In germany we have a saying: "There has never been a master, falling out of the sky!" Do your hard work. Paint, do it again, do it again, do it again....you get the point ;-)
When I was talking about the masters with their mysterious highlighting skills I was specifically thinking of one of YOUR videos where you were highlighting a hormagaunt carapace... I remember thinking how does she do it!??? :-)
One additional step that will give you smoother transitions is after your final highlight give it all a glaze in your midtone, then redo the final highlight. This will make the transitions much softer
Something i've always had to keep in mind when painting is...wet paint isn't an accurate depiction of what the dried paint looks like. Sometimes I have to walk away and let the mini sit over night, and come back the next day when it's fully dried and i'm always pleasantly surprised how well they naturally blended once dried! Nice looking work and a great sample sculpt for practicing muscle tone highlights!
most people when showing "how it's done" don't show how it's done, they just show off. Refreshing to find someone who does show how it's done. I still have problems though applying this in practice, and that is that my hands just aren't steady enough (carpel tunnel), poor eyesight and hand-eye coordination doesn't help either. It's the same with painting eyes and other tiny details.
I notice that the wash creates all sorts of high lights that might predict the right place when it's still wet. Maybe one could take a photo of that to use that as a reference for where high lights could go especially if we're trying to make a more glassy shield? Always love your videos and philosophy, thank you.
Pushing through the ugly phase(s) is so important. I think quite a lot of people give up at that point or decide they've mucked it all up and they have to strip the mini and start again. As you say, "Have faith in the process" - it will probably end up so much better than you think part way through it.
You are so supportive, I love listening to you telling me to trust the process and that I will get better. Mini painting is a test of confidence, you start out with none and quickly get discouraged. Keeping a blind faith that it will all work out is essential for me. I have a few mini's that came out terrible and made me want to give up, one day I will go back to them and try again and I have faith that it will be better next time. Thanks for the supportive words, keep being awesome!
Having faith in my plan until the model is more finished was a huge revelation for me too. I would always get disappointed in how a part looked, but when I started sticking it out and continuing the model would suddenly come together and look fantastic. Sometimes, even a highly-skilled part of a model won't start looking good until the rest of it is worked on too!
Brent. Those shields look awesome. It's amazing how different levels of experience relate to each other. While your struggles have you comparing other painters before you, I'm learning from your videos while thinking "this guy is a master".
Geez, Brent, where to start? Your voice is hypnotic. Watching you paint these models was absolutely mesmerizing. It's hard to imagine having the patience you demonstrate doing this video. Watching your brush strokes just screams at me, "control." Seeing your paint brush with that fine tapered, pointed tip- I don't know if I have ever seen such a beautiful, perfect brush as it applies those careful, delicate dabs of paint! Wow, mind is completely blown seeing you work. Amazing and astounding!
Great video Brent. I was also thrilled to see Army Painter paints featured so prominently in your video since it's what I use at home and I almost never see it in high quality RUclips channels, such as yours. I love them and have had great success with them so far.
Every time I dont have mood for painting all I have to do is watch your video with a calm voice and passion and I immediately pull out my brush. Very nice video with great tutorial. Thank you
Sometimes sitting there looking at my models wondering if I can give it the paint job it deserves, most times I put the model down and walk away from it for months. I think just having a go just to get that practice in is key, keep at it and eventually you will break through one of those bubbles and realize you have just leveled up.
I know what you mean. There are so many models out there waiting to be painted that I won't try because I don't feel my skill would match the skill of the sculptor. I've found out that nobody minds and paint comes off easy with alcohol, so paint what you want to paint, and if you don't like it do it again.
I think one of goober's best tips is buy crap minis on ebay cheap, then just use them as test models, prime, paint, reprime over paint, try something else. never plan on keeping that mini.
Brent as always, it is a powerful thing you are doing. At the time of this post, we 65939 gather around to wash out the icky things happening around the country in a drum circle, all of us vibing to the beats you lead us with to the tune of these little lizards. Thanks for enduring. Stay well!
This couldn't have come at a better time! Just today I finally felt like i thinned my paint well enough and removed enough of that paint from my brush to layer to a point that I was actually satisfied with (They were muscles, too). Cant wait to pick it up again tomorrow! :P
Came here from a recommendation from Jazza, and he is right you have a very simple and easy to understand way of painting miniatures, like the Bob Ross of painting minis. Subbed!
