SORRY TO MINIAC AND MIDWINTER
Still show’s them love. Thought it was intentional, laughed all the same. Keep up the work! Can’t stress enough how much I rely on your videos.
So glad you corrected that. Great video.
I thought it was a joke at first. 😂
Rude.
It did make me laugh when I saw it.
I went through a phase of trying to "always improve" at painting and it honestly just made me miserable. I'm now happy getting ARMIES done, and making the armies look as cool as possible. Everything counts in large amounts.
The grabbing hands grab all the speedpaints they can 😊
It's funny because I had the opposite experience. I got miserable getting armies done. It felt like a grind. Once I stopped and just focused on taking my time with single models for as long as I feel like, that's when i started enjoying things again.
@@joshelguapo5563 Yep i've been doing the same. I stop painting a model when i feel like it's time to stop.
Honestly, you and OP don't suffer from not wanting to get better. You just probably were taught or showed incorrectly how to learn to paint. I've taught a few hundred people how to paint as a former GW staff member and painter. I have met many people over the years who have given up or basically said "I can't paint well, but I paint to a quality I like". There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it always hurts my heart bc I know the joy of really getting deep into the painting side and all the satisfaction of searching for new techniques. I think where the majority of people go wrong is that they are taught by someone who has winged it or just puts washes over everything. There's honestly only 4-5 basic things to learn that can take you 90% of the way to a high caliber paint job, such as thinning paints, learning how to separate/segregate sections on a model, some basic color theory, and finally just basic light theory. This all sounds complicated but only takes about 1 week to start seeing improvement. If that's all you learned and kept at it, within 6 months the worst painter in the world would be putting out good models.
Again, whatever floats your boat and makes you happy. Just don't be so quick to "stop improving". Instead, take a step back, and start over with a model. Pretend you've never even seen painting and watch a few basic videos. You'll be surprised how much of bad painting is not technique, but habit. I've had students that I've shown the basics too and they come back with sand glued to the faces to "show that the figure is battle hardened". There's nothing you can do for that except hope they have the gusto to one day ask "am I following the guides?". Just realize that somewhere before you get to "pushing" yourself and hating painting, there's a great zone of "painting for the enjoyment" of it that still involves trying new things, just not burning yourself out.
I think the best approach is to enter a new wargame with speedpainting, so that you can finish your warband, kill team or whatever quickly to finally play and get into the hobby/game. Later when you have some roster diversity you can take more time with your next miniatures and learn some more advanced techniquies
Speed paints helped me achieve my goal of being mediocre mini painter, I could not have done it without them.
You couldnt have You cant apply wash to a model and drybrush? These are literally the easiest things in painting and will leave you with much more saturated colours than any "speedpaint" will do. Because essentially, they are just a normal colour thinned down with wash.
I often hear "table top" thrown out like it's a "low quality" paintjob. I don't agree. Table top is like being a scratch golfer. It really is a quality level of proficiency. No, it isn't Golden Demon. But there's a reason Golden Demon exists. It is a MUCH higher standard. It's as if completing a triathlon or marathon is failing because you don't place top 3.
Table top quality really means you do a good job. It demonstrates that you are an active, proficient hobbyist.
Great review, Wyloch- Thanks!
Thank you for catering to me with your casual approach and unwillingness to try and master something that-- while still important to me- isn't AS important as learning the rules of a board game and ensuring I spend most of my time thinking about the GAME instead of painting plastic. This set seems PERFECT for people like you and me!
I'd like to share my favorite speedpaint trick;
Base coat in normal silver metallic, and then put a coat of speedpaint over it for instant metallic of any color. Because the speedpaint is translucent, the metallic effect shines through wonderfully. It also seems to reduce the "glittery" aspect of the micah powder without losing the luster.
Personally, I think the metallic speedpaints in the 2.0 line are too watery and glittery, especially compared to the results you can get from this trick.
My trick is to mix normal white paint with speedpaint mixing medium (transparent shite) to do the edge highlight.
Sand Golem over silver makes a wonderful saturated yellow-gold
Tabletop quality paint jobs are underrated. Those paints do seem to streamline the process. I really like your use of color in your models and scenes, so the paints make it all look extra nice.
Yeah, hardcore painting is it's own hobby, I'd rather have a bunch of nice looking en masse armies to play with than a half done army where everyone looks amazing from 15cm away.
Yeah, but a quick underpaint drybrush(slapchop) would elevate these a ton.
I love your painting space with the 2 archs of lights. And I gotta agree, theres something incredibly gratifying about seeing just a mass volume of minis.
The look your daughter gave when you filmed her really reminded me of my daughter 😂 that look of 'dad, you're such a nuisance'.
