if a dog got ahold of this and started chewing...it would make him sick? Walnut oil and walnut wood are toxic to dogs...well, I'm assuming with the Aluminum inlay it would be kept out of reach...just an FYI.
We no longer can buy stuff like that for scrap rates. Story goes, someone tried paying scrap rate for a whole sheet of stainless, and used their laser to cut Harley logos out of it.
@@CarlJacobsonI certainly wasn't complaining. I know people with voice box issues and they sounded hoarse at first. I was just suggesting you may want to be checked out physically.

Very nice, Carl. Did you consider hitting this with an abrasive paste like Ack's to polish the aluminum? Might have worked.
Thank you Tom!! I do have some Yorkshire Grit, I'll try that on the next one.
Carl, this is a beautiful vase! It is very elegant. Do you have a shop?
Amazing woodworking!

Looks great! Would you recommend a sanding sealer or would it inhabit the oil.
Thank you Charles! I've never used a sanding sealer, but for something like this I think it would be a good idea. Maybe try it on a scrap piece first.
Thanks!
neat project Carl, came out great, I have some aluminum wire that I could try something like that with.
Thank you buddy! That sounds really cool, I'd love to see it.
Looks great! Love the pattern too! :D
Thank you very much Matt!!

Hey Carl gorgeous piece! I'm also thinking about making my own woodturning videos wich is why I'm asking: what camera are you using?

It's Myrtle wood, and the dogs aren't in the shop. You could trim some of it off, it's just a faster process to turn it.
@@CarlJacobson oh, I'm sorry, was thinking it was walnut.
Really nice piece as usual Carl. Do you use the same lathe speed on the inside as you do on the outside?
Thank you very much!! Yes I normally turn at the same speed.
This one was about 2000 inside and out.
@@CarlJacobson Thanks Carl. Is it better to turn fast like that with carbide tools?
So many ideas with them plugs. You should start selling them.
Thank you Mark! A lot of possibilities for sure :)
Pretty Cool :)
Thank you Aaron!!
Very nice Carl, how tell is the piece Please
Thank you Douglas! It's about 6in.
Cool
