- I love painting Warhammer 40k, AOS, Necromunda, Bloodbowl and Dungeons & Dragons miniatures and now I go further than just the slapchop painting technique by adding highlights and stippling.

Don't forget to check out my Ebay page if you want to buy any of my painted miniatures www.ebay.co.uk/usr/miniature-hobbyist 🙂
which brush is that 10:31? The white one that has a large handle and then tapers a lot? Looks nice.
When dry brushing your miniature, it's best to use a rubber or plastic palette instead of an absorbent material like paper towel or wood. The reason for this is that absorbent materials can soak up the water content in the paint, which can leave a chalky texture on your finished miniature. While this is great for achieving a stone look, it's not ideal for other textures. So, to avoid this, it's recommended to use a non-absorbent and non-porous palette for your dry brushing technique.
Hey for your metals you should really really really try a blue it works pretty good I did it on my slap chop Ironworkers I use gray for their armor so for Metallic effects I wanted some kind contrast between the two so I used space wolves grey it works really good but it goes on more like a shade so it takes more than one coat you can do it lights and it's nice but I found a lot situations going darker looks more realistic but then the lighter side of it gives a little bit more of a NMM kinda feel
don't forget to stop smacking your lips during video dude, it's really annoying :( just a heads up!
Your slapchop videos are probably the easiest to follow for new painters. Your not a master painter, so its all plain english, and your just as confused as us most of the time, but you explain clearly, share the lessons you learnt and the results are solid and achievable. seeing your growth has been great and your love of painting growing warms my heart.
I am confused most of the time, especially with the correct terminology lol, Im glad you like my videos 🙂
Such an accurate and well articulated comment. This hits the nail right on the head.
Here is some constructive criticism that will vastly improve your slap-chop; Your dry brushing is still holding you back! First step is to get a proper textured dry pallet to wipe the paint off. Don't use wood or even plastic! Get a small pad of rubber (about the size of a wet pallet), then take some old paint you don't care about and slather on some texture by making think blobs and lines. Let the paint dry completely and you are good to go. Always place your dry brush paint on the pad as it too will dry after use and simply add to the texture. Next step is to properly moisten your dry brush before dabbing it in the paint. Take a sponge, add 1-2 drops of water in the centre, then dab the brush tip into the damp section and wipe all excess water off on your hand. You will eventually get a feel as to how the moist the bristles should be, but it should be damp and cool against your skin. THEN, dab the brush in the paint and use the textured pallet to wipe away until the desired amount is left in the bristles. Lastly, your technique itself. Use circular swaps across the model and not so up and down left and right (chaotic). Think of it like wax on - wax off but clockwise, counter clockwise in little circles. Follow this advice and you will get the smoothest of dry brushing that doesn't look so chalky and rough. 😎
Cheers for the tips, I will take a look into a rubber pad as I always start painting miniatures in this manner so would soon have a rubber pad with plenty of hardened txtured paint on it, cheers again 🙂
@@MiniatureHobbyist wood is fine really, but try and seal it somehow. So it doesn't suck all the moisture out of the paint in your brush. That's what makes it look dusty sometimes.
@@MiniatureHobbyist What you can also use to wipe off the paint are riffled plastic cups which you prime black. That way you have a pretty good idea how moist the brush is and how much paint actually is on it too.
that sounds real good, any chance you might know of a simple (idiot-proof) video guide on making a textured dry pallet like that ? :) DIY isn't my strong suit
@@ScgMatke If you have a hot glue gun, just put stripes and ripples on some piece of plastic and prime over the whole thing.
Absolutely the best part about this video is just how much joy comes across. Its just so obvious how much you are enjoying doing what your doing and that is contagious. I have 20 figures left of my Lumineth army that have been sitting next to me unpainted, and videos like this just get me in the mood to sit down and finish them! Keep at it! You've got yourself a new sub EZPZ!
I dont do a lot of slapchop, I tend to do your more standard painting. But I find your videos so relaxing and well put together. I like watching you get more excited to paint after you discovered slapchop. Someone here said you are easy to follow along with and I fully agree. So excited to watch you slapchop some orks again! Your stuff comes out VERY well by the way!
I don't even own any much less paint miniatures and I like his videos too. Can't explain why. Don't need to. 🤣
I've got to admit I'm really impressed at how much you've improved since I started watching. it's like when someone gets introduced to the hobby and you see them coming into their own.
Cheers Mark, I think its mostly down to me now enjoying painting and feeling relaxed when I do it 🙂
@@MiniatureHobbyist exactly! Keep it up.😊

I have a beginner question. For the drybrush step, do you need to use like wash kind of paint or normal paint??