I'm yet to try any contrast paints, I want to but I'm still trying to get the hang of being consistent with normal acrylics, my tiny mind can only handle so much learning at once.
This is refreshing. It seems that the norm is to take painting as far as it can go, which is very fun, but sometimes you just need an army painted and good enough is good enough.
Kudos for the disparaging look from your daughter. Always good to see dad's being embarrassing on their kids.
People really over stress painting your miniatures to insane levels. The truth is you can paint the most insanely detailed figure ever.... but from 3-5 feet away on the gaming table you will barely be able to tell the difference between a 30 minute speed paint job and a 6 hour ultra detailed model. Your mummies especially look great, better than most minis I have seen at a gaming table.
Yeah the prevalence of very close shots of minis on the internet has sort of shifted the expectations a lot. No disrespect to those artists, they do amazing stuff, but a painted army on a battlefield with nice scenery is it's own kind of wonderful spectacle.
Im gonna be honest with you - the moment i stoped watching pros, that tell you to "not paint like pleb" i started having fun again. And really improving.
@@Repli_force Yeap. Especially in the wargame hobby just having all your models painted to any level already puts you 90% ahead.
@@Repli_force There are actual people like that??
Thank dog I do this just for fun 😂
Cool. Thank you for sharing.
Oh, we have Lasse the Video Wizard now so Adam can focus on being ON camera and not BEHIND it. So expect videos to improve soon.
I like that Army Painter is watching videos like this. But that’s their “slogan” these days; “We hear you!” Great community to be in!
You can absolutely get better at applying speed paints too! I have been painting with speed paints for about a year and I can tell I've gotten better at it. Still waiting on my Complete Set of the 2.0 paints to come in. You did really well on all these models! They look great!
When I first thought about crafting, I found your videos.
Here I am a few months later, and I'm almost done with a playable, two-story tavern/inn that's an absolute beast!
Speedpaint got me through 110 minis for frostgrave in 3 weeks. I totally suck, but they still turned out. Love the stuff.
Whoa, you take skirmish to another level. I love frostgrave. There's a really good channel for it called "bricks and blocks gaming". If you haven't seen that one, check it out.
@@jeffreykershner440 four warbands for nephews, warhounds, and multiple wizard options. Currently adding 30 more (ratmen archers, scouts, assassins, and goblin warbands) this week. Gotta try out those metallic SpeedPaints tho.
That's great, Wyloch! Painting is a many splendored thing so I'm glad you found your favourite paints! 😊
wow, this is actually really impressive, both the results and the tech of the paint itself
Thanks for the video! Great to see you having fun and being motivated by this painting innovation!
Thanks for sharing. The new formulas look great!
I'm impressed by your painting times. I've been using contrast paints for a while and it still takes me a while to get a model finished. I really hate being colourblind!
This was EXACTLY the video i needed to see, thank you for that!
Wow, this is kinda convincing me to go try them out. My main holdover with contrast paints has always been that I don't want my models looking different then other ones in the same army but for future projects this seems killer!
You have me psyched as well! Thanks for sharing that it’s “okay to be okay.”
I appreciate your honesty.
I feel the same way! I am colorblind and choosing the right colors for highlights and shades was very difficult for me. These paints help so much. Thanks for the video.
I started painting for the first time about 2 months ago to get my group's Frosthaven minis "table ready." I never intended to try to be a pro or go really far with it, I just wanted them to look better than the drab out of the box gray. I started with regular acrylics, and my first couple of models were passable at best. Doing that right was going to take a lot of time. But then I tried out Speed Paints with the 1.0 starter set. I've been hooked on them ever since. The only problem is I have to keep telling my friends "I'm not that good at painting. This is just because of the product!" Once I learned the slap chop priming tech and went to all speed paints, it's been a dream. I'm getting exactly what I was hoping for - table ready minis and the actual painting only takes me 15-30 minutes. Now I have 50 ish bottles of Speedpaint 2.0 and I love it.
Always a pleasure Wyloch!
Those look excellent! Thanks for the review.
I'm not a minis painter, but I am an action figure customizer, and the techniques and materials are the same. I haven't tried speed pushing on a 1/12 scale figure, I'm guessing it will less useful as the details are larger and not as tightly packed BUT I intend to at some point. I'm tempted by speed paints because frankly, I'm not a young dude any more, my fingers go numb on long paint jobs, my eyes don't always catch all the tiny sculpt details that could use a paint application, speed paint could, if it works at larger scale, make this process much quicker and easier
I've seen your mini's and they look good in person.
Great video! Thanks Wyloch.
