Voltage however allows current to flow much faster with less resistance. If you increase the voltage, you decrease the resistance which in fact minimizes thermal losses and becomes very efficient. So the reason why the Genesis is capable of such high input of power at high SOC is because its pack voltage is high which with less current delivers a lot of power.

It's been known for a while that in a 1000km road trip (~8h20m trip in an ICE car @ 120km/h) there are already a dozen EVs that are only slower than ICE cars by ~1 hour (about 6 of them even less than 1 hour)...so you really got to go very long distances to start noticing a sizeable gap lead between ICE and EVs. And I guess that's one of the points of making this video series, because 1 hour slower after 8 hours of driving doesn't look much, but when you're talking 40+ hours, cross road trips, it starts to add up, and it only gets worse with lower temps and cheaper, less efficient/lower range EVs

Can’t believe I just watched this video. I was surprised by the Ioniq 6 consistently getting high charge and being able to stay at peak charge rates like the more expensive competitors. Definitely on top of my list for next EV.
3:35:00 I'm surprised the Tesla folks are not using the predicted range on the energy screen. That has been the most accurate comparing it to the NAV estimated range that I've seen in 100+K of road tripping.
I was noticing that too, hopefully they stop. Plus, they were going under the speed limit in the left lane while they were being passed by cars in the right.
I road tripped my Ioniq 6 this year partly in the same area (San Francisco to Wisconsin and back) and found that I could quickly pick out EVGo or EA stations at 350kW for a 15 minute stop every 250 miles or so which made for great time! I feel like some small factors are adding up for the Ioniq 6 team here but it’s hard to say from the footage. Battery temperature management related to speed and power load is some part of it, but the other part is bad luck with EA stations.
With the pace of EV infrastructure, it will be interesting to see how the tech in this video holds up if you rewatch it in 18 months. You mentioned that Autel has a factory in NC. I hope that all their employees and employees' families are OK after the disaster.
True. For instance there will be way more 800V chargers for sure. Buying a very fast charging 800V EV like the Porsche Taycan or the full 800V EVs from Hyundai/KIA is future-proof and your charging speeds of 18min from 10-80% SoC will still be at least somewhat competitive even in a few years from now (crazy that the Ioniq 5 has been available since 2021 already). Buying a 400V mid-size EV with 10-80% in ~26min like all the Tesla models right now is already outdated and will be a huge disappointment in a few years from now when others are charging in 10-15min. That's why it is so important to wait for the Juniper facelift of the Model Y to evaluate which areas Tesla is improving on and by how much or by how little. The SR variants have quite some room to improve, 10-80% in 18min, or 3.3C, is theoretically possible, for instance in a 65kWh battery with 215kWh peak charging power. For the LR models there is little room to improve as the 400V architecture limits the max input. A possible 86kWh battery in a LR model could charge with 2.9C, which is around 21min from 10-80%. However due to the high amps on Tesla's 400V system the charging will probably slow down due to thermal issues, just like it does in current models, and therefor 22min is more realistic. 22 min vs 26 min is at least some improvement. A 92kWh battery could only take up to 2.7C, which realistically means at least 23 min from 10-80% at Tesla's superchargers. People need to look more ahead at the important technical developments happening right now when they are buying an EV. If they lease for 2-4 years then that's less of a problem though.
Yes, indeed. I was shocked to see that at some of those chargers, they paid for an 80% charge of their EV nearly as much as it costs to fill up my car's 19-gallon tank in Massachusetts.
@@pierrojules Did anyone sane actually thought that EVs were going to be much cheaper to charge than ICE cars, forever?! It was always fairly predictable to me that charging an average sized EV battery of say 80kWh will end up costing almost as much as filling a standard size 60L gas tank, sooner rather than later... at least in public EV fast charging!
1:41:03: The communication happens toward the top of the pins; I've found it helpful to physically hold the connector firmly against the car during the handshake.