Hi. I found this channel only recently. I really like the way you talk to beginers. I have been painting for many years. Before the acrylic takeover. Lol. A total noob with acrylics. I paint in oils so the blending is easy and a smooth transition between shades with no lines is simple. Another advantage is that i only have 20 tubes of paint and any shade is easy to mix from that. I still use the original tubes i bought back in 1996 when i started and i have painted hundreds of figurines or minis as you call them now. Oils are expensive when you start but as i say 25 years later i am still using those same tubes. I have been watching many of your videos during lockdown and enjoy the way you teach. Sorry this is so long. All the best. Stay safe.
Hey I'm glad you're enjoying these! Oil painting on models is a really interesting topic, and it's something that I want to spend more time exploring. That extra working time and the blending that's possible is really interesting to me. Plus a little row of testors enamel paint bottles would be a sick thumbnail ;-) Definitely on my list! :-)
Thank you very much for taking the time to create this content. It was very inspirational and very well articulated! Now I need to go apply those techniques... Cheers, Greg
I've had a mini sitting on my desk for a few days with me trying to find a video for highlighting. I literally went through the steps you mentioned lol, Base, wash, edge highlighting and was on the hunt for more! Thanks for the extremely well timed vid!
If you're still looking for more, I have a playlist of all the videos that I found myself recommending, and on there are several on the topic. Off hand, Miniac has an excellent video on the mechanics of where to place a highlight, so I'd start there. (I'm pretty sure it's titled "How to highlight almost anything".) And yes Brent, this one is totally going in that playlist. Excellent perspective, and technique!
Great video, Brent! I just came by to personally thank you for bringing me into this new hobby. I was kind of interested in painting some Boardgame miniatures that came as a birthday present, but the hobby seemed scary, overwhelming and I lack a lot of artistical talent. Your video about painting the nightvault barbarian warband really showed me that getting started is easy and the other videos you showed were so full of positivity and chilled, that I gave it a try. 3 months later it has become one of the most fullfilling, relaxing and wholesome hobbies I have ever started, as I can just sit down, accept that every time I pick up a miniature I am learning sth new and enjoy the slow progress while listening to audiobooks. Thanks for bringing that into my life. You, Squidmar, Miniac and of course uncle Atom are truly an inspiration for us hobby starters and an enrichtment for youtube!
OMG! I had to come back and post a comment. I'm a noob painter I just do minis I need for my household D&D games. I've always struggled with this and Saturday morning this video popped up I watched it and I walked ove to the paint table and went to work. The last 2 days I have produced hands down the best work I've ever done and I owe it to this video. Thank you so much stranger on the internet!
Very inspirational to learn that you don't need to be some genius or have a specific talent, but that the right technique, motivation and practice will do the job just fine! Seeing box art or watching these professional RUclipsrs can be intimidating. To know you can just start with a piece of a shield and use that to practice is a lot less daunting. I got a feeling: Hold on, that seems doable!
"Im not a painting wizard, I'm just some guy with a 30 cent paint brush" boy howdy do i feel that in my soul. Thank you for your content; seriously, you are like the Bob Ross of mini painting.
I just had a similar experience painting muscles of a troll miniature. After I was all done, a step back proved a job well done. A bunch of little steps really do add up. Great tutorial!
Love this video. I have been wondering how to do this for a while now. I had watched several videos on the topic of building up / layering progressively lighter colors to create a blended highlight effect but was never clear on how to do it. Your explanation was perfect. I’m finally going to give it a go. Your calm encouragement and simple honesty has made all the difference and given me the confidence to try this technique, so thank you.
Hey Richard!!! I've been seeing you working your way through the 'ol goobertown backlog this week, but I've been so busy that I haven't had time to respond until now. It makes me really happy that you're getting some value out of these older vids- don't burn through them all too quick! Welcome (back) to the hobby, I believe in you :-)
My girlfriend told me something recently, that was really motivating: "Your efforts will never betray you." Just keep going, it will pay off eventually! On a side note, I have a big box of old saurus warriors in my drawer that I never painted, guess I know what doing today!
I generally love your serene voice, your videos, and the message that shines throughout all of them to take it easy, try, fail, paint again, enjoy yourself, and so on BUT this particular video has been a life-changer for me! Just tried layering for the first time on my dryad's leaves, and I am awestruck by how good it looks even when far from perfect and smooth. Thank you Brent!
I've never really commented much on videos, but I wanted to take a second to thank you! I've had a pile of paints and minis sitting around and no motivation to paint over the last 4-5 months. But watvhing this and many of your other videos has motivated me to get some paint thinner and practice more! Keep up the amazing work on content and stay safe in these trying times.
This looks so cool, and before I clicked the video, I thought that I had a long way 'til I can do that. And then you showed how doable it was, thanks for all of your videos !
