Quick Tip for Yellow! OK, I've finally gotten enough use out of that footage I took of painting up that Start Collecting Slaves to Darkness box... for now. What MASSIVE project will be in the next Goobertown video? :-)
I'm going to go out on a limb and say the next BIG thing is going to be Seraphon related... You dropped that hint in a goobertown roulette video a long time ago, still keeping my eyes peeled for that one!
There's a Bob Ross element of "Now here we're gonna put a dash of pink on this heretical warrior, just spiffing up his spikes of death to really give them that lush, demon of chaos look."
I finally tried this recipe, and god it worked like a charm!!!!!! I now have a whole squad of beautifully vibrant yellow squigs and squig hoppers, I'm going to recommend the recipe to everyone who will listen.
Huh, I literally just came onto RUclips to find some tips on painting yellow for some House Baratheon minis I want to paint up for the ASOIAF miniatures game...and bam! You've uploaded this just a few minutes ago. Thanks man, this seems like a great approach that I would never have thought to use.
Yea, I think I'm going to do this on my Stag Knights and Sentinels. Wardens are mostly covered in steel plate, so will probably just prime them gray with zenithol highlight of white.
Brent, just wanted to drop you a line to say that I've been really enjoying your videos and between yourself and tabletop minions you helped me take the plunge and buy an airbrush a couple of weeks ago. I'm still very new to it but I can already see that it may be the best hobby investment that I've made in years. so thank you.
If anyone wants a good yellow, I really, really recommend Army Painter's speedpaint Zealot Yellow. Despite being a speed paint, it creates a much richer and solid yellow than a lot of more traditional yellow paints. It just looks really good, and can be touched up with other yellows on top to bring up the level of brightness even more. I will try a pink base for my Wraith army though, I intend them to be yellow and orange.
Brent, I've only been watching your videos for just over 2 weeks now. These Chaos Warriors are some of your best work yet. Thank you for the great colour tips and keep the awesome content coming!
@@GoobertownHobbies Probably. Not enough population up here to move this sort of stuff regular. I have gotten into the habit of ordering every thing online from big US companies. If you're looking for something that won't chunk like titanium white ink, I've had really really good success with molotow one4all signal white. Guess through the airbrush beautifully and doesn't descend into chunks like the liquitex titanium white ink.
Surprisingly, you can do a lot of things using contrasting colors; you can use something like a purple/violet ink to add shading to yellow and it gives a lot of depth, and you can do the same using red and green. Mixing contrasting colors usually gets you a rich brown which you can tint depending on which of the colors you add more. I saw a similar trick with magenta and yellow on the channel RobPaintsModels where he painted up the Orruk warband for Shadespire in that vibrant yellow color scheme and its *always* impressive to watch it happen.
If I prime something pink, it's never gonna move past that.. Because pink armies!!!! But I am of course also the person that adds glitter and a dab of nail polish to some of my models 😅🤔
If you’re looking for more color combos, I’d suggest trying priming green with blue and red with purple. Not a mini painter, but I find those color combos work really well in traditional paintings, so they might work equally well here.
Hahaha, nobody was more surprised by the result than I was :-) The crazy thing is the airbrush step at least is (relatively) easy, you could totally do it!
I've seen brown and green combine in interesting ways, like dark green recesses that happened when I painted brown over green, or Agrax Earthshade washed over olive green.
Brilliant video, all my questions answered by the end. I have seen green used as an undercoat for red, and light brown for yellow, but I really love the look you got with the pink and and then yellow ink.
It makes sense because when you want to shade yellow, you want to move more towards orange as adding black pigment tends to make things turn more of a snotty green. So, adding red makes yellow in to orange, and pink makes the transition less of a jump in hue. Warm hues in general tend to turn muddy with black, so moving towards another adjacent color in hue for your shades looks better. Its a method I learned for digital coloring that, in most ways can work well with pigment. Rarely do you see instances of using a directly darker or lighter shade of the base color in painting guides.
Glad that I marked this one Brent. I have tree frogs with Goblin riders to paint. I'm hoping that the black patches give the yellow that extra punch. Thanks again Brent for a super tutorial.
Just upgraded my ebay airbrush to an old iawata HP-b and OMG is it a huge difference! I hated airbrushing before, it was really only good for basecoats. Now with the Iwata its like a laser and even though the ink is so thin it doesn't splatter! The ebay brush seemed either to clog or splatter. I'm having a lot more fun painting now, love watching the videos thank you Goobs!
@@GoobertownHobbies the best part is there is a new art store that just opened 5 mins away and they sell these same inks, i can't wait to try out some new inks for the first time. Great video thank you :D
I cannot remember what channel I saw it on but in the same vein as pink to white I saw purple to green. They were doing the skin of an orc and based with purple and slowly built to the green. It had the same level of coolness as this.
I always spray a patch of colour onto a primed board, before i change colours in my airbrush. Eventually have a great sample board of colours. It's always nearby when i'm painting, and before i change a colour, i then add a dot of what is in the airbrush, onto every different colour patch. Eventually there's examples of how all colours look applied over all other colours.
Love this. I have an airbrush and I've stayed in my comfort zone so far. Priming, and the occasional zenithal highlight. This is great. I might use this on my Chaos Lord on Karkadrak from this very set.
Love to see some more recipes that at first seems odd but produce a great result. Going to start a big project this summer for a kickstarter that has a lot of elves that show a lot of skin, luckily I own a airbrush and gonna steal your skintone recipe for the amazons you did :)
I would have thought having been given the concept you of all people would have run with the idea. In the same way you used pink undercoat, I used orange over the black primer coat of my minis. We all know red over black is horrendous but I was painting 25 mm Napoleonics, British and I had not yet begun using grey as the primer. Anyway, I found a couple of thin layers of orange allowed the red to settle with a little bit of shade here and there for the best effect. Now and again I still test to see what other colours provide a nice under coat, like say brown with green.
Yellow is such a difficult colour to paint that I came here looking for tips - and I'm a digital artist, not even a traditional painter let alone one that works specifically with models. Great advice and examples! Finally understand this problematic colour more
Like a damned fool, I have decided to *try* to paint up a squad of Lamenters scouts for my grand return to the hobby this year (kill team seems like a good start for me)… pink, huh? That is not something I would ever have thought of, but seeing you paint your chaos chaps that absolutely lovely yellow colour sort of proves the point. Looks like I’ve got a painting process sorted! Also, those chaos knights and warriors are staggering. I love that colour scheme. It’s so unique!
These look amazing! I'm a 2D painter and I've found pink to be really useful underpaint for a number of works. It's something I picked up in art school from some abstract painters.
I would love to know what kind of PSI you're using with yellow. You seem to be able to get your airbrush up really close to the model without splattering/spiderwebbing.
I would have loved to see a comparison between the yellow over the pink versus yellow over other primer colors. I believe that this works great, but need to see it both ways to really understand the effect. :)

Example: if main color is Red, but I want cool to cold shadowing, using a Blue color as the under coating in the shadows should give a nice cool to cold shading of the shadows. Using a Purple should make slightly warmer, but still cool feeling. Inversely using a pretty to very dark Orange or Yellow as the under coating of the shadow areas should result in a warmer feeling shadowing red.
bit late to the game but if you want some good ideas for how to layer translucent colors look up watercolor painting tutorials. but for some quick reference blue makes a nice shadow for green (or yellow, for that more vibrant green) . purple for red. and a dark blue for purple, orange is pretty much the same principle as the yellow, except a red instead of pink. i don't know if this has been said already but i hope it helps!
