- A friend reached out to me asking if I would help with a brake job that the dealer wanted too much for. I said sure, and honestly it was so cheap/easy I would just do the whole job for free. So Kash brought over her 2014 Ford Fusion and we got to work. Brakes are pretty easy but Ford had something up their sleeve to make sure it took a bit longer than expected. The lug nuts on these models have a cap that mushrooms out and makes it all but impossible to get the correct socket on to remove them. 4 of the lug nuts had to be replaced just to finish the job!

Thanks for helping this person save some money. In the 80s and 90s, my mother was a single mom of 4 boys and she would have really appreciated this diagnosis and help. Our cars were always rusty beaters that may or may not pass the state safety inspection. But they were our lifelines to groceries and family.

The lugnuts are originally 19mm. When the jacket swells, you can use either a 19.5mm or 20mm socket to remove them. She was kinda hot but JR treated her like she was a car buddy dude lol *fistbump*
That explains why they wanted to charge her an extra $100 to replace them all... and they would've failed again! 😬
Yep they were on my Focus ST too, first thing I bought for the car was new lugnuts. The stock ones are garbage and Ford knows it

I replaced my swollen lug nuts with a one piece set of lug nuts on Amazon.

My mother-in-law had her brakes worked on last year and the shop charged her $1,200 to replace the front rotors and pads (on a Toyota 4runner). I was so pissed, but she was the one that made the decision to have someone else do it instead of me (I had offered).

1200 bucks. I could do front brakes on my car more than 6 times for that. Replacing rotors and pads. Won't even have the car long enough to do that many brakejobs

I love doing disk brakes. My Dart is full drums all around and I've done many brake jobs on it since I got it in 79. Disks are so much easier but I have all the tools to do them now. All the family fleet are 4 wheel disk now, life is good. And good on ya for helping her out. She had a great sense of humor and attitude and did what she could to help.
Soon we'll be seeing JR cruising around picking up happymeals in a Honda Odyssey 🤙

Next time, crack the bleeders when you push the brake caliper piston back in. Crud ends up at the bottom of the system (the caliper) and you don’t want that getting pushed back up into the system. Fluid looked surprisingly good though.

Good man. I have done the same sort of. Changed all the locks in a2 story house for a woman who's ex was getting in and moving breaking and taking stuff. Also replaced shelves in her built in wardrobes fixed her daughters car and her sons drive bel adjusters. All because it was the right thing to do no other motive. Always pay it forward.

In 30+ years, I’ve never had swollen lug nuts, until i got my Infiniti G37.
Fortunately, I was about to rotate my tires, not stuck on a side of a road with a flat.
I was sure surprised when a 21mm wouldn’t fit and a 22mm was too loose.
CTA tools makes a 21.5mm socket and fits the swollen lug nut.
I put that socket in the car, so if I did have a flat, I could take my wheel off.

On my 2013 fusion I destroyed several lug nuts with a 20mm. Turns out I had to get a 19.5mm which fits perfectly on all the factory lugs

Ford lugnuts are famous for swelling. The cheap polished cover on them gets moisture under it and then it’s game over.
Same on my wife's 2014 Cherokee.
Same with Chrysler lug nuts since at least the early 80's. When I got my 2012 Jeep GC one of the the first things I did was replace them as they were already starting to swell even though they don't salt the roads up here.
Yep. Had the same issue on my 2013 Fusion. Had to change them all out after about 3.5 years of buying the car