Awesome video Brent, I'm in a similar mindset. I must admit I put my current painting ability down to watching Dr Faust painting clinic and actually committing to practicing layering
dude your video was like a waterfall of validation to some anxieties about painting and you really deliver on making this hobby and craft accessible. Thanks for making this!
your so right about this, and the next step from that point is to understand (and practice) wet blending and finally to understand specularity (or shinyness) the more shiny you want that part of the model to look the closer the tighter the blends should be and the lighter the final point should end. on this matter painting gems and glass and other translucesnt objects should transit to darker rather than lighter where the light hits - BUT the specular light is refelctive and so inside the darker point you need a spec of light reflection. Keep painting friends!
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 id say somewhere between the 2. honestly practice is required to know whats right.. and whats right changes with the ambient temperature.
I consider myself deeply underprivileged not to have taken an interest in Bob Ross during his lifetime. But I also consider myself highly privileged to have taken an interest in you, Brent, during both our lifetimes. And i say this with the utmost respect for you and your amazing work. Thank you very much for sharing your painting experiences!
Nice approach! I like buying cheap "easy to build" space marines (since they are a little bit cheaper) to try different paints and highlights and this approach is so rewarding. Especially what you said about there being an "ugly phase" before it comes together. Looking forward to more videos from you.
A while back I started taking on painting in general, not just painting figures, but painting on canvases and digitally. I discovered really quickly that if you start freaking out about how things look in the early stage, you're not giving yourself a chance to take them to the later phases. When you said that line about "ugly phase" I felt that. When I realized that is a wiggly line toward a goal, I found my attitude toward my work improved and it gave me a better relationship with my art which in turn meant I had more fun creating it. I'm glad you and others are out there encouraging other people in this way, bless you for this.
to get a nice transition, glaze the colours on in more than one pass. really thin paint, let it dry and keep working the same area just slightly bigger
By the Gods. This is so impressive. I liked the magma, dark blue and almost flesh tone second from the right the most. All these look amazing. That is the greatest improvement leap I have seen in your videos. I had a similar thing when it came to painting faces. I never got anything realistic like the magazine or box art. Then one day I had that breakthrough. Congratulations Brent
Goobertown Hobbies I think it will be sooner than later with the way you did the shields. Death Guard I found use the same technique but more purples and inflamed looks. But the basic principle of their faces only improved for me when I had mastered human skins. Good luck with the next evolution of your skills.
You know, I'm usualy one of these people, who don't take any advice and try figureing out everything on their own, even if it takes an eternity. But in you'r case I make an exception. This really helped a lot. Thanks!
This video was great for many reasons. On a weekend morning that smooth calm voice depicting an obvious skilled hand and techniques. There were physical demonstrations and articulate breakdowns of the actual subject matter and with software. I was inspired to pick up my brush and try some blends because that looks great! Thank you!
Just painted my third miniature ever, and after having watched this video, came up with a result that blew me away. I'm now convinced that this is something I really can do. Weirdly, I still struggle mightily with edge highlights, but I guess everybody's different that way. Anyhow, thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. It's made such a difference in my hobbying life.
3:32 Meow meow ! Those shied , looks really nice! All the colors! Can i do it ? I can DO IT ! Or can i ?... hmm. I might start painting some day. How are you doing there ? Not too much, corona related problems i hope Thanx for the video ! Keep them coming ^^/
Goobs, been binging your videos nonstop for the past week and I love the positivity and good vibes you put out in each and every one. Really motivating me to get my minis out and start painting again.
I have two cats that look roughly like those two paintings. I needed some fun colors as a backdrop... so I whipped up some cat paintings! The plan is to rotate the art hanging up behind me occasionally :-)
Well Brent I have taught classes and you run into people who just refuse to get the point that any technique is attainable with practice! You did a wonderful job showing the ease of creation! You stuck with it and just kept going! Well done! I am enjoying watching your videos and I appreciate your library! I do believe I have spent my time well on your channel so far and I am happy to have done so! Thanks for keeping it real! Please take care and be safe out there!
Brent this is brilliant. Thanks so much for sharing this. Exactly the barrier I need to break through in a simple, concise and easy to follow video. I'm excited to try this now whereas before I kept avoiding it thinking I would ruin my mini.
As a person new to miniature painting, (so new in fact that I'm waiting on some of my supplies to be delivered still from Amazon, haha) I really enjoyed this video, more so I enjoyed the part where you said trust the process and trust yourself. That is really encouraging to me! Watching videos like yours on RUclips has heightened my anxiety a little while I'm waiting on my deliveries. Thoughts come like, man, these guys are so good! Do I even have what it takes? Maybe I should just quit before I even start. But then I come across a video like this and it gives me that boost of confidence and excitement for what's to come. Thanks, Brent! You're videos have already been a huge help, and once I actually start, I'll definitely refer back to a lot of them. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into this and your other videos, and want to thank you!
