This time on Region Locked, we take a look at a game Nintendo has never brought to the west, Mother 3. Mother 3 is the Game Boy Advance sequel to the cult classic Super Nintendo RPG, Earthbound. Mother 3 began its development on the SNES before transitioning to the Nintendo 64. Development on the N64 64DD add-on was ultimately transitioned to the GBA. The game was released in 2006 in Japan, but was never officially localized in English. However, the game received an unofficial fan translation by the starmen.net community a few years later. The game's protagonist, Lucas, would go on to be featured in Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS, and the upcoming Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

About the mention of Lucas being the only Smash Character whose game never released outside of Japan:
This isn't entirely true; the Fire Emblem character Roy's game never released outside of Japan either, being Fire Embelm 6: The Binding Blade.
Ice13 It's a half-truth, Roy's game might not have been released in America, but he has appeared in Fire Emblem games that have. Still, an official release/remake of FE 3-6 would be nice.
While Binding Blade isn’t release in America, Roy is in Blazing Blade and Heroes, this being a character released outside of Japan.

Unlike Roy, I think Lucas has literally only appeared in Smash games outside of Japan. I don't think he even has a cameo in any other western-released games.
@@Erk1234567 It isn't a half truth at all, he was from the game that wasn't released in America. He has appeared in other FE games but he isn't from those. You wouldn't consider Roy from Smash... in which case, assuming you did, then you could consider Lucas from Smash. Lucas and Roy are in the same boat.
We got a very good fan translation of Mother 3 , at this point I don't even want Nintendo of America to touch it

If only so I could purchase a copy where my money went to the original creators, I am still for Nintendo releasing this officially over here. Importing an original cart wouldn't help in this case because the game is old enough that I can only purchase from second hand sources, and I can't even purchase the Japanese Virtual Console release due to the Wii U being region locked.

This game brings back a lot of good memories... the music, the ambience, the characters, the story; the game itself makes you go through a lot of different emotions. It's been 4 years since I played it, maybe it is time for another run. Thank you very much, Shigesato Itoi!

I still can’t get over how the Tanetane Island was originally _too_ dark and intense. That thing screwed me up
How so?
I think Hinawa was supposed to be a hallucination blaming lucas for her death. Not just that but the entire plot was supposed to be different, like Kumatora was supposed to be the final magspy instead of Fassad which would mean she would die. The final boss was suppossed to be called Lucas' Nightmare, which I think would cause Lucas' evil side to pull the needle which would end up destroying the world. You would see Hinawa's death, an unused giygas theme which could mean something, Porky was supposed to die and much more.
Kumatora being the last magypsy is something that I expected to happen, but was honestly disappointed when it didn’t happen. It would have been way cooler than Fassad.
There's a fan made translation for the game I STRONGLY reccomend you play it, it's one of the best games on this Earth, the writing and story are outright incredible and the gameplay is simple yet challenging
There's only one Earth, so I don't understand how it could be the best on any other Earth.
There actually are other Earth-like planets in our galaxy that revolve around the habitable zones of their solar systems.
Some of them are even bigger than our Earth. However, whether or not those other Earth’s hold life on them like ours is yet to be seen.
@@SegaMaster172 yeah but they still aren't THE Earth, just Earth like planets. But just my opinion I think there's almost definitely life on other planets. Space is basically infinitely big so I can't imagine that we are on the only planet that managed to have the conditions for life to live on it.

From where you get that? Mother 3 take place just before Pokemon Red as Pokemon system was literally just invented with Lt. Surge being canonically American, so he needed to be one of kidnapped people. Unova has at least thousand year history being Manhattan. It is probably near where Earthbound take place as Draginiste Stones are there.

I remember someone from Nintendo of America saying sometime last year that one of their main reasons for not localizing Mother 3 was because of possible controversies surrounding the Magypsies. According to NoA, who has historically taken a staunchly apolitical stance in their public presence and localizations, they fear that the Magypsies would be interpreted as a political statement by and against both ends of the spectrum. So if you're thinking that it's because of "the other side" that Mother 3 still isn't out, just remember that your side is being held accountable as well.
Also, quick correction: Claus isn't playable in Smash; Lucas has an alternate costume based on Claus, but he's neither renamed "Claus" with the costume active nor is his hairstyle changed to reflect Claus's.

Easily one of my favorite games of all time. I'm sad that it will probably never get a full release in the states, but the translation patch is absolutely worth it.

And btw that because of the main character's parents or even home planet dies or explodes doesn't automatically make the franchise dark, just look at Superman franchise. Superman's both krypton parents died when Krypton exploded and his earth father died because of a heart attack, but Superman franchise is still not a dark franchise.
In Metroid comics, Samus started to act like an angsty crybaby after her parents died, which in my opinion makes her one of the most annoying game characters of all time. Killing off the main character's parents in the beginning of the story and use it as a reason why the main character becomes an action hero is just a boring and lazy overused cliche in poorly-written stories anyways.
Lucas is a kid and he ended up killing his own brother, and that is a lot darker than Samus' parent's deads from Metroid series.
Also, I think that Project zero, Zelda twilight princess comics and even Luigi's mansion are actually darker than any Metroid game have ever been.

no...EarthBound is a GREAT game. I've played through it over 150 times since the original release, and I own it on both Wii U & 3DS as well as still having an original SNES cart. To this day it remains my favorite game of all time....too bad the original Mother doesn't hold up as well. Maybe a Mother remake bundled with EarthBound ( game's perfect as is, no need to remake it ) and an official Mother 3 localization on Switch would be possible...

