Also Nintendo to Little Mac after this game: 'Okay Little Mac, we're starting to run out of ideas. How would you like to star in the reboot of Punch Out? Little Mac: 'No!' Nintendo: 'We'll put you in the next Smash Bros game.' Little Mac: 'SOLD!'
I don’t understand why Birdo is even in this game, she wasn’t a forgotten character at this point and appeared at least in 1 game on every Nintendo console since Super Mario Bros. 2. There are plenty of obscure and forgotten Mario characters that would fit better in this game like Wart, Stanley the bug man, or Wendy the Fairy.
@@Milkyfresh-bz3to I find that hard to believe especially when you look the GameCube/GBA era where Birdo made plenty of appearances during that time and also made appearances in other games the same year Captain Rainbow came out like Mario Kart Wii and Mario Super Sluggers.
Imagine a sequel, where either more characters became inhabitants OR the island filled with Assist Trophies from all Super Smash Bros. games, and the game plays like Animal Crossing as well.
Imagine that all the OG characters come back to the lifeless island and you have to restore it ,but the ending makes it so all the Min Min get to live peacefully and the shadow demon things become New Peaceful Inhabitants.
I appreciate that you are still putting up original interesting content instead of just waiting for E3 or rehashing the same stories (switch pro) over and over again unlike many creators. I’m also fairly certain no developers paid you to make this video. Stay the course!
The weird thing about Tao is that his first appearance wasn't in chibi robo, it was in MooN: Remix RPG Adventure which is pretty much "Chibi Robo 0" (which is also on switch right now in English and is really good) Tao is straight up Kenishi Nishi's real dog and has appeared in every game he's worked like: MooN, U.F.O., L.O.L: Lack Of Love, GIFTPIA, etc.
Shh... don't open the Love-de-Lic rabbithole here, or we'll never leave (I didn't realise Tao was also in both UFO: ADITL and Lack of Love. That's so cool!)
wow another video on captain rainbow :0 (these are rare) this game is understandably under appreciated but it certainly could use more spotlight. it’s a rare gem in nintendo’s catalog and an easy recommendation for classic nintendo fans. its one of my favorites!
I think the reason for JP exclusivity was the low sales there not the story itself. There've been plenty of games that got altered oversees, they could just replace some of the items and change the dialogue, since most of the stuff is just done thourgh reading, not visuals.
Given that you’ve covered Murasame and have done a lot to popularise Panel de Pon, can we expect any videos on the other forgotten games in here, like Giftpia and Famicom Fairy Tales?
By the way, I'm creating a cartoon. It's called, forgotten Tales! It's about these forgotten and obscure characters that go on crazy and wacky adventures.
I absolutely adore Chibi-Robo on the GameCube! Captain Rainbow was one of those games that I learned about through Smash Bros., and although I can understand why it didn't get released overseas, even if I'm not as good and handling adult/racy content as most people my age are, I'm still utterly fascinated by this game!
Man, an island full of forgotten characters is such a clever and hilarious idea for a video game. And I think Nintendo is one of the very few game companies that could actually pull this concept off. It's a shame this never got a release outside of Japan, because it looks like it is a lot of fun (Altough I understand why it didn't. Some moments didn't age well and are quite umcomfortable...)
This team deserved so muich better. This game looks fun and I love chibi robo! Makes me more excited for my Livestream lets play of Chibi robo. Also, you've been killing it on obscure old game reviews. You showed me so many overlooked 3ds eshop games! though you also made me want to buy a copy of doshinthe giant...
Captain Rainbow: the weird hidden gem that we never got, and who most peeps only really know about due to Smash For WiiU and its infamous Chungus Mac trophy.
In mentioning Captain Rainbow and it's quaint, almost somber relationship with forgotten/retired IPs being both cozy but melancholic, it most reminds me of in tone and theme (and also how pretty bs the actual gameplay is) is Chuulip, about kissing an entire town's problems away despite the soul-crushing Japanese work industry leading everyone else into deep existential depression and such. It's worth remembering how Studio Skip was derived from devs who worked on Moon (that subversive RPG that inspired Undertale), as well as ton of other off-shoot dev studios, including Punchline of said Chuulip. I'd recommend ThorHighHeels who did a couple vids mentioning both Moon and Chuulip since otherwise I wouldn't have made the connection otherwise, but it's really nice that even long after Skip has basically been thrown into Nintendo's waste bin, that at least some of their more obscure work is getting some love
I played Captain Rainbow about 5 years ago as a friend and I bought a Wii whilst living in Japan along with a couple of games. I kind of wish I kept it instead of my friend who I’m no longer in contact with as I never got to finish it and he didn’t really appreciate it. It was pretty fun but, as Jon said, you really need to understand the Japanese to fully enjoy it.
Not a coincidence! The devs (namely Kimura and Nishi) started at the same company: Love-de-Lic, where they made Moon RPG together. They then split off and went on to make games in a similar style like Chulip, Chibi-Robo and Captain Rainbow
@@mr.beluga3996 Great! Moon on Switch is super special, as it's the first official English translation of the game, a game that came out in 1997! I hope you enjoy it! (Although if you like Chulip then I'm sure you will!)
Honestly I can’t help but draw comparisons to Epic Mickey, you go to a world of forgotten characters, it’s a weirder game than the usual products the company makes, and there being the ability to just be a jerk and not help the people all just give me that vibe and makes me want to play this game to see how it is. (To be clear I’m not saying either is a rip off of the other I just thought the comparison was worth making)
I can see why Birdo and Trixie alone caused NoA to back off this game, though they could have at least done a French version. I've seen WAY worse in French pre-school shows. Still, maybe horny Birdo contributed to the "Mario Mandate" that's supposedly in place just to infuriate the muppet. We've all played Fire Emblem here - I wouldn't put it past Intelligent Systems to try and put some hunky-punky-panky-stanky in Paper Mario. The "sticker" part of Sticker Star probably referred to a different type of "sticky" at one point.
yeah Nintendo Japan made this game wow that was very wired Nintendo game, and very Okay you're liked it joh from Nintendo life RUclips in united kingdom this is good video.
I'm glad the weird gross transphobia is an outlier and the rest of the game is better. Honestly the birdo quest is the only thing I knew this game for before this vid
By the way, I'm sure this wasn't intentional, and maybe you were just unsure what pronouns to use on birdo given how mixed Nintendo's messaging has been on her, but it's definitely a common and frustrating thing for people to refer to trans women using they/them pronouns in order to deliberately avoid using she/her on us. If a person/character has an established set of pronouns already, there's really no good reason to avoid using them
"And in the end, I was touched by Captain Rainbow" - Jon, 2021
That’s a bit saucy
Phasing
Nintendo to all of these characters after one game:
‘This is as far as you go!’
Also Nintendo to Little Mac after this game:
'Okay Little Mac, we're starting to run out of ideas. How would you like to star in the reboot of Punch Out?
Little Mac:
'No!'
Nintendo:
'We'll put you in the next Smash Bros game.'
Little Mac:
'SOLD!'
Fun fact: they didn't include the Mach Rider because they thought that he was way too obscure for this game xD
Mach Rider is a she, you never see VS Mach Rider for the arcade.
Destroys the entire point lol
Such a bold strategy. Make a video game full of cameos of characters you’ve either forgotten about or never heard of.
Basically the premise of the Epic Mickey games.