Love this video. Clear visuals of how you're doing it, clear talk through, no obvious steps missed and just straight forward passion for the task at hand. Love it.
Just learned about slap chop in the last 24 hours. Your videos have been really solid and it is cool to see someone go from loathing painting to loving it. That you're exploring new techniques to your painting style like stippling is the obvious sign of someone getting engaged. If I may offer a tip, even when you're stippling please thin your paints out. Especially Citadel paints. Something I still struggle with to this day is the idea that, "less is more." I believe if you thin your paints out you will have better control over your stippling and achieve an even better result. PLEASE keep making videos!
Going back in after a Slap Chop has done the lion's share of the work and hitting the highlights was a good call. The stipple reeally works well to add texture. Nice work on that ! Man, that rust looks like a must buy. I bet if you used some glue and fine sand to add places that were really going to bits, the rust would be even cooler.
I enjoy your clear joy in the hobby. Not everyone doing videos radiates loving painting. Contrast / Speed paints have really got me loving painting again. I can layer paint, but having pre shading and washes followed by touch ups is getting me results I like more in less time and there is something to be said for seeing the stock of finished warbands or units pile up and be ready for play. The impact of fully painted armies and terrain at a "looks great from a yard off" feels more rewarding these days than painting for instagram clout.
Your enthusiasm is infectious! I sat down to paint a mini and wasn’t really feeling it but your video came on and I suddenly was having a blast painting! Thanks for the help!
This is exactly what I wanted to see--clear slapchop process AND how to take it a step further so it looks less like slapchop. Looks amazing; great content--well done!
What a wonderful video, and the results are remarkable! I've just gotten into painting myself, and this might be what finally gets me to buy my first Warhammer figures, thanks for sharing!
this was very well done mate
It has been very enjoyable to watch your evolution from hating painting minis to loving it… as well as watching your skill levels get better and better!
Love it!!! 😊
Excellent work man. That’s awesome that you’ve found a way of painting that you are excited about and find a lot of enjoyment from. Keep up the great work man!
Cheers Alex, painting miniatures does now bring a lot of enjoyment 🙂
I'm relatively new to painting myself, roughly only 3 years of skill, but I am really impressed by this one. You went above and beyond to add realism to your mini, and even textured his denim-jean vest, highlighted his muscles, painted his stitches, and added multi-color wiring to his (forgive me, I don't play 40k) gauntlet weapon(?) - wow, you sir have earned a new subscriber! Hello from Tennessee in the United States!
I really really enjoy your videos for practical painting applications! You don't just "make things look easy". You discovered that indeed very easy technique for you and you wrapped your head around the perfect mediums for this and show it to the world. This is so good. Because it's real. We all want armies. Not just three, four display pieces. Despite what the Slapchop haters say, this is the most effective technique for people who simply don't have the time to paint the models to bring them to the tabletop. There are really just three channels I get back to for when I actually want to learn more about efficient and good painting: Miniature Hobbyist, MarcoFrisoniMJN and Geek Gaming Scenics
The results you are getting these days are really good. Quite enjoying watching these!
Looks great. Painting = love.
You've done a great job of him. I've been watching your videos for about 6 months, your painting is improving all the time.
Cheers Matt I appreciate that and yup there is lots more room for improvement 🙂
I love your videos, I was scared to start painting but after seeing your videos when they came out I have been painting like crazy lately :)) thanks for the inspiration ❤
Hi Emma, thats awesome to hear and yup if I can do it then anyone can 🙂
Inspiring! Watching you enjoy what you are doing is very motivating.
Thank you, I am loving every moment of painting which makes me want to try new techniques 🙂
Nice work and I love the idea of clear bases so no matter what terrain your middle is on it will show through
Excellent, love the result and all the joy spread in this vid. As beginner slapchop has been a real gamechanger as frustration was growing.. not I'm having a blast and getting completely addicted !
i love it!! Very nice result
Great video mate. Gonna definitely follow this
I have enjoyed watching all your content and watching the progression you have made with your painting.keep up the great work brother.
Cheers Jake that means a lot 🙂
This is how videos should be made. Painting for the fun and not to try and sell yourself as a professional. Great job.
I just started painting(and enjoying it) too and really like your videos! For me, Speedpaint and Slapchop was the same breaktrough, this stuff is really amazing!
The next time you want to do some yellow stripes you could try to put first a warm brown so it covers better in next layers and also it leaves a better shadow for the yellow which over black it tends to get green
You my freind have a very steady and precise hands, explained everything well, enjoyed your video and will definitely follow it on my maybe 2nd or third mini, I havent started yet but you sure encouraged me.