I want to get into mini painting but it seems like their is so much you need and so much to learn i always feel intimidated.
This is probably the first video that made me wanna buy the complete set 😮 great results!
I LOVE your channel, Wyloch. I'm glad you decided to come back.
Just picked up the speed paint 2.0 a couple days ago. Im with ya. Love the new paint.
Whatever works for you, it's all good 👍
Dang, the models painted by your kids are super solid! Probably the best indicator of how well the paints perform. Someday I'll have to pick up some Speedpaints, but I should probably use of some of the paint I already have first. Seems like the perfect step after adding washes to the process.
that 1.0 was liquid gold if you get it save it. best paint to date especially the air brush capabilities and easy blending!
Well done !!! All the minis look great.
funny enough, i started to paint the minis on my boardgames for the first time like 3 months ago and since i didn´t knew anything about it i went with speedpaints thinking on just having a decent looking mini on the table... a month later and the spark of actually learning to paint well was there and i moved to regular acrylic paints and barely use the speedpaints anymore. (Still use them for some stuff, still like them, but now i want to be able to get the effects by myself)
I like the clear bases a lot.
game changers, love it! Awesome videos
Pre-ordered the mega set just now, thx for the heads up Wyloch!
I use them like basecoats and I love that when you highlight them they reactivate and tone down the highlights.
I will have to look into these paints more.
Thanks for the Video! Great vids!
I've found adding a basic zenithal primer helps a lot too! Making the recesses dark (instead of white/off-white) makes later steps easier as well.
I ordered the complete set! Speed paints also changed the way I paint for the better and they really make me enjoy this simple way to paint. I was not good with all the layering. I use my acrylics for eyes, drybrush and highlights now.
Unrelated to the paints but - I love that you've managed to get your kids into Battletech!
Hell, TT in general really... I wish I'd been introduced to the whole concept a decade-plus before I actually was
Great review and information!
Love these paints. Ive used both the 1.0 and now these, not much difference besides the bleeding and rubbing of some of the 1.0 paints. Thanks Wyloch!
"Overwhelm the eye with sheer numbers and it looks past the quality issues" ABSOLUTELY TRUE. I know a lot of begineers burn themselves out trying to get their armies done by making sure every single one is neat, highlighted, shaded, all to perfection. When really, your opponent is just going to see a mass of fully-coloured dudes regardless of how well painted each of them are. Nobody is going to look at your 100 orc army and pick out the paint job of an individual guy, they're going to go "holy shit 100 painted orcs!"
That is a really, really good point!
Thank you for the video! I did not know about pre-primed minis. I am considering getting into painting minis and that just tips the scale in favor of taking it on! Beautiful paint jobs. I am sure the kids enjoy it too!
Of all the speed/contrast paint videos I've watched, this one taught me the most lol. I was trying to be so precise, but you are getting the same results I get in a fraction of the time.
You’re not bad at painting bud! Just because you don’t paint competitively doesn’t mean you’re bad. I love watching you paint because you’re always creative and I love the results!
awwwww the daughter shot was adorable.
looks fun
Great paint jobs 👌
The first few tries I used the speedpaints I confess I've got a bit frustrates, but I soon understood that there is still a technique involved. Thanks for these video...
I just started using speedpaints and that tip about overloading the brush really answered my confusion as to the creation of brushlines that everyone says is fixed by using them. Thanks! It feels so counterintuitive.
Tip for stopper bottles squeeze / pore at a 45 degree angle to prevent shaker ball explosion. I sadly learnt this through the same trial by exploding paint too.
I swear by the four foot rule, if it looks okay from four feet away, then it’s good enough for the table.
One thing I learned with my first time with speedpaints is be careful what you prime them in, speedpaints are very transparent and will darken or be light based on the primer, I’ve got some very dark ogres now.
And also be careful with the amounts your using at once, not too much not too little, as I find it can actually pool and spread downward if you use too much.
That being said, start from the top and work down.
Thanks for video. Pretty hard on myself on painting. Will try the paints, thanks😊
I've been thinking of trying speed paint. Opportunity cost doesn't come up with my miniatures as needing anything beyond table ready. Thanks for this. I'll pick some up soon.
I think that the Metallic Paints are supposed to go over a dark base.
This video is a great advert for Speed Paints; the results look more than good enough to hit the tabletop.
They look great sir! Don't let yourself tell you any different.
Welcome to battletech. You're going to love all the technical details in the game. And thanks for the vid on the speed paint.
Excellent review I’ve loved speed paints for a while but your review convince me I need to get the set on speed paint 2.0!
Love BattleTech that was a present surprise to see! going to need and grab these paints then!
