Tried to make a different type of video this time, discussing some aspects of PC gaming that have been for me an obsession in the past and how sometimes that can take away from your enjoyment of the game. Obviously I'm not against upgrading or running your PC flat out constantly. You should always game the way you want to. I just wanted to offer my perspective on this and that even a 1 or 2 generations behind hardware can provide a pretty solid gaming experience.

The biggest annoyance for me at the moment is those that state "if it can't do it native it's trash"...

"It can't do it native it's trash" line of thinking is very close minded imo. Not that there's anything wrong with preferring native res of course but the reason why its close minded is because if you understand PC gaming you can't apply that line of thinking across the board. There will always be games that cant run at native 4K 60 for example with every settings maxed out, even with the best hardware, especially with ray tracing in the picture. It doesn't mean the hardware is trash, it's all relative.
Upscaling tech's really advanced these days and continues to get better and better. There's a lot of utility in that.

    • @Spratty-wb3is

@TerraWare it's the type of line that comes from the same people that see no difference in RT on vs off in cyberpunk but see artifacts and blurry textures at 4k with quality upscale 😂
Now I know RT doesn't always have much impact in some games and upscalers aren't always at the same level in every game.
But it can't just be a blanket statement.

Living in a tropical country with lower wages, I prioritize efficiency to keep electricity costs down. I undervolt my hardware aggressively and using Rivatuner to maximize performance without my room becoming a sauna (two birds getting stoned or something).
While I enjoy optimizing/maxxing my setup like tech reviewers, I've realized it detracts from the actual gaming experience. AAA or most titles don't necessarily need ultra settings or triple-digit FPS. I miss the simpler days of gaming without obsessing over hardware specs. Now, I cap my games at 60 or 90 FPS, tweak settings until my PC fans are barely audible, and focus on enjoying the game. The beauty of PCs is you can adjust visually settings to match the hardware.
Generally you don't have to upgrade ones hardware to play, just tweak settings.
DLSS seems to induce "lag" in CP2077 for my system and found native gives better frame pacing despite lower frame rates.
Aiming for a locked 90fps native by adjusting settings gave the best experience, even if it cost a lil'bit of visually fidelity.
The difference between Max settings and optimized Med/High actually look fairly similar. Having good game smoothness is preferable to slightly better graphics.
    Always remember a 21" 1080p monitor looks identical to a 42" 4k monitor... more isn't always moore!

I agree with the maximum power section. I also own a 4090 and like all other high end cards, it can generate quite a lot of heat, and during warm days this is very annoying. However it has so much brute performance that with underclock/undervolt/fps cap/DLSS you can lower power consumption drastically, like you shown. Using DLSS, high settings instead of ultra (other than textures), and fps cap gives a much cooler experience and also more consistent.

First of all, that was the cleanest Native+RT+PT comparison I've seen. Also as far as maxing out stuff goes I find it pointless, I always encourage people to tweak settings instead and save power and gain more performance. With smart tweaking you will never notice the difference in new games since they look so damn good specially UE5. In UE5 you can drop everything to low and Res scale to 50% if you want and it will still look stupid good and detailed, (at least in Hellblade 2 and LotF) which is awesome for lower end hardware. I'm guessing nanite is responsible for that? Not sure.
Anyways I was planning on upgrading to the 50 series but the 6800xt is still serving me extremely well and on top of that I find myself not really caring for 99% of new AAA releases, sure they look great but in most cases I find the gameplay going a step backwards (that is completely subjective of course). I keep going back to older games all the damn time and to make matters ''worse'' I instead decided to buy a retro handheld console (Powkiddy x55, ordered it couple days ago) so I can play all my favorite games from N64, NDS, GB, GBA, SEGA etc. on one single device anytime anywhere.
So yea personally I'm extremely happy with that and as far as new games go I find that indie and AA releases atm are a hell of a lot more fun and less demanding to warrant a hardware update. Again what I'm saying is 100% subjective ofc. just a matter of taste. Gameplay is king for me and no matter how much I appreciate great visuals they still come second to that the moment I start moving my controller sticks.
Great video man, all very solid advice you put out there that hopefully people will listen to.

Obviously I'm going to max out my setup one day, but I see it the same way as sports cars. Yeah my altima is not enough to enjoy driving, and much of it is a headache, but buying a lambo won't even change my experience by all that much, so getting 80% of the way there with an entry level quick V8 or I6 coupe is just as good without sticking out like a sore thumb. Obviously the money I saved on using my friend's free 1050 was not worth the headache, but boy, that 3060 laptop I replaced it with got me every experience I wanted for so much convenience and bargain. Is it a bit noisier than I'd like? Definitely not using this as a music server (I have a DAP for that), but gaming/movies with headphones on? No problem, this isn't music where I'd be pissed about having anything over the room noisefloor masking the low bass even with audio running. (Granted, I have it on a positive pressure laptop cooler)

Maybe when Creative Assembly tosses out Empire II or something and this 3060 mobile can't run it at 1440p 21:9 (not to mention if they add ray tracing) then I'd consider an upgrade and retire this one into my backpack and as a console with the living room TV (this 3060's got a long life ahead of it for fighting games and my RPG backlog since the last time I had a dedicated console...which was the PS2 back in high school). You'll be all set for a long while with a 7900XTX. I have one its solid. Probably best bang for buck for raw performance

@TerraWare actually you were the one who convinced me for the nitro+, back then, when your channel was named TerraNiegra. So we have the same GPU model. I always check your channel for new releases, to check the playability of the new game. I love how you make the optimized settings videos, always helpful. Keep going❤

Raytracing to me is all about proper lighting, not about just getting extra reflections. But it depends on the title as well.
For example, GTFO thrives on light and darkness, it would be so good with raytracing. Eve would look good as well but needs it so much less. Little Nightmares would be good with it too. Inside would look even better than it does. Ori and the Whisps could use it very well.
On the other hand, Limbo does not need it and I see little use. Both FAR titles could do without. And why add raytracing to the Total War titles at all? Abzu looks too cartoony for it to be of use.
It is just devs no longer needing to bake lightmaps, shoving the work off on to consumera at home. The bonus is accurate lighting. This is how it will be in the future.

I Just need 60 fps to be happy .

Yeah for me 60 fps is my minimum although variable between 50 to 60 with VRR is still fine. With handhelds I'm willing to compromise even further.

Six months ago I went from an RX590 to a 7900XTX and I said then, I will say it here. A good game at 4K 144hz doesn't suddenly become bad game at 1080P 60 and a bad game doesn't suddenly become good because you went from 1080P 60 to 4K 144. For those of us attached to Keyboard and mouse, RX6600 is still the budget king. For those happy with a controller, XBox Series S.
Putting $6000 in to a PC I only used for 120 hrs of gaming, Putting $600 in to a PC and getting 12,000 hrs out of it. That would be my FOMO.

Current AAA games are trash. Most of them seem to be made by reject movie directors making walking simulators. Indi and emulation is the way.

That's why I went with the 7800X3D and 7900XTX and 1000 watt PSU 80+Titanium, to save cost on both price and energy bill. If you care about fidelity of sound, visual and performance you go PC, I don't like the Glosiness of RT, makes everything look like shiny rubber. If I didn't care about fidelity, I would just go console, same reason I have $15K 7.4.6 sound system, with Emotiva Sound Processor, Amps and Speakers and not a Soundbar.
