Bill Frisell just plays things no one else thinks about.
yeh ... and it's universes apart when - Due to the much-earned Majesty & Creativity of Frisell - he is noticeably cringing at a 2nd rate hack like Rob B. (playing is mundane --- voice is even worse). Yet, Frisell, simply does his best to ignore Rob's vc. & keys for much of the 3 hr. + Show ... (needed, at least the caliber of Chimenti, to hang with Bill & Phil) . . . just plain awful.
@@teneyckfrederecksen9964 oh shut the fuck up. Calling rob b a hack? Dude is a musical genius regardless of your opinions. I had the opportunity to Interview him regarding music theory and approach to grateful dead music and the dude has a musical brain, why so butthurt?
Do you know where America is mentioned in the Bible ??????? Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!!
for the love of god phil please do another gig with frisell and billy martin
Bill Frisell is unique. An innovative musician!
Set 1: Here Comes Sunshine > The Wheel > Eyes of the World > Turn! Turn! Turn! (1), Cold Rain & Snow, Crazy Fingers > Jam (2) > Uncle John's Band
Set 2: Jam > Dark Star > Bird Song > St. Stephen > The Eleven, Mountains of the Moon > Fire on the Mountain, Not Fade Away E: When You Wish Upon A Star (3)
Comment: (1) played once before by Phil & Friends, on 6/24/12 in San Rafael
(2) with "Jessica" teases
(3) instrumental
(1a) Bill Frisell recorded "Turn Turn Turn" and released it on his album "Guitar in the Space Age".
This is a great set list to show off Bill Frisell's playing!
Thanks so much for the video of this great show!!! #ihavenocomplaints
Luckily Bill Frisell does not listen to all those "Jazz-Snobs" commenting on how he "wastes his talent on playing with 2nd class musicians" and just plays. Band sounds fine to me! Thanks for the upload!
danogzilla: I totally agree. Billy Martin was THE MAN that night. His light touch on The Eleven is particularly tasty.
Martin is so great here
He's always great
EXCELLENT ~ DOES NOT GET TO MUCH BETTER..!!!
WoWZeR
Oh what coulda been! Would have loved to see a smaller combo with Bill and Phil! Lebowitz and Barraco are clueless on ensemble playing having to fill EVERY beat. Geez! Like here we have one of the if not THE most innovative guitarists of the past 20 years sitting in. BACK OFF! LOVE the Grateful Dead! Hate jam bands!
Dan Lebowitz makes me think of that skit in Portlandia with "Spike", the terminal hipster: "What!? Oh, man--THIS guy is hangin' out here!? This show is OVER!!!" I love Bill's playing in any context--although he is a bit tentative here pretty much throughout. But every time he starts to lay down something that has real possibilities (often, actually), there's Dan to step all over him with his high-end, piezo-driven farting. Bad--bad--pairing here. I wish Stu Allen had been on board that night as the second, supporting "guitarist-who-actually-knows-the-tunes". Allen is probably the ultimate Jerry emulator in that he knows how to lay back and let the music go where it wants to--which is something Frisell, of course, is famous for. Not happenin' here much at all, though, unfortunately. Apparently Bill performed his Guitar in the Space Age project the following night at the Crossroads with his own group. Wish somebody would upload that.
piezo-driven farting!
Lebowitz, you're ruining it. You remind me of band rehearsals when I was 15. Guitar player turning up and up and up and up, drowning out the other guy.
harmonics....everywhere... ASMR.
drummer is very good.
A true master
Real music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Dan Lebowitz looks like a parody of a guitar player. Kinda sounds that way, too.
Nice Steely Dan "Josie" references right before, and at the beginning of Fire.
I wish lebowitz would play under Frisell more and on top less. He's oblivious to leaving space for the kind of subtle interplay possible between Frizell and Lesh- who are both masters of coming from an unexpected directions. bummer ,
Samba C I agree...second set they open up alot more. way more enjoyable set then first for me
I mostly agree, but a few tunes in it does seem like Frisell is enjoying his interplay with Leibowitz--assuming smiling a lot reflects enjoyment. I would like a bit more space for Frisell though, as you say. Overall, sounds pretty damn good though. I think.
@@jsoon71 I think Bill was being polite. Dan was stepping in all of the open space.
Yeah, probably so. Can you imagine being asked to sit in with these guys and then stepping all over Frisell like that. Fucking Bill Frisell!

what a waste of bill frisell's great talent. lebowitz just stepping all over the always subtle & laid back frisell. hopefully phil & bill do it again with bill the only guitarist. interestingly had seen frisell at the vanguard and barraco and some of his dark star mates were in attendance digging the proceedings.
+skiadikt Turn Turn Turn was obviously included because Frisell has it on his Guitar in the Space Age allbum, but even on that song, Lebowitz doesn't just step aside and let Frisell play
I think Bill is bored with this stuff, but tolerant.
Pretty dreadful. How did Bill allow himself to get roped into this?!