One thing to note is that, in the real world, EVs will charge overnight at hotels on a trip this long and this would allow them to skip en route charging stops and compete even more against the gas car.
Ideally yes. It is hard to find hotels with level 2 chargers in some areas. Even when they exist there is usually only 1 or 2 plugs and they may be broken or in use. Hopefully this will improve rapidly over the coming years.
@ agreed, but I was talking about the real world. If you take your EV instead of your combustion car on a trip this long, the overnight stay will make the times a lot closer
Amazing video! Thank for you the education and the entertainment. One thing I’d suggest is always give yourself a 5-10% arrival target. Having to save a percent or two by turning off A/C is never worth it even in a race. You’d want to keep up the morale and help everyone feel as refreshed as possible. Also multiple times cars had to drop speed to make it to the next charger, another indicator that a 5% extra charge can go a long way.
I have been at that Missoula charger on a trip from Seattle about a year ago. Everything was broken. Thought that I'd never be able to leave again. Nice to see EA hasn't fixed the problem a year later.
Watched the whole thing and I must say about two hours in it got pretty confusing. With so many cars, you need F1-like graphics showing every car's position, state of charge, and miles to go to the next charger. Hey Netflix, Apple TV, or Prime Video, are you paying attention?
I have a 2014 model S 60 and I do several 500+ mile road trips per year. Love the car. Free supercharging for life. Charging stations are plentiful and you learn the good ones to stop at. Re-invigorated my joy for road trips
Brilliant video as always, with one notable exception. Every single time at least one person says "splash and dash", can I recommend "volt and bolt" as a much more electro-friendly alternative?
2:30 Mercedes in the left lane....forever. Apologies for my harsh tone but this portion of the video totally pushes one of my buttons. I have to do multiple 300 to 500 mile days every year. In your video, no one in the right lane. No one in the left lane except you. You are the definition of highway lice that make trying to cover distance in America miserable. Every other car in this series is staying right when they can. Thank you to them. The rest of the world understands lane discipline. North America is wonderful at many things, but that's not one of them. The rest of the episode is excellent. Very relevant concept. Well presented.
I noticed that some cars could move over to the right as well. Some just camp out in the left lane and think I am going x over the speed limit so I don't have to move over. I pass and move over hoping a cop radars the left lane before right. Also a lot if people don't seem to check their mirrors to see someone coing up on them so should move over. Drives me bonkers.
This is by far the best reality TV show episode I have ever watched. You have a new subscriber!! Also, fun to see a few Supercharging stops I used myself on my recent Yellowstone road trip. When Team Model 3 had issues choosing the wrong Supercharger in Butte, I could definitely sympathize--I knew exactly where they were. Kind of a crappy area, haha.
I could totally live in my Suburban(van life) and travel the country nonstop. Once i land a remote job, that’s what i will do. I own more vehicles that i guess will just sit, hopefully neighbors don’t complain again. Privacy fence is a must.
Kind of wish the Acura team took it a little more serious just to see how it actually does against EV’s. They said they stopped to look at views, waiting in line ata drive through, not sure what else but seems they could even more efficient.
they are doing everything they can to make the acura not win or win by 10 minutes only. They got a super shit mileage car just because "we need to match the power of an EV" (while they are not in germany or race tracks) and the crew on this car stops for every stupid thing
@@xeon2k8 yeah there is no reason they should be last or almost last. They don’t need to plan stops, just easily stop when needed and don’t have to worry about charging issues like the CCS cars seems to be having.
@@xeon2k8 and that makes me think that at the end they're going to tell us how long each car spent stopped for fuel stops, and oh look, the Acura spent more time fueling up than the EV's did, not taking into account the farting around the ICE car did and all the unnecessary stops they made.
I wish the Car/Team label included their current race position, and also included the Brand and Location of the charging site when they are at a charger. Everything else is fantastic. Can’t wait for the next part!