What an amazing painting time, sweet to watch, wish with time I'll manage to apply some of your tips and skill. Thanks again a lot. Cheers.
Well done, he looks really great ! You improved quite a bit to say the least ! The enjoyment shines through !
Great video especially when anyone just looking into this hobby is looking for information and processing. Looking at all the paints out there is confusing enough I am glad you broke it down to the paints you were using. Thank you for sharing your craft.
This helped me so much I have been buying miniatures recently and am really struggling with even just getting things off the sprue but always thought warhammer looked so cool as a kid having a slow walk thru like this really helps!
Great minis. That clear base idea is really interesting I’ve never seen that before cool 👏🏼
dont take too much notice from the comments, it looks great mate, keep doing you and enjoying the best hobby in the world!
I've been doing the same type of progression. First AP speed paints, now some stippling with highlight colors. Try to drybrush the metallics on at some stage too. It gives an awesome look and feels really satisfying!
Great video! Learned a lot about slapchop.
Awesome video, your excitement's contagious. Makes a fella want to go try all this stuff out immediately. 😄
Love the video! Something that I'm going to try with this technique is to prime with something other than black, like a brown or red. I think it might add some subtle colour to the shadows and recesses, particularly on the skin.
Obviously it was pretty obvious that this video would obviously teach me exactly what I should obviously know about taking slap chop to the next obvious level. Obviously I'm grateful for the work put in to bring this video to an obviously appreciative audience, obviously. Stay obvious.
amazing progress for 7 months between the 2 models.....great painting and great video
Love those colors, real vibrant. As an amateur painter I enjoy your new found love for painting and trying new ways to improve your techniques
Cheers Ronald, this is a great hobby and always something new to learn and try 🙂
Man this is the first slapchop video that I've watched that it instantly made sense. Thanks for this! Great video! New sub here.
Thanks for including colour choices
Thank you very much for all the time and effort you put into the content for us mate (:
I think you're on the right track with your stippling and rough edge highlights! Because the overall texture of the model is so chalky from the drybrush the stippling and roughness just comes together with it and makes for a very stylistic looking orc! Your techniques work really well with each other.
You're also right that this ends up looking very good for orcs.
Thanks for sharing! I can totally feel the enjoyment. How do you protect your minis btw? Do you spray some sort of varnish? What do you use?
I'm completely new to this hobby and I love your approach and honesty. Liked and subbed.
Great tutorial. Very satisfying to watch you paint this dude. :)
*_Always_* do the lightest dry brush/edge highlight with the brightest silver/chrome *_After_* finishing rust effects.
It will really enhance the effect and takes seconds extra. Otherwise really liking the look for the time investment.
I just bought a small army painter speed paint set - and I'm loving the whole slapchop method. It's looking really good and so quick! I still suck yeah.... but it's getting better!
Obviously another great video ;) just got the Ork combat patrol box, can't wait to get started!
For someone who didn’t like miniature painting your skills are now top notch. You did a fine job with those orks. Really nice.
These look great!
Lovely vid! I like the style, and LOVE the leather colour you pulled on the backpack. Such a a great discussion in the comments too, it decided me to invest in dry brushes again, as i thought dry brushing was always supposed to be chalky, but looks like it doesnt have to be!
Thanks for sharing your odeas and technique 👍
dude thannk you, this is wonderful.
Looks really good.
Glad you enjoy painting, stranger
Really like the vibrant colors, looks great!
Cheers me too 🙂
Love it: like listening to a civilized ork (like a kommando) talk about painting orks. Very meta.
I'm getting back into miniatures after over 10 years away. This is definitely how I'm going to be going about everything. Cheers! Thanks for making it easy to understand.
Great 👍🏼 have to go back on the desk
wow this made me want to try my hand with contrast again, thanks for this
Looks great
It's been a very cool experience watching your painting journey.
Thank you so much and there is still lots for this old dog to learn 🙂
Probably should of saved all my comments til I finished the video but hey, algorithm right? Haha on a serious note though, you really do have some of the best beginner painting videos out these days. I stipped the hobby for about a decade and recently got back in. Ive gone over board with my army and an army for both my sons, plus way to much terrain 😂. Im going to start painting again soon here and your videos really help and are easy to follow which helps mitigate some of the dauntingness of having about 8000pts of 3 armies, tons of terrain and 8 killteams to paint hahaha thank you. I really hope to win the stormtrooper killteam too, my oldest would be so insanely thrilled haha he loves Vader. Sorry for the rant, but thank you for the videos!
great job, I ❤ it
Great video!