Ironic that Capitan Rainbow is now an obscure character himself
Imagine a sequel, where either more characters became inhabitants OR the island filled with Assist Trophies from all Super Smash Bros. games, and the game plays like Animal Crossing as well.
That’d be cool
Imagine that all the OG characters come back to the lifeless island and you have to restore it ,but the ending makes it so all the Min Min get to live peacefully and the shadow demon things become New Peaceful Inhabitants.
I imagine Spring Man from ARMS say "NOOOOOOO I don't want see these Min Min! Min Min has already stolen my invitation for Smash!"
This game sounds awesome. Weird, but seriously funny.
Speaking about forgotten characters, Kammy Koopa is one less known character now, Nintendo forgets so many of their own unique characters.
I hated when they replaced her with Kamek in the Paper Mario series and didn't even give an explanation why.

The reality of the the forgotten island of forgotten characters,
The Epic Mickey of Nintendo.

Crazy Tracy has big boobas in this game. Also, she does come back in the Zelda LA remake.
Her Big boobas probably influenced her to be on the mission to seduce every man in the island, she got the edge
I really hate that comment I made but I ain't gonna delete it
This game deserves a remake on Switch or Switch 2, I don't care if it is only in Japan again.

Lip was ahead of her time, the world just didn't know it at the time of release.
fun fact: the way that skip does voice lines for chibi robo and captain rainbow is to use old radio clips and cut them up into gibberish
I finished Captain Rainbow this year and its one of my favorite games ever, I am glad you played it Jon!
I think the reason for JP exclusivity was the low sales there not the story itself.
There've been plenty of games that got altered oversees, they could just replace some of the items and change the dialogue, since most of the stuff is just done thourgh reading, not visuals.
In an alternate reality this game and subsequent sequels would be king and not smash bros.
I can't believe they had all these obscure Nintendo icons, and they left out Doshin the Giant.
Excellent video Jon. I remember first reading about this in official Nintendo magazine and being intrigued. Glad to see actual footage!
This video is awesome. Thanks for putting it together. Really well done!!
I love this kind of content. Great work !
I love these videos about strange or forgotten games
This is now my favourite ever Birdo appearance. And Birdo is one of my fave Mario characters.