I'm a 64 year old white guy but I think the women are under appreciated in this race. We barely hear anything from them. So is it that the women were being silenced by Kyle and team, or they didn't have much to say in this case? Maybe the editor can inform us how much of their footage was usable.
Cool seeing you guys get through Washington. Man the CCS infrastructure is still pretty rough. Tesla needs to support 1000v yesterday it's getting really sad and starting to look like they won't be the infrastructure savior they looked to be. EA needs real competition they clearly don't get it.

53:37 maaaan.. i miss seattle. Lived there 22 years. Moved because it became to expensive for my working class butt. Maybe someday I'll move back.
I hope you also track and show at the end the “fuel” cost across the participants
Kudos for the person who edited this ! So many hours of footage to choose from - and make it interesting and thrilling. Well done.
1:41:03: The communication happens toward the top of the pins; I've found it helpful to physically hold the connector firmly against the car during the handshake.
This video is so long I felt like I was watching the race in real time 🤣 Thanks for having me on this journey!
Awesome! Hello from Poland!
It is one of very few videos that long I was watching and not skipping.
Two thumbs up!
Hi from Finland! I hope They get some Kempower chargers later on!
Ps. Does Poland have many Kempowers?
@scronkfinkle1408 unfortunately we don't have Kempower at all. Which is sad
@@hubflyhub let's hope that is Soon fixed!
I recently did a UK to Lithuania road trip in my Model 3 and went through Poland. Surprising how good the infrastructure is getting, had no problems.
@@DaviDeXtA getting better but we have still long way to go :)
That was a lovely afternoon, thank you Kyle and the tribe.
@@keegan854or blocked by an ICE
There's no overnight stopping to sleep, in a race across the country. 😂
@ agreed, but I was talking about the real world. If you take your EV instead of your combustion car on a trip this long, the overnight stay will make the times a lot closer
True, but it kind of depends on how much you plan to drive in a day.
Ryan has used that strategy to win before.
Procrastinating at work and a 3 1/2 hour out of spec video pops up. Hell yeah brother, great day to be self employed!
I’d be happy with just pole position, chargers count and nearest town in the name box.
wow i made it all the way through! awesome video!
I have a 2014 model S 60 and I do several 500+ mile road trips per year. Love the car. Free supercharging for life. Charging stations are plentiful and you learn the good ones to stop at. Re-invigorated my joy for road trips
U got class
These road races are always great! Driving starts 48:20
I think I was fine missing the first episode. Seems like we got a full recap at the beginning of this one. 😂
@@Crazypostman that’s what I thought too, 51:40 intro episode plus another 48:19 of intro here is too much.
No complaints, though. chapter markers always makes me hit the thumbs up button. I'm certainly guilty of being a wind bag, too.
Gotta say one of the best part of this series is the scenery!!! Love this yall!!
Brilliant video as always, with one notable exception. Every single time at least one person says "splash and dash", can I recommend "volt and bolt" as a much more electro-friendly alternative?
I love these road trips. Thanks Out of Spec and their affiliates for all of the work, time, and travel to bring everyone this high quality production.
Waiting for this from 1 week.. Let's go... even though I can't afford any of these .. because I love car trips. I like to watch these types of videos
Kyle keeps raising the bar with his EV races. This is awesome. Can't wait for part 2.
Looking forward to the next ep!!! Thanks for the show!
Dave seems like consistently the most fun on a trip. I just wanna hang with the dude cross country
I guess that means I'll have to hang out with Lacy. Dang.
Kudos to the editor for keeping this relatively sequential.
I hope they are tracking the costs of charging and gas. I'd be interested to see at the end.
Thanks!

At the start of the video i see Kyle elbows. Must be a race because he is going for ultimate aero/weight saving
And he ditched the hoodie-another 3 ounces.
HAHA Great video! Can't wait for the next one. Shout out to Jordan for editing this much footage.
1:10:25 - “what is that? 500 kilowatts?” A gasoline pump is the equivalent of 19-20 megawatts.
