    I think Chevy is taking the right approach to EVs, not focusing on making them unnecessarily as fast as possible off the line or high horsepower but focusing on the main crux which is range. Non sports car ices aren’t expected have crazy sub 4 0-60s so why should EVs? I’m not an EV tech by any means but I’d assume letting go of wanting to make an EV super fast and powerful would allow the battery to be focused on range, which is how it should be.

      The average vehicle is now 13 years old, that's average not the oldest. Until they show me what the MSRP is for a replacement batteries when I'm 10 years into ownership, I'm passing. Hyundai just got caught for valuing a replacement battery at more than the cost of the vehicle brand new!!!

    • @thatissomeBS
      @thatissomeBS 2 месяца назад

      @@BoopSnoot The average ownership for a new vehicle in the US is about 8 years. The lifespan of the battery is more than that. Even then, realistically, if you have a 13 year old EV, it won't need a battery replacement, it will just have less range. So a 2024 Equinox EV will just have a 225 or 250 mile range instead of the 315 mile range. Maybe that won't work for you anymore, but someone on the used market will happily take that.

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 2 месяца назад

      @@thatissomeBS "The lifespan of the battery is more than that" Tell that to all the people getting batteries replaced under warranty before 8 years, and the BMW i3 owners fighting with BMW to get their >75% capacity batteries replaced before their 8 years are up only to be bamboozled as the shops twiddle with settings and temperatures to get it to squeak by. Also, everyone is well aware that advertised EPA ranges are nonsense, and no one is getting close to advertised range. But its not just a range issue, its that when the battery throws up a fault code, you can't pass inspection and so you can't get it insured or registered until fixed, and the replacement batteries cost more than a brand new vehicle.

I would much rather have flexibility on where I stop but I find with limited fast chargers it truly dictates where you can go on road trips and the destinations are another 5 to 10 minutes out the way adding to the travel time. I agree that the charging speed of the Equinox is fine. However IMO the low energy efficiency requires more kW of charging power to get the same charge times as a vehicle with greater efficiency. The "smaller" battery capacity, still a healthy 80+ kWh, doesn't really help the time needed to charge to cover a given distance.

    I own a ‘23 Bolt EUV. I drive 90 mi round trip to work most of it highway. If you don’t accelerate uphill, keep accelerator steady to only lose 5 mph, then accelerate downhill it is possible to get 4 mi/kWh in spring and summer. If a person buys an EV for home town commuting, work taxi, grocery getting- they will be happy. I would not suggest an EV for someone who doesn’t have the ability to charge at home. It is not cost effective to DCFC all the time, and it takes too long to Lvl2 charge unless it’s at work. Lvl1 charging might be ok if your commute is typically under 30 miles round trip. People just have to do math… I think that’s the biggest EV problem of all… right?

      IDK how impressive 3.0-3.2 mi/kWh is. Model Y gets about 4.2 mi/kWh and is larger. Kia and Hyundai EVs also are much more energy efficient than the Equinox. Note that these values are energy from the battery. EPA measures energy into the car from a L2 charge point, and that is more indicative of what it will cost to run.

It's an awesome time to buy an EV right now. Forget the politics. Have you ever driven one for a week? I've not met anyone that isn't a total corner case "I drive 40k miles a year" that is never going back to ICE after having a long-term driving experience with an EV. I agree. However if enough EV’s were affordable, that would over load the market existing, unreliable charging infrastructure. The current $40-50k price range places the purchasing demographic for people who likely own a home, can charge at home, and not apartment or condo dwellers that can’t can not charge at home. One GOOD thing about EV’s - thieves are WAY less likely to steal them, and commit crimes in them. Also less likely to be a noisy nuisance in the street. When the charging speed and infrastructure can support more cars charging more often, less expensive EV’s may become available.