So far I have only used craft paint to paint miniatures. Seeing miniatures painted in a few minutes seems really impressive. I might pick up some speed paints in the near future.
It makes painting SO MUCH more convenient, believe me. I didn't until I first used mini paints and it changed my life. It makes it so much easier to get to wear you want
People knock craft paints way way too much, I've got some perfectly fine results from some. I think it's important to have a variety in your selection
The problem with craft paints is consistency: Some cover well, some cover like crap, some are thin, some are thick, and then the next batch of the very same paint will be different. Consistency is one of the things you pay for with actual hobby paints. Yeah, some craft paints are consistent enough you can rely on them for painting minis, but as a general guideline you're just making your life a whole lot worse and experiencing a self-inflicted pain in the ass.
Do note that in the video author painted only simple miniatures that are not extremely detailed. I use Citadel contrast paints a lot and it is basically impossible to paint so quickly warhammer miniatures with all those pouches, rings, belts everywhere
You can fix a mess up on a zenithal job but it’s tricky.
I keep the base primer color handy and will mix it will my contrast/speed paint and test it on primed plastic until the tone matches the area I want to fix.
Then I go and stipple it in gently over a few coats. It’s not always perfect but it’s totally doable with patience
Thanks for this video! I get intimidated by the pressure to always be improving, and that's led to me leaving some minis grey. It's nice to be reminded just how good a tabletop-ready mini actually looks with very little effort!
Slap-chop, contrast and speed paints totally changed my paint game too.
Great video! I have recently converted all my paints over to Army Painter, and I have the 1.0 Speed Paint set, ( l love them ) but didn't know of this 2.0 set! I cant wait to see the metallics, thanks for the info and tutorial!
I mean the mummies just look gorgeous
I couldn't agree more with you here about this set :-) I bought one for myself, just to see what all the fuss was about, and cannot believe just how easy they are to use, how fast I can get a squad/army painted so quickly and nicely, and how much my painting skills have changed in just a short time (Just over a week, and I've painted a friend's ENTIRE Wood Elf army up, and squads for Kill Team for others). After over 50 years in the hobby, I'm now more excited than I was when I first started out, way back in 1970 :-D This hobby always brings me more joy and inspiration every day, which is why I've stayed loyal to it for so long, and will NEVER regret one single moment :-D
You convinced me to buy a set, thanks dude
I just recently got my Speedpaint 2.0 set. But I've been using the 1.0 mega set and some Citadel Contrast for a couple years now. I love them. I've mostly replaced all regular acrylics for minis.
Great vid!
Looks perfect. That's the standard I aim for, too, and if it speeds up my current slow painting, it'll be worthwhile.
Dude, thanks for putting this video out. I had the 1.0 line of Army Painter Speedpaints...and the video footage in your video here made it obvious to me that the 2.0 line fixed the few issues I had with them. Looks like I have to give Army Painter some more money once I finish remodeling my crafting room at the end of the month!
I started with Speedpainting early last year as my first real run at mini painting and it's been great. I certainly don't do the ultra quick paint jobs you are talking about, but I'm pretty happy with I speed through in 30 minutes when I'm good with less quality and nothing that isn't huge goes over a couple hours. The nice thing is that you can put in more time on top of these (particularly with 2.0) when you want to do more detail work.
AP speedpaints are awesome! Indeed!
Great paint jobs and color schemes! I have the first Speedpaints and was disappointed by reactivation. I’m glad that 2.0 seems to have ironed that out.
I always dry brush my minis - love the dirty, worn look it gives.
Kids and Battletech is perfect!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Good video. Absolutely amazed at how quick you can get a model done to that level with hese paints. They really are a game changer.
Also, those mechs looked great in the end!
Try silver on a gold area, then use the yellow speed paint on the silver. Boom Gold!
Wow, really great video in terms of production value. And it's pretty clear there's no going back to regular paints.
Very nice miniatures 🖌️🖌️💪💪💯
I think contrast paints are great for basecoating and going back to traditional painting for layering/highlighting.
I still suck at painting too
Getting armies painted and enjoying the hobby is whats most important! Getting your kids involved is fantastic!
Results are even better with slapchop technique
It’s amazing the paint selections today when I started you had Testers and if you were lucky and had a few bucks you could get flesh or other special colors.
It's about to get nuts!
Man those look super good! I got out of the hobby cause it was just taking me too long to turn around mini's for my armies cause I was always trying to get better. This actually has me thinking about painting up my Heroquest Mythic Tier stuff and getting it on the table!
I love the speed paints!
1:51 when you listed the mini painting youtubers you mixed up Miniac and Midwinter Minis. Just FYI