I just found this channel and the first video I watched is over 3 hours long. Interesting test, thank you for doing it for us.

The "Ben Hur" of EV roadtrip films 😂
It's "The Lord of the Rings trilogy + The Hobbit" of EV roadtrip, film quadrology!
The best and most exciting road trip video by far ! And it's just getting started ! :O
Can't wait for the next episode !
At the end, can you let us know how much the cost (for electricity and gas) for the trip?
That Taycan charging speed, in Bozeman, is insane!
It looks fun maybe a Vancouver, CA to Halifax in the future.
Yeah, waaay longer than the I-90!!!
If they have some friends up north, that would be nice to see a cross-country race to compare the charging infrastructure between the two countries.
Is there a Vancouver in California?
@@kjorg9755 CA is also Canada

I’m from Gillette. Funny to hear them talk about it. Wyoming and SD are a charging desert for all DCFC. Can’t wait to see them charge in my hometown!
Cracks me up when they pull up to the chargers, and simulate a top notch pit crew hooking up. Seconds Matter.
A tenth of a second matters 😀
This is quite the documentary, I’ve settled in for the whole series
Kyle's strategy: "Arrive dead. Get a monster charging session." Sounds about right.
My heart is with the video editor. He/she/them are(is) the superstar(s) ❤️
@@kjorg9755 LOL of course, god forbids the ICE is faster by any means
Thanks for a great EV content from Prague! Tesla 🤞
Lacy has the best buttery voice.
I wish the Car/Team label included their current race position, and also included the Brand and Location of the charging site when they are at a charger. Everything else is fantastic. Can’t wait for the next part!
Kyle said the editing team tried to get a map included on screen, but that would have taken too much time before the production deadline.
I'm a 64 year old white guy but I think the women are under appreciated in this race. We barely hear anything from them. I'm KNOW that women can be and percentage of the population wise ARE just as nerdy as men. I worked as a computer programming/systems analyst from small companies to large organizations so I KNOW women have just as much to contribute IF ALLOWED. And I'm just not seeing them participating much in the talking and I'm sure that they have a lot they think about too and I'm hoping that if not in this race but in future races that we can have all women teams where they feel free to talk about the car(s) they are driving and their route planning, etc., in the future.
Thought this too as a mid age dude. Should have let the women have some more talk time. My wife is more interested in her Tesla than i am.
Kamala voter?
So is it that the women were being silenced by Kyle and team, or they didn't have much to say in this case?
Maybe the editor can inform us how much of their footage was usable.
YES!!!! This. An all woman team would be epic.
Not by me❤️👍🔥
Part 2 was fantastic! Took me all afternoon to watch in its entirety but so worth it.....
Cool seeing you guys get through Washington. Man the CCS infrastructure is still pretty rough. Tesla needs to support 1000v yesterday it's getting really sad and starting to look like they won't be the infrastructure savior they looked to be. EA needs real competition they clearly don't get it.
Honestly I feel the Model Y LR AWD should've been included on this. Best selling car and EV in the world and it wasn't included. Missed out on a lot of people.
More of lacy and sarah!
That cliffhanger(s) at the end of the video is Epic !!! Give these guys a tv show !!!
I’m curious how much cheaper the gas journey will be with a car that gets bad mileage and requires premium
Shame the mountain wasn't out on departure, it's a beautiful drive across Lake Washington when it is!
I think it would be funny to race some of the slowest “fast charging” cars on the market. Chevy Bolt, older Nissan Leaf I’m sure there are others but I can’t think of them right now.
Definitely coming up 😅
Subaru Solterra.
THAT!!! I knew I was missing one. Thank you. That or the BZ4X since they’re the same thing.
@@KyleConnerhaha excellent..
Long live the great and grand Chevy Bolt!! Bolts could easily win this by hogging the chargers for hours while the all the others wait in line! Game over.
