Never have been able to make a connection with Dead music. Of all things it took John Mayer. He wasn't ever alive in 1977! He is however a true triple threat and one of the greatest living players. Clapton has said as much.
Impressed as always with Mayer. He is intensely focused here - Dead music is not something you can just jump in and riff. For me he brings the quality of this music up a notch or two.
Dan Stout Agreed, but even as a big Mayer fan, I think hes an insanely overrated soloist. I would go as far as to say that its not his strong suit.
LOVE hearing Phil's warm-up lines :)
John Mayer just keeps getting better and better at Dead-Jamming. Last night, he seemed a little bit nervous in the first set, but proved himself in the second set, especially on Saint Stephen. Tonight, he looks much more relaxed and confident. That was a sweet Jack Straw, with the double guitar jam and seemless transition from one jammer to the next!! Prior to these shows, I had no idea that John Mayer had such talent! Go, Johnny, Go!
Jonathan Gal Spot on man, he looks way more loose in this set. He seemed nervous the whole first set. The St. Stephen solo was great but he missed a lot of grace notes you know he would normally hit. Good to see him evolving in front of our eyes.
Jonathan Gal I have always said that he is a phenomenal guitar player, but he has been hiding it. I guess because he thought he could make more money doing "pop" songs. Hopefully now he has made enough money and will do what he was born to do -play the guitar. Look up some of his older stuff and you will see what I mean about his guitar-playing ability.
I haven't heard anything to BUY yet, but I think he's handled his career very well - went to Berklee and picked up business sense (and dodged the Berklee 64th-note training), then started doing basically a SRV tribute act in Atlanta bars. Somewhere, Columbia saw the lips, the cheeks, the hair... he really only did the one-man boy-band thing long enough to gain some financial clout, then started his blues trio. I THINK he's even starting to sing somewhat less like the unholy product of Betty Boop & Tiny Tim! Just SING the fucking song, John.
Jonathan Gal not gonna lie, i thought he killed it on the 12th too but he seemed more prominent in this show
Look where we are now! 😁
I hope John is loving playing even1/2 as much as I'm loving his playing.
Notable JM solos:
00:32:20 - Mississippi Half Step
00:42:10 - Jack Straw
00:52:30 - They Love Each Other
1:12:50 - Deal
+Matt Morgis Straw was nasty.

Phil's moans around 39:00...priceless!!
I got goose-bumps during jack straws
Lot of good guitars on that stage, but mayer stands out while still being humble.. can't wait to see him rip it.
Mayer is just killing it,great tone
That amp he has is so sick. Wish I had 4 grand and like another 12 grand for that freakin guitar....
Don Meeger is a disgraceful sub standard self important wanna be a rock star guitar player to Try to cover Jerry’s miraculous iconic masterpieces. If you think this is good Go listen to Milly Vanilly look it up. It’s perfect for you
That jam in Jack Straw is redick...wow.
i bet everyone in that room was like WTF.. and Mayer killed it

26:50 -- show start
he forgot to mention mayer was born in 1977!
Stu and Scott (Metzger) are both really good players, but Mayer is in a different world!! He truly 'gets it' and it shows. Also, Guberman (Pleatha-Neck) is the fucking man.
Great sound, and concert! I really liked Cassidy! Bob looks like he's having a great time up there!
(and someone has to make a jam-band joke. 'I heard the singer was 6 months pregnant - and gave birth during the 3rd encore'...)
Wow, this guy sounds very close to Jerry (in Halfstep especially)!
You mean the guy with the white guitar? Do you know who he is?
I am totally digging this! Thank God for music. Jonathan I also loved that smooth transition between guitar solos during Jack Straw. JM ripped it up! Being someone who tolerates and appreciates pop, albeit with a discerning ear, I've liked John Mayer for many years. He brings immense talent and soul to whatever genre he embraces: pop, rock, blues, etc. Also... Go Jeanette Ferber! Her very pretty voice completed the harmonies. She held her own amongst those cool cats. Yeah!
well I'll say this for her, she's definitely sounds a lot like Donna Jean....
SUPER. WE ARE ON THE SAME WAVELENGTH THEN. TTYS>
sounds like jery on half step ~!~~
My father wrecked a 911 in the same manner as Mickey Hart. Took a turn too fast, slowed down during the turn, and fishtailed into a granite wall. This happened near my home in Massachusetts. The car was totaled, but miraculously he survived, unhurt. The irony of the story is that if he had held his speed, or even accelerated during the turn, then he would've probably cleared the turn without a wreck. It was the slow-down/braking that caused the fish tail. This also happened in the 1970's, but I don't recall which year.
this is a great gig, really! Wonderful line up, lota soul and great set list. what's not to like here?
Phil looks good.
Exactly Perfect....(Y)
The jam in looks like rain all thow calm is cool with all three guitar players kinda picking in and out of one another
So why the heck didn't Johnny get the job playing lead for the Fare Thee Well tour? He's great!
'Why didn't Stu?' is an equally valid question
it's spelled Dock Ellis. He was indeed tripping while pitching that no-hitter.
Last Fair Deal in the Country!
The silly side wants to say;
"OK, imagine you've got Buddy Holly.
And likewise imagine, along comes Ken Kesey, who says,
'Can YOU, Buddy Holly, pass the acid test?'
And out pops John Mayer!"
I'll I've got to say, is, if that's not Mickey Mouse on Stratocaster,
then I don't know what is.
All in all, it has some of the (nearly ceaseless) Dead-type noodling, but on the whole, I gotta confess, pretty damn good!
.....and John Mayer was born in '77
Too bad the audio on this is clipped. Next time...Red on the audio meters is bad.

The 3 chicks behind the keyboard player are with phil
That drummer is a pocket son of a gun, who is he? Damn he's good.
Well there are two drummers on stage, but I'm assume you're referring to Simon Smithete Lavezzoli. Honed is skills in the south Florida Grateful Dead tribute band "Crazy Fingers" for many years & currently plays drums for Melvin Seals & JGB.
TheLuxuriousHippy The guy on Phil and Johns side
He also wrote a great book, "The dawn of Indian Music in the West." Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan's school and the greatest band that ever was (of course), the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This is the first I heard him play.
TheLuxuriousHippy oh man what about licolovellete now
What is the interviewers name?
Funny to see how the "failed" shows still haunt Phil. It's OK, bro - you don't have anything to prove to anyone...
this aint no 12 bar blues mr mayer, learning to play guitar very differently in this setting
Hunter Bax Exactly, and I still hear that really simple stuff come out in even the most recent stuff. Half of me is super surprised he was able to change up his style to such an extent, the other half still hears the cheap soloing. (big mayer fan btw) but I feel like I can recognize guitar playing, just started listening to the dead, and jerry can really rip when we wants to, and stays very low-key with it too. honestly I would think Jerry Garcia is just a guitarist who got lucky from being in a 60s band that ended up getting popular by chance and he was just able to practice a lot over the years, but there's something about his playing that stands out
Stu keeps breaking out these Jerry garcia looking like guitars.
thanks
Like Donna, the chick is pretty hot but mostly superfluous.
+John Dough Worse than superfluous; perpetually off key!
+John Dough She also danced like Joe Cocker
Yeah, if you're gonna be off, at least be interestingly off.
Don Meeger is the worst most self important sub standard clueless Jerry “cover” guitar players of them all. He cannot comprehend Jerry’s timeless without a net masterful genius humility he delivered and the weight behind it. Don Meegers guitar playing is best described as sometime bringing in a boom box blaring a CD of a Grateful Dead show at a Grateful Dead show competing with the volume of the show itself.