Thank you!! I've watched a TON of videos from the pros, none of them break things down to the basic levels that you have. You definitely have an empowering and humble way of teaching. Would love to see more like this.
Thank you for taking a picture of each end result with the colors that you used. Going with the teal for the skin tone and the dark blue for the scales on my lizardmen blood bowl team.
Like a lot of folks right now, I've busted out my paint and minis again. Your approach and tone are amazing, and this video, for me, sealed the best parts of your "Everyman" presentation. Keep it up!
Hi Brent! What a fun video! I've been watching ur videos since the start and I love ur laid back, relaxed style. It chills me out and fills my mind with painting ideas. I have a story I would like to share. I've been watching the 3 colour challenge and thought it fun so a couple of months ago I bought a box of squigs. An hour after I got home I found out my best friend and work colleague had taken his own life, and I had a breakdown. After 3 days I felt I needed to do something to stop falling further, so I painted the squigs for my friend. They r all different colours, the mushrooms the colour of his football team and the bases black for how I feel in my heart. I took them to my local GW and the manager put them in the display case so my friends from work can go and see them. This video made me think of these squigs. I wish I could show u the pictures of them but I'm not big on social media so not sure how I can. Thank u for all ur time making these cool videos. They always make me happy!
I'm so sorry to hear that :-( I'm glad that you shared your story though, and I'm glad that you found a way to start to process your grief constructively. I'm sure that you made a beautiful little squig memorial :-) I'm wishing you & yours all the best!
Thank you so much for this and all your other videos! I just started with painting minis about a month ago and your videos gave me the confidence and basic instructions to start this! I like especially that you always go into the depth of things to show how it works, and also show the DIY way, so I don't have to run and buy all the available washes and glazes and paints, because you very often show how to reach the same effects with simpler means! That is great for someone just starting! Being a scientist myself I really loved your videos about the stripping the models! :-) Keep up the great work!
Your an insperation sir. I love your break down of this technique and your voice is super soothing and encouraging! Definitely coming back for more of your videos.
I used to paint 15 years ago and youtube wasn't a thing, so I never get passed the basic techniques. I recently retook the hobby and with this video I finally understood and made a breakthrough. I had the same stuff going on on my mind as you were explaining your thought process. I can't express how much gratitude I have at this moment because of your work. Thank you man thank you so much :)
I started my painting journey a few days ago and your vids are playing everyday since! When I was a boy, I clearly remember my dad watching Bob Ross's painting tutorials on VHS tapes and wow, next thing you know, I'm watching yours on the tube! To me and my son (haha) your our Bob Ross ;) Thanks a lot for what you are doing ! Cheers from Montreal !
When I get to the messy stage, I experience a *tilt* moment where my heart sinks and I feel like the whole miniature is ruined. Pushing past that messy stage is where I am at currently. Thank you for your inspiration and encouragement.
You've spoken here about breakthrough moments and transitions...well, congratulations, this video has been just that for me! Mission accomplished Brent, thankyou.

It's funny, but it was in high school I learned about using the full range of light and dark in a drawing class which helps to this day painting.

boy howdy do i feel that in my soul.
Welcome (back) to the hobby, I believe in you :-)
My girlfriend told me something recently, that was really motivating: "Your efforts will never betray you."
Just keep going, it will pay off eventually!
On a side note, I have a big box of old saurus warriors in my drawer that I never painted, guess I know what doing today!
Excellent advice! Have fun with those saurus ;-)
Nice! Let's both keep painting our minis :-) and yep, stay safe out there!
Brent is the Bob Ross of mini painting. Wholesome, reassuring, kind, loving, and wonderfully charming
Literally the thumbnail made me so happy.
Hehehehe, me too! :-)
Well Brent even the most hardy artist will agree everyday is a learning curve that over time gives depth and finalization.
I really appreciate your positive encouragement. Very inspiring! Thank you!
The trick with the highlighting is to thin the paints morethan unsual so the transitions are smoother
your so right about this, and the next step from that point is to understand (and practice) wet blending and finally to understand specularity (or shinyness) the more shiny you want that part of the model to look the closer the tighter the blends should be and the lighter the final point should end.
on this matter painting gems and glass and other translucesnt objects should transit to darker rather than lighter where the light hits - BUT the specular light is refelctive and so inside the darker point you need a spec of light reflection.
Keep painting friends!
