Warpaints Fanatic and the Only New Paint Set That Actually Matters

  • Warpaints Fanatic is the next generation of acrylic paint from The Army Painter. In this video, we go deep on the 11-bottle starter set to really get to know these paints on a whole bunch of different models. Starter sets are super important for people who are learning to paint minis, so it's actually these small boxes that really matter! I paint the knight from the box, some warhammer 40k space marines, a dinosaur from one page rules, warhammer fantasy goblins, orcs, dwarves, and beyond!
    Spoilers, the new paint is MUCH better than the previous warpaint from the army painter, and this affordable little kit is quite useful! :-) These starter kits help to recruit for our hobby, and I'd like to see these in every nerdy and crafty store.
    disclosure- I received this paint kit (and others) as a free sample ahead of release. I have a friendly relationship with some employees at The Army Painter. I do not have a financial relationship with the army painter.

      Yes 100% I love mini painting and am very colourblind (pretty severe protan also). So I often just want to know what the colour actually is and it's a huge bonus to be able to see easily which colours are prematched as highlights/shades. War colours does this nicely but I don't like the gel medium. This seems promising and I really hope Vallejo goes this way too

  • @MiniatureMisfit
    @MiniatureMisfit 3 месяца назад +84

    Completely agree with you on your thoughts about starter sets, it can be so intimidating for people who are interested in minis to go into a shop and see the thousands of paint shades and such like. Little starter sets with a brush and minis is fantastic. I hope that manufacturers take note and make more starter kits with paints that are true single pigments so they can be mixed true. Having blue and yellow mix to a weird green grey can also be really baffling for newbies who know nothing of paint base pigments. Thanks for bringing this up Brent, as ever, you are an inspiration!

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  3 месяца назад +10

      right on! I think a lot of paints will at least need to have white as a second pigment for opacity, but yeah, I wish mixing ability was closer to what we get taught in elementary art classes. If they swapped the ultramarine blue for something closer to a pseudo primary like "~magic blue" it'd be a better color wheel. Still, not bad, not bad 🙂

    • @nobody342
      @nobody342 3 месяца назад

      @@GoobertownHobbies I want the colors and labled as if I bought a set of artist paints, and they would mix ( color wise) just like the artist paints, and the full common set of them also. Naples yellow, Burnt Umber ULTRAMARINE BLUE and so forth. THose are the colors I want to see in a set, then I can have a clue on how to mix colors ( not that Im good at it) but I can look at a artist color chart and know how to get the color I want.

  • @matiasfrosterus447
    @matiasfrosterus447 3 месяца назад +5

    Some notes on colour mixing.
    Our eyes have receptors for red, green, and blue (each receptor being sensitive to a certain wavelength of light). But paint is reflective so when light hits it reflects certain wavelengths and absorbs others. Red, green, and blue are the primary colors if you have a source of light (like a monitor). Paint doesn't emit light so there the primary colors are actually magenta, cyan, and yellow.
    So mixing red and blue paint doesn't make a good purple as you're mixing secondary colors together (red being magenta + yellow and blue being magenta + cyan). Incidentally, this is also how printers work (the whole CMYK thing). For purple, you should go something like three parts magenta and two parts cyan.
    And yes, we were all lied to in elementary school about colors and paint.
    So for a starter paint set where you would be expected to mix paint, the set of colors should be a rather strange one (as cyan and magenta are way more rarely used than red and blue). So I understand why Army Painter didn't go this route.

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  3 месяца назад +4

      yupyup! without mixing, cyan and magenta are waaaaay less useful to most people than blue and red, so it makes sense why the company went with "pseudo primaries"... but even so, the choice of blue hue wasn't great... Someday a brave mini painting company will launch a starter box with CMYK :-)

    • @jorgemontero6384

      @@GoobertownHobbies That blue is picked to look like Macragge blue from citadel, and that's a multi pigment monster which covers well, but only mixes OK towards highlights, and you better use something like ice yellow.

    I'm glad to see that this an actually suitable starter set for new painters to get their hands on - something I could grab & gift to my kids for their own jump-start into the hobby, for instance. I, personally, started in the hobby with the AP warpaints starter set - similar to the one tested here (flesh as opposed to gold is the most notable change). Too many of that set were plain awful for a new painter to try to use and I spent so long struggling with them that I didn't build any confidence until I started using other brands, and once that confidence took off I was able to experiment with techniques & processes. To this day the Ultramarine Blue is the worst paint I've ever had the misfortune to use.

      the retirement of the old army painter warpaints is going to raise the average experience of new painters by a lot! Finally we're at a point where most of the paints on the market are actually pretty dang good, and it's easier than ever to get folks started off right! Interesting about the gold flesh substitution, of all the colors in here, gold is probably the least important.

I’m a physicist and work with spectrometers and optics, and my research group is always enthusiastic about outreach, so if you ever wanted to explore this it would be easy for me to work on an experiment to systematically take some reflection and absorption spectra of a number of different paints/paint combinations and send you all the processed data. Love your channel and adore the way you bring a scientific eye to a hobby where there’s so much vibes based advice.

    I painted as a teen and I had the citadel red beginner box. When I came to get back into it a couple decades later I couldn't find a good beginner box. I ended up buying the army painter mega set because I found it on sale. With 50 bottles I've been happy with it, though I keep hearing that this generation of the paints are bad. I'm interested in that new mega set, but don't have the money for it now.
    I like the look of this starter set and it will be perfect for gifts. ❤

      @@GoobertownHobbies I'm super new to wargaming (December), and I really struggle having my paints look bright and clear, it always ends up muddy and dirty.
      Maybe I'm totally wrong in thinking AP is anything special here, but everything I see about AP seems so geared towards people like me. I've bought so many gosh darn GW paints and had no idea what the end product would look like. Often ruining the model for me...

    Your colour wheel mixing gave me elementary school flashbacks! The horror! Yes the unlabelled/multi-pigments really hamper individuals experience with mixing in general and is apparent with these selections. But that is an industry wide problem. Too bad, this deterrent may make people feel they can't mix their own colours and should just buy them instead...
    Jokes aside I'd probably gift this set to my nephew. Giftable is the best recommendation for any product.

    12:50 Brush-on primer is also really nice to have if you're painting a big showcase mini that comes pre-assembled or injection-moulded into a complex shape - I've got a dragon mini from a dungeon crawl board game that has its wings sort of domed up around its face; looks great as a pose, but trying to prime that surface with anything but a paintbrush is not something I'd want to do.

    Oh! you know what might be a great tip to include in one of these noobie teaching videos? a warm bottle of rattlecan primer will go on better than a cold one. letting a can soak in warm water before shaking and spraying will make it run thinner and you'll loose less detail on the mini. I don't wanna say "Airbrush like" but it is pretty close

    What a great video, some really important commentary on starter sets, and painting in general.
    I’m really looking forward to trying this range out. It’s come out at a time that I’m looking to invest in a new range to accompany the many I already use. High on the list of importance is not only a range that could substitute for Citadel in terms of colour scope, but also in its value and availability. For my own tutorials I like to recommend paints that cover all those areas, and it certainly feels like this could fit that bill. Just looking forward to being able to grab a few bottles to buy, I haven’t risked buying the big set.