Honestly the more and more we hear about this game from Nintendo and more we hear from fans that want this game brought over to the US and the rest of the world it feels like we’re getting closer and closer to getting this game.
This game is definitely one of the best that I have definitely played and the experience still resonates with me. So honestly I’m glad that Did You Know Gaming decided to cover it.
Honestly, if they could release Earthbound and Mother 3 as a digital pack on the Switch for 20$, I think it would sell amazingly.

I picked up a fan translated copy of Mother 3 on Amazon. Runs *perfectly* and comes in a very official looking GBA cart. The translation is excellent. Worth every single cent.

Mother 3 is undoubtedly my favorite game of all time. I played it for the first time almost immediately after finishing EarthBound, and was immediately sucked in by everything about it. The characters, the world, the present, the music, the plot… Almost everything about it is nothing short of a masterpiece in my eyes. It’s such an incredibly emotional game on so many levels, and I’ve only come to appreciate just how well told it’s narrative is more and more as I’ve gotten older. It’s a surprisingly dark game with a lot of depth, all balanced out by the same wit and charm that made EarthBound so great. I feel that it’s a game that everyone should experience in some capacity, and I hope for it to finally be official released in the west somehow, someday, so more people have access to it.
And the N64 beta is probably outright the most interesting piece of lost media in existence to me. I crave knowledge about it. I’ve searched the internet for everything I could learn about it, and I want more. I just hope that we discover a lot more information about it somehow during my lifetime.

Caliduchey nah. Saying nonsense like “you can plant a seed and then come back and it’s a tree!” SOUNDS impressive because you imagine lots of additional stuff. That isn’t in the statement. In reality, it’s “press. A to plant seed” in the designated dirt spot. Then you go back in the obligatory next chapter and it’s s tree. It’s not a big deal, it just SOUNDS like a big deal.
It sounds too ambitious for the N64, I don't think the game would have been possible.
Flrs91 It is possible. Think like this : you have this spot that you can interact with if you have a certain item. If you interact with it, a "switch" will activate. If this "switch" activates, when you go through that place in chapter 2 a tree will be there. Simple and effective

nintendo's not dumb. they know exactly the amount of sales this game would do, and they've weighed it against the cost of localization. mother fans are a loud minority, but only that. this game has been readily available online since right after it came out, in English, incredibly well done too. anyone who really wanted to play it, has. that's already decimated nintendo's profit margin on localizing it, and thus any logical reason or motivation.
translation took a year or so after release actually. They had plenty of time to announce it, if they wanted to do it in the first place.

I see this argument made left and right, and I could not disagree more with it. You could say that about ANY old game; "Why would you rerelease it on the eShop/Virtual Console if you could just emulate it?"
If your statement was true then digital rereleases wouldn't even be a thing at all. And yet, people still buy the games. Why? Because they like the games. That's the end of it. If they did take the effort to release Mother 3, it would sell.
I don't believe that's true. A lot of people would still be willing to buy it. It's why the Classic consoles sold as well as they did. Most people will support official releases, because playing them on official hardware feels very right.
@@fanb1536 There is no real way to determine on how many people would be willing to buy re-release of an old game plus localization would be very expensive for a long RPG like Mother 3. Does it really make much to spend millions of dollars to localize a game with a small fan base when NOA could release newer games for a better return on their investment? Wouldn't that be one hell of a surprise. Tinfoil hat time, what if thats been their goal all along? They haven't released Mother 3 because they've slowly been working on and finishing Earthbound 64, and they plan to put it in the N64 mini as an unlockable game without any announcement beforehand.
Mother 3 sounds like a really good game. It would be nice to play a Nintendo game that isn't all kid friendly. I would buy this game in less than a second if they announced it.

Honestly, I'm kinda glad they made Mother 3 for the GBA instead of the DS or the N64, I mean, if it was on N64, chances are it would have aged rather poorly, like a lot of the other games on the system did, and if it was on DS, chances are they'd shoehorn in touch/microphone controls to do something stupid and unnecessary...
I think the game turned out as good as it could have been on GBA, it's aged like a fine-wine, it looks, sounds and plays just as good now as it did back in 2006!
This, and the N64 graphical style really didn't suit the game at all in my opinion. Everything just looks weird, and not in a quirky, funny way like it's supposed to, but offputting instead. It would have killed the dramatic scenes, especially 20 or so years later. The GBA was perfect, allowing for a great color palette, an art style that would age gracefully, and beautiful sprite animations.
They probably would've added just a map on the bottom screen or something to interact with if it was on the ds. Wouldn't be too bad tbh but if it was on the n64 it definitely would've aged horribly.

Nintendo is missing out on a gold mine with Mother 3. I predict if Mother 3 were to ever release here in the West, it would be amongst the top 5 best selling games on the console. Or more realistically top 10 but it would for sure be a top seller for the Switch.

Actully no. Roys game being fire emblem 6 the binding blade was never realsed outside of Japan. The game i think your thinking of is Fire emblem 7 the Blazing blade (also know as just Fire emblem in North america and Europe) and that game is actully about Roy's father Eliwood. Just wanted to correct that.