So it's more like a glaze than a paint?
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 id say somewhere between the 2. honestly practice is required to know whats right.. and whats right changes with the ambient temperature.
I consider myself deeply underprivileged not to have taken an interest in Bob Ross during his lifetime. But I also consider myself highly privileged to have taken an interest in you, Brent, during both our lifetimes. And i say this with the utmost respect for you and your amazing work. Thank you very much for sharing your painting experiences!
They look next level. Good job.
With your voice and attitude, you are like the Bob Ross of miniatures. So inspirational! Thank you!
I think my mind works like yours in this aspect too, I love when you use power point to layout your ideas like that! :)
These kind of videos are what make this channel great.
They really play to your strengths.
As someone who paints a dedicated Seraphon army this is awesome. This video has really given me ideas on possible futur paint schemes!
Nice! Me too heheheh :-)
It's so satisfying when you paint a mini and you just get to that one step of the process that you just enjoy more than the others.
to get a nice transition, glaze the colours on in more than one pass. really thin paint, let it dry and keep working the same area just slightly bigger
Hey thanks! Yeah this was a good day :-) I'll figure out faces too one of these days...
Goobertown Hobbies I think it will be sooner than later with the way you did the shields. Death Guard I found use the same technique but more purples and inflamed looks. But the basic principle of their faces only improved for me when I had mastered human skins.
Good luck with the next evolution of your skills.
I love this one. Allow me a pig metaphor: If we keep our snout in the ground and keep pushing at it, the truffles will reveal themselves in time! :D
#truffles :-)
You are so good at what you do, and the humble nature of your style just makes you that much more sincere, Thank you as always for sharing.
Damn, I've had this exact issue myself, and also collect Lizardmen!! I gotta try this out - ASAP!
Thanks Goobertown!
Perfect! Have fun, hope these 'lil tips help :-)
You truly are the Bob Ross of miniature painting. I can listen to this for hours :) cheers from Norway
Uploaded 57 seconds ago and it already has 7 likes, good job.
MintyFreshMetagross same
You know, I'm usualy one of these people, who don't take any advice and try figureing out everything on their own, even if it takes an eternity. But in you'r case I make an exception. This really helped a lot. Thanks!
Good work Brent, you really have upped your game! These models are quite impressive. It must be coming up a year since you started this channel right?
Thanks! ~1.5 years of Goobertown now, about a year since people actually have been watching tho ;-)
You're the only guy whose been able to explain this process in a simple, straightforward manner. Made a ton of sense to me, thank you!
3:30 And... CAT!
This video was great for many reasons. On a weekend morning that smooth calm voice depicting an obvious skilled hand and techniques. There were physical demonstrations and articulate breakdowns of the actual subject matter and with software. I was inspired to pick up my brush and try some blends because that looks great! Thank you!
Go get 'em! Have fun :-)
Would you ever do a Koopa paint scheme on one of these models? I feel like it would fit really well.
Whoa! That'd be fun! Maybe someday :-)
This man just levelled up and straight away put it out for everyone to learn that's a good human being in my book thank you very much 👍🏻
I just realized you look like Data from Star Trek just with long hair.
Who's real name is also Brent 🤯
Shahab Aga shit your right. I didn’t even think about that.
Not too much, corona related problems i hope
Thanx for the video !
Keep them coming ^^/
Goobs, been binging your videos nonstop for the past week and I love the positivity and good vibes you put out in each and every one. Really motivating me to get my minis out and start painting again.
I'm sure this has been covered in a previous video, but can someone explain the cat paintings in the background?

*Brent's Bicep in the intro*
You are the Bob Ross of miniature painting. Your videos are relaxing, educational, and inspiring. Keep up the good work!
I remember watching Bob Ross when I was much younger and could not agree more. As a software developer I seem to always want a method and a routine.
Brent this is brilliant. Thanks so much for sharing this. Exactly the barrier I need to break through in a simple, concise and easy to follow video. I'm excited to try this now whereas before I kept avoiding it thinking I would ruin my mini.
You can do it! :-)
So important to remember that you're always getting better, as long as you're trying!
Awwww yeahh!
@@GoobertownHobbies Thank u, Brent! That means alot! I shall be with u for ur future vids and look forward to them all!
Keep up the great work!
Right on!- keep on painting :-)
Your advice is amazing. When you said sometimes the beginning stages may look strange, but to keep at it...helped so much.
Mission accomplished Brent, thankyou.
those cat pictures behind you never fail to make me smile
Great job Brent to not many creators will put their flaws and admit their weaknesses in the hobby. Good job, you earned my thumbs up and subscription.
