This time on Region Locked, we take a look at Nintendo's Japanese exclusive Nintendo Wii Game, Captain Rainbow. The game gained some publicity in the west for referencing Birdo's gender, and portraying Little Mac as washed up and out-of-shape. Through our analysis of these games and their gameplay, we hope you learn some fun facts about Captain Rainbow and have the making of it explained here on the Did You Know Gaming channel.

I thought the same thing. I kind of wish they at least gave Ness and alt skin/color to resemble Mike, since they look similar and use yo-yo's and bats.

Also I've seen many comments about GiFTPiA, and I wanted to say it's one of my favorite games ever, for which we did a textual translation years ago. I've seen people interested in making a patch for that too, and I hope it'll happen, but until we get there, you can already play through all of it with a little more effort. To be honest, if I had to choose among that one and CR, I would go for GiFTPiA. So I hope that gets some recognition too.

This is one Nintendo game that is *highly* unlikely to ever release outside of Japan, even as a Virtual Console game. Honestly, I think even Mother 3 has a better chance at being officially released in Western regions than this does...

B. Locker from Donkey Kong 64 was pretty obscure, but I'm certain we're never gonna see him again.
TheCartoonGamer8000 it would probably be too much trouble to get the rights to use him.
Though made by Rare he's owned by Nintendo (like all the DK characters), so there's no problem there.

The game was designed by *Kenichi Nishi* , the designer best known for making quirky yet light hearted games.
*Chibi Robo* is his most famous game, but his previous works are really interesting. *Moon Remix RPG* was an adventure game that was quite similar in structure to Undertale, even Tobyfox cited that game as a reference, even if he didn't read Japanese.
*LOL - Lack of Love* was a minimalist game about evolution, similar to Spore but without action RPG stuff. It was told in a rather poignant way. There is also a dedicated pee button.

I love this series so much. It's like an academy for video game knowledge.
Maybe they could have given it a digital re-release on the Wii u E-shop? If a game doesn't do well physically in it's original form, maybe it'd do better as a niche digital title. Now that I've seen game play footage, I actually kinda want to play this game

In his first appearance, Yamcha was literally afraid of girls and would lose his composure whenever he was around one (save for children); he managed to overcome this fear before the end of the first arc.

Lip needs more attention. I think the US can accept "cute female protagonists" more than plenty now and another Puzzle League style game wouldn't be too much to ask.
A new Puzzle League game with the original cast is one of my most wanted games, but even if they make a new PL game, i doubt they'd use the fairies :(

Seriously. She's been my top pick for a new Smash character since Brawl. The games already feature her weapon, so why not? Also, it's a damn shame that Nintendo Puzzle Collection on the GameCube never came stateside. You'd think that during the GameCube era, after Smash gave exposure to Fire Emblem, as well as various other Japan-only franchises via its trophy system, Nintendo would've been a bit more willing to give a game like that a release. It only helped that anime grew to be more commonplace, which wouldn't make Panel de Pon's character designs seem so alien, and if nothing else, promotional material could've emphasized the compilation also including Dr. Mario and Yoshi's Cookie, with the first true localization of the Panel de Pon series being treated like a bonus. Despite this, it never got a release, and that saddened me.
I, and I imagine most Americans, have never been of the opinion that "cute female protagonists" were never acceptable as lead characters in video games. The only problem is that female protagonists tend to only really work well in genres of games like Puzzle and Adventure titles, which are much less popular than the omnipotent First Person Shooter and Action titles.

This game is absolutely fantastic and not getting it in the US is one of the biggest crimes against fans Nintendo has ever committed. Great video!
Damn what an insanely wholesome game. Thank you for listing off the characters you help (I assume in the order you help them). It shows a clever story progression that doesn't need to be too in your face. I also have a stronger appreciation for the premise after seeing the direction it was taken. It feels inspired relative to most other game's stories.
I think that question mark vibrator is a callback to Peach's own "vibrating wand" from Super Mario RPG.
These Region Locked episodes always fill me with despair. I learn about a game, and then I get to learn about how it never actually came overseas. These videos are the purest form of torture.

