    John Mayer's guitar playing has been flying under the radar for years. Some may think he's an ass but the guy is one of the best blues guitarist around today.

      +Stratisfied Flying under the radar? The guy must have a couple platinum albums under his belt, successful tours, and Clapton invites him to the Crossroads guitar festivals. I'd say he's pretty renowned.

      When Eric clapton says John doesn't know how good he is, I would say that's not flying under the radar. Ever since Try! came out in like 2005 everyone knew right away.

      i find stu one of the greatest guitar players ive ever heard ,he really knows his sound , kind zero ego , awesome dude ! i think phil is kind of a dick to call his name whenever he is in a pinch at his fine club that i love , but never brings him to the east coast , actually capitol theater is all he ever does guess i cant blame him at 80 years old , but he must be insecure that stu isnt a big enough name as he seems to put together just plain silly line ups at some east coast gigs , personally id take stu over anybody alive right now to play lead dead guitar , big fan of anders too, course the jrad boys can play as can madson ,,,,guess im just pissed because now i live in philly after five years in marin and i dont get to here stu several times a week

    What an amazing concert! One of the things I like about John Mayer is that he seems to like playing outside of his comfort zone. He looks determined to do right by the music and other players here, staying true to the spirit and the style of the Dead without upstaging the rest of the band. When you throw such an accomplished guitarist into this mix, it becomes clear that what Phil Lesh & Friends do is probably a lot harder than it looks!

    Mayer really pulls this off... Instead of asking himself "What did Jerry do?" he asks "What would Jerry do if he were me?"... a hard question to answer. A lot of players can replicate the licks but, Mayer seems to replicate the spirit of adventure that Jerry had and, at times, almost gets carried away with it.
    Job well done by the whole band, and, I'm glad John wasn't singing... I've never really been a fan of his but, he's A LOT more tolerable with his mouth shut.

I'm so glad I saved my money for Dead & co. I think youre right about the style of playing of Jerry and being an overall better singer, but what I think is the kicker is the energy. Watching John, you can tell he is putting his all into it. These shows that he is one: willing to learn it all, and two: that he is way more than capable of learning it. The energy is amazing, the way it used to be.

    Is Stew playing Jerry's Travis Bean guitar? I believe the guitar is still owned by the Grateful Dead. anyone know? And for those of you who are hating on Mayer, you just haven't listened to enough of his music. Someone else mentioned it I think. John Mayer Trio. Check it out. And also, Trey stepped up and delivered this past summer and I am not a Phish fan at all. In fact, I had big doubts. Not that I am anyone special but I do respect the Dead's music and especially Jerry's approach to it. We all know he can not be replaced but I'm sure he is smiling down on these talented musicians paying tribute to the music and introducing it to upcoming generations.

    A great matchup, if I ever saw one! 3 great guitarslingers & Phil playing his kick ass bass lines!!

    stu allen is the untouchable. if you disagree with that, you obviously haven't studied Jerry's guitar technique and sound. stu doesn't miss a beat! He is truly a special breed. As for mayer. in my opinion he will be great at this, he's extremely talented and also has natural soul in his fingers. I don't expect him to do anything but impress all of us this winter!! because of funds I will only be in St Louis for one show. and I can't Flippin wait!! personal note. stu should have played far the well.....

    I'm starting to fall in love with the Dead now. Is it too late? Am I too young? 20 y.o. here.
    BTW, It's good to see John in a heartwarming and fascinating musical journey. I'm listening back to his early albums then now. Wow. His music defines him. It's like his brain and soul is projected to all of his songs and guitar playing. It's been a week since I started listening to the Dead. If there's any song that you would love to share to me to start-off please do. I currently like Cream Puff War. Please suggest. :)
    I'm going to keep these videos of them and share to my sons and daughters in the future. Where everything that they can see and hear makes sense. This kind of music must live a hundred-fold.

    John told us in "In the Light" that he's tried everything in this life but love, true love. I knew since his live Gravity days this was his direction in life. I can't wait to see where he lands in 30 years. It's not his guitar skills that are amazing, it's his ability to learn, apply and appreciate. Our pasts are behind us, John belongs as a Headlight on this new North Bound Train.

    This is a crisp and exciting re-enactment of classic Grateful Dead. I'm extremely pleased. The Other Ones did a comparable job. Notice how every Grateful Dead resurrection depends on two to three Garcia guitarists? The job is overwhelming. From the beginning, the Dead realized you need two drummers. Without Garcia, it becomes clear you also need two lead guitarists.

      @TheTestingGrounds 8 лет назад

      +Patrick McLellan I disagree. I got this music a long time ago, and no matter how good John Mayer is I have a lot to base my opinions on. There are others I'd choose over him, which in no way indicates I think he isn't talented and obviously successful. He certainly helps draw new fans to this music. I've seen a lot of them commenting on these videos.

    • @SirPatMcLellan
      @SirPatMcLellan 8 лет назад

      +TheTestingGrounds I love the Dead too, but the problem isn't with John or Trey. The problem is nobody will ever be Jerry, and you can choose to listen to this stuff, or not. Debating part is stuff when there's no argument to begin with. My point was that him playing with these guys shows his ability/versatility as a guitar player; not that he is Jerry. I find it interesting how some people love John filling in, and some hate it.

    • @mattgrimmer3337
      @mattgrimmer3337 7 лет назад +1

      Listen I think there are a number of guys who all bring their own flavor to the "post" dead era, and they all have their place. I personally am not a huge fan of Trey with the Dead, but some are. I love Jeff chiamenti, I think Rich Robinson has done an....interesting....turn with the music. I absolutely love Haynes, but Im not in love with his "The Dead" turn, but I've heard him do stuff with Phil and Friends that I loved. You gotta love Jimmy Herring when he does pretty much anything, and of course Stu and Scott are great here as always. I think you could make a strong argument that John Kadlecik's turns with Further were quite magical. My personal favorite has and always will be Steve Kimock, that's just my preference. Now, all of these guys sound like Jerry in some ways, but they all have their own flavor and style. I think John sits very squarely in that arena, and I think he has a definite place. It's almost impossible for everyone to agree on someone, other than Jerry that is....hahahaha.

      Neil Waudby While I agree Mayer is great blues player, I disagree with your assessment. The reason this sounds so good (as does say Phil & Friends with Trey and Page, etc) and that Dead at 50 won't sound this good is because, as much as I may have loved The Grateful Dead back when, Bobby, Mickey and Billy just don't maintain the level of musicianship anymore to carry the band. It's just a bit of mess having to play with those guys these days. Bruce, Jeff, Trey and Phil with Pete, Alex and Scott would also sound worlds stronger then what GD at 50 will sound like in Chicago in my opinion.