Great vid mate
7:30 lol. I'm just getting into this and well obviously, I enjoyed the vid. ; ) The double dry bursh over black is a great idea. Love that over the spray method.
I've been painting miniatures for 26 years and I found this video to be interesting. Keep up the good work, mate.
It has been great watching you improve and change on here as a builder and painter.
Cheers John, I am loving every moment of it and trying new things is so much fun 🙂
Looking great! :)
The clear bases are a really nice idea
If i learnt one thing? Ive learnt about a billion!
First time I've watched one of your videos. Great job my man - obviously 😅
Great videos thank you. "Yeah" is by far your most used word😂
Yep I’m new to all of this, but love watching your videos, thankyou for your time…very envious of your paint collection….can you tell me how to seal the painting once I’ve finished, the rust paint you used don’t know if you know you can also get a moss and verdigra version….
That storage diorama is awesome...I need this 😃
I love that you have such enthusiasm for slapchop! Others seem to look down on the technique. I will also be dipping my brush straight into the bottle from now on. Not wasting paint on a palette? What a rebel!
I've won a timed painting contest using slapchop. felt like cheating. lol
It's just a trendy name for a technique that's been around for ages and ages .
@Shaun Taylor Yes, but it was not so easy or popular before contrast paints. Anyway, I like the name
I dont like wasting anything, I see every drop of paint as money lol 🙂
As long as the paint in the bottle already has the consistency and the colour you want, that's fine. The purpose of putting it on a palette is being able to manipulate it and mix it.
People looking down on it - sometimes it may feel that way even though it's just valid information. You're giving up some precision, and there's a part of your skill set you're choosing not to hone. So it ends up being a matter of priorities. If you don't care about those things, that's fine. Just be pragmatic about these things.
But do be careful about dipping it so deep. You're getting paint and binding fluid deep into the bristles. It's not good for your brush health. That's another disadvantage of dipping directly, you're not gonna be as precise about how far you dip it, but each to their own.
Trousers mate!
I do love the comparison at the end. They are both cool but the latest one is pretty amazing.
Second one is an awesome job!
Looks great! If you want an uneven finish for things like hazard stripes, try using a sponge! Even a cut up washing up sponge will do well :)
Obviously, I appreciate the hard work that went into this video.
Hi! Great Fan of your Videos. Im enjoying painting too, and all thanks to slapchoping and Videos like yours. Are you using any varnish when you finish, to protect the paint? Cheers from Spain!
Cool channel bro! keep up the good work
Digging that stippled look
Noice job mate, cheers Graham
Love your slapchop videos Jon
Cheers buddy, much appreciated 🙂
Hi I changes slap chop a little and now are local club all use it under coat in gray (Not black) 1st dry brush lighter grey then white works fantastic
Those Stipled Hazard stripes look really good and really approachable compared to some of the other ways I've seen definitely gonna give that a try. 👍
It is *such* a relief to see a video where someone makes little mistakes on-camera and still gets a good-looking miniature at the end, like when your edge highlight on the Power Klaw came out too thick and you cleaned it up with a finger. Like, oh shit, this guy struggles with the fine details and shit like I do but he's doing fine. Makes the hobby feel approachable.
This technique also makes it easy to hide errors too. Wrong color somewhere? a tiny bit of gray seer and re-do with contrast and bam.
Yup I am a simple man doing a simple paint job and mistakes will always happen but just go with it and enjoy all the happy little mistakes 🙂
Hey, love the video. Can you explain your painting handle? I’m about to paint parts of a model separately but no idea how to hold them without putting them on bases (which I want to paint separately)!
Hey! Where did you get such awesome storage room for Orks? It's perfect for storing the team!
Thanks for the guide, it's also awesome! :)
Two person drinking game, one takes a shot every time he says "Well", the other takes a shot every time he says "Yeah", see who needs to get their stomach pumped first.
Glad to see slapchop has taken so many people from painting ambivalence to loving that aspect of the hobby.
A lot of people were down on the technique when is first made a resurgence but it's been a net positive for the hobby.
Hello! A good tip for the dirty down rust is to put a bit of water with it, it makes the rust effect even stronger and realistic.
I've been saving my dollary doos since your first slapchop video to afford a speedpaint set, and today ive finally got enough. Probably wont be able to get the 2.0 mega set any time soon but i'll just be happy if I can put some paint on a mini and actually like how it looks. Cheers from Australia!
For the prime and the gray and white what are the brands and type of paints that you’re using? Good video!