Oh god, I remember being so hyped for this game to come out, and slowly losing hope of it ever coming to the west. I was also following the translation projects, but after a few years of no updates I let it go. I was always interested in learning japanese for their exclusive games, with this game being the main game I wanted to play if I ever reached an adequate level in the language, but ultimately this wasn't a strong enough reason for me to learn japanese and so I never did.

Well, Mappo's dream did come true.
After getting a new name and upgrading his doggy sidekick, he felt right at home with the ARMs gang.
A few notes (Mostly for anyone who doesn't know them):
1. Birdo's Japanese name is Catherine.
2. Gicchoman is known in English speaking countries as Space Hunter Drake Redcrest.
3. Although Tao originates in GiFTPiA, his appearance in this game seems to be more based on his appearance in Chibi-Robo!, in which he is an actual dog as opposed to a robot.
Speaking of GiFTPiA, there should be a Region Locked episode that covers it as well.

Yeah, I've heard of this title from the Wii, and understand that because of the lewd humor is what cost them a worldwide release. That kind of decision would definitely rise eyebrows here in the states.
Also, my favorite obscure character is Takamaru. I hope he comes back into the spotlight in the future, would've made a good NES rep in Smash.
Yes, I know. The thing is about Little Mac though, is that he got a new Punch-Out!! game before his inclusion in Smash. This needs to happen to Takamaru in order for him to secure a spot in the roster.

Thanks for posting this! I imported Captain Rainbow years ago in hopes that the Kirameki translation patch would eventually be released. I didn't realize that the patch has been out for 3 months now.

I've always wanted to play this game so much. Skip are a kind of guilty pleasure dev company for me, but it's Captain Rainbow that's always caught my interest more than anything. With so many variations on who to pick and when to pick them, the OST, the fun script, the goofy artstyle, the semi-real time system...god damn it, this is the exact kinda thing I love, and I wish I could support it officially in my own language. Thank christ for Kirameki and ROMhacking.
As for my favourite character, it's between Tracy and Birdo. Their dialogue is too much fun.

Thanks for this informative video! I remember hearing about Captain Rainbow years ago and as I was shopping for Japanese games for the Wii developed and or published by Nintendo this one popped up. Seems like such a gem and it would be really cool to see a global release with an English option. A part of me appreciates that it's such a little known game and makes me want to hunt it down and play it for myself before that happens if and when it ever does. Cheers fellow player!

Yeah, this game may have nothing much to do, but even then it's quite fun with many comical references you can find. It's like Animal Crossing but in a different way with adult contents included. Even the creators calls this as "Ura Smash Bros." for many reasons. I've played it before, and don't get deceived by its graphic and artwork, because the story is great, and I prefer people to try it out!

I got this game when I was around 10 years old. The story advances very slow but it was very fun. Its actually really difficult to grant everyone's wishes and Im pretty sure i didnt get to complete every character's wishes. Anyway Great game

I was floored when I collected the Nick and Mappo spirits in SSBU. It actually inspired me to play Giftpia and Captain Rainbow. Kyappy has set my new standards for the perfect girlfriend, and Nick's a very charming socially awkward dork.
I've always been fascinated with this game.
Captain Rainbow should be remade for the Switch, and should include new missions such as Waluigi wishing to get his own game, etc.

man i remember reading about this game as a kid, and I waited for it to come out here but it never did.
Recently played through this game for the first time using the fan translation, it's a great game. A lot of humour throughout. The English patch is however less than 95% complete. I didn't try most of them but all of the phone conversations and tips given by Hikari are not translated, as well as about 70% of the devil's dialogue not being translated either, along with other bits and pieces missing throughout. Worth playing through though for sure.

**SPOILERS**
The final section of the game has Nick/Captain Rainbow and Hikari (Shin Onigashima) be the final residents Mimin Island, and the big star that grants wishes can only carry one person away from the island.
Both were down to very last one in the ending The bad ending has. Hikari refuse to leave for sake of saving Nick, and knocks him out, putting him on the big star (Kirarin). As she waves away at him crying, the entire Mimin Island gets engulfed in darkness.
Pretty morbid, if you ask me.
