I think any "normal" person would just roll into any station at 15-20%, not have to worry that much about whatever surging problem, plug in, walk around whatever store is there for 30 minutes, and then come back out to a car with plenty of power to get another 300 miles down the road. It's cool to see these taken to the extreme for the sake of videos, and to see what is better, but it often just comes down to how the charging stations are that day (this includes the Superchargers, as there was a time or two he had to replug).

1350 Miles in 24 hours in a 2018 Model 3 AWD LR. We got the call, my mom was in hospice, only a few days to live. After a couple of bad overnight drives, we have always stayed at hotel. We decided this trip warranted an over night drive. The Model 3 and the supercharger network performed flawlessly. The two things that stood out was autopilot and how comfortable the seats where for the passenger to sleep. We averaged 57 MPH. It was mostly in the Northeast and the Midwest, where the speed limits are 65-70 versus 75-80 for the race. The faster speeds might change the average speed.

What a fantastic series guys. Incredibly educational and this is the kind of content that will really help with EV adoption in the future.
EV companies need to downplay the “total range at 100%” number. I understand that marketing wise it is what ICE drivers understand but the usefulness of the driving distance on a 100% charge is interesting at best and misleading at worst.
I hope they focus on and improve the overall charging curve of these vehicles. How fast my EV can DC charge from 1%-80% is a far more important metric than overall miles. The longer an EV can hold 250-350Kw during a charging session creates far more time savings on road trips than the extra mileage you may get one time off your 100% home charge.
When I roadtrip in my EV I still never charge to 100% at home because I charge up as much as I need to to comfortably get to my first charging stop and then begin the charger hopping experience. I get that for serious road warriors stopping every 150 miles is not acceptable, but for those of us with kids and pets it’s hardly a sacrifice. I just want those stops to be 1) filled with reliable charging infrastructure that delivers the kw it advertises, 2) the car charging curve to accept that max power for as long as possible before massively tapering off (up to 70%-80% would be amazing), and 3) there to be some minimal amenities where we stop for food and bathroom breaks.
Can’t wait for your next series like this.

Kyle....first off...THANKS SO MUCH!!!! for the content you create and what you do for the EV community. I love watching the Out of Spec channels and your content is very informative and entertaining. Second...I have an idea for you. Now that we have seen what expert road trippers can do in these cars, I think the public and I would love to see what would happen if this race was done from a different perspective. That is, making the same trip but doing as a Non-road tripping expert. Just punching in your destination and following the car's trip planner. Let's see how long it would take the car and the charging infrastructure to get just your normal Joe that knows nothing about EV road tripping to the destination and/or back. After all the goal of most, if not all, EV manufacturers is to make it as easy and simple to travel with these cars as possible. I hope you will consider my suggestion.

    • @ArtiePenguin1
      @ArtiePenguin1 Год назад

Unfortunately trip planning is a necessity for any EV driver. If you choose more budget options, some EVs don't even give you a competent trip planner at all (like E-GMP cars with Gen 5W infotainment system). The best solution I'd say is just to use ABRP (a better route planner) and not bother with most in-car nav or trip planning.

I’ve almost never had good charging speeds with EA Chargers. At a charger, get 40’ish. Brutal numbers. The limited times I’ve used EA chargers, typically 3 out of 6 chargers are actually working. This is in WA. I think one out of ten I get over 100Kw. Maybe it’s a west coast thing?

Model S trip planner issues: I had one trip where I was going from a ChargePoint DC fast charger near Northwood, IA, to the Tesla Supercharger in Eagan, MN. The distance is 99 miles, and the trip planner was estimating that I would get there with 74% SoC, leaving the ChargePoint with 90%. Mind you, this is on I-35 traversing much flatter terrain in southern Minnesota.

This was both entertaining and informative. It definitely solidified my allegiance to my gas powered vehicle and diesel semi. I don’t have the brain power to deal with all of these calculations and worrying about types of charging stations, battery temps/conditioning, all of the other variables that influence how it charges. Wild ride though.

If Kyle had drove the Taycan he probably would had won this race. He never would charge a Taycan to 94% to arrive with 17% at the next stop. But anyway great race, nice run form everyboady and thanks to all of you, it was a pleasure to watch.

Well done, so great to see EV road trippers that actually knows what they are doing!
Here in Denmark youtubers/car magazines thinks they are showing how EV road trips are but in reality they are charging to +90% everytime and arriving with ~30%, also usually they want all the EVs to be charging at the exact same locations. - and when we tell them they are doing it all wrong and could easily be 2-3 hours faster they just ignores us.
Cannot wait for the next road trip or cannonball attempt😎

Really a fun video. With that said having to turn off the AC (when it's 110), hoping a charging station unit is free and works, waiting or long periods of time to charge, all the planning that has to go in to figuring out how to get to your destination, I'm not ready to give up my ICE vehicles. I don't have to think about it. I fill, up the vehicle, use the facilities, and I'm out of there in five to ten minutes. There's no anxiety with an ICE vehicle. When you get low on fuel there's always a gas station only a few miles away and they all work. I like EV's a lot but the technology and infrastructure has to continue to improve. I will own an EV someday. Just not yet. Cheers!!!

What happened at the superchafger at 2:51:00 likely is that the first cabinet which was tried is limited to like 130kW somehow.
The second cabinet however is limited to a total of 270kW like a normal V3 cabinet ist. So in total there might be around 400kW of power available to all Supercharger stalls combined. As 3 cars were charging there the Model S didn't get the 250kW as the DC converters simply were on their limits. Then the other cars tapered of and the speed for the Model S increased.
Generally V3 Superchargers with only 4 or 8 Stalls might be slower than V2 Supechargers as the total power available is less than on V2.
